Who wins this round? Android Auto or Apple CarPlay?
Nice montage
until waze shows up in the cool split screen android auto wins
Android for sure. That Calender in IOS looks really usefull though!
Android auto
Android Auto
Android auto in my car goes from light to dark depending on the time of day
B Blackwell so does CarPlay. But now you can permanently set it to dark mode
@@daryltang17 I believe you can set Android auto to always have light or dark mode in the app settings before plugging your phone into your car
Its a setting in the actual android auto app before you plug it in. So yes, you can force dark mode.
My Android Auto uses the sensors of the car to determent if its day or night, so its turns dark in tunnels and so on.
B Blackwell carplay for me switches to dark mode when I turn on my lights which is neat because it makes sense that way
AA has auto dark mode through the head unit
This.. it auto switches based on weather or not your headlights are on.
They are talking about white mode not dark mode...but I'm unsure if that's what you meant as I don't know what AA does.
@@Sonickrunch AA is Android Auto. Not the other type of AA. There is a built in setting which allows the theme do go dark (night mode) based on the status of the headlights. My Pioneer avh2330 has it and since I wired the headlight in wire to the unit it knows when I turn my headlights on so it automatically goes into dark mode. Or if you have your phone set up to go into dark mode by itself then the head unit will do it at well. From what I've read it's an option available on all units fitted AA capability.
@@oda0111 No i know AA is Android Auto, I just don't use it, so I can't say whether it has a "white mode" or not.
Day and Night mode settings are in the AA app settings on the phone, options are always on for either or automatic
This is so "my dad can beat up your dad" that it's hilarious.
No he can't, they have the same dad...
Human Being Friends from school or college
Android auto does have dark mode. My car turns it on at like 6pm
How do you set it up?
@@Rebelliousivan on most new cars (or my '18 golf r at least) dark mode comes on automatically when the headlights are on, and when they're not, it uses the light mode. Kind of annoying as dark mode contrast is so low, and I use my headlights pretty much all the time.
@@Rebelliousivan It's not a setting in AA. In the phone settings under display you can select "Night Mode" which causes a lot of your apps, including Google Maps (either with or without Android Auto) to go into night mode (black background). You can either do it manually or as scheduled (Sunset-Sunrise or custom). Most phones have it automatically set up to come on at night.
@@a27rocks It is a setting in the maps itself. Default is automatic which either uses the clock settings and is based on sunrise/sunset, or for a car that has native support it can be set to toggle based on whether the lights are turned on. Or you can just manually pick one or the other. It's not paired to the general OS theme unless specified.
@@SaladFingers_ I didn't see that. Where is that setting in the menu?
One cool thing in ios13 is if you have a home kit garage door opener it will show a button to open and close it when you get near to your house.
Google can do it if your garage door are connected to Google home
Android does that since jellybean
Designer Ivan android auto didn’t even exist then lol
@@tomwilsonn
He's talking about smartphones.
Paul Jamieson it’s the best
i love seeing you two interact and laugh at eachother in the friendliest ways.
I think Apple car play turns Yuri on almost as much as prowling around town
Lol 🥁
Almost as much as recording satellite radio
It just seems like if you live in the apple universe you'll be happy about Apple CarPlay and if you live in the Google universe you'll be happy about Android Auto. I don't think that either of them have it totally worked out yet. Also, really nice outro!
bkdrummer very true. In my Colorado, when I used android auto, it would freeze every few minutes and crash. But carplay didn’t. They both have their quirks. Depends on the car, the phone, the chord.
Plus they tested the map in a weird spot where only a small amount of people are compared to their millions of inland US and CA viewers.
I like both. Neither win
Can also be affected by the head unit in your car itself i.e. How good the touch screen is and what functions it supports. Which affects the functionality of both Carplay and Android
@Brimz why?
HOW? with that horrible Apple Maps... Apple should just give up
No way to avoid toll roads on apple maps is barbaric lol. How do they not have such a basic feature
4:19 that is the "you're my best friend but man are you annoying when you're right" clapping was gold :)
Android Auto does directions from calendar entries too, so for example, I had an entry for 5pm with a proper address and a reminder for it at 4:30pm, it pops up automatically in android Auto notifications and gives you an option for directions
Same with emails... whenever I buy movie tickets online and it's getting close enough to the time a screen pops up to tell me it's time to go to the theater and it gives me the option to navigate there (with either waze or google maps).
