The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques on the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays. Locitite 406 CA superglue is used in this process combined with CA superglue accelerator/activator to join the two dissimilar materials. Also used are details from Eduard Photoetch Brassin which are additional parts to the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit scales box
The second part shows the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers. Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush using Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo Needle/Nozzle: 0.15mm with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar).
The third part of the video demonstrates the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit using the BLACK-BASING technique to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar). Also included in this section on the Tamiya Matilda Mk.II in 1/35 scale model is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect. 3 layers of Mr Color GX100 Superclear III thinned with Mr Hobby Self Levelling Thinner 400 seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo.
Decals for the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit follow painting with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes of the Airfix Spitfire FR Mk.XIV in 1/48 scale model kit panel lines and surface which you can see in the video.
Next is the weathering of the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the Kitty Hawk Sukhoi SU-22 Fitter K in 1/48 scale model kit to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering. - Навчання та стиль
Hey everyone I'm back! Happy much-belated 2020 to you all, reason being that this project has taken me 2 months to complete. I hope you enjoyed the video despite having to listen to me for twice as long as normal 😂.
I'm also using new video software so getting to grips with that may result in some more visual effects in the upcoming videos!
Next I'm planning on making another, more detailed, display base for this model to work on what I learnt when making the Harrier airfield so keep a lookout for that over the next few weeks!

Welcome back marra. Superb work on the camo and finish. I recently built Revell`s MiG 21 SMT, there was a brilliant camo scheme for it, but it defeated me (I just could`nt get the definition) and I ended up doing a polished aluminium finish, so I`m watching in admiration of your free hand skill.
Not into modern aircraft , more WW1biplanes and figurines. This is a very informative, unselfish, high quality video of modelling techniques. I've learnt so much. Top man!

I would suggest the following to get you started;
A shopping list to start with would go something like this. These are some good value tools to get you going with an airbrush and compressor thrown in at the bottom when you're ready;

1200 Grit Sandpaper (More relevant to start with)

Tamiya Acrylic Paints (I use AK Interactive which are great, but harder to get hold of)
Tamiya X-20A Thinner for the paint (follow the video for thinning advice when you're ready)

Great work on this model. I really like your painting in that you don't use heavy washes. It looks very subtle. I'm also encouraged to see that even the experts have some issues with paint and the orange peel you had to sand out. I usually get compatibility issues.

Well, Thanks to you I just spent an hour and a half sanding the primer on my Hasegawa J35J Draken model very smooth, after watching the level of detail you put into your SU-22 I couldn't let it go! But all joking aside, thank you for showing us the skill and detail you achieve, you defiantly helped me bring my skills up a notch or two!

A wonderful build! Impressive painting, shading and weathering techniques! I've switched from building plastic models to larger RC models, but would really like to apply your techniques to my subjects. I am also building a large Fitter, and have considered this scheme. I wish there were available photos of the full scale aircraft, although I do know there are some walkaround sites of a couple of the Polish Su-22 birds...

I have been watching a few of your videos and your work is amazing. It has also inspired me to get back into modeling so I went out and bought a bunch of kits. My one knitpick with this build is there shouldn't be much weathering on ordnance. Missiles and bomb are kept in pristine condition so grease and oils won't disrupt electronics, homing, and RADAR receivers or get into cracks and crevices and cause chemical reactions with the explosives and solid fuel. Most ordnance is storage in weatherproof bunkers so any water streaking will be a minimal at best. The most you might get is some dirty hand prints or smudges while the ordnance is being assembled. Just my 2 schillings. Great work though.

Thank you for watching and the kind words. To answer your question - no I didn’t. The aircraft is quite large so I could see the details no problem on this one. It looks massive in camera but that area is around 15mm across making the rivets roughly 0.5mm - clear as day 😂

Just a quick suggestion, try cutting photo etch on something solid ie. Ceramic tile there's no fear of bending parts where you don't want bends. Love the build and paint work. Best wishes Vic.
Hi Vic. Yes I’ve seen this before and did actually cut out most of the PE on a hard plastic sheet but this was off camera. I’ll get one for next time as my next build has quite a lot of PE and don’t want it damaged

Hello, thank you and welcome! So the black base acts as 3 things;
Firstly it's a primer for the paint allowing it to adhere to the surface better and more evenly than to just straight to the surface of the model.
Second, the primer will highlight any flaws in the build such as scratches and seams that haven't been covered sufficiently before the paint is applied - allowing for rework before the paint goes on
Third, the black acts as a contrasting base in which the paint can be highlighted on using the mottlign technique. The mottling breaks up the uniformity of the surface colour and creates a pre-weathered look as though the aircrfat has been sun bleached and rain damaged. The more layers of the mottling will gradually build a more even tone. Less layers will create a more varied tone but will be also more transparent. The size of the mottle pattern will also determine the coverage of the paint and make a more even tone the smaller you go.

