Hahaha french dude said "bonjour, allez un jolie film" - "hello, what a beautiful video/movie" (surely speaking of the landscape & mountains you were filming)
I live in the American south, and 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) is a cool day lol. It was about 75 yesterday in November! In the summer, it gets well over 100 Fahrenheit (38C) so we will have to run either early in the morning or at night.
Thank you for being honest about being anxious for your long run. I get so nervous for mine when they are over 16 miles. It's comforting to me that this happens to professional runners as well.
Thanks for the answers, Phily ! I'm not sure I heard the man perfectly, but I think he said "Allez un joli film", which means "Go on, a pretty/lovely movie".
To add on the recommendation about safe running: 1) I consider an ABSOLUTE MUST to enable what Garmin calls "Live Track". Every time you start a run it will send an email to your chosen contact(s), with a link where they can follow your location on the map real time. I expect other brands have a similar feature. 2)Disable public sharing of your running routes on Strava. I never understood why people do that.
I think that’s only an option when you take your phone with you so it has mobile data right? “find my friends” on iphone, or a WhatsApp sharing locations are good options for those without a Garmin!
Heat training is actually better than altitude training for stimulating blood cells production! I'm a pro cyclist and we a whole lot of both! Not only heat training promotes a quicker production of hemoglobin, it also improves the production of white blood cells! I would research a littlemore into it if I were you! You might be missing out on some pretty big gains that are much simpler and quicker to achieve than sending weeks in altitude! I live in Andorra with is also 2000m hight just a few ks from Font Romeu and I assure you I get q lot more quantified benefits from heat training than living at 2000m
Love the encouraging words for the fifteen minute mile runner! Gave me a boost too as, coming back from long illness, that's where I am now. Not sure whether it helps or adds frustration that I know I used to be faster, many years ago...
Philly! On the temperature training question I think you may have missed. The hotter the air the less oxygen in it because it is less dense than cooler air. Cooler air is more dense and hence has more oxygen molecules. So in a way it is “similar” to altitude train.
Great biomechanics answer! At Run3D we also have noticed significant variation in elite athletes mechanics, as there is in those who run a little less. Our philosophy is usually to smooth out rather than make wholesale changes and only then if it will help in the case of injury or to improve performance. keep up the good work. :)
Very Cool Video, thank you! ☀️ As far as I‘m informed there are ideed studies showing, that specific heat training protocols show similar adaptions like increasing your hemoglobin content etc., thus have a similar impact as altitude training😉 …but not so shure if this is so cheap to realize😊
I actually think it's sexist, of course by context, since I'm forced to wear it as part of the school uniform during race days. I'd rather wear tights or leggings or anything longer so I don't feel like an idiot trying to avoid wardrobe mishaps while I'm running xc, and also it's just uncomfortable with them wedgie, and inner thigh chafing. My teammates who are fine with it are definitely the ones with none of those issue nor body-image issues. It's an unspoken thing though, since whenever we brought it up, people will counter it with freedom whatever. At least hs had us wearing short shorts. Even then, I was already self-conscious. Women's running uniform definitely made some quit, and got some of us into ed and body image issues.
28:40 You've hit the nail on the head there Phily! In my early days of running I had horrific shin pain that got so bad I thought i'd got a stress fracture (it felt like the bone was sore just at very specific points when finger pressure added) Calf stretches & exercises helped greatly. Very soon after I started these I got a minor Gastroc rupture which took me out for 10 days but this was probably too much running before the exercises had worked properly (also the first day out in a new pair of running shoes so who knows). Physio recommendation definitely wise though as not every injury/pain is the same.
How does anyone get motivated to get up and go to work every day. It's not so much motivation, it's discipline. Watching people run motivates me but I still have to get up the next morning and hit the trail (or gym if it's raining) and it's HARD at 69 years old. I was motivated to go 20 miles today but I only had the discipline to do 10 but I'm just getting over a cold so I will go again tomorrow. If I had done 20 miles I would not go tomorrow so I will go faster tomorrow instead and do squats later today
I cured my shin splint in 2019 with a heating pad in about a week. I got it from hiking 800 miles (a little too fast) and had to quit and go home because if the pain and swelling but I was back on the trail in 10 days. Just rest and heat and two doses a day of ibuprofen the first few days.
Great video Phily! And thanks to the patreon’s for all the great questions. I couldn’t see the link in the description for the shin splint video (I’m looking forward to strengthening my calves!)
