I got the surgery 2 weeks ago it’s insane how much better it feels got a plate and 11 screw didn’t need any of the pain killers and after like 5 days zero pain at all it feels amazing
Had surgery two weeks ago for broken clavicle. A plate and 7 screws! Best decision ever. Post op pain sucked but it only lasted a couple days and I was already moving my arm around a little at home! Within two weeks I had almost full movement of my arm. Just can’t pick up any weight for a while.
@@rikiellia my surgeon gave me the option. My specific break wasn’t too bad although he recommended surgery because there was a third piece of bone that fell off and could move around freely. The surgery was honestly the best decision though. I was out of a sling within a week.
I broke my right clavicle 9 weeks ago I had surgery 2 weeks ago as it didn't heal properly why was I left in so much pain for 7 weeks when it could have been repaired in the beginning and how long will it be before I'm pain free ?
Thanks for your video. I am 48-year-old man, and I have broken my clavicle 6 weeks ago while I was performing Parallel Bar Dip exercises, and I wonder why? just by doing a parallel exercise my left-hand clavicle broke! for 5 weeks I used shoulder sling. Now I want to go back to gym, but I don't know when!
Hi thanks for a great video and information. I'm recovering from surgery. Broke my left clavicle and scapular from a cycling accident. I've broken my clavicle several times in cycling races and this is my first surgery. Reason why they did surgery as my break was almost a compound and had a floating shoulder due to my broken scapular. They placed a titanium chain ( looks like a chain). 6 weeks since surgery already running and cycling but still lots of work to improve range of motion. Definitely was a way faster recovery than my previous fractures non surgery. Also I had a fall on the same side 3 weeks after surgery and the chain did its job with no displacement or fracture anywhere on the clavicle.
I broke mine 8 weeks ago from a cycling crash. Consultant said no surgery but it slowly healing..he said another 2 - 3 months! Missing my bike now 🤪 hope you've recovered well.
@@TezTezTezTezTez ouch I feel ya. All well and can swim now but still not full range of motion due to a frozen shoulder so still bit of rehab work to do. Hope you're recovering well and healing
Thanks for the video. My 6 year old daughter broke her clavicle skateboarding under my watch. I felt like the worst dad ever! This video made me feel a little less worse.
I know it's too late as you posted it 4 years ago but wearing both is much better and keeps your posture and shoulders back helping you with quicker recovery and better range of motion once you heal .
Thanks Docs for this really great, straightforward, and to-the-point explanation of the clavicle fracture! I’m currently recovering from one of those - broke my right clavicle falling off my mountain bike three weeks ago. It turned out to be a lateral end fracture with a very minimal displacement, treated with a sling, no surgery as it’s pretty decently aligned. My problem is that I had a mid shaft fracture of the same clavicle 11 years ago which was then treated with surgery and a titanium plate was put on it which really made a recovery nice and easy. I had no problems at all with it after it healed but now obviously I’m back in the similar position and this time without the surgery. The doctor treating me confirmed that there is no issues to the metalwork I already have, everything is in place and a fracture itself occurred outside of the plate. I still feel a bit of sharp pain when any sudden movement of my body occurs, for instance when coughing or sneezing etc, but overall it’s just discomfort and the usual annoyances of wearing a sling that I only take off for washing and sleeping. Got another consultation and x-rays coming up next week. Sorry for relating my entire life story in this comment 😅 but I have a question for you: Is it generally possible to tell from the x-rays whether there is malunion or delayed union at this stage (meaning about 3-4 weeks after the fracture)? Thanks again for this great video! 👍
Hi P. Welcome for the video. At 4 weeks you can definitely assess the alignment and if minimally displaced a Mali ion would be unlikely. As for delayed union at 4 weeks if likely won’t be healed yet unless you are a teenager. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
So I fell off my bike and broken my right clavicle, the bone pushing up on the skin is very close to the top bone of my arm if you get me and I can feel the bone sticking up and can see it, this is my fourth week and it has not healed at all and they have told me I can get surgery or wait another 4 week to see if heals which I have chosen but now I am not sure if it is the right thing to do, what would u recommend and will I get notified when you answer my comment if you do, please do need answers
Hi Ross. It is very difficult to answer your question without examining you and reviewing the xrays. Generally speaking, in an adult, you may not see a lot of bone growth on xray at 4 weeks - especially if it is comminuted. It is not unreasonable to wait another 4 weeks. The procedure will primarily be the same. If at 8 weeks it is uncertain if you are healed, sometimes a CT scan will help. The other thing that helps guide decision making is pain, if your pain is improving gradually it is not unreasonable to take a wait and see approach. Hope that helps.
