Negan's goals are more pragmatic, while Rick's goals are more idealistic; ultimately though, they both want the same thing. Negan simply has come to the conclusion that fear & a degree of focused savagery will ultimately save more lives. For him, free will and free choice is a luxury he has seen lead many to get themselves killed; at least without it, there is life & thus possibility. On the other hand, Rick wants more of a live-and-let-be life, where everyone is free to grow and prosper together in their own way; it is the more communal way to live, where everyone works together to fight back against the tide of chaos and savagery that now defines the world. Both views actually have a lot of merit, as well as flaws. Ultimately, Negan is correct; his way leads to less death. However, it is an oppressed life, reliant on a perpetual state of fear of a near-godlike leader to suppress people's darker impulses, in favor to a more comfortable stable life. It is a non-peaceful way to live. Rick's way though, gives people a sense of purpose, of individuality. It leaves them with a sense that they are fighting for what is right, and to rebuilt things for a better tomorrow. But though it is a good mentality, it is also less stable & obviously takes its tole on the individual, both mentally and in total dead. Just look at what has become of Carol and Morgan; the demons of their past actions do take their tole. Also, look Daryl's actions with the dumb truck, which kinda derailed a lot of Rick's plans; you think any of Negan's crew would so easily go against their leader that way? Ultimately, Rick's way has a slippery slope of becoming zealotry, which is liable to leave quite the body count in its wake, as well as leave people mentally exhausted. Which is the better way? Hard to say, really. But this scene does show that Negan, in many ways, is actually kinda of an anti-hero (akin to his fellow character Ozymandias in the movie Watchmen) versus an arch-villain.
Wow. You make a point. It really shows actual political structures and both their merits and their flaws. Negan's is more facist in that it relies on merit, structure, and control, and is ultimately successful, but removes free will. Rick is more republic in that it relies on individuality, loyalty, and freedom, and is also successful, but sacrifices control and cohesion.
Rick kept a lot of people safe, he lead a whole group, found the prison, made life, taught a community of weak people how to fight, etc. Shane would've got them all killed after the farm, even Lori and Carl.
Bigbrother3465 But just as one example.... How hard did Shane plead to Rick to let others even if it wasn't him(Shane) to go out on runs and what not? He told him you're losing your boy. Not saying Rick hasn't protected and led the group but Shane saw this coming.
ricky spanish Yeah, but Shane wasn't a team player, he would've done terrible things and cost many lives. I loved his character for who he was, but that's it.
Shane was horrible. He was selfish. If you think looking out for Carl and Lori didn't make him selfish, you need a wake up call. Cuz he literally only cared for what was "his". He was obsessed with Lori and Carl. Anything that stood in between him and those 2 was a threat. He killed Otis, he tried to kill Rick. And he always fell out with members of the group. The only thing he should've seen coming was his inevitable death. If you're not a team player, you don't live long in a apocalypse.
Old comment, I know. But i don't think that applies here. In a world like TWD, anyone's chances of survival are medium at best at any given moment. There's just too many ways someone could die. Shane being there couldn't have prevented the litany of ways Carl could've died, being bit, shot, a small wound that gets infected due to lack of medicine etc.
@Lucas Jardim how the fuck do you think Rick's able to watch them both 24/7, if Shane was in charge they would have died earlier. Shane was way to fucking aggressive
@@afk3957 I think Shane's heightened unpredictability back then was because his ego was clashing with Rick's; he constantly wanted to one-up him. I think he would've somewhat evened out as time went on if it got to be just him, Lori and Carl and the remaining Atlanta group. But post-season 4 Rick probably would've freaked Shane out
I hope to god Negan has same arc as his comic counterpart it would be great to see that he realizes he went crazy after his wife Lucille's death and see him and Rick work together in The Whisperer war
I cannot even imagine how many emotions Rick was going through in this scene. Not only is he still mourning his son's death, not only is he trying to keep his mind occupied and focused on beating Negan and The Saviors, but his own child's dying wish is that he makes peace with the man he hates so much. AND that very same man he hates is being the voice of reason here....Poor Rick.....
