Here are the steps I would follow if getting laid off was my goal. Step 1: get hired by a company that is likely to lay people off. The company should be big enough to lay people off instead of doing something crooked like illegally firing people. The company should be unstable enough that it either has a history of layoffs or is likely to downsize. Step 2: keep doing a good enough job that you can't get legally fired and do that long enough for the layoff to come. Don't do so well that downsizing leaves you still in your job. For example, if you become CTO, you're far less likely to get let go until the entire company goes bust.

You're a really cool dude. Thanks for sharing your story. No one should be ashamed that they got laid off, it doesn't mean shit to anyone's character or competency. Sometimes getting laid off is the best thing that can happen, as it allows you to re-evaluate things from your own perspective, and to even land opportunities that pay much better and have better perks. I have relatives who work at WD and they are by far one of the worst paying "large" companies in the SF Bay Area. Absolute penny pinchers.
I know the feeling.... Way to be strong..... You're the kind of guy that sets a good example of how to handle life's bullshit , like a man..... Sometimes it's not the quality of your work, but weather or not you fit in their little "click" .
In cases like his, it probably doesn't even have anything to do with company fit (he said he and his manager liked each other). More often then not, it's either: 1. Company is not growing quickly. Revenue and profit margin could both be high, which is great for the company. However, shareholders aren't making money on a stagnant company. Shareholders are represented by the board, who appoint and fire the CEO (if the company is public). Pressure on management is to increase profit, either because higher dividends or high gain from share price increase. Since revenue isn't increasing, they can do it quickly by reducing costs. People who make lots of money on teams that aren't working on growth projects are the most efficient way to cut costs (you can lay off one person who makes $200,000/year, or you can lay off 3 people who make $66,000/year, and that one person isn't necessarily worth as much as those three people). 2. There's a new leader somewhere up the chain, and they see things differently than the old leader. Maybe they don't understand what your team does as well as the old leader does, for example. Your manager is then tasked with conveying the value of your team to the new leader. If they fail at that, then the new leader may believe your team is redundant. They may decide to eliminate the team altogether (I've heard "Do we really need people focused on Knowledge Management?" so many times it makes my head spin), or they may decide that they can make things more efficient by combining your team with another team ("This guy has Analytics in his job title. What's he doing that the Analytics Team isn't doing?").

Layoffs are a way of life for tech workers. Between mergers and all the offshore and H1Bs you're going to get laid off all the time. My company just bought another company. We now have 2 of every department. Once the merger is complete there will be a lot of layoffs.
I am so sorry brother. This happened to me in February 2020. So funny I almost exactly the same thing I got pulled into a meeting I asked if I should bring my laptop and they told me no, when I sat they told me it would be my last day but paid through the week only. I have since been looking for a new opportunity but still haven't had any luck.
Happened to me in 2016, I was a senior software engineer at this place for 2 years. I got a higher paying job not to long after, there is plenty of workout there; so wasn't to big of a deal :)
You faced it like a champion. Congratulations. I have a question. Don't you think Western digital might be the reference that screwed you chances at Google? Someone there might be badmouthing you.
Never been laid off from a salary position, and I can count the number of times on one hand that I've seen others been laid off. Since starting my career in 2005 I got raises every year and eventually promoted to architect role. I quit that life 4 years ago and ever since have done consulting. I'm 36 now and as a consultant I've only lost a contract once, and they gave all the people on our contracting team a month of billables which for me is 20k so no issues there. Had more contract work within the month. I'm in between Milwaukee and Madison, WI. I don't know what these people in the comments are saying about H1B because it must be regional or something - we have H1Bs here but they sure as shit aren't causing US Citizens to lose their tech jobs. Tons of demand in Milwaukee and Madison, not enough good people. Good video about getting laid off but I have a feeling a lot of the comments here about H1Bs are completely location-based. You will always potentially have risk of being laid off, but I'm just putting it out there that there are markets where you can have relatively stable work, be able to bank enough money that you don't care if you get laid off, and still work with good tech stacks.
