I planted those persimmon seed 13 years ago and forgot about it completely. Last summer I found that that strange tree outside of my window was a persimmon tree with fully ripe persimmons on it! They are much smaller than store bought persimmons, but still, it's pretty cool. Unfortunately, they are up an embankment and I can never get to the fruit, so that's the sad part. But just so people know you can literally plant a seed and forget about it and grow a persimmon tree. Try at least an 8" deep pot and plant in worm castings, works for me. 6 years and average 37 to 60 fruit from 4 trees I planted in full sun on my place in East Texas.
Thanks for the tip.I got my persimmons from the neighbor. And put six seed in a baggy like you mentioned on your video. Two weeks later I found five seeds germinates.Today I put it in the pot.Thank you again.
glad to watch this video, I love persimmon fruit, a few weeks before I try plant from seed and today i'm so happy my plant growing, hope our weather suits with the plant.
My persimmon didn't have any seeds, so I will have to keep an eye out somewhere else. They look like they make really nice plants, can't wait for updates. Looks like spring has started over there :)
For the germination process, I really just put some soil in a little platic bowl, planted the seed, put a little amont of water and close the bowl with a lid. I put the bowl in front of a window so it can get plenty of sun and warmt from it. It took really no time at all before it started to sprout. I find this method is the best most of the time and you don't have to worry as much for breaking the roots that are tingled in the paper towel.
Very nice that you have persimmons growing! You are right, I didn't have much luck finding a viable seed in the ones I bought. But I'm going to keep trying and hopefully I find some that has seeds. The fruit is good tasting anyway so it's not a waste. :) Thanks for sharing, Kalem!
I'm growing persimmon seeds as well, I Definetly thought I was doing somethin wrong because of the way of root but now I have reassurance that I am growing them right. Thanks for your help! Ps your accent is sexy.
Love your cat. Also can hear all the birds in your yard. I checked out your website because the persimmon is new to me. It is many raw recipes and I have a feeling I am going to like it. I live in Florida and found it tough to find them especially ripened, which is how I need them to be!!!! I bought around seven and need them in a few days. Some of them are soft. I am supposed to use them when they are gooey!! Thanks for showing how to grow them!!
Hardest thing in cultivation of persimmon is to reach the seeds. I can freely say that on average you have to eat 5 kg of fruit to get one seed. The two most common varieties of persimmon in my stores are Fuyu and Hachiya. Seeds of these two varieties are drastically different. After removing the seeds from the fruit I wash them and leave submerged in water for 48 hours. Then move them into a zip-lock and keep in the fridge until mid-February. Seeds treated in this manner germinates within a week
+Stevan Miletic I've come across a couple of seeds in one fruit a few months back and kept them. Sadly, they were not stratified, I didn't know that was necessary for growing persimmon from a seed. They're also dry now, so I wonder if is it not to late to try and stratify them in a fridge. What do you think? I would appreciate an advice :)
+Milena Hi Milena. If you have enough seed you can divide them into two groups. Soak one group in warm water for two days and plant immediately. You can put another group on two months stratification after immersion. I kept seeds in dry conditions in refrigerator up to 3 years and it has germinated in a reasonable percentage. In any case, soaking is necessary.
Have you ever tried American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)? They are plum sized, with thicker more fragrant pulp. There are also some hybrids between D. virginiana and D. kaki.
I was surprised to get a seed from supermarket persimmons, so put it at once into 1 thin pepper tower and keep it wet as much as possible then over a week saw a tiny spout. Had put it in a pot with soil a few days ago. I hope it will make it out!
I had the same question. I can see fully blooming daffodils in the garden in the background but I think growing inside during winter would be acceptable.
Hi from France, I got a couple of Fuyu Persimmons from my local organic shop, they were over-ripe and they gave them to me for my chickens but they looked so good we ate them! They have very large seeds inside so I am going to have a go with your two methods and see what comes up. Just a tip, organic shops sell non-hybrid - old variety fruit so if you want seeds that's also an option. Best Wishes and thanks for the information, Pavlovafowl aka Sue

I just planted the only one seed I found among the Fuyu persimmons I harvested directly into the ground, few weeks later I have a new persimmon plant 😁 what a surprise ...
