- I designed and built this simulator on wheels using aluminum extrusion, 6mm PVC plastic walls, dual adjustable racing seats, the Simionic G1000 avionics suite, and the Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo flight controls. I'm currently running XPlane and MSFS 2020.
If you're interested in building something similar, I will freely share my design and encourage you to go for it. It's so worth it.
You'll need the MAY-CAD free software package: maytec.com.de/...
If you can't download the updated MAY-CAD software, I have a Jan, 2023 copy here:
microvote.shar...
And here's my design:
microvote.shar...
Here are a couple of sources for the aluminum and panels. Just tell them to repeat my order and have everything cut to size. Lead time is about 10 days for the aluminum and a few days for the plastic:
Nick Thinnes, Neff Automation (They're a distributor for 8020. Ask for a discount): nthinnes@neffautomation.com
Scott Thurber, Meyer Plastics: STHURBER@meyerplastics.com
You will also need to order screws, nuts, and right-angle brackets from Amazon. Just print out the BOM from the design and see what you need. Then start building!
I posted some discussions about my project on Facebook. Just search for my name (Bernie Hirsch) here: / flightsimsetups
Here was my budget:
Simionic: $989 (1 bezel/1 com panel)
(I already own a bezel and iPad from several years ago so add another $1000 if you need these)
Apple iPad 10.2inch 10th Gen (Amazon): $329
Honeycomb yoke (XPlane.org): $270
Honeycomb throttle (Honeycomb): $258
Computer (XForcePC): $3080
Two 32” monitors (ViewSonic VX3276-2K-MHD) (Amazon): $543
Two TV mounts for 32” monitors (Amazon): $29
One 75” TV (BestBuy): $695
MantelMount TV mount (down and out) (Amazon): $245
Rudder pedals (Thrustmaster TFRP) (Amazon): $130 (plus Honeycomb Charlie $??)
FlightSounds 2-place intercom (FlightSounds): $244
Two leather chairs/rails (Ebay): $341
Aluminum frame (extrusion, end caps, door hardware, tools) (8020.net/Neff): $1530
Ten 8080 corner brackets (Amazon): $117
Cockpit hardware (brackets, screws, t-nuts, rounded end caps): $461
PVC 6mm white panels (Meyer Plastics): $225
Lumber, hardware, carpet, primer and paint for panel/floor: $300
Subtotal: $9786
I also upgraded my network infrastructure a bit to improve the Wifi reception in my basement to sync the two iPads together, but didn’t include that in this build since not everyone will have that issue.
I used ½” MDF board to cutout the panel which is primed and painted. The floor is ¾” MDF board, which is primed and then covered using adhesive backed carpet squares.
Fantastic, and not a huge footprint. I like it.
probably the coolest, yet most reasonable and functional home cockpit setup I've ever seen. very nice job! I would never leave.
I know. It's tough to shut it down. So many places to visit...
I think this is the gold standard for home cockpit - on a pricy side but still very affordable if one need a full cockpit. Great setup, thanks for sharing, very inspiring
Since posting this video last year, Microsoft has updated its MSFS software to include multi-monitor support. That means instead of stretching the view out the front window across all three monitors, I can now designate a 90-degree view out of each side window (+90 for the right window, -90 for the left window). When looking out of the side windows I now see a bit of the interior of the airplane around the edges of the screen, and look out over the wing to see the ground (in a low-wing airplane). It's fantastically realistic!
Bernie, OOPS! I just clicked on SHOW MORE and will follow your instructions. Thanks.
fantastic -- double use of space + optimised screen layout (hidden bevels)-- very smart project.
While the whole world uses 3080 for playing Fortnite , this person puts it to actual use to gain experience and actually having fun. Nice setup! Cannot wait to see the upgrades!
Nice to be able to share the experience with others! I have a next level racing setup with TrackIR as well as a VR setup too. Thanks for sharing
What a nice setup! Thanks for sharing.
Very nice. I like that it's a dual purpose rig which can be pushed out of the way.
We sometimes watch movies so why not?
Absolutely superb. We’ll done.
Thanks, Dylan.
Very nice. Super clean.
nice job bro. seat sim
Clean install. I too went with a mobile simpit that you could see on my page. Like the door window screens as well.
Nicely done! 👏👏👏...
thats sickkk
im going to try and build one like that over the years, great stuff
So beautiful~~!!
Thanks!
outstanding!
Thanks, Angelo.
Well that's absolutely ridiculous!!! I want one!
Only $10K...
Thank you so much for providing your design
Creating the design was the fun part. Sharing it with other aviators gives me immense joy.
Absolutely amazing 👌👌👌
Glad you think so!
OMG ! OMG ! That's what I said when I saw your setup...amazing man...amazing.
Wow, thanks!
Coming from racing sims now getting into flight sims, I appreciate all the attention to detail you have in this setup, which I can only assume has been upgraded more since the posting of this video. Great work!
This is fantastic. I am in awe.
Very clean and simple setup
Glad you like it!
Wow that’s a really nice set-up!!!
Thanks. It's a great connector for dads and sons.
Very nice build. Top notch!
