Here’s another on-location video for you. This time I’m traveling far into the field, deep into the wilderness. It’s an expedition so grand that it would make Sir Ernest Shackleton himself quiver in his boots.
Nah, I’m just going to Anaheim.
You may know Anaheim as the home to Disneyland and the Mighty Ducks, but I know it as a place with a cool-looking tire shop where I made a UA-cam video about taking pictures with my 6x17 camera. And hey here comes a spoiler alert. Seriously, don’t read any further if you want your surprises un-spoiled in this video. Are you ready? Okay here goes. I shot it on CineStill 800T film. teehee I know! So exciting! Before this outing, I’d never shot CineStill before. It was an experience. A learning experience, no doubt. But I am happy with the results. It’s a fun film to use.
Now I of course shot it on Kodak Portra 400, too. I’m comfortable with that film and I didn’t want to blow this shoot trying something new - especially on a film that costs fourteen bucks a roll. Portra was kind of my failsafe here. So on top of watching me descend into madness trying to make this composition happen, you’ll also get to see these 2 films compared. So you know, a fun time was had by all!
The camera you see me using in this video is a Shen Hao TFC 617-A with a Rodenstock 115mm lens. I use this combo A LOT for my “architectural” work. And I put “architectural” in quotes because I don’t really consider these types of photos architectural. They’re more like my slow, tripod-based attempt at street photography. Okay I know it’s not “street” photography as we all know it, but I guess I consider it some sort of hybrid between architectural, landscape, and street photography. I need to come up with a name for it.
Anyway, thanks for watching!

“I’m not sure this film works on anything other than gas stations at night.” These on location videos are so entertaining!
3 minutes in and I’m already taking notes. Toothpick… brilliant.
Make sure you get them Toothpicks from Peak Design 🧐
Brae Hunziker
The tires in front of the garage door really add to the scene.
But i'd have laid the front one on it's side.........
Another well made, entertaining video. A Great image too. I love the persistence and foresight in your photography, something I wish I had more of 👍👍
I read this comment with your voice in mind, Thomas LOL :)
I loved that cinestill photo. Cant wait to see more.
It all starts with a toothpick Thomas :-)
Definitely a relaxing content as well.
Loved this one, man. ❤️
Thank you, my man. Means a lot coming from you.
A @Matt Day and @Nick Carver video on the same day? And about Large Format ? Wearing hats? More proof that they are the same person. :)
@@nickcarverphoto Hiya, Nick, a question from someone not familiar with filming for movies. You mentioned that reciprocity is not encountered in a movie camera. Is that simply because they run 24 frames a second through them and thus there is no prolonged exposure time? Have you considered, if you want to block a streetlight out, making a blind that can hook over those thumb screws on your camera so you don't have to tie up a hand holding it? Also, it'll reduce the chance you might shake the camera during a timed exposure. You were concerned that the piece of plastic blinding the streetlight might show up in the photo. If you had it mounted rather than hand held you could look through the view finder to verify it isn't. Just a thought.
@@nickcarverphoto Great photo, and those two tires standing on their treads by the bay door farthest from the street add that little something that makes it even more interesting.
So I was getting new tires the other day, and there's this road worker in the median making survey measurements. The weird thing is that there was no guy with the stick to be found. I thought the guy was up to no good. I got closer but then it was clear that he had a toothpick in his mouth. I immediately retreated.
“Not sure this film works on anything other than gas stations at night…” that statement alone was worth the price of admission!!! Lol!
The cut to you with your head on the steering wheel is what true photographers look like many more times than I like to admit...Job well done getting the shot!
“I’m not actually sure this film works on anything other than gas stations at night...” Well played, sir, well played.
Dude, you’re one of my favorite photographers to follow. Even when nothing seems to be going your way in the videos, it’s inspiring to watch you find ways to make it work. Thank you
I like the way the CineStill give a bit of a slight sickly green tint to the fluro lights rather than the warm cast the Portra gives. The shot feels more sunlit with the Portra whereas the Cinestill is more "hey, look at this shop, it's not natural!" and I love that juxtaposition.
And we loved just the trace of red from the halation... It couldn't make up for the neon signs being off, but it still managed to add that nice bit of red.
I expect fluorescent lights to look kind of green in a picture. What I grew up with.
Why are all his videos so dang entertaining?
Another Nick Carver Video...Its like opening a present at Christmas...not sure what you will get, but you know it will be just what you'll love.
I love your videos that make me realise that I'm not the only one who screws up, like wrong place, wrong time, wrong gear, and then forget to rotate the frikkin' rotating back! :)
Great idea! I'm gettin' a box of tooth picks! No one messes with a toothpick chewer.
Another classic. I can see the toothpick making a regular appearance in more videos. Keep up the great work Nick.
I love the two tires on the ground.
