This time was really the cultural zeitguist in the UK. Great number one Chris and i stlll love Slade to this day. The Sweet gave them a run for the money though.
Great choices again! Like you I love Glam Rock and it's what got me into music. The first single I ever owned was Ballroom Blitz by Sweet and my first albums were Sladest and Sweet's Biggest Hits. I still listen to this stuff today, especially when I'm working out or just need a pick me up. You mentioned Metal Guru as a song you didn't know the meaning of well I would add Can the Can by Suzi Quatro to that list. Incidentally this was actually her first #1 song ahead of Devil Gate Drive. I love Suzi and my favorite singles of hers would be 48 Crash, Daytona Demon and The Wild One. Slade or Sweet probably my favorite Glam Bands and I regularly listen to them both. Glad you mentioned The Glitter Band. For me 'The Tears I Cried' is an absolute classic and still gives me goosebumps when I play it. They also covered 'Tell Him', though the Hello version was better. Hello's first album, Keeps Us Off The Streets is excellent and contains that single along with New York Groove and the brilliant Star-Studded Sham. On the remastered CD version they included a cover of Mud's Dynamite which is pretty good. Roy Wood of Wizzard (& The Move & ELO) is also a hero of mine. See My Baby Jive would definitely be much higher up my list along with Angel Fingers. Some of his solo stuff is brilliant too. Someone below mentioned 'Dancing on a Saturday Night' and I would have to agree. Barry Blue had a few other good Glam singles too like Do You Wanna Dance, Hot Shot, School Love etc). Some Great Stuff back in the 70s for sure!😀

Another great collection of classic 45's. You just cannot better the shear joy of a 2-3 minute single. Yes, i loved the serious album bands. But as a teenager singles were all i could afford. California Man, was in fact the very first single i ever bought, 20p i think. Seeing Slade on Top of the Pops doing Coz i luv you, their first number one, at the age of 13, changed my life. I wanted to be Noddy Holder. Thanks for another really great list, keep them coming.
Great records again, also remember "January" by Pilot l had 3 singles by The Glitter Band which took a few years to overtake by others,There is a great version of Rock and Roll part 1 by The Time lords mixed with the Dr Who theme of course. Suzi Quatro still have her poster. Loved" Sound and Vision " by Bowie.All the memories coming back, remember The Arrows"Touch too Much" they had a tv series, dreadful! One of my favourite songs from that era "Hurt So Good" Susan Cadogan, reggae though.

Your knowledge of all types of music from glam ,punk 2tone to sync music is absolutely amazing, I love you top 20s/30s etc in all the different types of music, you have certainly made me remember songs that I'd forgotten and even opened my ears and eyes to others that I wouldn't have thought off.

Rex,I think their singles have aged really well, and still sound really cool. Did you ever see a woman coming out of New York City with a frog in her hand…. I was talking to my daughter about this video,she’s 29 and mad about music of all types. Anyway, take Queen Elton John and David Bowie away, they’re the only “superstars “ of that list and who from the glam era really stands up today, that was my question to her, remember the hadn’t seen the video. With only a very short think, Marc Bolan, she said. I was pretty amazed considering my previous comment.
It was the first music I listened to as a child , Slade, GG , Sparks , Sweet , i put a playlist together on Apple and it’s super . Funnily enough I have loads of Sweet on there (were they in your list? ) , there is no GG which I guess is childish / stupid . Thanks for the post super .

Hi Chris, been enjoying these single ranking videos - even when they're for genres I'm generally not keen on (Synth Pop, Disco). You must have quite an extensive and eclectic collection of singles. Glam rock produced some of the best singles ever - Rock On and This Town being two of the greatest (and oddest). Some acts I was never keen on... Alvin Stardust, Rubettes, Showaddywaddy, Mud, and surprisingly given my love of The Move, Wizzard. But loved others like T Rex, Slade, and in particular the wonderful Sweet. You really should have gone for Son of my Father - one of the best singles of the era. Can't really argue with the choice of All The Young Dudes, though I may have been tempted to put Roll Away The Stone in there. As For others, What about Blackfoot Sue and Standing In The Road? Eno with Seven Deadly Finns - maybe a bit too weird but the image at the time was definitely glam rock. And I think there's an argument for the Stones It's only Rock and Roll being glam adjacent. Another great list full of nostalgia Chris. This is full memories of first watching Top Of The Pops. In fact Devil Gate Drive was the first record I ever bought (I still have it and play it fairly regularly). An interesting (or not) factoid about the Alvin Stardust record. It was actually recorded by Magnet label boss Pete Shelley (him of Love Me, Love My Dog fame). He appeared on tv once as Alvin but didn't want to be the face of what turned out to be a surprise hit single. The label hired Shane Fenton who then became Alvin Stardust and recorded all the subsequent hits.
Chris wonderful wonderful wonderful I also have all but a couple of these! I won't argue about the choices or order but what a journey through the glam era! And you can see where punk came from with a lot of these bands influencing punk and new wave! Oddly Thin Lizzy whiskey in the jar before Phil and the boys went Rock and Status quo Caroline! But another great video chris!

