Million-dollar EV maker Rimac says their next car won’t be electric. Unsold Teslas are filling up parking lots. And big automakers like Mercedes are canceling future EVs. Is the electric future dead? Let’s find out!
EV sales took a big hit at the beginning of 2024, but bybrids got more popular. Are hybrids replacing EVs? The real story is more complicated than that, of course. In this video we talk about how EVs and hybrids went from novelty to commonplace, and if the tide is turning for hybrids. Includes the GM EV1, Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, and of course Tesla Model S.

Can anyone guess what transmission is behind me?
Hydrogen engine hybrid gearbox?
Is it from an EV? 😜
Jesus christ. Thought "wtf now justin has left donut (or at least moonlighting for another channel)" then realized this isn't justin. It's his brother and they pretty much have the exact same jobs 😅
And face, and voice
Host James Freeman
Wtf, I thought that was the same host from donut until i read ur comment😂😂😂
Justin got lost :O
imgine if James hosted bigtime, all the donut fans would lose it because they thought Justin left.
@chokeeweebee so Justin is also on this Channel too. Lol this is the new thing, everyone is cross-channeled
Usually a huge fan but it feels like Justin is talking to a brick wall 🤐
Every shot in this video with Justin was unwatchable! James was good though.
They need to move the teleprompter
One of the problems with full EV over hybrid at least near where I live in the Northeast is that thanks to the housing crisis more people are living in apartments than houses which makes home charging nearly impossible. combine that with a very low number of charging stations and no one wants a pure EV.
That’s an issue for the (local) government to solve. The Netherlands has many street chargers. At one point, they had more than 50% of all chargers in Europe (and it only has a population of 17,5mln).
Charging is no issue over here. We live in a flat and densely populated country that’s suits EVs more than other countries and still EV sales have dropped here too.
The main reason is price, I think. EVs are significantly more expensive than ICE vehicles.
Chicken v egg
Here in Denmark, charging stations are also everywhere. You got to get your government to do something in the US.
As a Tesla owner, I agree with this. I live in a house with a two car garage with a Level II charger, so owning one is not a problem. I also just road tripped the Tesla from NY to FL. Tesla Superchargers were not a problem, in fact with all the driver automation, great infotainment, trip planning, power, ability to keep HVAC running, etc. it was one of the most comfortable cross country trips I have taken. The inconvenience came when the hotel we were at for 10 days did not have working level II chargers. Same as apartment dwellers! In addition to that, the USA outlet choice versus Europe I think bites us with this. Most of the world uses 240 volt outlets, but North America choose 120 volt. It even hurts the performance of our vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, etc. but it’s not as noticeable. Where it is noticeable is outlet charging in a pinch. IMO, in Europe you could outlet charge much more realistically in a pinch versus the USA, which is virtually useless if you drive more than 20 or 30 miles in a day.
@@billm47645 Normal European outlets can charge with only 3.7kW.
Most EV owners with a driveway will have a 3 phase 16A 11kW charger installed.
You can have 240V outlets (for washing machines for example), can’t you?
At 16A that would still only give you the 3.7kW.

This isn't overdrive, it's not bad, but it's not overdrive 😑
It is a shame, but it is a transitional period.
They are running on a limited budget so they can keep making videos, it's literally just a handful of people now.
Wtf is going on!? Why is Justin on Mansels channel?
nothing against it :)

I updated my prius 2007 into plug-in hybrid with the latest 20 kWh Nissan Leaf batteries. It's still running strong after 17 years! Incredible! Best car ever !
Someone famous once said, "we didn't step out of the stone age because we ran out of stone." We are not going to leave the oil age because we will run out of oil, the electric age needs to be as good, if not better, for more people to get on board.
Wow, hi Justin, didn't expect you here :D
Dude, you mentioned that crappy Ford SUV from 2005 but failed to mention that in 2004 Lexus released the acclaimed RX400h which finally brought a powerful hybrid drivetrain to passangers vehicles.
If the only way to interact with my car is a tablet I’m not buying it. Give me proper switchgear
The thumbnail with the Prius crushing the GM EV is way better than the other one I saw.
I have nothing against EV, especially in Motorsport... but I think Synthetic Fuel are much more appealing than EVs. If you can have Synthetic Fuel + Hybrid, it will be the best combo
I’m so confused, is this or is this not the guy from donut 😭 they even have the same voice but I’m pretty sure that guy’s name is justin
James is Justin's twin brother.

