  • On March 30, 2020, with ridership plummeting amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Detroit People Mover shut down temporarily. Much like other Covid-related shutdowns, what was initially intended to be a brief hiatus became a much longer absence, as it wasn't until more than two years later, on May 20, 2022, that the People Mover would resume service on its loop through Detroit's central business district. Rain damage from a series of violent thunderstorms the preceding summer delayed the reopening. When the Mover finally returned to service, it was with an abridged schedule, with only two trains running and six of its thirteen stations served.
At 7 a.m. on Monday, May 20, the doors to Michigan Avenue Station were reopened to riders at last; shortly thereafter, cars 6 and 7, bearing a purple 2020 advertising wrap for Shipt, rolled into the station for the system's first public run since the shutdown.
When the Mover reopened, fares were waived through October. Only five of the system's eleven railcars (6, 7, 9, 10, 11) ran in service that year, stretching the usual 4-minute headways to seven minutes or longer. The system continued to run a partial route for more than a year, with the seven remaining stations progressively returning: it wasn't until June 26, 2023 that Times Square Station reopened, restoring the full 13-station loop to regular service.
