    I will 100% whip out a calculator to do basic math, and I aced my college Calc final last semester. I am great at math, but tend to make silly errors due to issues with inattention. I would rather look silly double checking over making an avoidable mistake.

      Exactly, it's incredibly easy to make silly mistakes, even for people with a lot of practice. I have a Maths degree and watch Countdown every morning and I still wrote down that 8*25 = 150 during one of the number rounds this morning 😂.
      There's no shame in double checking, especially if the work is graded. It's like being that confident in your English skills that you never run a spell checker over your essays after writing them. You might be that skilled, but do you really want to take an unnecessary risk out of pride?

      @@jakerockznoodles I'm sorry, the key word is basic math. IF you can do basic math then you can do basic math.
      Being good at college calculus means you memorized the formulas and learned to use your scientific calculator well. You forget those steps but if you're good at basic math you don't forget basic math. If anything you find more patterns or ways to manipulate the numbers over time to do the math faster.

    • @Trish....

      @@jakerockznoodles I recognize that I had awful math teachers. I remember asking my Geometry teacher how this would help me later on, & she said it got her a job, & I said something juvenile about making more from my allowance. In any event, I have yet to use geometry in my daily life! I took intermediary college algebra at a community college, & it transferred as a math course to my alma mater university, so then I took college algebra online (best way), aced that, & thus completed my 2nd req'd math course for my BA in poli sci - I lucked out there. Then, in law school, math is fairly simple re: contracts, unless you specialize in corporate, int'l law, or the like. The only time it became super tricky, for me, was in the elective, Trusts & Estates, which I only took bc it's handy skill for practicing gen law. W/o wills, ppl's estates can be divided & subdivided by the govt, meaning lots of fractions. Also, w/trusts, conditions & %s can be very complicated, & when two or more ppl own equal shares of property, then their children, grandchildren, etc all inherit %s of said real property, & it becomes a nightmare! The law of perpetuity is highly confusing, as well! However, it's still all basic math, & not complicated enough to use postulates/theorems, or struggle to find the value of x!
      In sum, the crappy teachers I had made math a chore for me. It affects deductive reasoning, & the ability to break problems down into manageable steps. I had to learn that on my own, basically, & it was always challenging! I am convinced, nevertheless, that some ppl are simply better w/words than #s, & vice versa. I understand the value of words, & how the law interprets them. For ex, there's no definitive answer to anything, & it's drilled into our heads as newly minted lawyers - "it depends" is the most accurate answer to everything! Words are used to frame an issue, then to argue for or against it, then to explain the law(s) at issue, & finally to come to a conclusion, whereby specific words are used to interpret the law as it applies to issue. It's really a formula for words to examine a court case that's called IRAC, which stands for Issue, Reasoning, Application, Conclusion. I value that training bc it carries over, just like math skills, into everyday life. Although I appreciate that there's always one mathematically correct answer, I actually enjoy the complexity of words & their persuasiveness, which is harder to quantify, IMO

    I failed math in high school and thought I was rubbish at it so I get unreasonably mad when people hold their math ability over others. I was fortunate that my life took a bit of a weird path and learned as an adult I actually didn't hate math, I just wasn't taught in a way that I could learn from at the time and I had no confidence to try. Now I have a degree in it and work in a field where it's needed! The thing is, I recognise the exact same struggles I had in so many people - even down to recognising what isn't understood and why because I've been there. I see it all the time in my professional life now, and most of the problem is that people actually have it a complete lack of confidence. Pretending you're so brilliant and everyone who can't do it is beneath you is just scummy behaviour that actually stops other people developing their ability!! Never listen to anyone who tries to put you down.

      If you were to judge my intelligence based on my math skills, I'd be dumber than a snail. That's because I have pretty severe dyscalculia, a learning disorder which quite literally prevents me from understanding mathematics. I need a calculator for pretty much anything (which doesn't really help my actually understand math any bettter). I also can't read big numbers, like what does this say "426434"? I've got no fuching clue. Sure, I can read the numbers individually, but got no clue what the whole number is. I have no control over this, it's literally how my brain is wired.
      So it really pisses me off when people equate being good at math (and only math, like people can't be smart in other fields and not being good at math must mean you're as dumb as dog shit) with being intelligent and in turn also equate being intelligent with being worthy of basic respect and decency.

    • @KeyWiteWolf
      @KeyWiteWolf 3 роки тому +11

      @@Dxs4all I feel this. When I was younger, I was constantly told I was bad at math, and the teachers I had, treated me like an idiot for it. It was not until later we realized I had Dyslexia and Dyscalculia. There's a few other problems too, but they just mean my brain is wired a bit differently. It came as a shock to me later to find out I actually have a high IQ, because I had grown up around that attitude, that belief that being good at math meant you were smart, and being bad at it meant you were stupid. It was not until college I finally had some teachers who allowed me to find other ways to solve things, and did not insist I use only this one formula or method, even if I did not understand it and found another, still viable way to reach the correct answer. The experience of being allowed to find and use alternative methods was like learning an entirely different subject, compared to the math I was "taught" as a child. There's still some things I will never be able to do in the traditional way, like for example fractions, which I can only solve if I convert them to decimals first. My brain, for whatever reason, cannot process them in fraction form. But at least once I got older I had the freedom to use my own methods and "tricks" to get around my limitations. I just wish schools were more flexible about these things. I know there were and are other kids like me, who just needed the freedom to come to the same solution another way, and we could have understood things. And I wish there was not this elitist attitude about math and intelligence. There's more than one kind of intelligence, and it would change a lot of kids' lives to know that just because they are not an ace student at one thing, it does not mean they're an idiot.