I’ve got persimmons coming up all over my 3 acres and need to dig them up bf I cut. They’re about a foot tall. Not sure which kind but my trees are loaded. Are all the seeds that big?
I might be an exception to the norm. I very easily germinated a persimmon seed from a store bought fruit. I was surprised to even find seed and accidentally cut one of them. It is now 4" tall. It is a Fuyu type and unfortunately I don't think it will survive in my zone here in Canada. Do you think I can successfully grow it doing a indoor\outdoor scenario? I am a horticulturalist but am not familiar with persimmon enough to know. Any input would be appreciated.
I haven't looked too deeply into container growing them, but I plan to do something similar for black sapote which are related and more cold sensitive. Persimmons handle frost where I live fine, so maybe if you protect yours inside, even if it gets a bit cold in there it should be fine. They do have a long deep tap root, so will definitely need a large deep pot. Worth a go I reckon. Would be keen to find out how it goes! :)
Thank you so much for your video. I've started to grow many thing from their seed and my persimmon was weird with it's roots curving and all. So I tried to plant the seed numerous time and it was always kinda resurfacing. Now I understand why! As for myself, it's true that most of the persimmons I bought were seedless but once in a while, I stumble upon some and save them. I was more lucky with fruits and vegetables little store that are not affiliated to big grocery chain.
The reason no seed from stores is it was picked early because the fruit is too soft to ship. These days you can buy good seed online rather reasonably from Virginia or Wisconsin.
Great video once again Kalem, I have never seen this fruit where I live and I was thinking of buying my seeds from online, what do you think? Thanks for that and they look very sturdy plants and lovely leaves, amazing!
Hey huw! Wow, 7 year old comment. Did you ever get your persimmon trees? I will say, wild American persimmons pack much more flavor than the Japanese varieties. Think figs mixed with dates. I have enjoyed watching your videos btw!
Hello from Atlanta USA and thanks a lot for your video. i just got 5 large seeds from some organic persimmons can you tell me please when is it a good time of the year to plant it in the ground ? and what type of weather do these persimmons trees like?
I bought a few fruits at the grocery store and they had seeds inside here in Auckland first time I've ever seen seeds inside persimmon will see if they grow.
I found a few seed in fuyu' I just bought. Rare find. Going to see if they will germinate or not? I've got 2 fuyu and a giant fuyu tree that I purchased. Also have a American persimmon "male" about twenty feet tall I'm thinking about cutting down and grafting some scion to. That might be cool to have on native large root stock.
Hello, I have a question as I am a novice gardener. When using the paper towel/bag method, after the roots have sprouted, do you completely bury the entire seed and root, or do you just plant the root and leave the seed exposed?
I have a bunch of seeds from last year and I planted some in the sandy soil of Las Vegas. I also threw some avocado seeds into my compost pile and I have about 6 trees coming up. One I transplanted to another location in my yard and it seems to be thriving. My only question is the one I transplanted an avocado or a Fuyu Persimmon. The leaves look more like the persimmon trees I've seen ...very bright lime green and large. Its about 10" high right now. The leaves on the other trees are slimmer and start out sort of dark brown and get greener as they develop. If anyone could help me identify whether or not this little tree is a Fuyu Persimmon tree, I'd be oh so grateful! Now that we're coming in to the Winter months I'm wondering if I need to surround it with sweaters or something appropriate to keep it from dying?
Just a little education from someone who has been into horticulture since I could hold a shovel. Native varietals of persimmon are either male or female trees. The modern varieties, from nurseries, are most likely all female. They will grow persimmons, but they are a 'sterile' or seedless fruit. In order to get seeds in your fruit you must have at least 1 male in the area in order to make the fruit 'fertile' or seeded. I hope I settled your curiosity about the persimmon.
Hi, would it work out the same for Hachiyas? I managed in the Fuyus I got from the Asian market to get 4 seeds, but I was cutting into my hachiyas and hit one. I gotta admit hitting a persimmon seed feels like you've won a prize in a video game or something. Also cool cat.