That's under the "bell" icon which is for notifications, right?
@@brett2396 yes the bell will show upcoming events, directions, and other app notifications if enabled for Android Auto. I've had for example a Seattle Mariners game that was saved to my calendar, with a address, and it was ready to navigate to it based on the event and the time frame of the alert (I.E> you have it 1, 2, 3, 4 hours alert before the event begin). So in the defense of Google they are leaning more on the assistant which is there thing anyway to help you control your life and not need visual of an application to do this. If it helps or not is another question. Lol.
@@AustinFerguson well having the option to see or hear your notifications and everything else is great.
@@bambamxr yes that's the best
you can change your voice settings in android auto to different accents mine is set to australian :D
Australian G Assistant sounds like Australian Siri tbh
I have singer John legend as mine.
Still sounds robotic compared to Apple's new AI in Siri.
Ya my Siri has been British for literal years now. I’d love to have snoop dogg for that though 😂😂
You like the Australian accent?
There is a dark mode on android auto and its by default with your cars auto headlamps it changes to dark and light mode acc to headlamps of your car
Try out!👍
Android Auto is a definite winner 🎉
This. I own a GTI autobahn with the fancy tech. It defaults to dark mode with headlights on and light mode with lights off. You can set it to just do one or the other.
CarPlay does the same.
Android Auto does actually put the address of stuff on your 📅 up on the screen. You can select it to navigate there.
The old version did, but the new version depicted in the video removed this feature, which I greatly miss.
You still get the recommendation in the search box of Google maps 🤷♂️
@@cvr24 I still get it on screen in the notifications panel
To show your calendar events on Android Auto press on the Notification bell button
Yep, navigation to calendar's event address is there since day one. AA used to show events on main screen but with new UI they are hidden in notification screen.
You guys should do an update video. With iOS 14 and android 11 they have both changed some for the better!!
Android does have a light mode, even on the old version.
Another new item for CarPlay is that you can now use one thing on the phone without disrupting the car play screen. This is new and not sure if Android Auto has that or not but its handy when your passenger wants to do something on phone while navigating etc. For example the passenger can DJ while the lap stays on the screen.
I've had both recently. I miss having Google Assistant at the ready to answer anything, it's so much more powerful than Siri. I love the look and application integration that Apple has been working on. I love the share eta option in Apple Maps. It sends multiple text messages updating the person I'm sharing with on my eta.
Google maps can share eta as well, and allows the person to creepily track your entire path. So no real need for multiple texts.
I have used both in my car and CarPlay is just so much easier to navigate while driving.
Android Auto allows more customization, but the buttons are smaller and harder to read. If you use Apple maps + Apple’s calendar app (you can sync your google calendar with Apple’s for the sake of CarPlay) then Carplay integrates flawlessly.
I've been using Waze with Android Auto and it integrates with my calender perfectly with destinations to my appointments... (Road hazards and police reporting is also better)
Android mode does have a "light mode", it's just that the default setting switches between dark and light depending on the time of day and whether you drive bellow bridges etc when it gets dark.
As soon as they said “Hey Siri” my phone heard it and I was like wtf 😂
Qusain Shirazi same with me lol
Qusain Shirazi bruh Same😂😂
One more bonus point for CarPlay 13 that will be more pronounced in the future is the support of multiple displays and irregular shaped displays. In other words, if the car can tell the phone that it has two/three displays of such and such dimensions, CarPlay can then project to those displays too, so you can have maps in you gauge screen and music in your main infotainment screen (for example). Also, cars with irregular shaped displays can tell that to CarPlay now and the view will be adjusted to that to make the most of it.
Looking forward to the iOS 14 vs Android 11 video 😀
There is auto "brightness" (day/night) in android auto, you can choose which device (car or smartphone) controlling to switch mode day/night. You have to just get access to advanced settings by clicking few times the "version" in the settings.