Hi, I also had problems same with Ross Blair.. Doc said to me to rest for 1 month, I can feel my bone pushing up, doc said no need surgery, from my X-ray I can see that my bone need to attach by plate cause I can see a lot of displacement, but doc said no need surgery, how about your opinion doc?
@@LankyWx sure does post surgery. Any time they have to cut you open it will hurt post surgery but nothing like the pain you get when you break it. Hope it went well and recovering well too I'm just 6 week post surgery
Great video. Thank you. I broke my left clavicle, in the middle, in a bicycle accident last week, but I don't seem to have that much pain. Is that normal? Is that bad? No shoulder pain. I'm in a figure-eight clavicle brace. Bones displaced quite a bit. Given from what I've read and heard, malunion/non-union seems likely, but maybe it will be asymptomatic, which of course is what I'm hoping.
Mine was more than that, I think. Maybe 2.5cm. Non-dominant arm, I'm middle-aged, and I don't wear suits or such things...maybe I should have got surgery. Just didn't seem worth it though. Were I younger, sure.
i am 61 years old and my clavicle bone was dismembered, fractured, and shattered into 15 fragments which had to be put back together, they put plate and screws in, now will the plate stay in forever or will it be removed at a later date.
Hi Docs thank you for the video. I broke my clavicle around 10 years ago. Took 6 months to heal because my original physio said not to move it it at all. It was a non union for over six months. Eventually i went to a different osteo who pretty much advised me to take the sling off and that it would heal through motion which it did. It was displaced pretty severely (mid break where the half inside to my chest sits ontop of the part out to my shoulder). There is also some shortening i can feel it as it feels as though my shoulder is internally rotating. It has now healed this way and ten years later i play footbal do pullups etc pretty healthy although I have always wondered is there a way to have this healed back to 100% or is it too far gone at this point? Would a bone stimulator or physio help in getting this fixed or would it require a rebreak and surgery only option to get it back to 100%? Thanks in advance for your reply
Hi aceonurass. So if the bone is healed the only thing that could be done is a corrective osteotomy which most surgeons would recommend against. If you have good function and minimal pain you probably should just leave it alone. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and good luck.
Hey doc. I broke my collarbone 5 days ago , I didn’t seek medical help due to the fear of containing the virus, I have a sling on at all time of day , the pain calmed down after the first two days , but every morning I wake up to a bigger bump , why does that happen ?
Hi Mauricio. It is hard to say but initially there is a lot of swelling and as it reduces, sometimes the broken bone becomes more prominent so it looks worse. If you are concerned the best thing to do would be to get reassessed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I've broke mine twice and never went to the doctor (insurance co-pay is just too high). First time was football second time crashing on a mountain bike jump. Each time the sling hurt like hell, and just didn't feel right. A "figure 8 clavicle brace" is what does the trick / allows the bone pieces to lineup up again. Use it / or at the least hold your shoulder back for the 2-3 days and the swelling will lock the bones into place. Being very careful for 2-3 weeks after not jarring the area allows the mending to occur properly. I've healed 100% with no loss of strength or range motion this way. The clavicle breaks were 16 years apart. I think I healed fully from the first one (football). The second was going to break no matter what (very high speed and violent crash directly onto the shoulder / fell from pretty high up too).