25 degrees is a lovely day. I wouldn't count that as heat training. Maybe 27 is getting a little warm for running. Our coach has had us training in 34 degrees and touting it's benefits. Obviously at adjusted paces.
I’m still trying to do the math here to F lol. I think it’s like 80? Same temp different places can be an unfair comparison I’ve noticed. Like the same temp 4 hours east of me at the beach is always a shock when visiting home. “It’s the humidity that gets you” and the 0 shade because everyone wants to pretend they live in Florida and just have a couple little palm trees if anything. Worst I ran in last summer was 99 (106 heat index or 37-41C!). It reached 90F/32C very consistently xc season in high school when we’d run at like 3:30. That was tough, but i think it had it’s advantages. One year we hosted regionals and my friend made states in the 3200m despite being seeded like 7th and needing 4th. Got a 10 second pr and the favorite dropped and most underperformed while we excelled in the abnormally brutal conditions (pushing 100 that day too).
@@TheAmazingHuman-Man280F is nearly 27c. They say its Humid in florida, i don't agree. Having ran in Singapore (88F 98% humidity) or Pekanbaru Sumatra. But coming to FL in March. we'll see what I can do but I'd say quicker than I can here. I have ran in Delhi in May (44C but dry heat). Here in the UK typically in winter very high humidity , say 90%. Fl not 90%, more I think 55%. Tops.
@@peterharridge8565 Never left the country but agree that Florida isn’t too bad. It’s hotter maybe, but a different kind of pain compared to places like NC, SC, GA. Also went to CA/west coast last year and was similar. Like it was hot and I got sunburned, but at least I felt like I could breathe lol. Water was way colder too to my surprise. UK is my first pick if I ever travel out of country. Want to visit the motherland and visit some parkruns lol.
@@TheAmazingHuman-Man2 Really SC is worse for running. My guess is you mean June-August. I tend to go in March/April, as running now (before cycling), but went this time of year mostly so I can come back in form for cycling season in Summer. But I was trying to go SC but as I also had to be in Florida to meet up with my sister (her 70th soon) and my brother who lives in Florida. I couldn't sort it without great expense. What is wrong with your air fares now? And the train doesn't go to Myrtle Beach. What I have been after was running on sand possibilities. So settled on Daytona rather than Myrtle beach. My brother lives there. I ran on sand before up in South Uist in the Hebrides in Scotland and it was great. I can recommend that, I rented a cottage for 2 weeks. Only thing was there was a day when I couldn't run at all (late March) as too windy. I found that heart rate was up in intervals on sand compared to the road. From memory about 8 beats for same effort (172 V 164 say). But the sand goes for miles in South Uist, I did 8 miles on the sand (firm sand as ran close to water) within a long run (coming back by road). I'd say that was about 2005 from memory aged 49. But have cycled intervals in Texas and found that was the quickest I have ever been despite not being in Summer form yet. 8 X1M in 17-30. This was in 27C-30C temps in late March in Houston. And at that time was also running in Texas but not every day. I also did a 5K race at that time in Texas, I think a 21 was what I did. But wasn't that happy with it, I know that.
Thanks for answering my questions! Really interesting about the caffeine intake - some people seem to be able to handle 150mg plus and others, very small, so I do find it interesting knowing how much tolerance varies between people. Also on your hair, it looks fab by the way, I just noticed in your early videos it was long and then you'd cut a lot off. I wondered if it was for convenience as it's a pain washing it a lot if you run nearly every day or even twice a day. Best GIF was Daniel killing the PC lol ;-)
There has been a bit of research in Norway that suggests you can get a temporary increase in RBC production, following the initial increase in plasma volume from heat training. Don’t have the references at hand, I was surprised when I read about this and don’t know if it’s been confirmed by lots of research. But maybe that’s where the «poor mans altitude» idea comes from??
That's funny about the eating your dinner because I watched a couple of elite marathon runners from Africa and about 5 of the 8 fastest runners ran like that and one of them won the race. I cant remember which marathon it was because I watched a few of them last week but it was one of the Olympic marathons . . .
Ok the the running questions are all well and good but back to the Dragibus haribo, my friend brought me some back from France, what are the flavours??? …I swear some are washing powder flavour 😂 but eat 3 different flavours together they taste good! They’re mainly horrible, but I like them! 😂😂
#coachbowden Philly, obviously there is no substitute for high altitude training, but is there anything to be done if you don’t have access to mountains? Tricks to simulate high altitude you may have heard within you inner circle of elites?