Can you mention where you are growing these. It makes a big difference what your climate is. Persimmons are ripe and available where I live now, but it is the beginning of winter. I doubt I could get it to grow at this time of year outside. Can I put it in the plastic bag and wait till spring to try and germinate them?
Actually, I've had luck with germination that I would like to put here for the next person. American Persimmon is best for cold climates, do your research on what persimmon is best for your climate. Soak in warm water for 6 days, some make start during this process. Those that don't, you can use the paper towels method but keep an eye on them for mold. You can spray the water mixed with hydrogen peroxide to avoid this. It helps.
Hi! Question for you. I have two seeds that I extracted from the fruit. I let them dry as stated in an article that I read on the internet. They now look very dry. Can I still use the wet towel, zip bag method to see if they will germinate? Thanks!
Am in the UK. (East Midlands, zone 8). I found one seed in a persimmon. I planted it, put it on my kitchen windowsill and forgot about it. It's now 3" high and its first cotyledon leaves are a nice deep green colour, and there's the tiniest hint of a new pair of true leaves developing. Just coming into our late winter/early spring period here. By the time Spring is well and truly here, it will be well on its way... So. Now what? Keep it in a pot? Outside for the warmer weather? What about next winter? And when do I get to pick the fruit?!? (J/K...!)
Hi, I grew a persimmon from seeds like you did, can you let me know if your persimmon's stem started browning and drying out a month after the leaves sprouted? There is 4 leaves to the tree and it looks very green and healthy only thing that worried me is the stem started browning and drying.
Sparky is gorgeous and you're not so bad yourself. Hopefully you managed to avoid the big quake down your way and are safe. I'm curious as to whether you've heard of Kratky gardening and whether that would work for the Fuyu.
Hi Kalem, Just to be sure....is the paper towel moist and did you put the bag with the seeds in the fridge or on a warm location (or does that depend on what variety)? Thank's and greetings from Spain ;-))
ok, I have a few questions, so after you put them in the plastic bag wrapped by a paper towel or a napkin, what you do with them? Do you zip close the bag or leave it unzipped? where you keep them, in a fresh place or warm? at about what temperature? and, how long? Thanks
British Columbia and the Ontario peninsula, and Saint Lawrence valley, Atlantic coast. Persimmons love heat so Great lakes peninsula and Saint Lawrence river valley is best. Central Canada may get hotter in summer but is too cold in winter. They winter kill.

kia ora stevan, great video and thanks for sharing. there's a guy who's been selling fuyu persimmons on the side of the road for the past month and some - $5 bags for like 2kilograms worth. he said today that he has about three weeks of picking left. anyway, i bought a couple of bags and he gave me his seeds that he had from his samples he shares with his customers. i'm going try a few planting direct into soil and i will stratify the others. i am determined to have my own fruits in a few years time. will let you know how i get on. btw, i live in auckland.
I have many questions for you. Why the paper towel? Does it have to be wet? Where do you put the ziplock bag? How deep do you plant the song once it's germinated? Is there any particular kind of soil? Does it have to be in full sun? Please could you be more specific about these things thank you.
This is an awesome video...thanks for sharing your knowledge :) I have some of the seeds that I would like to grow as well...I'll keep you posted once I have some success on it - regards! May
Wow. Disregard my question now that I see the size of the tree. I will, however, start planting anyway and transfer it to my mother's yard once it gets big enough.
Etsy. They have it all over the place. I've purchased some and they were germinating fairly quickly. Also it depends on the type you buy, American Persimmons are good with colder climates. Asian Persimmons aren't.
Im a zillion miles across the other side of the world, lurve persimmons lol, Im not sure they will grow in the UK even though I have seen one supplier selling the plants - Perhaps for a greenhouse :( Good to see a young man and his cat interested in growing stuff.