Your explanation of why you take photos like this one was perfect. Great job!
I like the failure parts. Most youtubers just post the successful situation. Seeing you fail, while comical, is actually informative. I drove by a place 2x a week for a year before I made the image. Granted it was on my way to work and I only work 2 days a week, but still.
That one tire just hanging out in front of the garage really makes the image.
those were some strong "SIR!"' 's .. very assertive.. i'm going to have to get me some tooth picks...
The standing tires are the heroes for me
I know the frustration...I once went to a location (sunrise over an ocean pool with glassy water in the pool. Always had some crazy person swimming laps in the middle of winter. I went 10 times to get that particular shot. The 10th time I was just expecting the same as the other times,....BUT, this time there was no one there, the conditions were perfect, I was so excited to finally get the shot. Patience and persistence is often a requirement.
Yay another video, your youtuber merch should be the high vis vest 😂
Nick Carver on Location!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!!!
Why are videos of a dude taking pictures of mundane buildings so damn cool and so damn interesting? Must be the photographer.
You know Nick is a true professional. Stays in character for the final shoot..... the toothpick!
It's the trees that make this great. We live in the desert and there are trees! :)
That rehearsal of lines in the car: "SIR!" :-D Nice vid, nice pic. Thanks!
I really like the cinestill one! The deep blue sky is haunting
Look at that… Nick Carver has another filmolicious video out. Awesome!
"Leaks Light Diagnosis 50 years". Man what a sign! I just chuckle all the way through your vids and love what you do. Great result, like the eerie mood of the cinestill and think the cooler tones suit the scene more. STill love Portra 400 though :)
Best one since the laundromat, which is maybe my favourite photography video on YT. I hope the cine version will grow on you, it has a lot of character.
This is my favourite photography youtube channel by a country mile. Nick is calm and collected opposed to how most hosts are screaming in your face and paranoid you have the attention span of a mosquito.
The fact that Nick also shows the whole process - the skill, knowledge, technical expertise and patience you need to make great art - is a gift.
Thanks for sharing this with us Nick. You're a true master!
These videos can always help me destress. Everything about these location videos is so serene to me, I'll come back to them several times if I need to wind down after a rough day. Maybe it's the pacing, no over the top and unnecessary high-energy edits, just slow and serene like the pics. Thanks Nick!
A Photo Archaeologist from the Future...now that's what I want to be when I grow up
Fantastic,real photography, analog forever!
Alright, cinestill and a toothpick. Got it. Thank you Nick I love these.
Wonderful example of why we put effort into our images. Personally I like the Cinestill version a wee bit more. But it's more about the process than the result, which is the reason we shoot film. Andy
Great commentary on this one. I enjoyed hanging out with 4am Nick. Juuuuuuuuust a little more manic than you usually present yourself ;-) I think I prefer the Portra image in this one - for what it's worth.
I pass by an old Firestone garage almost 3 times a week. I can confirm, that those neon signs at dusk are glorious ! And, there is a railway across from that location. I might snap a picture or two soon.
First of all I love these videos. I GREATLY appreciate that you show the frustrations of shooting on location.
As for Cinestill vs Portra. That's a tough one. The Cinestill looks more lonesome and desolate with the cooler tones. The portrait evokes a place that while not exactly welcoming at least wasn't abandoned by people, if that makes sense.
The most entertaining photography video i've watched to be honest.
You ditched the toothpick too early! 🤣 Great video! Your persistence is an inspiration.
You need an online merch store that includes items such as reflective vests and toothpicks 😁. Great video.
Great video, Nick. I died laughing at the Cinestill gas station joke.
You mentioned that you don't film a lot of on location because sometimes it is a lot of failing before you get the shot. I actually love seeing that persistence in your videos. Social media has a way of distorting people's view of reality and you see all these great images and when I go out the light doesn't work, or there's no clouds so the image is just boring, and I get frustrated. It's good for people to see that you are actually just working hard for the images you get and you sometimes have to keep going back to get the image you want. I've been trying to incorporate that more into my photography and it has helped a ton.
this makes me feel like im watching a episode of COPS with all these in the car videos with you talking to a camera while driving LOL
Nick Carver, you are the man! :-) I am your big fan from up north 🇨🇦 Loving all your videos - I often rewatch them just for my viewing pleasure! I must confess - they inspired me to get out and enjoy photography again! And by the way - sometimes I use the safety vest as well!!! :))) And oh gosh... how I understand your frustration when things don't align perfectly for the shot... but oh boy how it is satisfying when things come together!
love the experience you share with us, from planning to final shot. from technical to simple advice, from why to how.... I alway wait for the weekend to see your new on location videos, so I can dedicate quality time to see them.
