Ahuizotl when other guardian creatures are watching: "Oh not, I've got to protect these artifacts!"
Ahuizotl as soon as the other guardian creatures are out of the room: "Time to murder everyone and conquer the world!"
Part of me wants to be so uncharitable as to say that the reason they decided to retcon a redemption onto him is just because he has a Hispanic accent and they don't want to be "problematic" to one of their "ethnic" characters.

    Wow! Thank you!
I don't see eye-to-eye with Thespio all the time, especially on his lack of appreciation for best pony (i.e. Rainbow Dash) but yeah, I am 100% on board with everything you both said here.
Even more than any lazy retcons, it's the moral that infuriates me. There's a line from a Star Wars novel that stuck with me, even after years and years from when I first read it:
"It's called the gray fallacy. One person says white, another says black, and outside observers assume gray is the truth. The assumption of gray is sloppy, lazy thinking. The fact that one person takes a position that is diametrically opposed to the truth does not then skew reality so the truth is no longer the truth, The truth is still the truth."
-Michael Stackpole, Star Wars: X-Wing: Isard's Revenge
Granted, maybe its a bit Randian, but regardless, it has a good point. I was horrified because Fluttershy was letting herself get suckered in by Caballeron pointing out an irrelevant detail (the color of a flower!) in Daring Do's account in order to get Fluttershy to question the veracity of the account as a whole and to elevate the value of Caballeron's lying screed. That's how conspiracy theorists (anti-Vaxxers, 9/11 Truthers, Holocaust Deniers, etc.) operate. It's also just a terrible moral to suggest that the way to make horrible people turn good is to defend and enable their horrible behavior, because validating them isn't going to make them want to change! She is giving them exactly what they want!
I wasn't a huge fan of "Keep Calm and Flutter On," thinking Fluttershy was a bit cynical and manipulative to tell Discord she trusted him and defend him from the others' accusations when she knew, 100% that Discord was guilty and his denials were false. I did not really like that. But to go from that to here ... we had Fluttershy in "Keep Calm..." express her indignation that her friends thought her that silly and gullible. But here, I guess it shows why they were right to think that since she apparently IS that silly and gullible.
Hell, even after the reveal that Caballeron was lying (shock!), Fluttershy didn't even get a chance to express being hurt or upset that she'd been utterly tricked. Even in the context of the stupid idea of redeeming Caballeron, it was ridiculous that they already had it happen BEFORE the reveal, utterly neutering the impact of said reveal. People SHOULD be careful about how far they're willing to trust others, especially those with a deservedly awful reputation. But as is? There are no negative repercussions. If they lie, then they lie. Oh well.

I'm with Thespio on the Cozy Glow thing. I'd also like to know why she at such a young age, is a power hungry villain.
Also, I have a theory on the Auizotal continuity error. Picture this, suppose that after his plot to cause a drought (which would destroy the jungle) more superior spirits punished him by making him just a guardian of the jungle.

This was one of the funniest things I've watched in a while. Watching Thespio screaming about it was hilarious. I do agree with the continuity hiccups and even Fluttershy's gullibility, but I just don't hate the episode as much as you do. It's still not all that great, though. Pretty disappointing for the final Daring Do episode, really.

I'm with both of you Voice and Thespio, "Daring Doubt" was a total let down in my opinion, in fact i'd go as far as to say that this episode was an insulting way to end the shows Daring Do story arc, especially with what they did with Ahuizotl, i mean as we all know ever since he was first introduced in the series everything he's done has made him out to be a bad guy, and then this episode comes along making his character go from being a perfectly understood bad guy to a misunderstood good guy?...if that's not lazy and or lousy writing for a character, then i don't know what is....that's my opinion and i'm sticking too it.

Seriously, this is like the [now] common case of downplaying heroes and attempting to add a victim-like point of view towards villains, as though said villains are blameless for the actions they are clearly doing and are not taking responsibility for said actions. Firebrand posted a video essay concerning this writing style and mindset. Believe me, continuity problems isn’t the only thing that’s KOed in the crossfires. DX

So would you say that Caballeron and Ahuizotl's reformation in this episode makes Garble's reformation in Sweet and Smoky look like Sunset Shimmer's reformation in Rainbow Rocks?