"...You failed, you failed as a leader and most of all, Rick, you failed as a father.... Just give up.... Give up because you have already lost" ... Negan is right.
he wasn’t right about the father part. rick is a great father his only problem is leaving all the time. he always left to go fight or do something and barely spent time with his children but he protected them and loved them, to bad he wasn’t their that one time to save carl for doing something stupid and end up getting bit
I've made a lot of mistakes in my life that caused me to hurt the ones I love the most and what Negan says right here 2:59 always struck a cord with me.
Moo Kz yes and he pretty much becomes a member of group in The Whisperer story arc he even has chance to take over The Whisperers and lead them against Rick but chooses to stay loyal to Rick's group
He wasnt tired nor he wanted to focus only on school. He actually bought a house in Georgia so he could actually film. He signed a contract for at least 3 more seasons before filming Season 8. He was fired due to Gimple's stupid decisions.
The dynamic between Negan, Rick and Carl is honestly great. Two people who hate each other more than anything but love/care greatly for the same person.
I wasn’t expecting this. After how awful the rest of this season has been, this episode was really good. Especially this scene. I’m actually hopeful the show will get good again
After tonights episode too I really hope they leave Negan alive I really want to see him realize the error of his ways and see him and Rick going to war together against Whisperers
I love this scene! It´s the first time that Negan shows emotions in a good way , I loved the connection between Carl and Negan and he cares about the little Judith now. All in all, I love that Negan has a heart for the Grimes´kids.
It’s interesting to hear people talk and defend both sides of this war. You can tell who would be on which side if this situation was real, and a similar scenario could be possible in the future (not talking zombies), but warfare.
I don’t get why people have sympathy for negan. I only watched till season 6 ending (when they met negan for first time). But damn, he was pure evil. Only psychopats can put so much joy in killing people. They should have tried taking him out that same moment. He is not worth living man :D
Negan not pure evil in comics Rick realizes this and keeps him alive after slitting his throat and getting satisfaction of defeating him of course but Negan has a total turn around you get his backstory that he was a family man who loved his wife dearly tho he did cheat and you guessed it her name was Luciel. But he's imprisoned for a few years it's supposed to be life but he gets out during The Whisperer war and fights for Alexandria with chance of taking over and leading a group to kill Rick but stays loyal
This scene proves why this show is amazing. Just like Andrew Lincoln said the fans have to be patient. The show is deeper and more profound than it has ever been. This season was amazing. From the military strategies to character depth the show is amazing.
2 years late with this comment but this shit made me cry because as much as Carl resented Negan in the beginning, there was some strange form of respect between the two, and Negan looked at Carl almost as if he was his own kid in some twisted way. The Carl and Negan dynamic honestly might've been one of my favorites from this entire show. He never wanted that kid dead.
{It's Røse} he means how many people Rick has killed, Negan only killed Rick and his group because his group was being threatened by Rick. Negan just wants to make the best society possible in the apocalypse. Rick is arrogant and ignorant and can’t compromise and work with Negan and his group because he is too stubborn and bloodthirsty. Even though Negan killed those people, the ones he killed would want Rick to make peace with Negan, even Glenn, Abraham, and Carl would
Ohh man don't get me started on the way this show has gone they screwed Carl big time all for what? the only reason Rick was away was to get the garbage people and their dead! All this so a certain someone is spared....
I am rewatching the series from the first time you hear about the saviors in mid season 6. I got to this episode last night and really love seeing moments like this again. Very entertaining, but it also it kind of shows you how to apply this in real life. As fun as it is for our egos to have an "Us vs Them", "we are good, they are evil" mentality...war just ends up being destructive for both sides. The last few episodes building up to this scene really show that there are no good people and bad people here. I love how the show never kept a simplistic plot of "good guys win". Negan has done lots of good and lots of bad, just like Rick. It reminds me of negan's line in the season 9 finale, "noone ever thinks they're the evil one".
This scene shows us that Negan has humanity, his emotions when he hears about Carl's death are just painful to see. You can tell Negan truly cared about Carl and showed remorse for Rick's loss and didn't want Rick to lose anyone else close to him.