Thanks!
Well built, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure.
very well done indeed
awesome set up
I'm glad you like it
Wow ! Amazing ! Thank you for sharing your files ! Unfortunately, the access on microvote to get your files is no longer available :-(
Working now.
Awesome
Thanks!
Good job man
Thanks, Bill.
@@bernie_hirsch you’re welcome
awesome setup, thanks for sharing !
You bet
Bernie, absolutely beautiful! You just made my day, this is exactly what I would like to build. I purchased the full simionic as well as the standby gauges. I’ve been scouring UA-cam for the past year looking for ideas and thanks to you I now know what I’m going to build. Any specs you can share? Is the aluminum easy to work with? What about the PVC panels, where do I get them? Where would I purchase the aluminum? I’m loving your setup!!
So you can download the design and all the specs will print out in a BOM from within the software. I bought the PVC from Meyer Plastics in Indy (see the description). The aluminum is super easy to work with because I ordered it all pre-cut. Fit together like a glove with connectors bought off of Amazon. I spent months designing the sim and gathering together all the components. The actual build of the cockpit only took a couple of weeks including the time to custom design and cutout the panel.
This is great!
Thank you!
Super cool.. working on the same thing. But I don't have to share the space thankfully :)
That is beautiful! I have been working on a C172 cockpit for X-Plane for quite a while. Now that I've seen FS2000 I want to convert it for that, but I have no clue at the moment how to interface my controls.
Depends on your controls. But it's so much fun when they start working!
Totally Awesome!
Thanks!
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
Thanks!
HI Bernie, impressive clean desing. Thanks for sharing; the files on sharefile are not accessible anymore and would be very interested.
Try again.
@@bernie_hirsch that does the trick. Thanks!
Down and out, cranial nerve III
Give one to Bob.. make Rosells rich. Make the Hoods and Covingtons rich
Very nice mate and great work. Let me know what you think of my setup as is similar to what you have.....
Thanks, will do!
Awesome build. Can you make a video of the simulator in action? Like a video of you flying in it.
I'll try and make this happen. In the meantime, going flying for real today!
I just updated the link to the design file. Enjoy!
👏👏👏
😊
Nice set up. Now only if you can get it to shake rattle and roll !!!!!!!🤣
I'm considering adding a full motion chair for VR flying. I considered making my sim full motion but the mechanics were just a little beyond what I wanted to tackle and I didn't think it would really add much more realism. I have a commercial license with an instrument rating and train to ignore my senses anyway and just go by what I see.
Aye!🎉🎉🎉
Hi, on your PC, the inlets of the radiator need to be higher than the cpu block/pump, because any air in the loop can be trapped in the pump shortening its life span. you could either flip the radiator, so that the inlets are at the top not the bottom, or mount the radiator at the top of the case. Apart from that it looks really good.
I'll have to take a look at that. I didn't build the PC, it was a pre-built. That was the only way I could get the video card during the shortage.
Awesome setup you have there Bernie, nice and clean and very functional. I am looking to do something similar but for now I have a question on your choice of the Simionic G1000 suite. How do you feel about it now that you've been using it for a while? I too have my own plane, an Experimental Glasair IIS with all Garmin panel. I plan on using the Sim to stay sharp on instruments as well so I am especially interested in knowing if the Simionic is functionally correct to the G1000. I am currently using X-Plane 11 on my Mac but plan to build a PC later so I can try MSFS 2020. Thank you!
I find it 95% correct.
How did you get the 3 screens to show without the interior of the plane showing up? Great build btw....
The MSFS panel is below the front monitor and I can use the hat switch on the yoke to pan down to it if I want. I just set the front view to be looking out the window. I set each of the side views to 90 degrees. You can actually still see a bit of the interior of the airplane around the edges of the window as you look out toward each wing. Seems very realistic.
I'm trying to figure out how the monitors are attached to the door....looks great. I would love to build this but I would want it to all be one piece I don't need mine to be multipurpose. Would your design allow for the monitor on the front to be attached? Also looks like you're in CAP? :)
Yes, I'm a member of CAP. The side monitors are mounted to the aluminum extrusion with these: Monoprice Titan Series Fixed TV Wall Mount Bracket for TVs 13in to 27in Max Weight 66 lbs VESA Patterns Up to 100x100 Black a.co/d/jhmn5Ve
I didn't include the extrusion to mount the front TV to the frame, but it wouldn't be difficult to add a few extra pieces to the design to securely mount a large TV. The extrusion is quite strong.
Bernie, I am seeing this for the first time. I know its a year old and dont know if your still replying, however can you give more information about the extrusion and plastic walls/ I am fairly proficient at wood projects but would like to give this one a try. Thanks BobR
The plans are in the description below the video. It was actually really easy to assemble. The suppliers completed all the extrusion and plastic PVC wall cutting before delivery. All I had to do was attach the connectors and tighten them for the extrusion, and cut out the corners of the PVC for the connectors (the supplier offered to do this, but it would have added more cost, and I decided to do this myself).
Great and clean setup! How did you mount the side monitors?