Bassist on 'This town ain't big enough', Martin Gordon, (later of Radio Stars) was in a band called Jet. Their song 'Nothing to do with us' is a belter (though not a hit sadly). Keep these lists coming Chris, they're a great watch.

Great memories of owning a lot of these before they got stolen from a warehouse in Southampton while I was abroad working in the Middle East :-( Am I the only one who thinks of Blondie as being glam rather than “punk” or “new wave” as they are invariably described? I guess it’s the Chinnichap connection. The Glitter Band's "Rock and Roll Part Two" WAS the A-aside - or at least the version played everywhere. I completely disagree about Bolan/T.Rex and have never understood the "formula" criticism (unless it applies to the lyrics). There is a world of difference between "Ride A White Swan", "Metal Guru", "Children of The Revolution", "Teenage Dream" and "I Love To Boogie". Yes, I'm biased because they were the first band I became obsessed with. First band I saw live (twice!) and after more than 1000 gigs that first gig for which I had to travel to London from Southampton (twice - once to buy the ticket, the second time to see the gig) around the time "Solid Gold Easy Action" was a hit still stands out as the best gig I've ever been to. I used to loathe Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky" but loved Alvin Stardust's "My Coo Ca Choo", so I was outraged when friends took the piss saying it was a total rip-off of Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky". When I went back to check they were of course absolutely correct! I can listen to Greenbaum now without bristling but will never love it as much as the Stardust version. There must be some "special sauce" in the Stardust knock-off that made it appeal to me.

My Friend Stan was my first ever single followed up by Ballroom Blitz. Still have them and everything else by Slade and Sweet before I entered the punk era. Many aspects of Glam remain respected (Slade, & Sweet in particular). Chin Chap at the forefront for many bands (not Slade) with songs offered to many artists (Dynamite to Sweet before Mud apparently). Mud are still viewed with a healthy amount of respect which I think is justified (name me a better glam hit than Rocket) but others are rightly derided (Showaddywaddy)!!! ,

Slade had a couple of number ones before that including my fave Take Me Back 'ome. Still my favourite band of all time, they rocked. Loved that period Mud (who the Pistols took a lot from, you can hear Steve Jones guitar in a lot of their stuff) Wizzard, Sweet, Bowie, T. Rex just tremendous 🕺
Ah , glam, the soundtrack to my early/mid teens. So many genres about then. Fav Mott track was the cheesy Roll Away the Stone, T Rex has to be Get it on. CCS, although not a glam band had Walking, Tap Turns on the Water, and a version of Whole Lotta Love which was used for the TOTP theme tune at the rime.
Bit late in my comments but really enjoying your choices. Not much difference in our choices to be honest. I was a mega Slade fan in my early teens. The only one I sort of disagree with was the Steve Harley choice, I much preferred Judy Teen. I think that's because we hear come up and see me played all the time. Can't wait for the next batch. Maybe the mod revival in the late 70's. 😊
There was a few I quite liked to listen to... The Chords, The Merton Parkas, Secret Affair, The Lambrettas The Purple Hearts and of course The Jam, not sure they were really part of the mod revival though. I'm sure there were but can't think of many more off the top of my head. I think The Beat slightly morphed into that genre too.
Some great choices i would've gone for the sensational Alex Harvey band faith healer,mott the hoople all the way to Memphis, and David Bowie suffragette city and yes that pretty things silk torpedo is a fantastic album i found that album on CD in my local flea market a few years ago
"Mama" by Slade was their `Third` No 1, after "Coz I Luv You" and "Take Me Bak Ome" Suzi Quatro also had a No 1 with "Can The Can" Have you ever heard Hello`s second single "C`Mon" My view - Glam Supreme!!

Back in 72/73 it was actually termed `Glitter Rock` Some of my `Glam` faves (All in my own vinyl collection) are `Hector` "Wired Up" Hello "C`Mon" `Light Fantastic` "Take me, Shake Me" `Shambles` "Hello Baby" `Chunky` "Albatross Baby" `Daddy Maxwell` "Shake and Shout" `Muff` "Sexy, Sexy Lady" `Sisters` "Kick Your Boots Off" `Jook` "Bish, Bosh Bash" `Crunch` "Let`s Do It Again". I also prefer the `Wild Angels` version of "Clap Your Hands and Stamp Your Feet" I am from Wolverhampton so it was good to see the `Mighty` Slade as your No 1. My own favourite `Glam` single of theirs is their Second chart topper "Take Me Bak Ome".
I think "Walk on the Wild Side" / "Perfect Day" is 100% glam. Produced by Bowie, who played on it along with Mick Ronson when Bowie was still in Ziggy mode! Transformer is an incredible album!