Back Archive Move Delete Spam Just watched your clavicle video. My son broke his clavicle in a downhill mountain biking accident yesterday. He will be 17 in September. Long story short - we saw an adult orthopedic surgeon at 930am and we saw a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at 2pm. It was like being in 2 different worlds. Adult: Do surgery. I see so many patients that pediatric surgeons allow to heal on their own. This is faster healing (clearly stating data from a Canadian study from 2005). They present with shoulder pain and lumps that bother them. Cut and dried. Pediatric: I could go either way. If it were my kids, I wouldn't do surgery (vaguely sharing data from a 2019 presentation). He said it was a 2mm difference in length which is minuscule but it looks a lot longer. If it is 2mm and the threshold is 2cm (per your video), surgery seems silly. Pediatric athletic trainer working with pediatric OS: I would say I am 60/40 for healing on its own. I have attached his xray. We can't get a third opinion as he is in a lot of pain and we need try to get him into a figure 8 or do the surgery. Happened upon your video and thought it would be worth sending an email. XRAYS ARE IN EMAIL SENT
Hi Amy. Thanks for sharing your and your son's story. So we are not able to give specific patient advice via this channel. Having said that, we treat the vast majority of our clavicle fractures non operatively with good success. Indications for surgery in our hands would be significant displacement, open fractures, and fractures that have severe comminution and displacement (like 3 part fractures where the pieces are all perpendicular to eachother). Remember the figure of 8 is primarily for posture and will not affect the rate of healing nor its success. It is supposed to be for comfort. And finally if you do decide the non op route you could ask your surgeon about ultrasound bone stimulators which can help. They are expensive but some extended medical benefits cover them. Best of luck to you and your son. Keep us posted. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
I am 62 yrs old and fell off my horse breaking my clavicle badly. I'm looking to buy a Body Protector with shoulder pads. before getting on my horse again. I am 2 weeks in to the healing process. Would you recommend this ?
We are not familiar with body protectors for horseback riding but intuitively it sounds reasonable. Better still, try not to fall off the horse! Good luck and be careful.
Thanks for that. In the UK, we have 'Racesafe Bodyprotectors and also for Eventing, a design with shoulder protection which the manufacturers say will give you a 80 % chance of Not breaking a collarbone. Yes, I agree, "Try not to fall off", but accidents do happen in ! Yes, after the pain I've been through, I shan't be taking any chances, ! Thanks for your reply. Have a nice day,
Hi Chinna. It may. You want to make sure the bone is completely united though. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hi doc , I had a broken clavicle this past June ,15th and it was not severely damaged , it was cracked in the middle of the bone which the doc recommended me the figure 8 and I took it off after in 6 weeks later so now it been almost three month since the accident, and I started with some push-ups it works but I can feel some small pain . the question is , can I get back to train with heavy weight as I used to do (of course with the progress) which’s this sport is my only thing I’m good at and I hoped to join the competitions . Thanks in advance
Hey I’m 14 years old I broke my right collarbone and healed (Didn’t need surgery) but it looks a bit different from the other, would it go back to normal?
Fell from low heart rate, landed on a cement step, snap. Waiting to see ortho who treated the fibula I broke less than two months . Yep air cast on right leg/ankle. Now a suck ass cheap sling I can't stand. Hoping for better restraint like my air cast select.
That is certainly unfortunate that you fell and broke your ankle and clavicle. There are many different ways to immobilize your shoulder after breaking your clavicle - often with a sling - some of which are thin and cloth and others that are more robust. Both can be effective. A figure of 8 brace is helpful in some scenarios. At this point there is not an aircast for the clavicle.
Thanks for Great video. Just broke my collar bone 3 weeks ago. Trying to heal non operatively. One question. I'm very active person would it impact to healing process? Fixation of this bone is so hard? I'm wearing clavicle bandage.
I also had problem with my broken clavicle. Doc said to me to rest for 1 month, I can feel my bone pushing up, doc said no need surgery, from my X-ray I can see that my bone need to attach by plate cause I can see a lot of displacement, but doc said no need surgery, how about your opinion doc?
