    In WYR:
    1) '63 GT Hawk
    2) My choice of year, '61 Hawk with 4-speed (last year of fins)
    3) '63 T-Bird
If it would have been a choice in 1) I'd have chosen the '63 Grand Prix that's sitting beside the Hawk.
Thanks as always for showing a beautiful vehicle!

For WYR, it’s the Lincoln first scenario, the 1963 Gran Turismo for the second, and all three for the third (I know, I’m copping out but I really like all of them).
I almost watched this last night but I got caught up with the election coverage. Still, I wanted to see it because my father owned a ‘62 model which he drove for about a year. Even as a seven-year-old I thought that was a classy front end, with that radiator-like grille and the bumper guards. I also really liked the dashboard layout. Funny, almost sixty years later I still remember the aroma of its interior. It was white, with a red interior. Out of any of the cars my father drove when I was a kid, it was my favorite.

The doohickey in front of the battery is the brake booster. I just love the looks, inside and out, of the entire Hawk series, as well as its 53/54/55 predecessors. That said, they are just average to drive, but yes, you do feel special inside them. For an interesting bit of trivia, the surrounds for the side grilles at the front were chromed on earlier Hawks and painted on the later ones, presumably to save money. The change must have taken place in the middle of the 62 model run, as they are pictured both ways when you look them up. Certainly the amount of chrome in the engine bay of this one is not how they left the factory! For another term for disparaging Fords, there is the Foulcan. Cheers.

Neighbor kid had a new 63 Studmaker Hawk. Black with a red interior and 4 on the floor. I still remember the plaque on the dash that read, "This car built expressly for Doug _______". He was kind of wild and trashed that beautiful machine. The local dealer was a car repair shop that had a spot on the floor marked out in paint stripes to display 1 new car. They sold a lot of Larks, but only 2 Hawks that I know of. The business still exists today. I doubt the present owner even knows they were a Studebaker dealer from 59 to 66. Thanks for this tribute to a classic car that will always have a place in my heart.

  • @automatedelectronics6062

Chrysler had 4-wheel disc brakes in 1950. They were nothing like conventional disc brakes.
That is a Midland power brake booster. A similar unit was used on the Tri-Five T-Birds, but those were single circuit. Jaguar used similar units in atleast their early-60's sedans, like the 420. If you had a single circuit brake system, you could easily add a Midland power brake unit. We had done it to older Jeep CJ's.
I'd go for the '63 Studebaker all day, any day!

GT Hawks are one of my favorites! A family friend had one from new in 1964 to 2018 and it was black like this beauty & sold it when she thought she was too old to drive at 92. 9:06 You probably know this already, but Studebaker for was for a while the only US importer of Mercedes Benz and that grille design was intentional. It just looks better than the old Mercedes design. 17:43 I think all rear seat floors were like that from the 53 Starlight Coupes all the way up to the 64 GT Hawk. The car sits so low that you have a frame member outboard of the rear footwell. WYR 1. Continental 2. The '53.

Even tho I'm a Corvair guy, Studebakers have a place in my heart. I was looking for a 64-66 Wagonaire before I bought my latest Corvair. That Hawk you covered looks like a really nice car! The issue with Studes is that they never had the $$ to modernize the chassis. You still have king pins, and I noticed that the pedals go thru the floor, rather than hanging under the dash. And, they have a really weird steering linkage. I owned a 62 Lark for one day. It threw a rod on the way home. No biggie, I got the car for free. I had to laugh at the pic of the spare tire, With the wide angle lens, it sure doesn't look like the wheel is centered in the tire! WYR= I would take any of them, but the Lincoln is just too big to fit in my garage, and same with the Caddy. The 53 was by far the best looking of the group, with the GT Hawk a close second. Great video, Jay!

1:55 Studebaker also offered the 1963 _Standard_ which was badged simply as _Studebaker._
It shared the Lark two-door and four-door sedans, and the Wagonaire bodies, but it was not marketed or badged as a Lark.
The Standard was similar to the earlier '57-'58 Scotsman models in standard equipment and very limited option availability.
Studebaker ran at least one ad with _Mr. Ed_ star Alan Young announcing the model and whispering the suggested retail price to passers-by who expressed astonishment.

