    Hey everyone I'm back! Happy much-belated 2020 to you all, reason being that this project has taken me 2 months to complete. I hope you enjoyed the video despite having to listen to me for twice as long as normal 😂.
    I'm also using new video software so getting to grips with that may result in some more visual effects in the upcoming videos!
    Next I'm planning on making another, more detailed, display base for this model to work on what I learnt when making the Harrier airfield so keep a lookout for that over the next few weeks!
    Happy modelling,
    The Inner Nerd

      Welcome back marra. Superb work on the camo and finish. I recently built Revell`s MiG 21 SMT, there was a brilliant camo scheme for it, but it defeated me (I just could`nt get the definition) and I ended up doing a polished aluminium finish, so I`m watching in admiration of your free hand skill.

      Thank you and please to see that the videos are enjoyable to binge watch!
      I would suggest the following to get you started;
      A shopping list to start with would go something like this. These are some good value tools to get you going with an airbrush and compressor thrown in at the bottom when you're ready;
      Plato Wire Cutters
      Mr Bevel Tweezer MT204
      800 Grit Sandpaper
      1200 Grit Sandpaper (More relevant to start with)
      Tamiya/AK Interactive Extra Thin Poly Cement
      Tamiya Acrylic Paints (I use AK Interactive which are great, but harder to get hold of)
      Tamiya X-20A Thinner for the paint (follow the video for thinning advice when you're ready)
      AK Interactive Weathering Brush Set (Not only for weathering)
      Gravity Feed Airbrush Starter Set - Sealey AB9321
      Starter Compressor - HSeng Airbrush Compressor

    I have been watching a few of your videos and your work is amazing. It has also inspired me to get back into modeling so I went out and bought a bunch of kits. My one knitpick with this build is there shouldn't be much weathering on ordnance. Missiles and bomb are kept in pristine condition so grease and oils won't disrupt electronics, homing, and RADAR receivers or get into cracks and crevices and cause chemical reactions with the explosives and solid fuel. Most ordnance is storage in weatherproof bunkers so any water streaking will be a minimal at best. The most you might get is some dirty hand prints or smudges while the ordnance is being assembled. Just my 2 schillings. Great work though.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  3 роки тому

      Thank you and I'm pleased to hear that I've helped inrpire you get back into the hobby once more :) The ordnance on this one was picked out from reference images taken with the payload off the aircraft so may have been in storage outside or abandoned in some cases. Thanks for watching :)

    17:26 That is not a ‘Mach cone’. It would be better described as a shock cone. A Mach cone is a cone shape that appears in Schlieren photography when shockwaves form at the front of an aircraft that is travelling at significant supersonic speed. As an interesting exercise, it is possible to get an accurate estimate of an aircraft’s Mach number simply by measuring the angle compared to the axis of the aircraft.

The Su-22 is a formidable aircraft, built one on 1/72 scale from the Angolan Air Force (from the period of the Border War with the SAAF). I learned a new technique from your video; the use of a dremel to remove the excess plastic! Looks to work very well! 🙂Greetings and looking forward for the next video!

    Really fantastic thanks for the videos. I'm new to modelling...may I ask why you do the mottling on the black first

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому +1

      Hello, thank you and welcome! So the black base acts as 3 things;
      Firstly it's a primer for the paint allowing it to adhere to the surface better and more evenly than to just straight to the surface of the model.
      Second, the primer will highlight any flaws in the build such as scratches and seams that haven't been covered sufficiently before the paint is applied - allowing for rework before the paint goes on
      Third, the black acts as a contrasting base in which the paint can be highlighted on using the mottlign technique. The mottling breaks up the uniformity of the surface colour and creates a pre-weathered look as though the aircrfat has been sun bleached and rain damaged. The more layers of the mottling will gradually build a more even tone. Less layers will create a more varied tone but will be also more transparent. The size of the mottle pattern will also determine the coverage of the paint and make a more even tone the smaller you go.
      Hope that makes sense!

      Thank you for watching and the kind words. To answer your question - no I didn’t. The aircraft is quite large so I could see the details no problem on this one. It looks massive in camera but that area is around 15mm across making the rivets roughly 0.5mm - clear as day 😂

    it's beautiful, it's awesome! thank you for your videos, they're always like "how to..." in scale modelling for me :)
    you didn't show the decals in the unpacking part of the video, but there's one little mistake, on 39:37 on the wing there's a mark "NIE STAWAC" ("No Step"), it's in Polish, but not in Russian - "НЕ ВСТАВАТЬ"

      Thank you. Yes someone else has pointed this out too but I was unaware of the language difference. Maybe the stencils are from another KH Fitter kit with polish markings and they never changed it for the Russian ones...

    Why did you use the splatter bit - looks like you painted straight over it with heavy paint ?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому

      It's used to create varying tones for a base layer of the camouflage colours - like how pre shading works. Then the light coat of paint over the top shows it very faintly. Unfortunately to get the effect to be visible on camera I'd have to paint so lightly it wouldn't even be coloured so that's why it looks as though I just cover it all up. The final pictures show the effect it has better. Also it works more effectively on darker colours as the contrast between the white base and dark camo highlights the differences more

    What can i use for protecting my paint? I have enamel washes, is there any tamiya product or ak product that you know of?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому

      If you use enamel washes try to use an Acrylic or Lacquer based clear coat. This way when you use the washes and enamel thinner to remove them it will not take the clear coat along with it. In basic terms try to not use enamel based clear if you're using enamle based washes

    hallo, i write you from italy and i have some questions for you :how do you know a lot of particular that you apply in the video., and where you find the mix ofm the colours? thank you for the answher. Augusto from Italy

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому

      Hello and welcome. I find the mix of colours by using reference images. The instructions also show the colours to be used but are often inaccurate so I prefer to use real aircraft as a guide. As for my techniques I am self taught and try to learn something new on each model to improve. Thanks for watching!

    Hi, this is really good build, and nice painting. Just one question, you used Soviet marking but polish stencils ... why? Is there some reason, or was this combination historically used? Thank you.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому

      Hello and thank you. Oh I wasn’t aware of this. The decals were supplied in the kit so it guess it’s Kitty Hawk making Russian markings on this particular kit but keeping the stencils from their other SU-22’s which have polish markings. Good spot though I would never have known!

    How do you clean the airbrush, switching between colours?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 роки тому

      Hello. I use alcohol thinners for acrylic and cellulose thinner for lacquer paints. I flush through the airbrush until the thinner in the colour cup is clear. After each session I put in a sonic cleaner (for jewellery) containing the thinner required for a full strip down of the airbrush at the end.

    How do you rate the riveting tool you used on this build?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  Рік тому +1

      Its okay but I prefer the one from SBS as the wheel is smaller and you can get into tighter areas with it. The diameter of the wheel affects this the most so the smaller the better. Thanks for watching!