First of all I did then and still do hate the Glam term, it’s too wide of a term having David Bowie, Lou Reed and Mott The Hoople linked to the Glitter Band and David Essex it’s like putting Bob Marley in the heavy metal section. There are some great 45’s you have shown John Congas had to great singles, I also would have picked The Sixteens for the Sweet choice such a well worked song, did you also know that Mott The Hoople turn downed David Bowie’s Drive In Saturday song David said he was so angry he shaved his eyebrows off ⚡️

Re Pilot: Guitarist Ian Bairnson also played on Kate Bush's first couple of albums. He plays the iconic guitar solo on Wuthering Heights.

Chin Chap at the forefront for many bands (not Slade) with songs offered to many artists (Dynamite to Sweet before Mud apparently). Mud are still viewed with a healthy amount of respect which I think is justified (name me a better glam hit than Rocket) but others are rightly derided (Showaddywaddy)!!! ,

I like Roxy to a point
Slade had a couple of number ones before that including my fave Take Me Back 'ome. Still my favourite band of all time, they rocked. Loved that period Mud (who the Pistols took a lot from, you can hear Steve Jones guitar in a lot of their stuff) Wizzard, Sweet, Bowie, T. Rex just tremendous 🕺

Ah , glam, the soundtrack to my early/mid teens. So many genres about then. Fav Mott track was the cheesy Roll Away the Stone, T Rex has to be Get it on. CCS, although not a glam band had Walking, Tap Turns on the Water, and a version of Whole Lotta Love which was used for the TOTP theme tune at the rime.

Bit late in my comments but really enjoying your choices. Not much difference in our choices to be honest. I was a mega Slade fan in my early teens. The only one I sort of disagree with was the Steve Harley choice, I much preferred Judy Teen. I think that's because we hear come up and see me played all the time. Can't wait for the next batch. Maybe the mod revival in the late 70's. 😊

Got a lot of memories from the mid 60's. My mother always had the radio on especially on a Sunday, while she was cooking dinner and doing the ironing.
What are your favourite mod revival 45s?
There was a few I quite liked to listen to... The Chords, The Merton Parkas, Secret Affair, The Lambrettas The Purple Hearts and of course The Jam, not sure they were really part of the mod revival though. I'm sure there were but can't think of many more off the top of my head. I think The Beat slightly morphed into that genre too.

Some great choices i would've gone for the sensational Alex Harvey band faith healer,mott the hoople all the way to Memphis, and David Bowie suffragette city and yes that pretty things silk torpedo is a fantastic album i found that album on CD in my local flea market a few years ago

"Mama" by Slade was their `Third` No 1, after "Coz I Luv You" and "Take Me Bak Ome" Suzi Quatro also had a No 1 with "Can The Can" Have you ever heard Hello`s second single "C`Mon" My view - Glam Supreme!!

Back in 72/73 it was actually termed `Glitter Rock` Some of my `Glam` faves (All in my own vinyl collection) are `Hector` "Wired Up" Hello "C`Mon" `Light Fantastic` "Take me, Shake Me" `Shambles` "Hello Baby" `Chunky` "Albatross Baby" `Daddy Maxwell` "Shake and Shout" `Muff` "Sexy, Sexy Lady" `Sisters` "Kick Your Boots Off" `Jook` "Bish, Bosh Bash" `Crunch` "Let`s Do It Again". I also prefer the `Wild Angels` version of "Clap Your Hands and Stamp Your Feet" I am from Wolverhampton so it was good to see the `Mighty` Slade as your No 1. My own favourite `Glam` single of theirs is their Second chart topper "Take Me Bak Ome".

I think "Walk on the Wild Side" / "Perfect Day" is 100% glam. Produced by Bowie, who played on it along with Mick Ronson when Bowie was still in Ziggy mode! Transformer is an incredible album!

First of all I did then and still do hate the Glam term, it’s too wide of a term having David Bowie, Lou Reed and Mott The Hoople linked to the Glitter Band and David Essex it’s like putting Bob Marley in the heavy metal section.
There are some great 45’s you have shown John Congas had to great singles, I also would have picked The Sixteens for the Sweet choice such a well worked song, did you also know that Mott The Hoople turn downed David Bowie’s Drive In Saturday song David said he was so angry he shaved his eyebrows off ⚡️

@@TheVinylOrchard sorry Chris definitely not a dig at you it’s a very common use of the term glam, it’s great seeing all those 45’s being a CD collector now I remember buying some of them, 45p around that time, Alice Cooper’s Schools Out I vividly remember because I left school when that was around and David’s Starman was a big thing for me the start of my Bowie obsession.👨🏻🎤⚡️