"stahp callin' me"
-Mahk
Yuri, you turn on Avoid Tolls or Highways on your phone before plugging it into the car. It’s in the Apple Maps setting on your phone.
*scrolls through time line*
“And I ooop”
As an Android Auto user I have seen major updates. It is cool to see all of the development on the Apple side as well.
These reviews are so silly yet I have been waiting for this review for a while. I finally got apple car play in my car. It thought about replacing my radio but ended up just getting a new car.
R.I.P. Apple CarPlay vs Android Auto video ?? - 2020
Finally got Android Auto enabled on my Jaguar XF, absolutely loving it so far! So good in widescreen mode. I just wish I could go full screen on the navigation.
This is genuinely one of my favorite series on UA-cam
Android auto DOES have light mode. In developer settings you can adjust screen light and how it is switched by (light sensor of car or light sensor of phone).
And it has been for like a year now.
Yes but not everyone wants to tinker around in the developer settings
This is probably the most entertaining thing on your channel!
I'm only watching this because of Yuri and Jakub. I don't even have a car ...
Google Maps is better but I switched to Apple Maps because I looked into my Google Maps history & Google kept every place I’ve been going back years. There is no setting in Google Map to not track it. The shortest time you can set it is to tell Google where you’ve been is 3 months.
Not quite professional: you can personalize the widgets in car play, you can synchronize your google calender in the ios calender app
Surprised no Porsche footage in your compilation finale. GT2RS review/Track day is one of my faves on this channel :D
As far as I know CarPlay is more widespread. Dunno any cars which wouldn't support CarPlay if they support Android Auto, while vice versa exists (BMW)
Caroftime - a couple of cars will be running Android natively on the car, but I suspect they are aware of Apple users and will be either integrating CarPlay or an app to allow Apple Users to use all the features as well.
Biggest update BY FAR for Carplay is that I can do stuff on my phone and NOT HAVE CARPLAY SWITCH THE DISPLAY.
My phone before IOS 13: "Oh you want to have your passenger look something up on the phone or pull up a text while you're using the navigation? I guess I'll switch the app that's displayed on Carplay as well!"
My phone now: "Locked in, sir."
Android Auto has a light and dark mode.. you might need to go into the developer mode to change it from automatic though.
Yes, but it looks like he is already in the "Try the new Android auto".
The option on CarPlay is permanent dark mode..
@@daryltang17 So does AA - www.xda-developers.com/android-auto-redesign-dark-theme/ , unless it depends on the manufacturer? Works for me, but I've got a Pixel 2
Android Auto has a light mode but it's in the developers option! You have to tap a bunch of time on Android Auto version (deep down in Android Auto settings) then become a developer, and a new option in the top right will appear. From there you can set dark mode to be based on car lights, on clock or always.
As a long time Apple fan, I bought a One Plus phone as a second phone, mostly for android auto 😂
JP Bredenkamp 💀
My friend a while back purchased a new car with Android Auto and Car Play. He's an iPhone user and I'm an Android user myself. We were both surprised at how much better Android Auto was. I'm getting ready to install a Kenwood headunit myself in my car with wireless Android Auto.
Good video. I use a headunit with wireless AA and Pixel phone. In terms of usability, I think it can compete with a good number of OE setups. The one thing I would like to see added is a full screen mode, but it is still better than the old UI in terms of viewable space.
Can we just mention the outro, truly amazing
Hey guys! I love your show! Great comparison as usual! I do have one question though concerning Android Auto, while using google maps, i can't seem to pinch to zoom on my suzuki jimny. Is it something i have to fix in my settings? Is it an update? Or maybe just the screen is not compatible with multiple types of gestures? Thanks. Keep it up!
Bro when i turned on my 2017 Hyundai Elantra on and plugged in my phone 4 days ago and saw the new interface. I was like 🤩yoooooo
OMFG that B-roll footage at the end was AMAZING! I have a smile ear to ear!
Dark/Lite mode can be activated on Android.
Might inside the developer options but it's possible!
Another new version of Android Auto has been announced. You guys need to do a round 6 for sure. I want to see it so bad. You guys do such a great review on all the features for both sides.
