  • The world hasn't seen much of Mary Margaret O'Hara since her singing debut on her album 'Miss America'. That LP is considered by many to be one of the best of the 1990s. Here is a rare interview with the Canadian icon.

She is not weird. She is beautiful and unique and speaks like most of us think. She just doesn't put it through the bullshit filter like we all have to do so the world can get us. If we were all like Mary the world would be an amazing place.

She is very clever ... she thinks at a lightning-fast pace, and speaks just as fast. (For example, at 4:35 the interviewer stumbles over the word "effortlessly," and she puns "effort-more-ly" in a nanosecond. The she riffs on "penchant" sounding like "pawn shop." Lots of moments like that in this interview.) I had to stop & replay so many moments to catch her humor. Her train of thought moves so fast, that it's sometimes hard to catch a ride. I WISH I could think like she speaks!

Absolutely. I do that, maybe not as interesting but I feel for her when she says she needs to put a plug in it. I feel like that and now I have anxiety which makes it worse. But, looking at her and listening to her it doesn't seem like anything that I would want her to stop. I think she is fascinating and wonderful. Truly original and her voice is like an angel. Love her and only actually found her in September songs and had, HAD to hear more!

When she talks about "improvising inside the structure" (10:06 - 12:42) : "letting it happen as much as you make it happen - and sometimes more than you make it happen": I love how she is able to express these things that are almost impossible to put into words, which is why, I think she is one of the most accomplished singers Canada has produced. I often try to improvise unusual runs when I jam with other musicians - it's risky, but when it works, it is just wonderful. When it doesn't, well...

incredibly quick minded is our mary margaret. thoughts ping pong in and out of her mind at such a rate. it all makes sense though. so she communicates in an unconventional fashion. she's not nuts, just extremely gifted. which shows through of course in her singing style too. compelling to watch and listen to.

I feel nicely connected to someone through this. Mostly in the fact that you can see when she comes off to some as worrying too much about what she's saying for fear of being offensive or getting into trouble, it's more of a deep desire to express herself properly and not be misunderstood and I feel the same way.
She isn't worrying about peoples reactions, she just wants them to know who she REALLY is, and it takes effort and pure expression to communicate that.

She is kind of a nerd.

Watching this causes me to understand people who say they find me hard to follow sometimes. Thing is, I CAN rationally explain my thought processes and associations, but when I do, people seem MORE disturbed. I'm aware of the existence of B, but B often seems trite or dull, so I just go to C without mentioning B. :)

I'd love to meet her one day. She is a real person. I would love to meet her and talk to her. She reminds me of my mom. Down to earth and living on this earth for real. God loves you Mary Margaret. and so do I. And a lot of other people as well.

Her thoughts about/experience with Joyce's "Ulysses" makes perfect sense. I hope she knows, feels, how dearly her fans love her. She is a GEM. Flannery put it best: “Art never responds to the wish to make it democratic; it is not for everybody; it is only for those who are willing to undergo the effort needed to understand it.” ~ Flannery O'Connor, Mystery and Manners: Occasional Prose

I fell in love with MM when she was in the Lemon Twins (who may have been triplets!) with the Schmenge Brothers. She couldn’t hide or disappear, and her vocals were so great. But I totally identify with the way she wants to suppress “bad stuff” in public, but it keeps popping out anyway, like Whack-A-Mole….it’s like she’s afraid that if she says negative stuff from her childhood and career experiences she has to stop and put positive spin on it so it doesn’t jinx her. I used to do that myself, but realized it was poisoning me, and I went to a therapist instead. Unacknowledged bad stuff acts like poisons in your blood and makes you inert and very vulnerable. I’m glad she gave the host a really bad time, actually!

    • @Rustbukkit69
      @Rustbukkit69 8 років тому +1

+Jeremy Clapham Haha, I can see your confusion. Wanking in this context is a term generally associated with guitars. It's the act of 'noodling around' on the guitar in an unstructured or non pre-rehearsed manner. Basically, a free form improvisational guitar solo.
e.g. "I walked into the music store the other day but couldn't get any help for fifteen minutes because the store clerk was over in the corner wanking away on a new Les Paul that came in."

@@AnneAndersonFoxiepaws - Canadian here. The show in the clip is also a Canadian one. I'm sure it's more of a Canadian term than American. The term would be borrowed from you but in a less offensive sense, but with the same underlying meaning. We fully understand the term and sometimes use it as you would. In this case though, it would be a more polite way of saying someone is just dicking around on their guitar. Dicking around is also a common term used here in Canada.
"What were you doing last night?"
"Not much, just dicking around downtown with some friends."
      or
"Why haven't you cleaned up the living room yet? Stop dicking around and just get it done!"
