      I think the issue is not that political parties emerged, but rather than key figures were so against them that they didn't account for how they would eventually emerge and then shape our politics. Parties are a logical way for voters to contribute to the course setting in a nation without each of them having to become hobbyist political theorists, the easy association of direction each party offers is extremely useful for the average person. It seems to me that regulating how parties operate is more realistic than wishing no parties existed.

      @@-i1007 Incorrect. If people want to vote for a third party, the presence of the third party in politics is the result of that voice being represented in government. Limiting the system to one choice or the other limits people in terms of what they're allowed to express by voting. A two-party system essentially constrains voters to either one polar opinion or the other, and having more representatives from different parties with different beliefs in every election would make that much, much less of an issue.

      This is actually not how politics were for most of the US history. Historically the 2 parties fought for the middle of the country, and it actually had a more moderating effect on politics. Compare that to multi-party systems which can make smaller more ideologically fringe parties in a position of power in their coalitions. So it's not the system, but it's other cultural and social changes in the last 30-40 years that have led to increased polarization. And no, it's not the "Republicans" fault. Both parties are responsible, it takes 2 to tango.

      Just as a counter-argument (I don't think the 2 party system is anywhere near perfect) but I've heard this as a pro 2-party argument. In other countries like Italy, there are many political parties, and it makes it near impossible for any one of them to get anything done because they face opposition from almost every other party and nobody is anywhere close to a majority. The fact that we have a 2-party system means that we can actually get things done.

    • @TheZubata225
      @TheZubata225 4 роки тому +87

      @@gabrieljreed You should read up a little more on government systems in Europe. For instance, in Czech Republic, you have fractured parliament with no-one holding majority, but you form a coalition (compromising on your program with similar parties) to get that majority. It is harder to get stuff done, sure, but it is also harder for extremists to pass harmful legislation. The two party system is horrid imo, as for a party striving to win, they only have to appear to be lesser evil to their counterpart, not be actually any good.

      Mhmm, and What’s more interesting is when you compare republicans and democrats on a political compass. While we normally consider Democrats to be on the left their actually on the right close to moderate. Meanwhile the republicans are far right. The reasoning for this being the Cold War, and our fear of communism. Which means technically our two party system is a one party system.
      It’s also why the right can become more and more right while the left stays mostly the same.

    we should've listened to George Washington, he said that political parties would divide America and look where we are now
    EDIT: i did not mean one party only, that would be extremely controlling and make our political climate even worse. what i mean is that i think that political parties have divided america and that instead of two parties that each pick a candidate all the people running for president should run independently. this is for many reasons
    1. voting for a person not a party ( ex : people who vote republican no matter who the candidate is )
    2. not getting stuck in a one or the other situation ( ex : “settle for biden” if you don’t want trump in office you have to “settle for biden” because if you vote on an independent or really small party you are basically throwing away your vote because only republicans and democrats win )
    and i’m sure i’m forgetting some other good reasons but those are the main ones, hope this clarifies some things ☺️🇺🇸

      And yet, being too extreme is supposed to alienate a large chunk of the electorate, because most people are around the centre. Bit left, bit right, rarely far from the centre.
      And you kinda see it with Bernie Sanders in the Democratic party: both times he lost to safer, more neutral candidates. They feared his centre-left politics (I'm Canadian) would alienate too many voters. To appeal to as many voters as possible, every party should want to attract neutral voters. Which means gravitating towards the centre, with some variation in the smiles of candidates.
      And yet, it doesn't seem to work like that with the Republican party. They just move more and more to the right, and their base just seem to follow them, dragging the whole political spectrum to the right, then somehow still getting the votes.
      I... don't understand the United-States, it seems. I don't get how someone like Trump could get elected anywhere. Maybe some village in Florida. But president? Really?

      Its mainly due to the broad canvas this paints, in the US you guys tend to attach identity with politics (really don't understand that tbh) so saying 'Republicans broke something' will make a lot of people attach that with 'they're blaming me and my friends' in a very human, tribal way people are obviously going to respond negatively.
      Again this was also addressed in the video, polite journalists don't want to offend roughly half the population so avoid blaming one side completely. It might very well be the Republican parties fault but there are more tactful ways to phrase it.
      Example: Republican politicians are breaking the government/democracy

    • @PitchManFreak107
      @PitchManFreak107 6 років тому +4

      @@PitchManFreak107 Both parties have changed yes, I believe the host shows this in a pretty info graphic showing both parties straying from the US centre line. But I would argue the republicans are out of control. The democrats have never refused to meet a republican nominee for anything. They haven't refused to even look at one of Trumps bills before voting no. The republican politicians are like a group of racist old men sitting in a bar playing poker; if you aren't one of them they want nothing to do with you. Time and time again the democrats try to compromise and the republicans refuse to budge. Both times the government has almost shut down is 100% because the Republicans have refused to compromise on anything.