Really easy to do. As you can see from the video, there's some aluminum extrusion going across the opening for the monitor. I just attached one of these to the extrusion: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UDT58O
@@bernie_hirsch That explains it! Thanks and happy flying!
Really nice setup...how did you connect all the monitors to the PC? Thx
@@SimCenterUSA the nVidia GEForce RTX 3080 video card supports 3 hi-def displays.
Looks great, could you update the link sharing your design?
Updated.
Nice setup! Wishing I had me one! Also, was that a fart at 2:01?
Not sure what that was but it wasn't me! haha
My problem are to get the tree monitors to work like this... in both Xplane and MFS2020....
Where did you get your extrusions? Did you custom order them cut, or did you just order a bunch in bulk and cut yourself? What did you use to design? I've never found any good programs for designing with extrusion.
I explain all of this in the description below the video.
@@bernie_hirsch Crap my bad! I didn't even look. So many YT videos have nothing but promotion in the description I really never bother looking. so sorry!
Hi Bernie, superb sim. What size 8020 did you use?
A variety. Just download the software and my design and then print out a BOM. It has all the parts to order.
beautiful build! could you share your design doc in other place? The link in description is expired. Thanks!!
The download link is now working.
110%
Bernie, I downloaded the MAY-CAD software but could not get your files. Said that the max downloads had already been downloaded. Can I get a link from you. Thanks
The link has been updated.
Hi Bernie. Could you please post another link to your design, the one you have posted here says "Access denied The access limit for these files has already been reached. This link is no longer valid.", when trying to access it. Thanks!
I created a new link in the description.
i need that 16 port usb hub
very cool. how is the experience with 3 screens? how did you setup the software for that? I'm contemplating a 3 screen setup so I'm curious.
I love three screens. Feels real.
Beautiful build. How much did all this cost? Interested in building one. Also, your design doesn't download. Thanks for sharing.
I posted my budget in the description. The design will now download as well.
Is there a way you can send me plans for the sim build? Thx
Just look at the description below the video.
How was this done and how did you remove the simulator panel?
It's hidden beneath the physical panel.
Hi Bernie, Great cockpit and very similar to what I am envisioning to build. Is it possible to reshare the design as the limit appears to have been exceeded? Trying to get an idea on the design so I can start creating mine :)
Reshared.
Hi Bernie, Great set up. I have started building one too. I really like the way yours is moveable and with doors. I was wondering if I could get some design ideas and dimensions you found best.
@@mikechristison7843 if you print out a BOM, all the dimensions are there.
@@bernie_hirsch thank you. Also wondering if you have tried a butt kicker with it ?
@Mike Christison thought about it but didn't add that. It would be easy to attach something to the seat support.
I am soo clumsy. ! 😭😂
You have five screens. How many video cards are you using?
One video card for the front and side screens. The two G1000 video screens are controlled by the video card in each iPad.
@@bernie_hirsch right. You're using the G1000 with the iPads. I had forgotten about those. I thought it was the ones that had a display panel and you had to run it from a video card. Thanks for the response.
Do you still have the link for the chairs on ebay.
They're no longer available for sale. The listing was 202786172317.
Please , the components of the pc. Nice job
It's a pre-built by XForce: Intel 10-Core i9-10900K at up to 5.3GHz (Water Cooled), MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WIFI, Corsair iCue H150I Pro XT, Phanteks P400a, 2x16GB DDR4-3600, EVGA RTX 3080 10GB dual fan, 2TB NVME SSD (1800MB/s) running Windows 10.
How to build and program such a thing??
See the description.
Awesome job. How do you configure and get the 3 screens to work?
MSFS now supports multi-monitor setup. Just setup the left one at -90 degrees and the right one at 90 degrees.
Would love to see your cad file but the link above is no longer valid.
Renewed the link. Have fun.

Looks like y our design files hit the access limit.
Try again now. It should be working.
What size 8020 do you use?
When you download and open my design you can print out a BOM with all the 8020 parts. Then you just order the stuff from the link I provided and they'll cut all of it for you. Easy peasy.
How much did it cost in average?
My budget is in the description.
how and where are all those 5 monitors connected?
There are three monitors connected to the video card. The two G1000 monitors are actually iPads running Simionic.
Can I come over and play?
Sure. I live in the Indy area.
Wow! Very well done. Where did you get the 6mm PVC panels? Amazing.
Meyer Plastics, Indianapolis. There's info in the description.
Apparently money wasn't a concern.
I investigated all options to obtain a side-by-side closed cockpit. This was the least expensive, most practical way I could find.
Also I am unable to get access to your files can you please help me.
You now have access.
What size is the main monitor?
75 inch
The link to your file is expired
Try downloading again. It should work now.
Simionic the crashionic😂
Cost?
See description below video.
that pc looks like its about to explode
I know. Now I just need the music from Close Encounters...
FAKE💣
Why do you say fake???
Fake? Well, it is a simulator. For the real thing, I own a 1975 PA32-260.
Симулятор хороший. Только нельзя нагрузки передать. Но вот повышенную температуру в кабине можно. Если полностью закрыть её
