On the studio version he starts out low in baritone, rises to a mid-range voice, then shoots all the way up to the fifth octave in tenor, and spends a lot of the song way up there. It’s unreal.

When he says "I only love you when I'm down, but I'm down all the time" he's acknowledging how messed up he is, but it's all he has to offer.