      +GCOS Benbow I guess the best way to avoid offending Republicans with the title and getting them to check out right away and not even listen to the evidence would be to change the title to something like, 'Republican Leaders broke something'. Some would probably still get offended because... well that's America for you, but it probably would not be as bad.
      +Xanatos Maybe you don't agree with the statistics (No quotations around them btw... those are just cold hard facts) because you are looking for more sound in your own echo chamber? I mean, the extent to which ideologies have changed can be measured and while both parties have changed... you can determine which has changed more.
      And to both of ya... America should get rid of the party system... it honestly is terrible for us and does nothing but divide us. I mean... we should not vote for someone just because they are in the same political party as us... we should vote for someone because we believe they will truly do the best job. And political parties just hold us back. I mean, do you guys know that there is a position in each political party called the party whip? Their job is to literally just to enforce the party's platform by getting everyone in the party to vote the way the party leaders want them to vote... as you can probably tell, it's done in very shady ways sometimes.. like threatening to withhold funds and fund an opposition candidate for the next election if they don't vote a certain way. The longer I follow American politics, the more apparent it becomes to me that a two-party system combined with an antiquated electoral system is a deadly combination. In a multi-party system, even in democracies where polarization occurs, younger generations tend to vote out establishment parties in favour of new ones that with time enter the political mainstream and assume positions of power. The system is more self-regulating and the voters less entrenched. In certain elections it's not infrequent to vote for candidates hailing from different parties, e.g. an A party mayor, a B party city councillor and a C party member to a regional government for example. In a multi-party system someone like Sanders would probably be able to introduce some of his policies decades ago as part of a junior coalition party. Cruz and the more moderate Republicans like Flake or Murkowski wouldn't even be in the same party.

    To all those criticizing the title of the video, or saying you could say the same of Democrats, you have missed the point. The point of the video is to establish how and why we got to our particular moment in politics. The answer is unequivocally the Republican party's strategy since 2009. If you paid attention, the video actually demonstrates that the Republicans are to blame by a significant increase in intransigent party politics, which is clearly responded to by the Democrats. This is a video demonstrating that the "both sides" narrative is false. To say in response "both sides" is basically ignoring the facts, plugging your ears and shouting: "nuh-uh!" You are ignorantly perpetuating the reasons we got here in the first place.
    Face fact, Republicans have rejected compromise in a system that is founded upon compromise. The Republican party HAS broken US politics, and possibly our republic, we shall see.

    • @imagoblack
      @imagoblack 6 років тому +12

      I agree that Republicans broke it. But we have to hold both sides accountable to fix it. We can’t just allow the left to justify resorting to the same tactics by saying “well they started it”
      But all and all...I’ll say that this was a well argued and fair video.

    • @wagrhodes13
      @wagrhodes13 6 років тому +32

      @@imagoblack At this point, I am not convinced there is anything the Democrats, or the political Left can do. The Republicans have basically shut real discourse down. People are not talking across the aisle, and recent events show there is little point for the Democrats to reach out or to trust Republicans when they do. There is little Congressional or Senatorial Democrats can do other than responding in kind. Capitulation doesn't help anyone. Liberal and progressive voters have kept electing their candidates. Ultimately the burden to fix this falls to conservatives. Conservatives across the country need to reexamine their values and where it has brought them. Conservatives will have to take steps to come to the table again. A good start would be to stop running interference for Trump and seriously entertain charges.

    • @alexs1640
      @alexs1640 6 років тому +17

      You bring up a great point, it's going to take conservatives with conservative values to fix this. The politicians have basically done anything for power and unfortunately a large part of their constituents have fallen in line. They'll ignore a man cheating on his pregnant wife as their representative as long as he's doing things for them. We need good wholesome people on both sides to say anything for power isn't acceptable

      @DefiantBoris You're operating from some faulty assumption here. The Second Amendment wasn't a political issue at all, for either "side" until the late 1960s (and really not an issue if any significance until the 1980s). Asking if Democrats have always been in favor of repealing the Second Amendment is like asking how George Washington responded to people asking the feds to regulate Facebook.

I think addressing this kind of behavior is the crux of the video.