  • @MLP-Trinary
    @MLP-Trinary 4 роки тому +7

What also grates is that for a dual-character piece with conflicting viewpoints, we get no real acknowledgement that Rainbow Dash had a valid point and was, in fact, correct.
If (and that's a big if) they wanted to do this basic story, here's where I would've changed things up. First off, eliminate the stuff about A.K. Yearling's connection with Daring Do coming out. It never went anywhere and was pointless. The rest of the episode can more-or-less continue as is up to the reveal when Caballeron has the talisman. Only here, LET FLUTTERSHY GET UPSET.
Have her be shocked and appalled that he lied to her, manipulated her and took her good will and stomped on it. Have her fire off question after question about the claims in his book and have Caballeron admit they were all innuendos, half-truths or bald-faced lies. Dejected, Fluttershy turns back to Rainbow Dash and admits that she was right all along and about how wasted her kindness was. Then the stone-gargoyles attack and the group runs. And maybe one of the henchponies helps Fluttershy by shoving her forward to safety, even taking the hit for her.
Then during the sheltering in the cave bit, while Fluttershy is still upset, have the henchponies go over to Fluttershy and apologize for everything, showing real remorse. Then even when Fluttershy still feels down since Caballeron is still an unrelenting jackass, have Rainbow Dash point out that maybe Fluttershy had a point too. While Daring Do's accounts and reality have both shown that Caballeron is a jerk, Daring never really explored what made the henchponies tick or if they were as bad as Caballeron. Have Dash point out that Fluttershy's kindness was wasted on Caballeron, but it did have an impact on his henchponies. Seeing and hearing this, Fluttershy is buoyed and gets her confidence back.
Then she heads out and uses her kindness to connect with the gargoyle creatures and have them let them out: show both Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy being right about one of the principal baddies; Rainbow being right about Caballeron and Fluttershy being right in regards to the henchponies or gargoyles. Heck, (I admit to being a bit controversial here) I would have be okay, under THESE circumstances, with some (hopefully less dumb) version of Ahuizotl being redeemed. Yeah, it would've been as abrupt and out-of-left field as Garble's was in "Sweet and Smoky" but I can forgive a retcon if its as part of a good moral or a good character piece. Let Rainbow Dash be right about distrusting Caballeron and let Fluttershy be validated with Ahuizotl. Show that listening to the other side shouldn't make you an unquestioning defender of a false narrative, but a critical observer.
The retcons in the actual episode are egregious because it's clear that Fluttershy lacked any hoof to stand on and so they had to re-write reality in order to validate her stupidity. Because the writers are under the illusion that the way to show the strength of kindness is to show Fluttershy being kind as in and of itself an insta-win: she shows kindness and she gets what she wants, no additional effort required. That's a huge mistake. Be kind, yes, but show the pitfalls that go with it, show the hard work that is required to build off what kindness can lay the foundation for. Don't rewrite things to validate blind, naive trust in clearly bad people, or else you end up merely helping them along.

This was one of the episodes of S9 that I missed out on, but after catching up. HOLY HFIL was this something to watch.
I know the message is to get both sides of the story to you can make a call on what is "true"
but this episode drops the ball. Especially when we HAD AN EPISODE EARLIER THAT DID THIS.
Anyone remember the episode where Rarity, Applejack, and Pinkie Pie all went on a boat trip, and we had to have a Rashomon style of storytelling to get to the truth?
THAT WAS WHAT THIS EPISODE SHOULD HAVE BEEN
all 3 sides had a different perspective and Twilight had to get ALL 3 sides of the story to find out the truth, sure the mystery was a dud, but that episode better handled and used the "you have to get both sides" moral sooooo much better without ruining any of the characters or pre-established stories

Harry Plinkett reference aside, i wanted to like this episode, since i can get behind the moral. But the discontinuity of previous episodes was the true deal breaker for me. Now i'm sincerely hoping the IDW comics give her a better send off, i don't care that it isn't canon, the episode was so frustrating to watch that i'm now begging to see a proper conclusion for the character on the comics.