What a beautiful scene. This represents the best of what TWD was capable of. I know that at the time, they set viewership records but this show deserved awards. Andrew Lincoln deserved an award. JDM deserved an award. I know that a lot of fans thought the savior war dragged on for too long but I really enjoyed the arc. I just wished they had included the fight between Jesus & Negans bodyguards. Negan: “why hasn’t one of my people killed you yet” Jesus: “because your people suck” Always loved that little exchange haha!
It’s scenes like this that I just want to keep seeing in this show negan is such a great character as well just telling him the harsh truth everything about this scene is great
the one thing these two had in common was carl and how much they both loved him. you can see it in negan's face and hear it in his voice. but rick is too angry and sad to hear it. and carl must have cared for negan since he just wanted them both to stop and work together.
They become close in comics not as close as Carl and Negan but they changed that but I hope they set that up. Than we can see both badasses taking down the saviors cause they haven't really showed it but Negan is BADASS and once he realizes he went crazy he becomes awesome in Whisperer fight
Damn looking back at this scene after learning about Lucille, makes Negan's speech so much different. Like he know that Rick lost the one thing he loved the most and he knows how that kills who you were, especially if it's your fault.
Well that's what I hope they're setting up Rick to be Negan's savior like comic. In comics after Rick slits his throat he has a doctor save him. And when Andrea and Maggie beg to execute him Rick says we save people we don't kill them than a few years down road Negan gets let out to help with The Whispers and becomes part of the group
0:29 and 1:29 to 1:38 Negan actually did care about Carl, so it really made him sad to hear he died. Andrew Lincoln and Jeffery Dean Morgan are both fantastic actors. They are both so perfect at showing whatever emotions their character has in the moment. Like here, their acting of sadness is flawless.
Rick is actually the protagonist, he doesn't enslaves people and he treats his group like a family unlike negan. Rick killed 60 of negan's saviour because they think they control the world
Sometimes when I just want to let out my tears I hold back, I simply look at this scene, and remember that even the bad guy can tell u the right things u don't want to hear.
This was the Negan we needed to see more from the beginning. Nuanced, conflicted, flawed. Not a good man deep down by any means, but not the monster he thought he had to become.
I honestly love negan as a villain. Like, idk. Something about the way he shows respect even to his biggest fuckin enemy. Like you can tell he really liked Carl and genuinely does respect Rick even though he knows they'll never be friends. He's an interesting character. I still think he needed to die though personally. So much pain and death caused by one man. Him not dying was kind of anticlimactic

Hard to say, really. But this scene does show that Negan, in many ways, is actually kinda of an anti-hero (akin to his fellow character Ozymandias in the movie Watchmen) versus an arch-villain.
Marco Stillo Clap clap clap GODAMN HOLD YOUR FIRE ITS CARL.
Excellent analysis.
Master Shake or live long enough to see your self become the villain
You should write a book about this show. Just maybe people would find it more entertaining than the actual show.
This is one of the best acted scenes in the entire show
Ikr
Rick failed in all the ways Shane tried to warn him about.
Pfft, they'd be dead back in season 3 if it was Shane xD
They should have done a flashback scene of Shane saying “I don’t think you can keep them safe”
Except Shane said that about Randal not Carl and Judith
@@kingdeweybeatz6127 keep Carl and Judith safe from Randle/any other person who may cause harm
Why tf would Shane care about keeping Randal safe, wtf?
Old comment, I know. But i don't think that applies here. In a world like TWD, anyone's chances of survival are medium at best at any given moment. There's just too many ways someone could die. Shane being there couldn't have prevented the litany of ways Carl could've died, being bit, shot, a small wound that gets infected due to lack of medicine etc.