Hi HAMIZI. Most clavicle fractures do not need surgery even if they are quite displaced. Typically they will heal. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

Hi docs, i broke my collar bone in a motorcycle accident. My x-ray on the day of the accident my collar bone is still connected and my doctor recommended me use an 8 clavicle brace. After 20 days my collar bone totally broke, he told me because of my arm weight the bone move down. He told me to use arm sling now. I broke my left clavicle recently.. Now fixed with plate and 7 screws.. Doc, please tell me how long before i can hit the gym?? And will the clavicle be shortened?? Please do reply! Will it come to full strength like before
Hi public bvc. So usually surgery will restore the length. Time to the gym is variable but likely 3 months depending on your age, the fracture, etc. And often the strength is similar to before the injury. Hope that helps. Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for watching.
I am 25 years of age.. I hear that broken bones grow back stronger! Is it true sir?? Will there be anything i should be concerned of even after complete healing? Also sir, what about the range of motion??
had clavicle surgery yesterday 12/20/22...fingers are numb as well as the lower shoulder. thought the it might be from the Nerve Blocker injection but that should subsided a few hours after surgery. should i sitll be numb a day later..unless there is an issue of course. thanks

Hi Mikel. So every patient and fracture is different but the majority of fractures will heal without surgical intervention. Fractures with comminution and displacement have a higher chance of a non union or delayed union. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Hi thank you for the video it explains things really well. I broke my clavicle a fortnight ago, at the distal end. I have been offered surgery as the bone is displaced but been told that I could also treat it conservatively just with rest and then intensive physio. I am so uncertain as to which is the best way forward as I am a ceramic sculpture and my sport of recreation is tennis. Which treatment route will give me the highest chance of being able to serve overarm and lift 12.5Kg bags of clay?
Hi Jennifer. You are very welcome. It is hard to give specific answers about your case without examining you and seeing your xrays. Even then, it is impossible to know exactly how you will heal. The vast majority of clavicle fractures do well and would be able to lift the weight you listed. Overhand serving is also probably a task that you will likely be able to do but the occasional patient does get some stiffness. Surgery does not necessarily guarantee that you avoid this. Maybe discuss your goals with your surgeon and that may help in coming to a decision. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
interesting functional test there at the end of a pushup. very simple test. athletes should see the issue immediately and voluntarily spend more time on the sidelines
Hi docs thanks for video! I had broken my collarbone second time. First time i broke it on hockey in 2018 and i had nonoperation. This year i fall on bike before month. I broke mine in three places on Aug 13 2018 it's March now no surgery and everything's healed now but I still have pain, i have sagging in my right arm and my shoulder is half in and half out I have nerve damage in the deltoid on my right arm it's ben numb since the accident, im a carpenter aswell curious as to what to do, ben an emotional rollercoaster for me what can i do to regain muscle and not feel pain. Is there any way i can send you my xray for your insight?
Hi Ken. Every case is different but you should have the nerve damage investigated. Many of your issues can be related to that including numbness and weakness. Usually best to get an EMG to identify the issue and then determine if there is a specific treatment. Nerve recovery can be long and sometimes incomplete. Being a carpenter makes it particularly difficult. Good luck and keep us posted.