I believe the french guy said "ah c'est un joli film que vous allez avoir" which means "you gonna get a nice video there"... and he was pretty right ;)
You actually have a decent voice. I thought mine was OK til I recorded it . . . what a joy killer that was LOL You could have a side gig as a singing marathoner
Another good vid Phily like the way you encourage people who think that their pace is slow . Everyone has their own pace and with training it will improve . Everyone should enjoy just running and not worry about people thinking they are slow 👍👍
I see male runners continually training with no shirts and very short shorts. They just don’t race like that. I remember Nick Bare saying he would run naked if he could.
Steven's right about the Oakleys. If you're asking about the sunglasses at the beginning of the video, it's goodr Strange Things Are Afoot At The Circle Gs model. Philly wears goodr sunglasses a lot in her videos.
I don't know how to say this any other way but all of these women (except the Frenchy) are just so *intensely* British 🤣 I feel like this as much a cultural education channel as it is a running one :P
@@joaquimschaeverbeke9468 I know french, thanks :) I still hear it as "jolie fille" but maybe he says "jolie film" because he saw Phily filming the beautiful view. Both would be a pretty french thing to say
First things first, heel strikers. Hmm don't think there are many elites doing that. And my two penneth is A) it is caused by too heavily built shoes. If a heel runner would they be one if running barefoot. The answer is no. So it is the shoes. Yes they may have got used to it, that's an issue for sure. But for me (years ago) when putting on racing shoes on the road I was far better in those racing shoes. And then there is pronation, I only ever pronated in a heavily built shoe, so again that is the shoe. Now shoes have completely changed since years ago, racing shoes definitely. I was concerned with buying a pair of Hoka, awful shoe. (£135). Couldn't feel the road and pronated badly, side of my toe was badly hurt. I only did 3 runs and can see damage on side of shoe. Now I only walk in them, that is all they are fit for. So I am also concerend about some racing shoes. I bought a New Balance Fuel cell , and because I had correct size and impressed, I bought a NB pacer. these are both stiff enough not to pronate for me, and probably are only 4-6 MM drop. For me anything bigger than 6 MM drop will make you heel run. Regardless of whether you want to. And if you heel strike you won't be able to up pace downhill. For me I am shocked by runners not running faster downhill. think I know why now, one heel striking and two arms close to body. On seeing a coach's UA-cam video talking about upping cadence, he said arms close to body (and this video mentioned). I tried it uphill it works, but don't think you should be trying to up cadence without stride increase. If you are only 160 (I call it 80) it really isn't an issue if you are slow. Because years ago (when running sub 7 pace in a 6M training run and 6-15 in a 10M), I was doing 88-92 and now (as just started again and aged 67) i am doing 83-84 but was at first doing 79 when a lot slower than now. But that said that 88-92 was me counting so likely doesn't include uphill so not average. This 83-84 is average as my watch tells me. So again max has been 88-90. Hot weather running, I have always been better in the heat. What's the reason, breathing better. I wouldn't accept that say 25C is any slower than a lesser temp in say up to half marathon. I once did a 1-26 in warm temps (Colchester half), and was 28th out of 535. Normally I wouldn't be 50th in such a race. But have been to Inodnesia for running for weeks at a time (6-7 weeks). Once I did a 1-21 first race back from Indonesia. Average temps 31C when running up to an hour and a half. Could I run as quick there, no. The other thing is you can clear up niggles or slight injuries quicker because of Oxygen available. Aged about 50 I did a long 19 for a 5K in Florida when it was 27C, I wasn't able to beat a 43 here for a 10K. So I was quicker. And I was able to do 7 min mile pace in training (in Daytona Beach) for an 8m run (accurate I had a Garmin watch). But went up to Idaho after Florida for a Marathon. Lucky to get round half, I was useless. So warm is always good. Because breathing is better. You want to get over injury, go to tropics. And not altitude.
Don't want to be mean but what a weird question? Revealing->Sexual->Sexist I dont quite get how people have that thought process. On the contrary, I am quite jealous that for women it is completely normal to wear revealing workout outfits, showcasing all the effort you have put into your body, while for men doing the same would be borderline creepy? Obviously the whole thing is very different for all the "beach" sports, where it's not allowed for women to wear long shorts. Everybody should just be able to wear whatever they want.
Interesting, I certainly feel the same about beach sports as you. I just have never understood the vast difference in attire for Male and Female competitive runners. Find it odd I do.