  • @captainseg

The jokes in this episode was, in my opinion, pretty good. But when it comes to the writing and massive continuity errors here that leads back to previous seasons... this can be seen as "ignoring the previous episodes" in order to enjoy this one. But even then, just by ignoring previous episodes will still not hold up to this one from questions such as "How did Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash met Daring Do or know where secret identity?".
At the end of the day, I can only let this episode slide for being somewhat entertaining but it's not recommended for others to watch. At least the rest of the episodes that are coming up are from good to a satisfying conclusion. (At least that's from what I heard when the episodes were leaked.)

That being said...her role in Scare Master was HORRID! Not only does she act like a coward at virtually the most harmless things during Nightmare Night (such as fake vampire fangs, eating candy and dressing up.) Her hiding out under her bed every year on that holiday makes all the brave things she did and continues to do...seem non-existent. I mean...I'm proud she got over her fear of dragons and actually went into the Dragon Lands, a BIG improvement from the Migration episode.
But really, her not liking Nightmare Night because her friends get scared is just stupid. If only we could've had an episode where Discord helped her come out of her shell on that night. Knowing HIM, the holiday would be like his Second Hearth's Warming/Second Christmas

When I first heard about this episode, I was pretty iffy about it, but after seeing the reviews MisAntro Pony and you guys did, I'm completely convinced that this episode is complete, utter garbage. What really drove me to realize this episode would be bad is that they redeemed Ahuizotl, despite his previous appearances clearly showing that he's evil.
I also want to bring up that this episode was written by Nicole Dubuc, who was also the writer for "A Matter of Principals" and "The Last Crusade" (which I hate). Add this episode to her line of stinkers.

Geez, you officially transformed into the Angry My Little Pony Nerd (or Equestria Critic; take your pick) in this one, Thespio. I'm surprised there wasn't a Technical Difficulties screen from all the rage and hatred you displayed. In fact, you probably should've invented a rating lower than a hooves down after watching this episode, because it freaking broke you. The last time I heard a brony get that angry at anything related to Friendship is Magic, they quit the show. XD
When it comes to Ahuizotl's reveal as a misunderstood good guy and his redemption, yeah, it makes no sense when you remember the extreme measure he went to "protect the jungle". The example of his past villainy from Read It and Weep was presented as what Rainbow Dash imagined was happening while reading the book, but the example from Daring Don't wasn't told from any specific point of view; it was an actual event actually happening within the show's world, so there couldn't be any idealizing or demonizing. What we saw was what we got. Also, if Ahuizotl is supposed to be a guardian of the jungle's relics, and if he'll wind up in trouble with these other guardians if he doesn't do his job well enough, I must ask. Wouldn't they get equally ticked off at him for doing his job TOO well? Losing the relics to a persistent treasure hunter is one thing, but what about possibly setting the jungle on fire and killing everything that inhabits it just to keep her away from them? How can this be defended?
And Thespio, I can understand you wanting Cozy Glow to get a backstory, while at the same time wanting no such thing from Caballeron. It's because of the difference in importance that they are presented with. Caballeron is a d-list villain, intentionally created to be a one-dimensional villain archetype from a series within a series. For quite a while, nobody realized he actually existed. Cozy Glow was made to be a big deal. She's a crafty child prodigy who displayed a level of charisma unlike any of the other School of Friendship students, and knew how to put all the pieces into place to get what she wanted. All that combined with her twisted view on the concept of friendship and how she wished to benefit from it has built intrigue around her. It really makes one wonder on how this little girl got corrupted so badly. While Cozy Glow has been entertaining in her post-School Raze appearances, unless she's just a demon from the fiery pits of Hell, a little background on what made her who she is wouldn't hurt.
Lastly, dang it! Another pony actually doing something incompetently, instead of PRETENDING they're doing something incompetently to MANIPULATE somebody. First Sunburst in A Trivial Pursuit, and now Fluttershy in THIS episode. That sweetheart has risen so high on my Mane 6 fondness metre since the show's early years, and Nicole Dubuc goes and makes her dense for the plot's convenience. I demand smart and manipulative heroes!
By the way, tell me something, Voice and Thespio. You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Cozy Glow maybe an "incomplete character", but she has more personality than the main antagonist of Daring Doubt (I cannot remember his name and I do not care what his name is. He is boring). Cozy is fun to watch when she is paired with Tirek and Chrsyliss. And unlike Zotl, they are not "redeemed".