Hi there... love your channel :). I was wondering what type of soil you use...? Is it from your garden or do you purchase soil for your seedlings? I've had really poor experiences with purchased soil. The soil tends to be "dead" and really dry in a way that almost repels water. I've added worm castings in the past and more recently I purchased humus soil... much nicer texture and absorption. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!
wanted to know that too so did a bit of search: it tolerates any soil type but for best results, neutral pH 6.5-7.5 in a sunny and well draining spot, a good distance from buildings so it can grow roots without limitations... has a long taproot. Good luck growing the persimmons!
Hey,thanks for a great video and your cat is charming:) I already found you on Facebook;) So..I just found a big surprise - a seed in a persimmon that i bought from a supermarket. I didn't even known that persimmons do have seeds! I'm keep eating more of them but don't find any seeds. I found an advice that before seeding persimmons you must to refrigerate seeds for 3-4 months, because Germination of persimmon tree seeds requires a period of consistent cold. Do you refrigerate your seeds?
I see this question was posted a couple of years ago, not sure if you are still interested. I picked persimmons at a local park, and fruit was filled with seeds. After rinsing them, I placed them into wet paper towels, and stored this in fridge for 3 months. Then planted in one pot, hoping few would germinate. 4 months later I lost hope, and started digging a bit with my finger. Low and behold, there was actually green to see below the soil. I probably planted 30 seeds, and they all germinated. Now I am in process of dividing them into bigger pots. I am learning as I go, not exactly sure when to plant outside in the yard. I assume when they are about 1 to 2 ' tall. I have way too many seedlings, and hope to give most of them away. A fun project!
Question, do i need to dry the seed into the sun first? Or i can plant the seed directly after eating the fruit? (Totally no idea on this, my prospect seed is a mabolo, relative to persimons)
@@TheKiwiGrower hi, do you have to wet the paper towel before putting seeds on and placing in ziplock bag. Also what type of soil did you transplant your last one into

I have 1 seen that i have had in water for 2 months and has just sprouted..... Which way should i put it into pot..... Seed on top or bottom
Well done mate, ive grown a few like you have too and will be planting out these soon,
When you put the seat in the plastic container can you put it in the fridge call you put it in a warm place .
nice looking plants and root system, wonders if you'll get blooms in it's first year ? :) thanks for sharing. Another fruit I've yet to try.
Do I plant the seed with the sprout down in the soil
Hi, I grew a persimmon from seeds like you did, can you let me know if your persimmon's stem started browning and drying out a month after the leaves sprouted? There is 4 leaves to the tree and it looks very green and healthy only thing that worried me is the stem started browning and drying.
one question I could leave them out side only in warm weather thanks in advance
Sparky is gorgeous and you're not so bad yourself. Hopefully you managed to avoid the big quake down your way and are safe.
I'm curious as to whether you've heard of Kratky gardening and whether that would work for the Fuyu.
Hi Kalem,
Just to be sure....is the paper towel moist and did you put the bag with the seeds in the fridge or on a warm location (or does that depend on what variety)? Thank's and greetings from Spain ;-))
where the seeds of persimmons are achieved? I am from mexico
ok, I have a few questions, so after you put them in the plastic bag wrapped by a paper towel or a napkin, what you do with them? Do you zip close the bag or leave it unzipped? where you keep them, in a fresh place or warm? at about what temperature? and, how long? Thanks
Hi there, keep the bag sealed to keep the moisture and humidity in. Keep in a warm area in your house and just check them every week or so :)
I just love this fruit very much
It will grow in Go?
I have some seeds, when is the best time to pop them into a pot? Thanks
Can you please do an update video on these?!
great vid man like how you highlight that its better to start with a fairly sized pot as they develop roots fast.
i have never heard of persimmons but i love all fruit trees, and i was wondering if they would grow in canada
British Columbia and the Ontario peninsula, and Saint Lawrence valley, Atlantic coast. Persimmons love heat so Great lakes peninsula and Saint Lawrence river valley is best. Central Canada may get hotter in summer but is too cold in winter. They winter kill.