I broke my clavicle snowboarding when I was around 15 years old. The doctor was called late at night and had to come into the hospital from his home. I don't think he was happy about that. We took x-rays and it was broke in 2 places with a piece that looked like about an inch big just kind of floated in there. Hard for me to tell the size from an x-ray? The doctor said it could definitely use surgery but it would take longer to heal and could heal faster without surgery. I was very active with sports and life at the time. And I wanted it to heal as quick as possible. So as a kid I chose not to get the surgery. I feel like the doctor really should have done surgery now. But I was sent home with a figure 8 lots of pain and some pain medication. When we did the follow up x-rays the small floating bone was still in there. and the two other pieces of bone were healing together on top of each other at an angle. I definitely think it was way more then 2 centimeters shorter. Also I can still see my shoulder is turned in and lots shorter. It does give me some pain still and has felt like a tendon gets hung up on the overlap at times. My shoulder and neck always feel very tight. I have had issues with it for years. But I have not had insurance, time, or money 2 get a surgery done. I have been told even if I had insurance it may not be covered. I don't want to deal with the pain and issues anymore. And i want to be able to throw a baseball like I should be able to. I play sports and would like my arm to be able to perform as best as it can. I have not spoken with a doctor about it for at least 10 year's because of the insurance, money, and time thing. But I am selling my first house. And getting some money. I want to get this surgery to fix my clavicle that should have been done in the first place. I wanted to know what your professional opinion was about this? How much this would relatively cost. I live in Utah and I am now 36 years old. P.S. I am open to an experimental surgery or something that would save me money as long as it gets fixed right. If you want to record the surgery or something like that? Anything that would save me money? I really appreciate your time doctors. Thank you
Was my story/question to long to read? I hope not. I over explain things often. Or did I just miss one of you getting on here to respond to people? I hope to hear back from someone soon thank you. By the way thank you so much for the work and help you do. The body is an amazing thing. And the inner workings of it are fascinating. The brain just goes way too deep for me. But also just as crazy/cool..
Hi Cody. Sorry for the late reply. Things have been busy here. With respect to your injury we often will treat even displaced fractures of the clavicle without surgery. The main indication for surgery would be more than 2 cm overlap. Our bodies can heal a remarkable amount of displacement. If you do have ongoing pain, one option would be to rebreak your clavicle and fix it with a plate but this does carry some risk of not healing, infection, nerve injury and the risk of the anesthetic. You should have a long discussion with your treating surgeon. We are not able to estimate the cost of such an operation as we work in Canada and such procedures are covered by the governmental health plan. Hope that helps and good luck.
Thank you for getting back with me. I am 99% sure it is still overlapped more then 2 cm. I can measure over a inch and a half just in my shoulders on the outside of my skin. And That's after over 10 years. I would make a trip up to Canada to get the re-brake and surgery done there? But it probably doesn't work that way? I'm probably going to have to wait till I get my money and then see if I can find a doctor here in Utah. And hope it won't cost tens of thousands of dollars. Unless you'll do the re-brake and surgery for me? thank you again for your input.
hello, dont know if you 2 still own or use this channel, but im here to say that im getting surgery but dont know when an also, my mother saw a big bump on my upper back to the left(right below the neck ) we think it is a bone trying to stick out, what do i do?
This video is 8 years old now. Are there any new procedures which could be better than those at the time this was made? Like using a rod rather than a plate for instance?
@@souel9740 yes. I was taking pain killer the whole time for first 5 days. I normally don’t like to take any for example even after hernia surgery I didn’t take pain killer. But I had to with this lol. I basically slept at 2 hour intervals because the most comfortable was in a slightly decline sitting position. But then my tail bone would get sore so I just repeat like that. Sleeping lying down later was such an amazing feeling 🤣
I am feeling ok to go without a sling as can move my arm quite well after the fracture. Question, would this be ok or would this slow down or stop the healing process? The fracture happened 3 weeks ago
Hi Maureen. Every fracture is a bit different. You may want to restrict the shoulder motion but going without a sling may be ok. It would depend on the xray. Best to discuss with your treating surgeon. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Broke my clavicle and it’s been 4 days it’s been getting better and I wanted to know if I could still go to the gym and do heavy weight if I get surgery
Hi Roberto. Often you can but sometimes people have symptoms related to the hardware that require it to be removed. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Helpful, thanks. Clean break, right side, took a 90 mph foul ball which the catcher failed to block for me (plate umpire), fluke, first time in 20+ years. The pricey chest protector didn't do its job? Pretty pissed. Probably nothing until late July?