unsold Teslas filling lots is the biggest cap I've ever heard
Amazing the Model S had 4x the battery of the Leaf and got 4x the range!
3:05 I am sooo happy to see the CityEL represented as example for 80s electric cars because the concept is still by far currently the cheapest way to get around and was available to the public (in europe/germany) until around 2008!
Great analysis on the rise of hybrid vehicle sales. As the industry navigates these changes, it would be interesting to explore how advancements in semiconductor technology could further support EV development.
I love my sonata limited hybrid over 50 mpg so far and features are great $24,000 carmax
I LOVE the comment section, it's like matrix is breaking :D
But for real, great job hosting first video on this channel James! Hope to see you in more and more videos to come! (get yourself a prompter, even cheap one where you use your tablet is fine)
edit: Tiernan is also here?? LETS GOOO!
Justin is here!????
What about the chevy volt???
They mentioned the Spark, which (in Korea at least) isn't electric, so I'm wondering if they got mixed up. Over here, the volt is an old version of electric car they don't sell anymore. The newer Bolt is selling well. Kind of amusing though, as Volt & Bolt are spelled the same in Korean.
The biggest selling EVs here though are the Kia EV6 and the Hyundai ioniq 5. But EV sales here are huge!
The resources to make evs and to the demand for them is too much and we have not enough materials for the batteries. That's why prices for evs are ridiculously high.
I think EVs are here to stay, but they won't be the only kind of powertrain in the road, with internal combustion still being a looooooong time with us, just using e-fuel/biofuels and with some degree of electrification.
biofuels destroys engines, it should go away.
I think being terrible, pointless and overpriced is killing EVs.
Manufactures starting with their biggest luxury vehicles and making them electric is pointless.
An EV truck or giant SUV is dumb. Wrong application of the technology.
Evs are the most sketchy cars of this generation. If you run out of battery, you run out of battery. While if you run out of gas in a hybrid, there is still some electricity to drive to the gas station.
@@Radicaltimmythat’s dumb logic, if you manage to run out of battery well you are most likely the type of person to run out of gas also.
@Michael-pi8ps I think you forgot that hybrids have electricity and when you run out of gas, the nearest gas station is 20 to 30 miles away where you ran out of gas.
Nailed it
Idk what the commenters' problem with Justin's delivery is, seems very engaging to me. Loved the video. Lower production value for sure but that's definitely not his fault haha
Didn’t know James from Donut is here now
Justin is on Donut, James in this video is his twin.

Holy sh*t. Donut cloned Justin and started leasing him out!
Whats just doing on Overdrive
He finally sold the channel or what?
No it hasnt been sold.