The outtro was epic!!
Thank you guys for continuing this incredible work. The general public is all the better for it 😂
Can you put a UA-cam poll up soon asking people who won this round?
It was obvious that android auto won.
I feel like the big floating head in the sky from Rick and Morty should have started the video by saying, "SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT."
It doesn't matter because I have 2019 Q5 which does not have a touch screen. shame!
Buy an aftermarket one? There some really good ones out there
Calendar on CarPlay is very useful, but overall, AA is still better functionality. But competition keeps them both improving, so lets keep this rivalry going!
Waze is better than Apple Maps and it works well on both systems.
Right? No idea why they aren't doing Waze too.
Waze is way better on apple carplay than android auto.
Waze is better than Google maps and Apple maps, these guys have no idea what they’re talking about.
Android Auto clearly wins this round! As an iOS user I’m hopeful that their claim that maps is being majorly updated and rolled out via iOS updates through the end of this year and on is true. I think this will help in finding relevant POIs that aren’t 2000 miles away.
Thank goodness us iOS users can still download google maps since it performs excellently (at least not on CarPlay)
You realize apple maps has a 3D satalite view right?
Yeah its kinda annoying having carpplay demonstrated by someone who by their own admission doesn't even know how to use apple maps (he said he deleted it).
@@lunchbox9991 Yeah, he talks a lot of smack for Apple, but uses Google maps and calendar. He's already halfway to being an Android dude.
i don't think the satellite view is on carplay though otherwise you'd see it advertised around
You can enable satellite view in mobile app but not in CarPlay.
You can avoid toll roads too
You can do route options with Apple maps, on the phone before connecting to car play. A lot of the stuff apple maps does can be done on the phone. Car play is merely used for Navigation which works fine for most people. If you want route options use your phone it’s not hard
I literally just noticed the update today in my 2019 Acura RDX. I use Waze anyway so other than the updated UI, works the same!
You mean for the carplay? Or do they finally have android auto now?
orange vs apple For Apple CarPlay. Not sure if the car updated to have Android Auto yet. Doesn’t apply to me anyway.
This is the car review everybody needs but nobody did.
Uploaded 8 seconds ago, ultra ooft. I'm early. That's what she said.
Guys you’re the top! So entertaining and fun. I wish the best for you two.
“Pinch to Zoom” requires the LCD touch controller to support multitouch. It is not software related only. 🤷♂️
It doesn't work on any car with apple carplay 😂
TheStraightPipes yeap, that’s because most car makers use resistive touchscreens, not capacitive (need it for the multitouch experience). To unify the experience, they decided to disable the feature completely until capacitive LCDs are standardized. 🤓
@@CrissPons Well you're going to be waiting for a while there buddy. 😴
kayotic321 🤦♂️😭
You don't need to be able to click on an address on AA with the calendar reason being, when you have an appointment it will automatically show up on your AA at which point all you do is start the trip ( notification of address and appointment varies on the setup you have for calendar notification)
Android is king. Unfortunately most of somewhat decent carmakers adopt slowly.
watching you guys from quebec keep it up happy to see you stumbled over
"so much stuff I can't even decide the winner"... oh.. let me check. Apple won twice. with a better voice, and the calendar integration. The Apple Calendar, that you don't use, with the address that you were unable to find on Apple maps. Yeah.. sounds like a pure win. I will even skip the point that displaying calendar while (!) you are driving is pointless, as you are already on your way, which means you know your destination, and you could (and even should, to avoid unnecessary distraction while driving) spend 10 seconds on setting up your destination.
Used Android Auto on a 2020 TLX yesterday, and it showed my upcoming meeting in my Google calendar (by pressing notification bell) along with a direct link to directions through Google Maps. Another point for team Android!
Not really, since not only does Apple's calendar already do that, and has for years in CarPlay, you can also subscribe to a google calendar in apple calendar, and then all, your google cal appts will show up in apple calendar. Since you can't do that the other way around, carplay solidly wins that one.
lmao the fact that people who claim Apple > Android but then delete Apple Maps and download Google Maps. I download absolutely ZERO Apple apps on Google. :)
Brandon Bousquet - If you use Google Maps, you are an idiot. It’s either Apple Maps or Waze, Google Maps is just Waze lite.