Hi Michael. It would be difficult to give you a specific timeline even with a proper physical examination and review of your films. Every fracture is different. Fractures that heal more quickly are less displaced and are in less pieces. Stop smoking if you do and consider a bone stimulator if you have insurance coverage or the means - those are both things that can speed up healing. Typically about 6 weeks for that can vary. As for the chest protector, it is likely more related to bad luck. There is one area of the clavicle that does curve forward making it more prominent and more likely to take the impact but I guess if it was even thicker than it already is it may have helped. Good luck.
Hi thank.you for much great information. I fell landed on bottom them my arm hand took the impact. I wasn't in any pain at the time after awhile my clavicle none was protuding..after an.xray. Hi Figen figgy. If you are having trouble swallowing you should be assessed. Without examining you or your xrays it is difficult to say but you should be assessed. Thanks for watching and good luck. Keep us posted.
I wish you'd covered the post-op numbness that lasts commonly up to a year. I made a mistake by googling it and what I've read totally freaks me out! People having hypoesthesia that lasts for 8 years and with no sign of healing... possible permanent neural damage... What do the Docs have to say about it?
Hi *click*. Post operative numbness is definitely a recognized complication from open reduction internal fixation of the clavicle and is usually related to traction or transection of the supraclavicular nerve. It can improve after surgery and in many cases does not have a significant impact on the patient however it does happen for sure. Hope that clarifies the issue and reinforces the fact that all surgery carries risk regardless of how straightforward it may seem.
Just had my surgery yesterday and tingling and numbness have not show signs of improvement. I’m currently googling Also which led me to this. Wondering how common this is? and if patients are experiencing this, what percent of them do you show improvement and in what time period? Understand that everyone heals differently just looking for some general numbers.
Hi Micaela. Bless you! If the sneezing was very violent theoretically it could cause the bone fragments to move but that would be unlikely. Good question though! Thanks for watching.
I fractured the midshaft of my left clavicle with mild shortening and greater than 100% inferior displacement last week from fatbiking. I will be going for surgery in 4 days. hope all goes well!
After 6 years mri & pain management for pain in my upper back i was sent for xray the radiologist asked me if i had been in an accident i said no i hurt my back in work by over stretching way over my head it turned out a piece had broken of my clavicle and made it's way into my thoracic muscle the pain is excruciating at times this all came to light as covid hit our shores i had intended getting it removed but unfortunately recently i been diagnosed with osteonecrosis in my jaw bone a rare side effect from osteoporosis treatment.
Hi, is more riskier from the fall on your shoulder with the Titanium plate with screws on attached on your collarbone? I am asking this Q because I have Titanium plate on my collarbone (the surgery was before 8 weeks) but now I am planing to continue with cycling (MTB and road cycling) so is it safe for me to continue with cycling or is it better first to remove my plate and then to do cycling wit all the risks from accidental fall as usual? Thank you 😊!
Hi Zoran. If you have a high chance of multiple high energy falls it may be prudent to have it removed first. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Wwhat happens if the clavicle lartially pops out and around at the chest?sternoclavicular) and has been for as long as you can remember ? No pain? And no acute injury? Worth investigation?
Hi bobbyj joel. It sounds like you are talking about a sternoclavicular dislocation. If this is a chronic injury and there is no pain, it may not be necessary to investigate. You certainly can mention it to your physician. Acutely the more concerning injury is the posterior SC dislocation which means the clavicle goes back towards the heart and great vessels and can potentially be an emergency. Hope that clarifies. When in doubt - get it checked out! Hey a rhyme! Thanks for watching.

Peace be upon you, Doctor. I want to ask you. I had a traffic accident 8 months ago, as a result of a clavicle bone. There was a displacement on the day of the accident. But after a month, a rumor was made. I am a bone that is back. Is 8 and a half months enough to return to lifting weights? Thank you.
Hey doc so I broke my mid shaft right clavicle and it’s overlapped onto the side by she shoulder, I didn’t do surgery cause the Doctor said I didn’t need it. but after 5 weeks in the sling they told me I’m healed but now with it off the skin around my bump is in pain and I’m scared the doctor didn’t see how close to the skin it was. Do you suggest it will be fine or he should’ve seen how much it’s out of the skin and did surgery. Please help am I okay or not
Not much information for a 65 year old (me) broken collarbone after falling off my bike. How long for and old guy like me to get full strength back in my shoulder. It's been 10 weeks, pretty good range of motion but can be painful if I over do it. I have quite a big bump there too.
