What a nice video. I watched it last night on the big telly. Really interesting to see your work on these larches and hear your thoughts on the process. As I'm sure you can imagine, I'd be getting some wire onto them straight away, but that's the beauty of bonsai. There are multiple approaches to it.
The issue is often the stability with so few roots and I found that when i last did this (20 years ago) I was able to apply wire quite easily a year later. I think this time I wanted to appeal to the starter who really doesnt want to use wire yet. Cheers for spoiiling me on the big screen :)
That's a great point about appealing to the starter who perhaps doesn't have any wire. I have an idea for a bonsai challenge in the spring that I think will really appeal to you.
I just did mine today, they came from beechwood trees on eBay. I've just got them outside. I guess I should move them to the shed if it gets below freezing. Mine were in great shape, lots of buds all over them.
That's brilliant. If we have sustained sub sero then consider that but otherwise they should be okay in a sheltered part of the garden. Make sure to send me some pictures or even a little video clip of what you have done now...and maybe again when they start to bud out. Cheers, Xav
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat I have the photos of my sticks and the mess I made of a couple of Picea. When I see a way of sending or posting I will do. I'm proud of my sticks lol
You're smashing this bonsai basics series mate! I love the idea of using an "in tray" from work 🤣 very creative and should provide some lovely radial roots.
Xavier another great bonsai basics video! Your tap to emphasize sets the point in my head. Where did you order your larch from? Great explanation on root choice and how to start your radial pattern. Can't wait for the artistic video you spoke about!
We are lucky in the UK that a number of commercial nurseries sell a wide range of dry root sapling stock. It was Beechfields nursery if that is of any help to you. The project will take some time but the video work is already started. :)
Good video mate. I bought 20 myself last year I just put them in the ground for a year. Apart from my boat bonsai pot that was a Japanese larch, good vid mate
Sound slike a plan to me. I did exactly the same and then after 3 years I pulled up half of them and started styling them. tne other five were pulled up 2 years later. Its all about planning for the future.
If everyone had a larch in their in-tray, the world would be a much better place! 🐦💙
What can I say Jay? Any in-tray that just has a tree to play with has got to be a bonus :)
I Love Larch Bonsai . Nice Video !
My fist ever tree and still a favourite. It is so versatile and produces three flushes of growth a year. What's not to love :)
@@XaviersBonsaiRetreat you are so Right! 👍
I have never seen a larch I don't like. Great vid as usual Xav.🙂👍
Cheers Magnus. I have seen a lot of larches I dislike - there the ones that die on me :)
Bonsai phill very good video thanks xavier keep it up mate thanks
Cheers as always Phil - the next video in this series is 'collecting' for the first time'...
I love the benches..... Thanks for sharing.
It is my pleasure - I just wish the rain wouldnt keep rotting the wood! Next year I have to replace all the slats - £££

Love ideas like this.looking forward to seeing further videos of this. Great job
Thanks, they are growing nicely so will look at them next spring 😁
I think I was able to make a good start as a larch seedling and a bonsai. 🎉🤗👍
Its not a black pine but you can still wire and bend them a lot :)
Great video Xav. It’s all about following the process. 👍
Process? Are you suggesting that I have a method :)
Great Video Xav. Very interesting bonsai basics which most people forget about😀👍
Cheers Ryan - your English seems to be improving :)

Excellent video, they will be very good bonsai in the future. Congratulations !!! 👏👏👏👏 I loved the video 💚✂️🌿
Hopefully this will encourage new bonsaiists to follow along and we can compare our trees as they progress each year. Thanks for watching, Xav
For 3 years old larch it costs probably 15 dollars a each not including shipping.. the UK and wherever you are bare rooted plants are so cheap
Yeah - I do feel quite lucky in comparison to other countries. Thanks for watching Marcus.
Thanks Xavier for sharing. I love your approach. Nevertheless due to some space issues my Japanese Larch has to stay single. 😅 Warm regards 🙋♀️
Nothing wrong with being single - staring out over a balcony in joy of living :)