I’m a man and run in spandex shorts because I’ve found that they support me better and I have less chafing. They also have a pocket that holds my phone against my leg tightly so it doesn’t move around at all. After a long run, I wear compression leggings because I feel it speeds recovery and makes my legs feel better generally. My daughters are “scandalized” all the time. I always wear a longer loose shirt to cover things up, but I always get looks if I go out like that. I’m definitely not doing it to show off, so I wish it was more acceptable for me to wear what is most comfortable.
I'm with you there, I wear tighter shorts due to a previous abdominal surgery. I need the support. I found it stupid to race in layers so I just race in my tight shorts. I'd wear briefs if it was socially acceptable for men, especially on hilly courses, because I sometimes feel that my tight shorts create resistance to my stride (especially on downhills) and they'd be the perfect balance between abdominal support and freedom of leg movement. Sadly though, society is kind of sexist against guys wearing shorter and tighter clothing. :(
Yip . Why would you even bring up “ sexiest” when I would imagine that the response would be negative! Just keep it running related , otherwise you have people like me posting negative comments re how sexy they are - for which you / all are not- sorry
It's not a stupid question. There are several sports who regulate what female athletes can wear in a different way from male athletes (gymnastics, beach volleyball..), and the justifications there are almost entirely appearance-based.
I mean it's a fair concern after plenty of female athletes have refused to wear regulations bikinis in volleyball and gymnastics out of protest since it doesn't add to their performance and the men get to be much more covered. I don't think it's sexist as long as you get a choice.

They look like Oakley EVZero to me
Steven's right about the Oakleys. If you're asking about the sunglasses at the beginning of the video, it's goodr Strange Things Are Afoot At The Circle Gs model. Philly wears goodr sunglasses a lot in her videos.
@@its1027 ah, not the GoodR. I have a couple of those myself.
that pronunciation on dragibus 😂😂😂
How is it supposed to be pronounced? 😂
@@cori2356 I'm not sure how to write it but like "drajeebuss" (the "u" in "bus" is pronounced like bus in French, the symbol is the upside down v)
I don't know how to say this any other way but all of these women (except the Frenchy) are just so *intensely* British 🤣 I feel like this as much a cultural education channel as it is a running one :P
haha the way you said 'Tapas' bar =p
10:57 I am not a french speaker, but did I hear jollie fille = pretty girl?
I am sure he was being nice, not weird.
Eating dinner! 😂
do you like the fresh foam more v4 or the new 1080 for daily training? cant decide which one i want, never tried NB shoes before
Are there high altitude places you can live in the UK so you can get the benefits' year round like we have flagstaff here in the US?
nope, I think the highest village in the UK is < 500m
Wait, why can't you have pepper spray in the UK??
wooo ! purple turtle !!
Thats how much bake off i watch that i thought as i was putting my phone down that i clicked on a GBBO advert lmao
What are those glasses 3:10
Oakley EVZero
16:21 - hahahaha
I hope daniel isn't edition with Premiere
The man said something about "jolie fille" if I heard it correctly which literally translate to beautiful girl
no because he says film(film) or fil(thread) or something like this but not fille(girl) because in french you dont pronounce the l in fille
@@joaquimschaeverbeke9468 I know french, thanks :) I still hear it as "jolie fille" but maybe he says "jolie film" because he saw Phily filming the beautiful view. Both would be a pretty french thing to say
Aldershot massive! 😊
😊
My coach says I’m a chicken but eating dinner is also nice.
A chiken that knows how to use a keyboard ???? Yeah right !!
You know the arm swing too far away from my body 😅@@ifonly4486
Now I wanna know, what were you looking for on Tinder. 😂
I don’t think ‘Showcasing’ is the intention 🚩 If you want to run in your Speedo’s, go for it!
I don't think it is a weird question as the person clearly thought it was mandatory kit like in beach sports.
Yip . Why would you even bring up “ sexiest” when I would imagine that the response would be negative! Just keep it running related , otherwise you have people like me posting negative comments re how sexy they are - for which you / all are not- sorry
‘Allez’ go. Une jolie fille. A pretty girl.
It’s pretty much ‘ wow, a young fine girl’ . It’s more of a thing you say. The literal translation makes it sound creepy and it’s not.
It would mean that, but he did in fact say « un joli film ». He’s commenting on how nice the scenery will look in her video.
Unfortunately not very professional as chefs... 😜
The ones that think it’s sexist are woke.
Not sure you know what “woke” means mate. Might want to not use words you don’t understand.
@@davidrosenthal5795 I know full well mate. Have a good weekend. Cheers
Sexy not sexist 👌🏻
You misspelled Sexiest... running in ones underwear, whats wrong with people running half nakey...lololol
