    If you're going to redo a Trek film's effects, do Final Frontier. It needs the most help, frankly.

      i think the complexity of some of these Final Frontier effects would be a crazy fun challenge. A bit more complicated, but even the shuttle in Yosemite shot early on would be a great start 😂

      I 100% agree with Tony. Re-imaging the effects for STV would be the best use of your time. Perhaps after you hone your blender skills you could deepfake Sybok into Sean Connery

  • @Destructor111
    @Destructor111 2 роки тому +52

    Beautiful work here. The only constructive criticisms I can offer are:
    1) You're slightly over-zealous with the focus pulls - it makes the ship feel small when it's in focus but the background is not. For most real world cameras, the 100m-wide saucer 200m away is going to be at approximately the same focal length as the planetoid and stars beyond.
    2) Almost the conceptual inverse of that - Scraping the hull too closely feels like the ILM motion control rig the camera is mounted on is going to gouge the model.
    Absolutely beautiful work on the lighting, materials, even the film grain. Everything is dialled in perfectly.

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  2 роки тому +17

      It's such a fine line isn't it! Yeah I agree, the focus pull on the first shot is wrong, and I think the final shot has it too where it messes up the scale.
      My hope with angles is to get close enough that it would replicate the snorkel lens that Trumbull was using on The Motion Picture, because I did find that a few shots from ILM were on too long on a lens and it condensed the model down a bit.
      Fighting with the scale of the ships is part of the challenge that I'm intrigued by! With Star Wars style ships, it's easy to just slap greebles all over a section, add ladders and other scale-indicators, windows, hatches, etc. Not to diminish or be reductive, but I've done ships like that and had great results very quickly. But with the Star Trek ships, especially federation starships from this era, (TOS would be even harder) there's a real balance that needs to be struck in regards to the 'size and speed' of the camera relative to the building-sized ship.
      If you were a cameraman in a shuttlecraft trying to document this ship as it goes past, what lens would you use to how far away would you be, and how fast could you travel relative to it. Great example is the difference between the coverage of the fights in Pacific Rim vs it's sequel. The second one looks like a Power Rangers fight because the scale and speed of the camera isn't being respected.
      And at the same time, my real goal is to improve my 'fakery', making 3d models look like physical models, instead of making them look 'real'. As soon as it looks like a real object, the audience is happier to spend disbelief when it comes to scale etc.
      So then you're challenging the expectations for a camera rig! Like you said, it feels like the ILM motion control rig would be scraping the hull. However, Trumbull shot closer to the hull than ILM did, and his shooting model for the ship in 2001 was 55 FEET LONG. So then if the model is large enough, the camera proximity isn't as challenging. Except our brains have been trained on 2 or 3 foot models because Douglas Trumbull was a bit of a madman when it comes to his model scales (he said that the Enterprise model was only a quarter of the size that he would have preferred).
      But this is EXACTLY the analysis that I was wanting. Finding the balance, and being able to instinctively hit the right scale more frequently, with less refinement and revision.

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  Рік тому +1

      Yup! This test reel was extremely telling when it came to lens size, sensor size, and dof. I've been working on a 'scale' test just to nail all of that down, including relative speed and camera proximity. The ships are the size of aircraft carriers, so even if they move fast it should convey that weight.

  • @BVCStudios
    @BVCStudios 2 роки тому +2

    Very good work. you really are 95% there, which is brilliant. I would tone down the DOF on the close passes as it tends to make things look smaller. you would also need to model the interior rooms for the close passes...they work for the wide and even the medium but when you get close they break the shot. And lastly the gloss material needs to be a bit 'dirtier' to really sell up close.
    Great work!

    If you can improve on them, sure. There are more obvious candidates to start with, like The FInal Frontier (I've been working on some non-Enterprise shots myself), and some shots in the others. But honestly, the model work in many of the shots is extremely good and doesn't need replacing, no matter how good your CG might be. And please don't overdo the camera moves (I'm not saying you do, and certainly not in this video) - when a lot of guys think they can improve on the original they do so without any knowledge of composition, camera moves - why some work on an audience and why some don't - and make something inferior without understanding why. So from one VFX artist to another, have at it, dude.

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I would never want to approach this or portray it as an improvement, that would be incredibly egotistical of me. I can really only present an alternative. My 'sabotage' approach to TMP is giving me an opportunity to treat it as a bit of a satire, which is a good way to avoid direct comparison.
      However... I think I would need to approach TWOK in a similar manner, with a specific theme to my shots, instead of just trying to do the same shots or similar shots.
      I think what's been in my mind the most, especially after conversations with some of the original designers, is the lighting, the paint treatment, and the scale of the ships.
      So if I do re-approach TWOK, my goal would be to create shots that sell themselves as model-photography from the era, but without the drawbacks of bluescreen. With more realistic lighting scenarios (space is mainly dark, the ships light themselves, etc), and an almost exaggerated sense of scale.
      Trumbull said he would have rathered the model was about 3x larger I believe, so I'd be aiming to get the camera closer, move it slower, etc. Just really sell the scale of a 300m space-liner sized vessel.

    These are very good, but Wrath of Khan has been done to death, in terms of VFX redo's. The Motion Picture gets redone a lot as well. There's one UA-camr I know who even completed a project recently where they replaced all the VFX shots in Wrath of Khan that were recycled from TMP with new shots to make them different, especially making it so that the "leaving spacedock" portion actually shows the Enterprise leaving spacedock instead of the TMP drydock. If you want a real challenge, I'd love to see someone start redoing the exterior VFX shots in TOS episodes with the updated Enterprise from Strange New Worlds. But as others have said, if you want to continue using the movie-era model, I'd suggest doing the later Kirk-era movies like 5 and 6 which don't get done nearly as much.