17:26 That is not a ‘Mach cone’. It would be better described as a shock cone. A Mach cone is a cone shape that appears in Schlieren photography when shockwaves form at the front of an aircraft that is travelling at significant supersonic speed. As an interesting exercise, it is possible to get an accurate estimate of an aircraft’s Mach number simply by measuring the angle compared to the axis of the aircraft.

Hello and thank you. Oh I wasn’t aware of this. The decals were supplied in the kit so it guess it’s Kitty Hawk making Russian markings on this particular kit but keeping the stencils from their other SU-22’s which have polish markings. Good spot though I would never have known!

What can i use for protecting my paint? I have enamel washes, is there any tamiya product or ak product that you know of?
If you use enamel washes try to use an Acrylic or Lacquer based clear coat. This way when you use the washes and enamel thinner to remove them it will not take the clear coat along with it. In basic terms try to not use enamel based clear if you're using enamle based washes

Hello and welcome. I find the mix of colours by using reference images. The instructions also show the colours to be used but are often inaccurate so I prefer to use real aircraft as a guide. As for my techniques I am self taught and try to learn something new on each model to improve. Thanks for watching!
How do you clean the airbrush, switching between colours?
Hello. I use alcohol thinners for acrylic and cellulose thinner for lacquer paints. I flush through the airbrush until the thinner in the colour cup is clear. After each session I put in a sonic cleaner (for jewellery) containing the thinner required for a full strip down of the airbrush at the end.
Can you explain the 3mm section on the engine? I have partially made this model, and would like to know if this is something I need to do

What brushes do you use for the fine detailed painting?

Kitty hawk is just a bad high when assembling the box art and presentation is nice and that’s about it

What’s you thinning ratio for the super clear?
I thin around 50:50 with Self Levelling Thinner. Its almost impossible to thin GX100 too much in my experience but this works best for me

I heard that the assembly of kittyhawk is a pain in the ass.Just like Kinetic's model.
I've never built or seen Kinetic's kit but this one take a lot of thought to get right. The fuselage and preperation work on other parts require a lot of attention before you can commit to applying glue or paint. Overall though it makes a very nice kit if you take your time and think before moving forward

Yes I have, sorry I misunderstood your comment. The F/A-18D wasn’t the best no, particularly around the intakes. This one requires you to be very careful prior to any major assembly and think ahead about the fit and problems that lie in wait - whereas the kinetic was difficult to build in an alternative manor to get around them. Overall this kit was really good, you just have to do two steps forward, one back and then glue 😂
Which needle ? 0,2 or 0,15? Air pressure for that distance? I´m gonna try this airplane, it's fantastic and your fitter is amazing.
I use a 0.15mm needle setup at 12psi. The paint is thinned around 50/50 to get nice smooth spray edges and barely pull back on the trigger. It's best to carefully build up the paint thickness along the edge or you'll get too much overspray. Hope this helps and good luck with your model. Thanks for watching :)

I have an super etendard from kitty hawk, and Im gonna start with it, before decide if I go with the Kitty Su17, or I go with the Hobby Boss Su17, bacause I've been reading too much reviews saying that this model has a lot of problems to build, and a real pain, even when the kitty has more detail.
The HB SU-17 is apparently not as good in terms of details as the KH kit. You do have to be VERY mindfull when building the KH because it does have many problems. I used this guide to compare them finescale.com/product-info/kit-reviews/2017/11/fitters-compared-kitty-hawk-versus-hobbyboss-build-review.
Overall I'm glad I went with the KH because it does make for a good kit as long as your careful and take the time to dry fit EVERYTHING before assembling. Even try dry fitting sub-assemblies before buidling those too.
A good build guide is this one (if mine isn't detailed enough) and will show you the shortfalls of the instructions and build sequence. I can assure you that following the instructions on this one WILL lead you to problems.
Oh you'll also need this the48ers.com/su-17-22-intake-correction-set-kittyhawk.html because the kit version is horrendous not just in detail and shape, but in strength to actuall hold the front end of the fuselage together!

I knew the finescale article, and I've been looking several reviews, and looks like the HB is not as goog in detail as the KH....The thing is that in Amazon, yesterday, the HB one was at 48 euros, and in 48ers, the big ed for the HB Su-17 was at 23 euros, instead 42. So, I've decided to go for the HB, with Big Ed, kabuki experts mask (just to try the masks for making the canopy seals), and pitot and guns in brass. I'm not as talented as you are, and looking at the KH Super Etendard that I have in my collection , looks like is gonna be a pain to build, so, de decision was no easy, but the price helped a lot.