My company does the same last year we had 2 layoff round in the company. The first one was 2 weeks after being hired by them. I m not sure if i should start looking around or hang in there. I m making good money have 2 young age kids. I guess will see
The company that i left for that job wants me back in their R&D test engineering department i m keeping great relation with some managers their. At work i m not motivated anymore and my efficeincy is not what it used too be when i started. Seing these 2 rounds of layoff just killed me from the inside. One of my coworkers just put his 2 weeks notice yesterday. I m comfortable where i am now!!!! the job that i used to do is by far more challenging and i will be making about the same amount. What to do ??? I feel like people who are whatching that video feel exactly what i m saying. I m looking for some word of windsome

Hey came across this video - it was their loss not yours. I was just laid off from Angel Oak Mortgage and I felt like what you described - we were working remote mostly so it was easy for them to get us on a conference call and give us the Ax. Lovely! In an inflation plus recession economy 2022! But hey! I’ll survive as always and onward to bigger and better things! Hope you are doing well! Thank you for your video made me feel less alone.
Sounds OK. Normally these companies make up some nonsense and claim that you're not performing your duties and fire you without benefits for gross misconduct. Good luck suing them.
What bothers me is the time that you didn't have a job. Could you not have taken a smaller salary temporarily or do contract work until you landed a larger offer?
I got one contract offer but it was halfway across the country. Also, contractors get treated like crap with no benefits and can get terminated at any moment for no reason. It was better to spend my time prepping for the jobs I actually wanted long term.
Dude your first video I watched was Not getting Amazon offer, second getting rejected by Google this is the third one :( I'm sorry all this happened to you.
I'll throw this out there for someone who knows more on the topic than I do. I have hear the rough statement more times than I can count that "Coders are a dime a dozen and GOOD coders are RARE!!!!
No job security, always keep tabs on other jobs and network with people at other companies. In other words, plan your next job search in advance. BTW, work for the county , state in a boring IT job is safer ... if you can't handle the stress...
Thanks for your videos, they're really informative. Do you think your job finding took so long because of your laid off in your last company or it was not really an issue?
Companies hire software engineers for four years fire them get the new crop of college students that have new technology skills. I lost my job and I haven’t programmed sense.
Mark Potter Do you feel like the whole “demand” for software engineers is just a scam? I constantly hear about the demand and the coding camps and all. I’m not an engineer and have no interest but, I’ve thought about it from time to time.
College students don't have new technology skills. They are just at the peak of learning and eager to learn new things and motivate to come to work to get the buck. Alway refesh yourselve and constantly learning new things.
ManPursueExcellence ; I realize that location is everything also. Jobs are no more than the impression that the company can fit you for their needs. I have enjoyed programming for many different companies. India was where most of the jobs went. I am comfortable ending my programming career and retiring never will stop coding for myself.
Mark Potter What kind of things do you like to code and why? How does the coding you do serve your life? In what ways do you use your own programming? Have you invented something using coding?
As a comp sci major in the 90’s agree with you I have seen tech change so much and if you like it it it’s BEST to always keep your skills fresh maybe not even have a degree for it just certs because that’s what it has come to. My downfall was not staying current.
This video is from more than 1 year ago, but I just wanna say that the decision of collective firing, like 300 people getting laid off, usually comes from way up. In such situation, the decision is made by people who actually don't know their workers, so probably you were laid off by some random criteria and not because you did something wrong.
Saying there is a skilled labor shortage is one of the biggest BS things from companies recently. It is just a ploy to flood the market with tons of skilled workers so that companies can profit off of short term hiring strategies. Yes the demand for skilled work is going up, but so is the supply there are plenty of skilled workers with advanced degrees available. Just look at the requirements that companies need of even entry level positions and how specific they get when it comes to position requirements in general that would be impossible if there was a "shortage"
Hi great video bro, Just wanna ask if they provided your benefits in terms like retrenchment benefits? e.g number of years of service is equivalent to the number of months base on you net worth should paid, so it's like this 10yrs of service is equal to 10 months worth of basic, I am just curious.
Bruh start your own shit so you don't depend from anyone. I was one year away from graduating with a chemistry degree and I decided to start my own business. Best decision ever. I've been on my own so far, and I'm currently making about $750k in revenue with around 45% profit.
Thanks for making this video. I want to make videos about all the shitty interviews and the interviews I have come across, who believe they are IT gods, yet can’t speak English. One hiring manger from a well know oil and gas company told the recruiter that I cheated in my interview. How the f##k does a person cheat in a panel interview 🤯🤯🤯🤯 when there was nothing to write.
Misery loves company that's why they lay off a lot of people at once ....the stock market has the same concept it's called a mutual fund where everyone loses their money mutually
WDC is not a software company - they are a commodity component company trying to survive. they also do dumb shit like traveling with a gym and trainers for their executives. they do give good severance packages however. WDC is a good company that isnt transitioning well into the era of cloud.
