- 50 reasons why 1980 may just be the best year ever for classic rock, hard rock, and heavy metal.
Let me know your thoughts and if there is a better year!
Apologies. The Styx LP is Paradise Theatre not Best of Times. That’s a song on it.
Excellent collection maiden number one for me.
Great album. Possibly their best tbh

What a year indeed Chris. I have most of those albums and singles in my collection as well. Not sure it was 1980 but I remember travelling with my girlfriend (now wife) from a camping holiday in Porthcawl to see Def Leppard at the Colston Hall. As a Welsh band I saw Budgie live many times and their first guitarist Tony Bourge once lived a few miles up the road from me. I was also once mistaken for their latter day drummer who shares the same name as me. Keep this nostalgia coming!
Saw budgie at Reading Festival. Would have loved to have seen them much earlier in their career though. Thanks for your support my friend
Great selection Chris! I never realised all this lot came out in 1980!
Local bands to me Quartz and Jameson raid were regulars who I used to go and see! Love them all Chris! You have more thoughtful choices than me! 👍
Thank you so much for watching again Ian . It is so appreciated
What a fantastic video Chris , 1980 was great especially for nwobhm ! . I agree with you regarding the 70's , it was fantastic , i grew up on a musical diet of Rolling Stones , Led Zeppelin , Black
Sabbath , Deep Purple , Pink Floyd , Genesis and later on punkrock . Thanks and best regards from Belgium
Thank you so much for watching and commenting Jan. cheers, Chris
Wow a bit of a bold statement Chris as for me 1970 to 1974-5 was when the first generation of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal bands were at their best....
Not totally convinced but it was a brilliant year
bloody brilliant choices there bro heaven and hell is my fav too
What a song!
Fantastic year for music and yes definitely hard rock and metal my top picks in that category are Gillan glory road, budgie power supply, hawkwind levitation, iron maiden self titled, Michael Schenker group self titled and UFO no place to run again this is a solid year so many landmark albums to pick from
Fabulous year wasn’t it!
@@TheVinylOrchard yes it was
Being more of a punk than a rocker, I was quite surprised to see so many rock bands in the 80. From 1978 til about 2000 everything is just a blur to me. First time getting drunk in 78 and finally sobered up in 2000. Really interesting choices though.
Thanks for watching again Steven
I first heard The Zoo on Tommy Vance's Friday night show in around 1988. It was the live version from World Wide Live, an album I've been looking for ever since!
Don’t see that album very often at all
Absolutely correct, it was the best year ever, i absolutely loved it, knodding my head to so many of the bands you saw that year because i did as well, i really thought that when you got to the Whitesnake album/tour you would remember that's where you saw G-Force.... 16 years old and spent all my wages on records and gigs. What a year, thanks for bringing so many memories back me ode... (didn't see rory in '80 but i met him at loughborough uni in Nov '81, strangely enough they sold the same tour program that you have).
Whitesnake tour. That was it. And Reading I think
@@TheVinylOrchard I think they were down to play on the Sunday but can't remember them playing, ozzy was supposed to have played as well.
It was definitely a great year for rock, I was 16 at the time and just starting to go to gigs and saw many of the bands mentioned at either Sheffield City Hall or Leeds Queens Hall during the early 80s. I also thought Maiden's first two albums were the best and loved Sabbath with Dio fronting the band. What an album Heaven and Hell was and I thought Mob Rules was even better, also got to see them on that tour. Great times.
A great era I reckon
love early maiden
I was at the 1980 Reading Rock festival, too. And in '81, '82 and '83. I love Styx, but "Paradise Theater" is the album I like least. I much prefer what they did between 1974 and 1979, from "Man Of Miracles" til "Cornerstone". But hey, that's me. Greetings from Belgium. Cheerio.
@@JimmyRJump love earlier Styx too. Grand illusion is magnificent
Hi Chris love the videos please keep doing them some obscure stuff here not really my thing heavy rock though
Thank you for your support Steve. It’s so appreciated
I was there with you my friend at Southampton for the Triumph, AC/DC and Rush concerts! 😀 'Appy Days indeed.
Triumph was disappointing though because of Rik Emmett's illness but at least they were able to complete about an hour if I remember correctly.
I also remember seeing Motorhead and Girlschool on the same bill at Poole Arts Centre. That was probably the same year? You must have gone to that too, right?
I still think the Reckless album is a masterpiece. Totally agree about the cover though, what were they thinking? Obviously, we weren't the only ones who hated it because on the Rock Candy remaster they changed it to show the band in a cage. I remember you and I reading the 5 Star review for the album in Sounds where they described the opening guitar riff on 'Searching for a Dream' as 'sounding like a highly tuned squadron of star fighters'. I'm guessing you've still got that paper clipping somewhere !😀. I'm loving these videos. Cheers Chris & keep up the good work !!
Remember those gigs well Gary. Think triumph played less than an hour tbf. Saw Motorhead in Poole a couple of times. Girlschool, also supported Uriah Heep there. I need to go back that Reckless Lp. Been a while. I have that sounds review stuck in the inner sleeve of that album !
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch these. I enjoy doing them and its comments like this that help. Cheers my friend, Chris
@@TheVinylOrchard 😃I just KNEW you'd still have that Sounds review!! 1980 was a great year for sure but I'm looking forward to you doing 1981 because I have it in my mind that that was an even better year!
@@GaryWoodfield have t thought about 81. But it was good for sure!
You forgot the best album of 1980. Judas Priest "British Steel"
I prefer the three previous LPs but I did include Rapid Fire