Hi KWJJ. Often it will take 4-6 months to get back to full strength and the bump is likely there for life. As long as the bone heals fully you should be ok. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching.
Hi doc Broke my right clavicle, no surgery was needed. Figure of eight & sling is used its been 25 days now since the accident. Doctor has suggested to remove figure of eight and sling by 1 more week My doubt is how to ensure that the bone has healed completely...also will i be able to do weight training again?? Thanks in advance
Hi Vignesh. Usually the combination of xray and physical examination is the best way to determine healing. Pain is also a very good indicator. Thanks for watching and good luck.
Hi bongani. It is not uncommon to have shoulder and neck pain after surgery. This will typically improve with time and improvement in the range of motion of your shoulder. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Hi Aiman. Good question. Best to discuss with your treating surgeon as the amount of healing and the severity of the fracture will cause the time to vary. Likely 6 weeks. Thanks for watching and good luck in your recovery.
Hi doc got some question here. I just got a complete fracture of left clavicle around a month ago from mountain biking with a little shortening (around 1.2-1.3 cm) & a small inferior displacement, right now im on a non operative treatment with arm sling. My orthopedics offered me if i want to go with operative though he preffered to continue with the non operative since its been a month since the incident. When i take a look in the mirror there is no significant differences between my left and right shoulder. But my biggest question is, will the malunion affect the bone strength (weaker than normal bone) in the future? Im not an athlete but a mountain bike enthusiast
Hello I have a comminuted fracture on my RH clavicle and I'm a lefty. My clavicle is in four separate pieces two large and two small pieces in the middle. The consultants all agreed it would benefit from surgery. Unfortunately they won't do surgery for me as I don't consent to doing a PCR test. Im 40yrs old a non smoker and a L3 rope tech / Arborist, I'm now three weeks in and the bone from my chest is pointing upwards and from the middle to the shoulder there is a dip. I'm able to move it around now plus raise above my head. Could I please have some sound advice and I would be more than happy to answer any questions thank you. Roman
Hi Roman. Sorry to hear you have a fracture. Comminuted fractures often do better with surgery. If you want it, just get the PCR test. Not sure what the issue is but up to you. If it doesn’t heal or could lead to pain and dysfunction and possibly require surgery later. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you for your reply. It looks like I will have to wait until the pcr testing has finished before having surgery as this applies with private surgery also. At the present I'm eating plenty of pumpkin seeds, fish, berry's and alot of other foods that are good for bone, tendon and muscle recovery plus keeping a good posture and sleeping on my back with my shoulders down. Does this all sound good to you? Is there anything else you would advise to help at this time? before maybe needing surgery. Thank you.
Hi Docs thanks for a great video...my wife suffered an accident with a car this altercation seriously injured her ribs and broke both arms...my question is her left clavicle has been displaced right at the ac joint...causing it to be displaced upward, it appears to be limiting her ability to lift her arm vertical, would that bone need to be reattached? Kind regards William
Hi Acumen Automotive. It sounds like she has an AC separation. Depending on the severity, the majority of those injuries are treated non operatively but if she is having ongoing shoulder issues it should be investigated to make sure something else is not going on. Hope that helps. We do have a video on shoulder dislocation vs separation that may be useful. As well as the rotator cuff video. Thanks for watching and best of luck to your wife.
@@TalkingWithDocs thank you for the reply , we have an appointment with the doctor who is taking care of Elsa....however I have a better understanding of her injury...thanks again kind regards...William
Post surgery do you think some neck asymmetry and tightness is expected just because of the muscles seizing up from the trauma? Is it possible for tendons in the neck to be pulled too tight permanently because of surgery? Thanks!
