Now that I'm living in USDA Zone 7 in Arizona, I finally got ambitious and planted a Fuyu from a small container. I hope that I live long enough to eat the fruit and stand in it's shade!
My persimmon bear fruits for the first time thise year! And it dropped fruits when i did not water it for weeks. Out of the 40+ fruits, now 19. This year it started to bear fruits for the very 1st time. However the persimmon fruits are very small, not too much bigger than a cherry and its seeds inside are relatively large in size. Should I assume this tree was not grafted properly when it was young? If yes, can I now graft some of its branches? Thank you!

The deer absolutely love his yard and large herds including batchelor groups hang out there. It’s like Marty Stouffords wild America over there come peak hunting season. I have an asian persimmon that was doing well but some animal ate the leaves and broke the trunk off right before winter. the remaining trunk is about two feet tall and above the graft and it was planted with a very deep root. Is it possible that it will recover. Thank you for your video
I potted 3 asian persimmons due to lack of space and left them outside for maybe 5 winters. Now we have had fairly mild winters here in piedmont GA 7B 8A, but I suffered no loss. I think because the root stock is native, they are much more cold and wet tolerant than the asians.

Hi Jim, thank you for the very informative video. I live in North Seattle and just planted this spring a 2 feet jiro persimmon by the west fence. If I want it to grow up near the fence top about 5 feet before branching, will it be good to remove all side branches below to hasten the upward growth of the leader branch during its first growing season?
Persimmons grow pretty slow. I would just give it higher amounts of nitrogen to promote growth and prune lower branches as it grows. It will take time to get the shape you want. Treat it as a slow art piece :)

i live in Southern Ohio & i just planted a persimmon & the soil there was ok, then i planted 2 pear trees about 15' away from it but the soil in those 2 holes were rock, i had to use a pick, & as you just stated those holes will fill up w/ water & the trees are doomed.....so , i'm going to have to dig those two pears up, & find a better spot....SMH....a lot of work but at 89.oo each, i don't want them to die....
Great informative video thank you!
American Persimmons are out in California too. I have been eating persimmon cookies my whole life. My neighbors have a tree and I can get all the free persimmons I want. I just threw 3 fuyu persimmon seeds in a pot I had in the house with an avocado I grew from seed, and all 3 just germinated! Now I want to know how to dwarf this tree with pruning. Do tell!!
I'm very exited to hear you say that Fuyu persimmon trees could be planted in pots. I live in zone 5a, can I prune it and keep it short, what should be the minimum height? if so, can it be planted in planters smaller than 25 gallons? Thanks.
Hi nice video.Have a quick question.I plant a persimmon tree about 7 yrs nowand it's not giving any fruits. Was jus wondering why.Its very tall but no fruits
Great explanation
hi, here in NC do they tolerate our winters? how do we protect them in the winter? thanks for the great video!
We live in the northeast or Northwest of Vancouver and I was wondering if we should leave our tree persimmon tree in the pot or put it in the ground?
Hi Jim ! Thank you for posting these very helpful videos. I live in Texas, El Paso to be more precise and I got two fuyu persimmons. One is 4 feet and the other 5 feet high. I plant them this last winter and they seem to be doing ok except for the fact that they haven't grown much at all. soil is a bit clay-ish, not too much I water twice a week, for 15 or 20 minutes with a stream of water about an eight of an inch or little more coming out of the hose. Weather here can get to be very hot. Is this too little water, too much water? any help will be greatly appreciated !!!
Sorry, you haven’t gotten a reply.
I’m kind of going through the same thing with my persimmon. I planted it this last May . I tried it about 2 months ago and is like it stoped growing completely.
Thank you so much for the information I was just blessed with one of these last week, have NEVER eaten thr fruit and have been researching HOW to ADEQUATELY take care of it. I am in Southern NM... will leave in pot this year as winters are iffy lately. Grateful for your detailed video! Wanted to be a new subscriber, yet not in a position to pay for membership at this time. I also have a cutting (tried to advise them we should wait for colder weather) from neighbors pomegranate tree that is not doing great. ANY ADVICE to keep it alive? Thanks in advance.
How did it go?
Great video!
Hi Jim. I have a Fuyu tree and for the past 2 years all the fruit dropped from the tree while still small. What can I do to prevent this from happening next season?
I’d like to propagate some of my neighbors common persimmons.
The house he bought has three mature trees that are about 25-30’ high and yield a massive amount of fruit.
The deer absolutely love his yard and large herds including batchelor groups hang out there.
It’s like Marty Stouffords wild America over there come peak hunting season.
I’d like to propagate some cuttings but I’m not sure if they will fruit .
I’ll get some from each tree but I was wondering when is the best time of year to try this?
I have an asian persimmon that was doing well but some animal ate the leaves and broke the trunk off right before winter. the remaining trunk is about two feet tall and above the graft and it was planted with a very deep root. Is it possible that it will recover. Thank you for your video
Hi Jim, is this persimmon will grow in tropical area.
I potted 3 asian persimmons due to lack of space and left them outside for maybe 5 winters. Now we have had fairly mild winters here in piedmont GA 7B 8A, but I suffered no loss. I think because the root stock is native, they are much more cold and wet tolerant than the asians.
Thanks for the video. I live in Yukon, Oklahoma. Where can I buy a Persimmon tree?
I have 1 of a kind of fuyu persimmon every year the young leafs has been bit off to its shoot from some insects Would you tell me why it's young leaf not stay like other kind? Appreciate, for sharing
Hi, I have a fuyu for 10 years now in zone 6. They will fruit and drop all of them. Could it be a male tree or could not be a fuyu when they sold it to me? Thank you.
I have not been able to root a persimmon cutting. Do you have a video on the matter?
Terrific vid!
I just planted a Fuyu in Coastal British Columbia
Thank you for good information... I have 20yrs old persimmon tree and gave me very bad fruits....i think my tree has fungus and insects....what kind of pesticide would you recommend for my persimmon tree?
Thanks! I appreciate the info. I was thinking of growing these but with all the "Bug" issues, I think I'll pass. :)
Im in Zone 9, northern CA, never had any bug issues on my two fuyu persimmon trees. They are 4 yrs old, 7-8 ft tall, pruned every fall to keep them in check. Very health, no bugs of any kind.
No bug issue at all for both my fuyu, every year they produce abundant crops.
Where did you guys buy your tree? For some reason I can’t have this variety shipped to Southern California 😩
Great informative video!
Very informative thank you. One question how do you start this persimmon if it does not have a seed? Do you just have to buy the trees From the garden center or can I cut one in half and see if it will begin to root?
Hybrid persimmons don't produce seed. They are typically grafted and should be purchased.
Hey, Jim. Thanks for the great info! Do you think 90+ degree weather in July is too late to plant a 5' fuyu? Should I wait until the Fall to get one?
Yes..plant tree's in the fall for better results.
Do you spray them with anything against bugs and diseases?
They are divine
Great info, thanx 😀
Yes thank Jim my problem with my persimmon is that there’s plenty of small fruits that fell to the ground and I don’t know how to prevent fruits to fell do you have any suggestions
They tend to fall off in their first 2-3 years but after that with good watering in dry weather they will stop loosing the fruit .
Great video thank you! :) I've read that fuyu persimmons (my fav) can grow in zone 7a, but I can't find anywhere if they would survive and fruit in UTAH's zone 7a - does anyone know?
A date plum is Diospyros Lotus, while the common persimmon as it is referred to in the the United States is Diospyros Virginiana. So a different species.