Shane wouldn't have survived a milly second in this arc, negan would have killed his ass
"I don't think you can do it man, I don't think you can keep them safe." Shane, talking to Rick about protecting Lori and Carl
@Lucas Jardim how the fuck do you think Rick's able to watch them both 24/7, if Shane was in charge they would have died earlier. Shane was way to fucking aggressive
@Nicholas Davis i think it was stated that if shane was in the group wouldnt make it pass season3
@@afk3957 I think Shane's heightened unpredictability back then was because his ego was clashing with Rick's; he constantly wanted to one-up him. I think he would've somewhat evened out as time went on if it got to be just him, Lori and Carl and the remaining Atlanta group. But post-season 4 Rick probably would've freaked Shane out
@@ZenMonkeyGod I wonder how Shane would've reacted when Rick bit a huge chunk of Joe's neck out. 😅
When Rick said to Negan that Carl was dead, his heart dropped, showing to the audience that Negan really cared about Carl.
negan is my boy he speaks his mind i respect him as a villain or hero im happy they did not kill him off.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan HOLY SHIT! He keeps this show alive. Just all the subtleties he adds to Negan brings the character completely to life. Bravo.
I hope to god Negan has same arc as his comic counterpart it would be great to see that he realizes he went crazy after his wife Lucille's death and see him and Rick work together in The Whisperer war
Andrews and negans acting is fucking amazing.
@@aaronscott4984 IM READY FOR MY GODDAMN SKINSUIT!!
I though Negan's answer would be: You sure he's not under the dumpster?
Negan’s expression when he finds out Carl is dead best part of the scene it’s amazing how much he liked him
I cannot even imagine how many emotions Rick was going through in this scene. Not only is he still mourning his son's death, not only is he trying to keep his mind occupied and focused on beating Negan and The Saviors, but his own child's dying wish is that he makes peace with the man he hates so much. AND that very same man he hates is being the voice of reason here....Poor Rick.....
"My mercy prevails over my wrath" 🔥
Wonderfully said.
"...You failed, you failed as a leader and most of all, Rick, you failed as a father.... Just give up.... Give up because you have already lost" ... Negan is right.
Jeferson Franco
He still needs to protect judith and michonne
Weird... I was scrolling through the chat while watching the video and read this part right as I came across it 🤯😂
he wasn’t right about the father part. rick is a great father his only problem is leaving all the time. he always left to go fight or do something and barely spent time with his children but he protected them and loved them, to bad he wasn’t their that one time to save carl for doing something stupid and end up getting bit
Coming from a lunatic sociopath who couldn't even put down his dead wife lol
No reason for him to give up when he still has a whole community and his daughter
I've made a lot of mistakes in my life that caused me to hurt the ones I love the most and what Negan says right here 2:59 always struck a cord with me.
Rick won't kill him he is just going to beat him up and lock him up but Carl wasn't suppose to die he is alive in the comics
sokonmah9767 Well Scott Gimple has completely fucked up the show.
and Negan is taken out of the prison
Moo Kz yes and he pretty much becomes a member of group in The Whisperer story arc he even has chance to take over The Whisperers and lead them against Rick but chooses to stay loyal to Rick's group
They killed Carl in the show because the actor was tired of being in the show, he wanted to focus on school.
I can tell Negan is very sad about it anyone else
he should of been sad about it like two seasons ago lol
At this point Rick has told Negan "I'm gonna kill you" so many times that I just imagine Negan mocking him like the SpongeBob meme
I noticed negan cares about carl
I wasn’t expecting this. After how awful the rest of this season has been, this episode was really good. Especially this scene. I’m actually hopeful the show will get good again
After tonights episode too I really hope they leave Negan alive I really want to see him realize the error of his ways and see him and Rick going to war together against Whisperers
@@aaronscott4984 - Well you were half right
I love this scene! It´s the first time that Negan shows emotions in a good way , I loved the connection between Carl and Negan and he cares about the little Judith now. All in all, I love that Negan has a heart for the Grimes´kids.
This scene hit so many great emotions. From sadness, to anger, to awkwardness, and all culminating into pure malice.
Andrew deserves a damn Oscar for his performance as Rick. His delivery on “it wasn’t you” was chilling. His delivery in general as Rick was brilliant.
It’s interesting to hear people talk and defend both sides of this war. You can tell who would be on which side if this situation was real, and a similar scenario could be possible in the future (not talking zombies), but warfare.
The losing side is Negan, The side with love always wins, the side with good always wins, evil always loses period,
I don’t get why people have sympathy for negan.