That is not always true for example i watch your videos because you guys are very interesting with your reviews i enjoy listening to your viewpoints as it helps me judge things in different ways. i find you guys genuinely funny and informative. But I Don't watch your videos to see yourself torture yourselves but to hear your opinions and learn to understand your point of view. But that "Dance monkey Dance" bit you guys did made me feel like you hated your fanbase not the episode. Now, are there some who will try to say that you are stupid for having the opinion that you have? Yes. However, they'd be in the wrong for doing so. It is one thing to say "I disagree with *your opinion* ; this episode makes retcons that are inexcusable for a final season episode." It is another thing to say, " *You* are stupid for liking this episode." And I reiterate: Voice and Thespio are not personally attacking fans that somehow like this episode. They're doing what they have always been doing since the beginning of this review series: giving their opinions on the episode, and stating their reasons behind their opinions.

But we expect a review, so here they are. They are basically saying that they, like trained monkeys, are here for our enjoyment. Could they have stated their point better? Perhaps. Nonetheless, let's not take that line out of context
"Also what did Mitchell meant?" He did exactly what I'm warning you not to do: he took the line too seriously. He took it to mean that we fans ONLY watch their content to see them torture themselves with the bad episodes--which we don't.
"Also is it okay for my boyfriend to like Voice?" Let me ask you this: Why are you asking random strangers on the Internet what your boyfriend should and should not like? If you don't like Voice but he does, the most important question is *why*? Why don't you like Voice? Why does he? Try to come to an understanding. I can't argue with all the stuff you said about Ahuizotl, that was all totally justified. But you may be being too harsh on Fluttershy. Did it occur to you that she may have had a full understanding of who Caballeron was from the start? This is the pony who redeemed Discord. Maybe Fluttershy intentionally set out to redeem Caballeron and was just playing dumb in order to give him the chance to be the better pony? And the end where Caballeron wrote a book with Daring Do... That works just fine. After all, he's always been in it for the money, and being a best selling novelist brings in some serious profit, with the benefit of not having to dodge deathtraps. It does require that Daring Do bury the hatchet, but that's not outside the realm of possibility.

I agree redeeming Caballeron was beyond stupid and made absolutely no sense.
And yeah, I still question the whole idea of Ahuizotl being a good guy just trying to protect the artifacts thing.
Did the writers forget the whole thing in Daring Don't where he was fully ready to subject the area around the temple to 800 years of sweltering heat? You can't just go and say he was doing that for a good reason. The type of sweltering heat he was talking about would kill everything around the temple, turning it into a desert wasteland.
That's hardly PROTECTING the Jungle. That's outright eradicating it.
Unless he meant a *different* kind of heat, in which case... yeah, that's still kinda messed up, even if it were likely because of an animal or tribal ponies population decline.
Though it is still FAR more believable than Caballeron's redemption.
As for his line about making the world suffer his wrath in The Sapphire Stone, we should remember that was in the book already, not Dash actually experiencing it, so there is a chance Daring never actually heard him say anything like that and merely assumed he was saying something along those lines so that's what she wrote in the book.
She has made a few errors in her books, after all.
And as for those other "Guardian Creatures he talks about, the only creatures that come to mind are that Alligator thing from Stranger Than Fanfiction and the Sphinx from Daring Done?.