I don't get americans you do realize, there are some good european countries which ARE cheaper to hire and pretty skilled or skilled enough in IT? Why would you pay more using local engineers in murica when you can outsource at very good quality for 3-4x times cheaper :3 My recommendation: move to EAST European countries, homes are obtainable at least more obtainable and jobs pay decent enough, rent is going up but still decent, at least a lot better than american cities - 10x times faster internet and 10-20x times cheaper sooo....... If it's so hard now in america in the IT field to get jobs....dudes and dudetes, what are you going to do at above the age of 45-50-55? Oh you didn't want to buy a home because you though renting was smarter, well now you can't get a job, can't afford rent because rent is expensive as hell and low end jobs can't afford even a room? Invest in a home somewhere, this way you can at least survive bills/food with a low end paying job until you die of old age :3
This is a stupid comment, have you ever studied business studies? Inflation in eastern European countries is becoming increasingly problematic, ontop of this, managers having to fly to these countries all the time and still have to pay for buildings in other countries. Not to mention how face to face communication is vital on software projects and this is something you simply have access to when off shoring work which means the end product is poor or completely misses the mark and can cost the company millions. Being quick to market is everything and this is something Americans understand MUCH better than Europeans which is why they are always churning out dominating IT companies and why Europe fails to compete. As someone from and studying in Europe that has worked for companies offshoring to cheaper countries I can tell you right now, they are paying the price for it.
Wait until you hit 45. At 50 forget it - no more job offers. You will be forced to change careers or start a business if you want to keep working. Once they see gray hairs. Good bye.
The practice of your manager is very shady! He must know the layoff before hand. He could have discussed it with you much earlier and connected you with other team. Also, Re-org has been overly used for the excuse of laying off. Tip: Never sign the document in the office. Always, always ALWAYS consult a lawyer. Your severance would typically double in some cases if not triple.
Interesting
Agree, but if this is happening for the first time with someone unprepared for this situation, then it is about impossible to think about this.
you just lost the job, you don't want to be wasting money on a lawyer that will probably tell you company is in the right.
@@asadb1990 odds are, if they need you to sign termination papers, the company is in the wrong.
@@aidan2schmidt sure but you have to weigh your options. company pay huge lawyers to avoid such situations.
I have a condition where I can't read words beginning with o:s followed by two f:s and were very displeased when hearing "... a topic I hope none of you have to experience.".
On a serious note thank you for posting your videos. They truly feel genuine and honest which is something I really value.
😂maybe he will make another video for that.
Been there with Broadcom Corp. in 2002, it sucks anyway you look at it... I was also lied to, etc.. but thanks for sharing, your not alone.. it is one main reason why there is so little loyalty in our tech field.... just keep at it....
How did things work out for you after the layoff?
Thank you for sharing it! Unfortunately it is typical:( I have this experience also
Been there twice. Once restructuring, second time great company went down due to mismanagement. I dusted myself and moved on.
Wow that sucks. Glad you were able to bounce back.
honest man! respect!
Thanks for sharing your experience!
You faced it like a champion. Congratulations. I have a question. Don't you think Western digital might be the reference that screwed you chances at Google? Someone there might be badmouthing you.
Thanks boss. Yeah it’s very possible but it’s not something I have control over so no point in worrying about it :)
People always forget that there is world outside the Silicon valley and Seattle
What is it that you do? If I may ask. Thanks
@@petertherock3184 Full stack custom software development
My company does the same last year we had 2 layoff round in the company. The first one was 2 weeks after being hired by them. I m not sure if i should start looking around or hang in there. I m making good money have 2 young age kids. I guess will see
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to look around. Since you already have a job you can be picky and only take interviews you really want.
@@tachee77910 Sorry, I just read your comment. You know more than many in this business. You can do EVERYTHING in life if you have achieved so much so far. I would like to share with you what I wrote above on the story of the channel owner: You can do "a million" things with your skillset and knowledge: Creating courses online, consulting, joint venture with other technicians, attending meetups and create your own software, ..., the list is endless.
dont take it personally man, lucky to an American :P ..but it shows us that how much we should never rely on our company and keep on working..
This love of companies Americans have is mind boggling
Can you make a vid about how you supported yourself financially over those 8 months? Did you move back home? Were you on unemployment? Etc.
Thank you for your video made me feel less alone.
its happen to me twice. they come and tell you clean your desk and the manager escort you to the door and take off your bage
Thanks for sharing! Can you do the separate video on the 8 months period? Sounds interesting.