Hi Nick ! yeah... you are SOOOO purposeful and persistent ! Probably that's why your photos are great and videos are so interesting . Good luck ! With Respect to you and your creation . Evgeny from Russia
Such an underrated channel. I have never gone this far for a shot, but I think I should try.
Great image Nick! It would be great to see you and GrainyDays do a collaboration video. I think the two of you together would be very entertaining. Different styles, different workflows but the same love for shooting film!
The evening just got a whole lot better
Welcome back Nick. Great image and lovely composition. I was going to say that you should've moved the camera a little to the right so that the "T" in "TIRE" was fully visible but then the tree would've blocked the windshield of the bus.
That urban camo is genius, I'm gonna use it next time 👍
Just yesterday was thinking, "It's been a while since seeing Nick." And here you are! Turned a miserable, rainy day (week) in the PNW into a great escape.
That's the advantage of being in the PSW. Hardly ever a cloud, but you bake your balls off.
We settled in together on the sofa and put our feet up, ready to sit back and enjoy. And we did. And, since I've not seen anyone else say it here, we love the music, the bit with the fire, all of it.
Came out great. Tires out front make it 👌🏻 remember those expensive new 55 mistakes though.
Looking at the last seconds of the video and I’m thinking….that Autozone sign would’ve been cool! Lol
Great video. For me I really need to see those signs lit for this photo to be engaging. I like how you said it tells a story which is pretty cool. I know it was beyond your control but imagine how much juicier the result would have been with sign lights on. I admire your persistence and commitment. 👌
I'm drawn to the coldness of the Cinestill photos. It accentuates the loneliness and independence of an early shift life. The pink halo is an awesome contrast for the cool fluorescence lighting. I thought you were going to swallow the toothpick on a few occasions.
Perseverance ! You are submitting photography videos of highest value , Sir ! :-)
Please never stop making these vids.I have never owned a camera and you are making me wanna become a medium format photographer .
Love it, cars parked in front of buildings you want to photograph , just does you in, your perseverance is next level
Great to see you back doing an on location video. Thank you!
Lovely video to go with my morning coffee, thanks Nick!
Thanks for sticking it out. Great video! Even better photographs!!!! Love the comparison of the CineStill 800T to the Portra 400. I can't decide which I like better either.
Man I never imagine Nick Carver using a Cinestill film, which make vídeo even better
Please tell me you took a single tooth pick with you to all attempts haha! Love it!
Hahaha. I love your videos so much. You are so dedicated but it’s always worth it in the end.
Finallyyyy another on location video! “I need it injected into my blood”😂
That tyre just standing there :D
Thank you for your patience! So happy with a new on location film!
Oh yeah, more input from the master of goodness.....OMG!!!! A he has a fridge JUST for film!!! Be still my heart!!! You ARE the man Nick. One of the handful of automatic likes. Keep snappin' those images!!!!
All kinds of old buildings on Tustin Ave in Orange. Hell…even an old Firestone shop just like this one. I live off Katella and 55 and constantly think how you’d shoot some of these buildings.
The way it really is sometimes. Thanks.
Thanks as always Nick! I loved the cinestill shot!
Great job Nick! Love it
I'm digging the Portra shot more. I like the warm tones myself, but I know there are a ton of folks who love CineStill, and ain't nothing wrong with that!
Let's go. These are always worth the wait
Always entertaining!
Hard work pays of. Great picture Nick.
Simply the best content on UA-cam - well worth the wait. You should have a TV show!
My pleasure time as finally come!
Love these vids and love the architectural shots of classic American scenes. They’re what people outside America want America to be. 👍
These are my favorite. Great work.
I like the flutteries!
Great fun and inspiring as always.
I absolutely agree with your motivation, and what fantastic results you achieve!!
Always inspiring! Thanks for your time and effort!
Not sure this film works on anything other than gas stations at night…SHOTS FIRED!
Thank you so much for your content, you always motivate me to go out and take some pics 😁
Well done Nick...awesome video! You get an "A" in determination and perseverance!
Best one yet - loved your energy in this!
I'm not sure if these vintage Firestone neon signs are more rare in California, but here in the Midwest there are a lot of these that are actually illuminated every night. I'll have to make an effort to photograph these now.
As a OC local I love trying to figure out where you’re through background clues. Found it! Don’t worry I can keep a secret. Great video keep it up.
Love the series and really enjoyed this one!
A great way to end my day. Watching a Nick Carver location film. Top notch as ever. Great to see you work through your frustrations. I love those images. I’m from the UK so I’m really into the locations you shoot. Growing up watching loads of US tv shows these scenes are both familiar and different st the same time. Keep em coming!
these videos are awesome; thanks for all the effort you put into these!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when you take us along with you on your shooting and location scouting expeditions and share your thought processes.
GREAT stuff!
Can’t get enough of these On Location videos. Cinestill at peak light is my favorite photo, I like the cold colors of the storefront over portra.