NOBODY has sympathy for Megan Only EMPATHY
This scene proves why this show is amazing. Just like Andrew Lincoln said the fans have to be patient. The show is deeper and more profound than it has ever been. This season was amazing. From the military strategies to character depth the show is amazing.
2 years late with this comment but this shit made me cry because as much as Carl resented Negan in the beginning, there was some strange form of respect between the two, and Negan looked at Carl almost as if he was his own kid in some twisted way. The Carl and Negan dynamic honestly might've been one of my favorites from this entire show. He never wanted that kid dead.
neagens entire face changed when rick said that.. it’s like neagen cared so much about carl when he barely new him, carl was like a son he never had
Did you see the way Negan bonded with Judith. I've never seen Rick do that
Strangely will always be one of my favorite scenes of the show.
The first time we ever see any real emotion in Neegan's eyes...
this scene makes you wonder, maybe Rick the villain
GUY WITH INSOMNIA No,because he's the good one. Negan is the bad one because he "trys to save people" but he's actually killing people.
{It's Røse} and try to remember how many killed Rick
GUY WITH INSOMNIA rick is still alive
{It's Røse} he means how many people Rick has killed, Negan only killed Rick and his group because his group was being threatened by Rick. Negan just wants to make the best society possible in the apocalypse. Rick is arrogant and ignorant and can’t compromise and work with Negan and his group because he is too stubborn and bloodthirsty. Even though Negan killed those people, the ones he killed would want Rick to make peace with Negan, even Glenn, Abraham, and Carl would
Grant Paulsen ok I'm like the stupidest person on earth lol
Truly some of the most fantastic acting of our time. These guys are so underrated.
Shane was right In the end Rick couldn't protect them....
chris wong technically he wasn't. Carl was supposed to be the last man standing, but gimple's shitty decisions got Carl killed.
Ohh man don't get me started on the way this show has gone they screwed Carl big time all for what? the only reason Rick was away was to get the garbage people and their dead! All this so a certain someone is spared....
chris wong theyre* dumbass
A Dolphinler they're*
ツ45a well theres a difference between not know and not caring enough to put punctuation
It reminds me of negan's line in the season 9 finale, "noone ever thinks they're the evil one".
this was such a good scene. rick calling negan and telling him about carl shows how weak abd lost he is rn. negan feels sympathetic
If Rick and Negan worked together they would be able to accomplished a lot and I think that will happen in season 9
That's what I'm hoping happens I want to see that arc happen on the big screen cause thats exactly what happens in comics
Sucks it didn't happen afterall
@@OskyyD1 nah didn't happen. Me, from the future
I LOVED THIS EPISODE WAY MUCH BETTER THEN EPISODE 9
Way much better?
The later episodes of season 8 were more hyped which made it better
I feel like Negan arguing with Rick about why Carl died is also me arguing with AMC about Carl dying
Damn that scene was heavy as hell
Andy Lincoln was clearly incredible in this scene. But the "just give up" sends shutters down my spine. Negan is SO good at persuasion
Negan loved carl
Negan is just relieved Carl didn’t die at his hand.
This scene shows us that Negan has humanity, his emotions when he hears about Carl's death are just painful to see. You can tell Negan truly cared about Carl and showed remorse for Rick's loss and didn't want Rick to lose anyone else close to him.
This episode was the one that had me full on Negan's side. He spoke nothing but truth, and you could start to see the change on his character.
Thanks for the vid my DVR stopped recording right at this part i was so mad
What a beautiful scene. This represents the best of what TWD was capable of. I know that at the time, they set viewership records but this show deserved awards. Andrew Lincoln deserved an award. JDM deserved an award. I know that a lot of fans thought the savior war dragged on for too long but I really enjoyed the arc.
I just wished they had included the fight between Jesus & Negans bodyguards.
Negan: “why hasn’t one of my people killed you yet”
Jesus: “because your people suck”
Always loved that little exchange haha!
Man Rick just went full Savage
It’s scenes like this that I just want to keep seeing in this show negan is such a great character as well just telling him the harsh truth everything about this scene is great
the one thing these two had in common was carl and how much they both loved him. you can see it in negan's face and hear it in his voice. but rick is too angry and sad to hear it. and carl must have cared for negan since he just wanted them both to stop and work together.