Honest guy deserves a sub and a like💛
Thanks for sharing your story. I was also laid off back in 2009...one of the worst things Ive ever gone through.
You got a pretty good severance package.
Tomorrow is a different day. Keep your head up bro
The corporate world is lame.
Robert Lopez are you in the corporate world?
@@deboman81 Nope
What did you do for those 8 months? Did you do freelance work? Get a part-time job in a different industry?
Sounds OK. Normally these companies make up some nonsense and claim that you're not performing your duties and fire you without benefits for gross misconduct. Good luck suing them.
There is definitely no shortage of good tech workers, there is only the shortage of "cheap" tech workers.
I got laid off today. The feeling is not good. I am looking for a new job now.
Mark Potter
Do you feel like the whole “demand” for software engineers is just a scam?
Mark Potter
What kind of things do you like to code and why? How does the coding you do serve your life? In what ways do you use your own programming? Have you invented something using coding?
As a comp sci major in the 90’s agree with you I have seen tech change so much and if you like it it it’s BEST to always keep your skills fresh maybe not even have a degree for it just certs because that’s what it has come to. My downfall was not staying current.
everything is fine... that is the meme of my life.
8 months is definitely an exception and not the norm. Were you willing to relocate? Do you have a CS degree?
Can you make a video elaborating on any difficulties during the 8 months of searching
I'd also like to know if you were aggressively looking during the 8 months or if this is just the norm. Thanks!
Bruh start your own shit so you don't depend from anyone. I was one year away from graduating with a chemistry degree and I decided to start my own business. Best decision ever. I've been on my own so far, and I'm currently making about $750k in revenue with around 45% profit.
Dang man, congrats
Glad you recover...could you elaborate more on what you did in those 8 months ?
I've gotten lots requests for this so I might just make a video to elaborate on that.
Damn, the more I see this shit, the more I’m glad I decided not to go into this industry.
What do you do know? I need some advice in 23

It is always good to have a large amount of savings: anything can happen, You may be out of a job for lots of unexpected reasons.
this is so relevant in 2020 covid situation
I know some people that had a similar experience in a different country
WDC is not a software company - they are a commodity component company trying to survive. they also do dumb shit like traveling with a gym and trainers for their executives. they do give good severance packages however. WDC is a good company that isnt transitioning well into the era of cloud.
just got really laid off yesterday
im new to your channel, i was wondering what you did during the 8 months you were searching for jobs? Were you studying for interviews?
Hey, welcome to the channel. I was mostly studying for interviews. Several people have asked me about this so I might dedicate a video for this.
You’ve been out of work since October 2018? That’s rough. Hang in there.
I already had a job at the making of this video
Yooo I work at WD! Hardware is different than software though.
Yeah definitely!
I don't get americans
you do realize, there are some good european countries which ARE cheaper to hire and pretty skilled or skilled enough in IT? Why would you pay more using local engineers in murica when you can outsource at very good quality for 3-4x times cheaper :3
My recommendation: move to EAST European countries, homes are obtainable at least more obtainable and jobs pay decent enough, rent is going up but still decent, at least a lot better than american cities - 10x times faster internet and 10-20x times cheaper sooo.......
I suspect most Eastern European companies are not keen to hire foreign nationals, without work permits, who don't speak the local language
Thanks for telling us about your story .. btw you look like Turkish :)
Sorry to hear WD is going down
I very wrongly misread the title of this video...
Wait until you hit 45. At 50 forget it - no more job offers. You will be forced to change careers or start a business if you want to keep working. Once they see gray hairs. Good bye.
you are not getting job offers ?
43, got grey hairs, just turned down three job offers. Guess I should start looking for a new career.
Just kidding, but seriously I am looking at going back to being a business systems analyst.
What about 37 and going bald ?
Leonard F Reid are you getting face to face interviews?

I'd be pissed
I wonder if I should subscribe...
This sounds like a risky profession.
There’s risk in almost any profession.
They did't give you two weeks notice or something? That is so mean
You look Iranian/Italian/Arab. where are you from? Are you spanish?
woaf... 8 months, doesn't bode well for somebody getting laid off like now...
The practice of your manager is very shady! He must know the layoff before hand. He could have discussed it with you much earlier and connected you with other team. Also, Re-org has been overly used for the excuse of laying off. Don't trust company like WD either as employee or customer/investor. Shady!
Not related, but poor Life Science students.
Trust me software engineering is not a good profession. Change your field and try for management or finance