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  2 роки тому +1

      Probably the most thoughtful response I've gotten so far! I totally agree. The more I look, the more I see other Khan fans redoing shots etc. So as much as I can be keen that mine would be 'different' or 'better', I think I could have a better time on something in a more dire situation. Undiscovered Country actually has some deadly vfx compared to other films from the era, so then my sights do keep getting drawn to Final Frontier.
      I was thinking about the TOS intro the other day, but the title sequence is so fast that wouldn't matter. I could potentially redo to the Strange New Worlds intro with the TOS enterprise but it would be a pain because it's done so well so mine would look like trash.
      I feel like I'd appreciate the challenge of doing the 'entirety' of something... So maybe I'd need to grab a full episode of TOS and use the Strange New Worlds Enterprise, or The Cage 🧐 and redo all of the vfx. Get someone to deepfake the actors for me

Oh, one little detail you might want to consider adding: Spock mentions static discharge as being a reason their sensors are so screwed up, while we see hints of it in the original VFX, it's kind of sparse. To so thoroughly cloud their sensors, seems like there should be a lot. Anyhow, great work!

      I felt terrible even TOUCHING the audio for this test! For the actual project, I wouldn't touch the audio track AT ALL. For this clip I used the soundtrack, used the correct sound for the ship rumbling past the camera BUT I admit that I couldn't find the correct torpedo sound. The one I used was actually a quantum torpedo fired by the E 😭 BUT when I played it back against the film for comparison, it was the closest I could find in a pinch without just sampling the film. But yeah, I don't want to touch the audio, don't want to adjust timing on edits (except for the first arrival at the Enterprise, just because I'm a fool and I had a 'cool idea' like everyone else). I'd like to do everything shot-for-shot, phaser for phaser.

      I feel like the biggest challenge is really to replicate the model, not create the ship. Often you'll see people trying to make 'modern' updates of things like this, but modern vfx is actually often accused of not feeling real, whereas modelwork still has an implied reality.
      "It was photographed with a camera, so it's real, it's just a different size" vs "this was made in a computer"
      A lot of what I do for VFX work is trying to tap into reality through those mental loopholes, so my plan with Trek stuff is to try and sell that it's still a model, just the lighting and camera got a little upgrade.

    I think it would be cool to see inside the windows, rather than the windows be a solid white light. It would help establish scale, so we know just how big this ship is (like a flying office building), and help the vessel feel more alive and organic, on top of already being a shiny, beautiful ship.

    The technical limitations of this time allowed for a more accurate fighting Style. In Star Trek battles are supposed to be like a submarine or naval fight. More strategical, more thoughts, less movement. In Jar Jar Abrahams Star Trek they inserted that bullshit speeding car style. That video has a beauty of a more high tech style and balances it with that naval battle feeling. I'd love to seen the whole battle with more higher graphics and that naval vibe.

    First of all: this is absolutely beautiful.
    However... tbh I like the fact that STII was made with models, it gives a nice late-70s/early-80s vibe. I don't want anything to be done to the movie 😛

      That's frankly the same way I feel. This is INCREDIBLE, and if a movie came out looking like this, it would be gorgeous. Still, classic Trek, using scale models, gave the ships a sort of physicality that CGI just couldn't quite match. Even if the CGI and lighting would actually make the ships look in space much more realistically, the truth is that something would be lost in translation. NOW....having said that....if you wanted to go back to STV: The Final Frontier, with its awful compositing and sub-par effects, I think physicality would be a small price to pay. Not that WOK doesn't have its own visual shortcomings, but, frankly, it's the kind of film that looks perfect just the way it is, flaws and all.

    Yes! Make it !!! Your model work is stellar and the lighting/rendering looks wonderful. I love the details of the 'cloudiness' of the Mutara Nebula. That was one thing that always bothered me with WOK. Why wasn't everyone looking out the windows? They were depending 100% on the scrambled tv signal, where the enterprise has windows all over it . And the nebula was crystal clear inside!! Your version has the nebula cloudy and opaque, thereby rendering the windows on the Enterprise a non-factor. Please make this version!!

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  Рік тому +1

      The moment when the Enterprise comes up behind the Reliant, but they're still blind, is a bit of a problem for me. If the noise on the monitors is caused by the nebula, their persistent blindness should be caused by the sensors being obscured. So when they pop up from behind, they should still be shedding cloud while they're prepping torpedos

    • @JerryScullion
      @JerryScullion Рік тому +1

      @@BrendanHenry Agreed. That bothered me too. Admittedly, I was wrapped up in the 'heroic' shot when the Enterprise comes up from behind (yay!) but, also, it was crystal clear otherwise. Brendan, I cannot stress enough, coming from someone who has a graphic background, but not in render/modeling, how absolutely refreshing your work is. Finally, the Mutara Nebula is depicted as it "should" have been Not sure if in 82' SFX crew was 'afraid' to 'hide' the ships in the murky clouds, or they didn't know how, but yours is what it "should have been. They only truly depicted the clouds when Reliant went into the dark murky cloud. Keep at it!!!

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry  Рік тому +1

      @@JerryScullion the majority of their cloud stuff was done in a salt water tank at high speeds, and all of the modelwork was done with motion control, minus that one shot with the smoke around the ship. So it really wasn't something they could try at that point in time I don't think