@@johnprovocative3340 trying it now..just planted a seed in the experimrntal pot....popcorn seeds grew and afew still sprouting so i put them in same pot...seeif my daylight led and being inside might help it grow
Thank you for the info 👌🏻👌🏻🙋 Becky said hello and lovely chirping of birds in your video ❤️❤️❤️
Hi I really like your clips I have wated to grow a coconut here in s cal
I enjoy your videos thanks for your tips,
kia ora stevan, great video and thanks for sharing. there's a guy who's been selling fuyu persimmons on the side of the road for the past month and some - $5 bags for like 2kilograms worth. he said today that he has about three weeks of picking left. anyway, i bought a couple of bags and he gave me his seeds that he had from his samples he shares with his customers. i'm going try a few planting direct into soil and i will stratify the others. i am determined to have my own fruits in a few years time. will let you know how i get on. btw, i live in auckland.
PolyNZian wow it's cheap $5 in a bag. Could u please send me some seeds...
I have many questions for you. Why the paper towel? Does it have to be wet? Where do you put the ziplock bag? How deep do you plant the song once it's germinated? Is there any particular kind of soil? Does it have to be in full sun? Please could you be more specific about these things thank you.
Hola, que tal seguido lo riegas?
Do need a male and female plant for fruit development?
Thank you for sharing
Is Persimmona tropical plant?
How long does it take for the persimmon tree to bear fruit after it is planted from a seed?
Hi
Can I buy the plants 🌱 of the sharon fruit
Very interesting! I just ate a couple of permissions the other day. 😊😊
Where did you get persimmon's that big.
Did you dry the seeds out before putting them into the plastic bag to germinate? Thank you for your video!
No just planted them fresh :)
thank you :) Did you do a stratification Like!
Hi..Do you have any update on this tree?
once planted and growing do this seed need some kind of food or fertilizer or something?
thanks
Hi,
I brought some persimmon seeds from Japan as a souvenir and now I want to grow them. I like your video! But what kind of soil do you use?
We rent our house and was wondering if you think persimmons could thrive as a potted tree? so that if and when we move it could come with us :)
Hey Sparki and owner! Great Video. What is the appropriate climate for persimmon to grow and where can I purchase the seeds that will germinate?
Etsy. They have it all over the place. I've purchased some and they were germinating fairly quickly. Also it depends on the type you buy, American Persimmons are good with colder climates. Asian Persimmons aren't.
With the paper towel method do you wet the paper towel at all!?
Yup just keep it slightly damp
Good work there Kalem. I reckon that plant will be going into a bigger pot pretty soon. How long do these take to produce fruit?
Do they love water? How much water do they need per week? Thanks
Im a zillion miles across the other side of the world, lurve persimmons lol, Im not sure they will grow in the UK even though I have seen one supplier selling the plants - Perhaps for a greenhouse :( Good to see a young man and his cat interested in growing stuff.
By the way, in which country you are growing all your plants?
Hi there... love your channel :).
Hey,thanks for a great video and your cat is charming:) I already found you on Facebook;)
So..I just found a big surprise - a seed in a persimmon that i bought from a supermarket. I didn't even known that persimmons do have seeds! I'm keep eating more of them but don't find any seeds.
I found an advice that before seeding persimmons you must to refrigerate seeds for 3-4 months, because Germination of persimmon tree seeds requires a period of consistent cold. Do you refrigerate your seeds?
i did this already :)
what are your plans with them, do they need to be grafted?
where can one get the persimmon seeds and kiwi seeds. would like to try 50 plants. please help with the supplier.
This is very informative and useful. Thank you
Hi, just wondering if you know whether trees grown from seed will fruit very well?
Do you need to place the zip lock bag near a sunny window?
A fun project!
do you apply stratification method prior to propagation?
Hi, no I didn't and it still worked fine :)
Question, do i need to dry the seed into the sun first? Or i can plant the seed directly after eating the fruit? (Totally no idea on this, my prospect seed is a mabolo, relative to persimons)
Hi, no need to dry the seed :) good luck
@@TheKiwiGrower hi, do you have to wet the paper towel before putting seeds on and placing in ziplock bag.
Also what type of soil did you transplant your last one into
Have seeds but not sure when to plant them as I live in Victoria Australia
is persimmon and velvet apple the same?
