- At 16 months old, Avery was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect - a hole in the wall between the heart's upper chambers that required open-heart surgery to repair. Shock, fear and pride were just a few of the emotions Jessica and Andrew experienced throughout their daughter Avery’s journey with a congenital heart defect (CHD).

This Journal is a collection of stories, videos, and personal experiences from patients and families about what it’s like to have a pediatric heart condition. It represents the “collective wisdom” of 30 families and many health care providers from the Boston Children’s Hospital Heart Center.
Originally created in 2000, this Journal was updated in 2017. This project was created by the Boston Children’s Hospital Department of Psychiatry and Heart Center.
All contributions were reviewed for safety and appropriateness by a group of Heart Center parents and health care providers.