You guys are the best. You helped me a lot on deciding my car purchase
When the Apple guy needs to use google stuf, it's a done deal.
In Apple maps you can avoid tolls and highways
1.go to settings
2.go to map table
3.click driving and navigation
4. There is it
Wow. Must not be distracting at all to do that while driving
I just said you could....
Last time I was this early I was on time to work
Great video guys! I remember the last video like it. I put a really nice Sony 7" Android Auto headunit in my 2001 Miata and it's amazing how modern the car feels.
I've never had an issue with Apple Maps lol
You should've mentioned that music will start automatically when Android auto is launched (if the user want it to). That's a big plus in my opinion.
CarPlay does that too
@@mrniz461 Oh, I didn't know that, that's great though.
Also, LOVE THE ENDING
yeah sure, light theme and calendar is great, but the most important point for this kind of device is to be a good GPS.
Now i’m stuck with how deep is your love in my head
Missed opportunity to Rick Roll subscribers lol.
PSA, you can set Android auto to light mode if you enable developer options within the Android auto app on your phone.
The best apple car feature for me in iOS 13 is that I can have an app on the phone while Waze stays on the head unit. Also invoking Siri in iOS 13 does not turn the screen black anymore. Regards from Buenos Aires and yes Apple maps sucks here too! ;-)
Did anyone else’s Siri go off when he said hey Siri?
1671 gaming yes 😂
I got really excited about the new car play but it was for a feature you missed. Finally now Apple allows you to have 2 apps open at once. So now I can have my maps app open on the car screen and also have Spotify open on my phone (which is in a holder next to the radio) I get both my music and directions.
However after seeing this I think it’s best I move to android lol
Apple Map, it is a no brainer. Google is destroying your privacy.
This x100. even if Apple maps didn’t exist I would still never use anything made by Google that can be so intrusive.
You say that like Apple doesn't also sell your information...
You should not believe Apple's marketing, they are worse than Google when it comes to privacy. Apple has cultivated a myth around their company that's simply not true, but many people still believe their lies.
Fun fact : Apple was rejected by Mercedes and BMW to co-develop their electric car because privacy issues, Apple wanted to record everything that happens in the car.
Here is another fun fact : www.theverge.com/2019/8/23/20830120/apple-contractors-siri-recordings-listening-1000-a-day-globetech-microsoft-cortana
If you want privacy, throw away all electronics and move to some cave. Everyone is spying on you, even your smart TV and smart fridge does it.
One thing I dislike extremely on Android Auto is when I want to play music, I have to say, " On Google play music" at the end of it tries to play it on UA-cam...................................
Apple keeps changing the user interface instead of actually innovating. I truly appreciate the new faster processors and bigger batteries with sturdier designs, but stop changing the way people unlock phones, type, and navigate web browsers for asinine reasons.
If you have a location set for a calendar event for Android auto, it'll pop up as an option when you choose to navigate because it knows you got it coming up.
No wonder why I don’t like the beard guy.. he is an Android user!
I want to point out. The reason the Google Assistant voice doesn't sound as clear as Siri is because AA plays notifications and the voice through the "call" channel, on the stereo that I have it allows it to mix in all Google Assistant prompts with audio from any other source including my boyfriends iPhone. He can play his music while my phone handles navigation. Siri plays it through the main channel and this mixing barely ever works with CarPlay properly.
Android auto is the best
These are your best videos. Did apple not claim to invent pinch to zoom hahaha
at least Apple tries 🤷♂
The new iOS 13 version of carplay is pretty nice just for the fact that I can have map directions up AND my music on the same screen.
To be fair android did have that first, but I totally agree
I think its a tie because both systems has improved a lot, as an apple user who owns iPhone 7, Apple Watch, and MacBook Pro
Missed a very important update for CarPlay, which is allows passengers to use phone normally while not changing what’s on CarPlay screen.
This is HUGE
Just FYI, Google maps and Waze will be available in dashboard mode in CarPlay eventually, it's on them to update their apps with the new dashboard API.