I honestly think negan would accept him if rick accepted him
They become close in comics not as close as Carl and Negan but they changed that but I hope they set that up. Than we can see both badasses taking down the saviors cause they haven't really showed it but Negan is BADASS and once he realizes he went crazy he becomes awesome in Whisperer fight
One of the absolute best scenes in the whole series
Really hoping Negan and Rick meet again before TWD ends
Hopefully they have a 1 on 1, TLC hardcore match with Daryl as referee.
Damn looking back at this scene after learning about Lucille, makes Negan's speech so much different. Like he know that Rick lost the one thing he loved the most and he knows how that kills who you were, especially if it's your fault.
this episode was the best in a long time, this scene was awsome, Simon and Negans argument, also Simon and the garbage people, more Simon please
One of the best scenes of the whole show.
I really like how even negan was sad that carl died. He didnt smile at all after he heard that
I love how much deeper a scene can get with amazing lines and epic music.
1:29 “IT WASN’T YEWWW”
Man I wish Shane was still alive in this season. Just imagine Shane and Rick working together to take Negan down. Would be pretty interesting
Xx Death xX ur right man :(((((
He would've probably joined Negan.
He would’ve either joined Negan or been lucilled
Shane would never join negan
If Shane is still alive probably whole group would be dead instead of him and Carl.
Carl..the only true savior
Well that's what I hope they're setting up Rick to be Negan's savior like comic. In comics after Rick slits his throat he has a doctor save him. And when Andrea and Maggie beg to execute him Rick says we save people we don't kill them than a few years down road Negan gets let out to help with The Whispers and becomes part of the group
It’s so weird he never got an award. I get chills hearing Rick’s pure anger over Carl’s death when he says "It wasn’t you!"
Wasn't he a few episodes earlier about to smash Carl's head in with Lucille as a punishment for Rick? How does that fit together?
This scene was so perfectly written. Every moment felt so significant! Hard to tell who is the protagonist and antagonist at this point.
Rick is actually the protagonist, he doesn't enslaves people and he treats his group like a family unlike negan. Rick killed 60 of negan's saviour because they think they control the world
Negan was right.
Sometimes when I just want to let out my tears I hold back, I simply look at this scene, and remember that even the bad guy can tell u the right things u don't want to hear.
Even a Broken clock is right twice a day.
This was the Negan we needed to see more from the beginning. Nuanced, conflicted, flawed. Not a good man deep down by any means, but not the monster he thought he had to become.
In my whole life, i've only seen two actors, who have pure real genuine talent
Aaron Paul and Andrew Lincoln.
Aaron Paul is Jessie Pinkman, right?
@@Heisenhulk_80yep
My favorite part about this scene isn’t just how much it shows Negan cares about Carl but also how it shows Rick knows Negan cares about Carl.
1:45 you can really see how sad he was about his death too
this might be the best scene in twd history
I honestly love negan as a villain. Like, idk. Something about the way he shows respect even to his biggest fuckin enemy. Like you can tell he really liked Carl and genuinely does respect Rick even though he knows they'll never be friends. He's an interesting character. I still think he needed to die though personally. So much pain and death caused by one man. Him not dying was kind of anticlimactic
He's alive in the comics
You can tell in that moment negan felt disappointed that carl passed
Negan was ready to flip out on his own people for bombing Alexandria if Carl died from the Saviors destoroying Alexandria lol
Jeffery Dean Morgan is a good actor. It's a pity I don't see him in films much
The comedian!
0:33 great acting on the initial reaction
My heart aches for both of them
The saviors kinda remind me of slavers from fallout
Seeing as it’s already strayed from the comics to a degree .... in saying the show is ending on peace , remember the dream with Judith and negan
Pennywise the Dancing Clown: "Who's Next?"
Stuttering Bill Densbrough: "Y-Y-Y-YOU ARE!!!!!"
Well shanes theory was right
How was Rick supposed to watch Carl 24/7? Lori would have died no matter what. So no, not really.
2:04 "That kid was the future" hits especially hard for comic fans...