4:19 Note the _Split brake system_ text calls out the dual circuit brakes "...standard equipment on all Larks and Cruisers."
Note the omission of the Avanti and Hawk models from that statement.
Disc brake Studebakers came with a single circuit system.
5:45 Depending on the market, the 170 cube six was available in some European examples, and the 259 V8 in Canada and other regions.
In the early seventies, Avanti Motor Corporation included information sheets stating that Studebaker never advertised horsepower for the Avanti-spec engines because (in part) of the disadvantage in displacement.
Incidentally, the R1 and R2 engines installed in Hawks and Larks carried the engine number prefix _JT_ and _JTS_ respectively instead of R1 and R2.
WYR1: I'd write in the '64 Hawk. The '62 and '63 Hawk stainless steel plate on the vertical plane of the rear deck covered the rust-prone ribbed stamping that dated back to 1956. Studebaker finally found the money to redesign the stamping for '64, providing a smooth and clean painted surface.
WYR2: Again, I'd write in the '64 Hawk, with the '55 Speedster as a second choice because the '55 had stronger brakes than the '53-'54s, the '54 would be my next choice because the '53s had serious teething pains.
WYR3: Broken record here, but '64 Hawk, but since we're going outside the Bourke coupes, I'd also write in an early-production '63 R1 Avanti with the three-speed (available from June to August, sixty cars so equipped), and air conditioning.

In a related topic to the day, the Avanti was a bit controversial in name. For those who knew contemporary European history. Benito Mussolini, an actual Fascist, the inventor.. father of the political party Fascism, began his life in politics as author of the Italian socialist newspaper, "Avanti!". It was a bit of a curiosity as to why Loewy chose that name here in post WWII America, I wonder if Loewy picked up a bit of an association to some buyers.

But I would love to have the 1980's Aero T-Bird with the Turbo!! To me it was the best modern T-Bird, the style has aged very well compared to the model that replaced it!

The Hawk GT is a beautiful car but I think a foot should've been removed from the wheelbase, and about nine inches from the rear overhang. With the exception of the 3/4-ton and commercial-sized trucks, it was longer than anything else in the lineup. Darned shame it's only running around on 15×4.5" wheels- I think wider ones would've made it look a little more buff.

The automatic transmission has an unusual feature in that it starts in 2nd gear from a stand start. However on wide open throttle from a standstart it will then start out in 1st gear and hold that gear up to about 40 miles an hour on wide open throttle. Also you can get a full throttle kickdown from 2nd to 1st gear below 25 miles an hour.

I would love to do one with both of them I’m open to anyone in this field I think it’s great when you see other car channels collaborating Derek from vice grip garage would be absolutely amazing, but he’s on a completely different level.

You could've gotten at least one Paxton belt driven centrifugal blower on at least the '64 Hawk. McCullough was one of Studebaker's company purchanses and became Paxton. It was part of the R2 option.
The 62-64 Gran Tourismo Hawk is the one I wanted as a kid. No longer made by the time I was 16 with $600 I'd earned to by a car with.

Oddly, my Dad was working with GEICO running their data services and assisted getting Zip Code rolled out as it saved them a ton of money, if it worked. They made it work...free.
Look up Studebenz, was a concept car. It still exists and one guess who owns her... That is a brake booster in front of the battery, note the GM style brake light switch on the front.

Awesome thank you so much for sharing that insight on zip code I always wondered if mail got to the wrong place without zip code because there are some towns with same name or close to same name roads
      Sweet choices

Love this car and Studebaker in general, but honestly, I resent the fact Studebaker screwed over Packard and that leaves a bit of a black mark to me.

      Yeah I love both companies
But like you after studebaker catfished packard it was the same for me
I also have no idea why studebaker got to call all the shots when it was packard take over of studebaker

How come for American car loving folks the coupe has to have 2 doors even as a wagon especially in classic cars while Mercedes-Benz now in 2024 offers mostly 4 doors coupe cars, and the same folks do buy those?

I world rather I: Studebaker GT Hawk & I would rather II the Golden Hawk (I actually do not like the tailfins but can't resist the Supercharged power). Brook Steven responsible for some of awesome car design: Willys Pick-up & Jeepster, Kaiser\Jeep\AMC Wagoneer, 1962 Studebaker Lark facelift, Excalibur, Wienermobile, and above all the 1962 GT Hawk makeover.