I like the thumbnail, very interesting movie
Mom look I wrote a script for a video!
Wait what?? Is that Justin?
Are you saying that consumer demand is dictating the market and not government mandates 😮. We are all shocked!
Firstly, Its great to see Justin here. I love your work mate. That said, please let the man do a bit more free form work and not read straight from a teleprompter, Its not his specialty apparently. Free Justin!
Bro, you leave donut too?
If a headline asks a question, the answer is no.
Ayo what's Justin doing over here. Hi justin
For me, and I suspect for many, it's too soon to rely on a pure EV. The infrastructure just isn't there yet. But a rechargeable plug in hybrid is the best of both worlds. In a pinch you can use gas. And with very minor modification a hybrid can be used as a generator in the event of a power outage. You let the gas engine run on idle and it can charge batteries that can run your house if need be. That could be a very useful feature if you live somewhere with a fragile power grid.
Ai thumbnails look naff 😂
1:16 the Billion people living without electricity aren’t buying ANY new car so it makes no sense to include them in any study.
Automakers need to focus on making affordable EVs which don’t prioritize the 0-60 times or horsepower. I switched from ICE to EV last year and yes, range anxiety was a concern then, but isn’t any more. It may take a while, but society desperately needs to move away from burning fuel for general transportation, and we need to do it 20 years ago.
TWIN BROTHER
Waiting for Toyota new generation engine
So they jumped more than 6% then drop ONE PERCENT and thats considered BAD???? OMFG corporations are ridiculous
No, you just can’t do math. They went up TO that percentage of overall car sales and dropped 1% of overall car sales. That’s a double digit decline in EV sales of about 16%.
@@David-lr2vi yes I understand that, I'm saying that is ridiculous 🙄
@@David-lr2vi a decline from the 6% not anywhere near ome from the original .1%
@@16driver16 A 16% decline in EV sales is pretty big. If that happened in a standalone business no doubt they would be firing people and downsizing. Most car manufacturers make both ICE and EV models so they will just pivot back to ICE and hybrids.
@David-lr2vi if a business lost 16% sales in 2024 and they still had 1000 times the sales of 2022 youth ink they're in such bad shape they need to fire people??? If it were a standalone business it'd have 100 sales in 2022, 100,000 in 2023 and 870,000 in 2024 so it's a failure in 2024 but not 2022 or 2023? That's stupid
People will be comparing Hybrids vs EV all the time, claiming how hybrid will kill the EV in forums just like how android will kill the iPhone. Meanwhile the simple nokia phone / pure ICE cars are the real victims being murdered by EV and hybrid combo. No one will admit to buying a pure ICE car once the hybrid and EV bro's boast about fuel savings and acceleration.
26st like is me
As a hybrid owner, f hybrids. I wouldve bought electric if they were affordable back when i bought it.
We need an internal combustion engine
I don't care how I use my car "on average"
For the last 3 years I was driving alone for university everyday, sometimes taking 1-2 friends with me on a way back home. But then I was regularly doing over 250+km trips (one way) with no option to recharge a car, 3 passengers and full trunk. That plus regular trips to a local track (100+ km away) with full cargo capacity of a car used (if we weren't driving with all seats taken, rear seats would be folded to accomodate more junk in a trunk).
As someone who ain't rich enough to live in a house with garage, home charging ain't for me. And even if I had this option, EV wouldn't work for this 10% of a time. And that 10% is crucial.
first like 2nd comment 2nd view
As you say at the end, it's just Tesla sales dropping, not EVs overall. I think people are put off by Elon Musk. I certainly wouldn't want to give him my money.
I drive a 2019 Ioniq HEV. Advertised as 75mpg but I regularly hit 80+. That thing is a forever car for me. 650 miles on a tank. Electric just isn’t cost effective
Ev's will go down as the automotive industries bigest scam/flop. The people who are willing to buy(and can buy) is a minority. Combustion will be here for years to come. I regret buying an EV.
For EVs to at least make an attempt to come back, they need hot swappable standardised batteries that everyone can try and develop and doesn't write the car off when they are knackered.
Like they’ve been doing with BATTERIES for decades right?!
Swappable batteries is a dumb idea. The only time that works is for small vehicles.
The time spent “hot-swapping” a battery is basically the same amount of time to charge one. Except now you need a storage facility for all the extra batteries
@@Michael-pi8ps you do know that it already happens in some countries don't you?
@@alxgu198 exactly.
@@dannyseville2543 a singular manufacturer in a single country does it and less than 20% of their swapping stations are breaking even.
Nio has a 2% market share in China, so barely anyone is using them anyway

Well I mean last time some hybrid bro tried to take on my Tesla … Lost … Sooooo … Nope! 2015 and still rocking like a boss.
ha ha, snicker snicker...a boss. ok
People are buying a new EV, trying it out, realizing it's worse than a regular petrol or hybrid car, for multiple reasons, and going back to regular reliable petrol and hybrid cars.
I want an EV but I really dont want to give Musk my money. My Coworker has a Model 3 with the automated driving. It is pretty impressive.
All the other manufacturers are dropping the ball on only making high end luxury EVs. That is why I have not bought one. Could I afford a Polestar 4 sure, do I want the monthly payment no.
Ideally I want a Mazda 3 EV or Miata EV. I know sacrilege, but I dont care what petrol enthusiast think.
If the rumored Tesla hatchback comes out I will probably buy that. In the grand scheme of things me giving Musk 25k - 35k wont even register with his wallet. LOL
While not wanting to give Musk your money makes sense, I’ve accepted that regardless of manufacturer they’ve all done some heinous things.
Tesla is probably the most above board automaker simply due to the fact that they’ve not been around long enough to do anything crazily harmful
@@Michael-pi8psThis is true and why I am hoping Mazda gets on it. Too bad the Japanese leadership are even further behind than US automakers. Of course Japan has amazing public transportation so they are not as car centric as the US.
If I got an EV, Tesla wouldn't be top of my list. I'd get an Etron GT, a Taycan, or an i5/i7. The Germans have done it best, so far
