  • In this macabre and blackly comic short story, Lord Mountdrago, Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the British government, reluctantly seeks the help of a psychoanalyst. It seems he is being stalked by a political rival in a series of strange dreams.
This is an original audio presentation of "Lord Mountdrago" by W. Somerset Maugham. It has been performed, recorded, and mixed by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted: The Classic Horror Podcast.

Stellar performance by all. The reader was just superb. I’ve actually never read a story of Maugham’s that I didn’t like. He’s was truly a master of the short story. I’ve read and reread them all over the years. Thank you so much and keep them coming please😊

Thank you for this absolutely brilliant reading of a truly genius story🙏🤗
The more i read/hear Maugham's work, the more I'm taken with his incredible intelligence, breadth of observation, and depth of understanding of human beings.
I seem also to feel his compassion, which, however, never dulls the surgical precision of his ruthless perception and understanding.
He was indeed way, waaay beyond the vast majority of his contemporaries- in so many ways 🙏

Intense love and intense hatred are both emotional attachments that bind us tightly to another person.
Being a cold thinking type who consciously steeled himself against love and affection, Lord Mountdrago was therefore unable to understand the toxic effects of projecting intense hatred onto a shadow figure.
This brought the Lordly Dragon down from his Mount, with fatal results.
“War," Churchill reminds us, "is a continuation of politics by other means.”

What a gripping, compelling story-- your presentation, dialects and subtle sound-images magnifies Maugham's intricate , subtle horror. Maugham knows in depth the human mind and soul. Add to these depths the terrors of political manuvering plus a touch of Roman Catholic theology--Jasper, I will afraid to go to sleep tonight. My dreams are vivid enough as it is!!!!😦🥺😳😊Thank you!!! i remem6er watching this story on t.v., and later on the internet. orson welles played the part of the title character, and i remem6er the scene in which he was singing, "maisy, maisy" from the song. i also remem6er watching another episode a6out a painting hanging on a museum wall, and the same actor who played owen griffiths played an evil little man who some how led unsuspecting people in to the painting, which was really a weird portal to hell.

" ...the dark night of the soul..." Excellent, subtle selection in light of the news of the past week. Egoism of both the mighty and the insignicant resulting in mass slaughter- the " common man"...thankfully newspapers don't use such epithets these days. A very enjoyable rendition, you made two unlikable characters appeal to our sense of pathos- I'm never sure of late if I get my words right so I can express what I feel so strongly about - so many emotions popping up and a childish? trait in my to play Freud or Jung- I decided to go with the notion, the ghost of Owen murdered the Lord! Thank you. Not "hammy" or judgmental- Namaste