Hi Elizabeth. Yes it is quite common to have some trapezial spasm that often will resolve. If it is getting worse or severely painful get checked out. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hi milkdrinker. So having surgery for cosmetic reasons is not recommended. There can be a bump for sure. The function is often very good after surgery. Hope that helps with your decision. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
Hi sir.. I broke my left clavicle bone in the month of April, it's been six months now.. I didn't have any pain, but if I sleep left side I'm feeling some discomfort. Why? And how many more days take to complete recovery.. Please help me sir
Ok answer me that Docs, why does my 2 weeks operated clavicle hurts just from hearing you guys talk about clavicle? Also, why does it hurts even more when I watch videos of surgeries? hahahaha I am 31 and I have been snowboarding only BIG stuff, so I guess I might wait the 3 months. Feb 19, Saturday, it is. :)
Would either of you be willing to look at a jpeg of my xray of a nasty clavicle fracture near the outer edge of my left shoulder (Do I have floating shoulder?) and tell me what you think (would you recommend surgery? What kind?) I was informed that two ligaments in the area were severed as well. I don't have insurance and am trying to get as many perspectives as I can. Can I email you my xrays?
Hi vkahri. Sorry to hear about your injury. We are not allowed to provide formal advice to patients due to medicolegal liability. Having said that, the clavicle fractures that most commonly require surgery are those with comminution, significant shortening (greater than 2cm) and most lateral clavicle fractures as they are unstable and often will not heal. Hope that helps and best of luck with your decision. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you. (is it possible to get your informal opinion then?).... Anyway... Mine is definitely lateral, as I just googled that. It's the end and there is noticeable droppage of my shoulder compared to my right side. Limited mobility that I'm guessing I wont get back without surgery...?
I had surgery two weeks ago on clavicle titanium plate. just wondering about physical therapy how high can I lift it? Until pain ? also can I exercise and is sweat a problem for infection can I use 1 pounds weight for curls or will that bend plate
Hi Joe. Usually early on surgeons want patients to go very slowly. Best to discuss specific issues with your surgeon because it would depend on how the surgery went, how strong they felt the fixation was, etc. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Hello docs! I would like to ask something regarding clavicle fracture. My shoulder started hurting maybe by 2020, I had it checked by an orthopedic doctor. They took an x-ray of it and found nothing, they told me that it was just my muscle and that I should avoid lifting heavy things. months had passed and it healed, but it would comes back occasionally. I tried to go to an orthopedic clinic last 2021 as my shoulder often feels a sharp numbing pain also my collarbone has this sharp stabbing pain whenever i tried to lift my arms ,and they also did an x-ray and told me that the problem was on my neck. Whenever i got to have a long rest from work the pain would subside. But this time it came back again and it is more painful, there’ll be an instant that even when I don’t lift a thing or just standing, my shoulder hurts so bad that it becomes swollen. So I went to another orthopedic clinic just last week, the doctor told me that my neck could possibly be the problem, he did an x-ray on my neck and my shoulder and found a crack on my Right Clavicle area. And I was shocked when he told me that it needed a surgery. Can you give an opinion docs? He showed me the x-ray and the crack on my collarbone is so small. I am really confused why it needs to under go surgery.
Hi Cath. That does seem a bit odd. It is possible that the fracture is old and went on to what is called a non union. If you are uncertain the best advice we could give would be to get a second opinion. The indication for surgery would be pain at the site of the fracture. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hey boss, my clavicle broke about 4 weeks ago, in an motor accident, the clavicle broke in the middle section and rest on each other about 1 inch. The doctor just gave me a sling saying he wanna see how it will heal first, it's been 4 weeks and I'm working my hand better just that it can't take weights yet and far stretch to the next shoulders, I'm 19 years of age and a gym lover. I have been wondering if the bone heals and the clavicle is a bit short is it gonna affect me ? Or how strong are bones after broken. Especially the clavicle. I love powerlifting. Thanking you in advance
Hi Ken. Usually the healing will be as strong as before. It has to be more than 2cm short to typically cause problems. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did
Hi Krisha. It is hard to say. There is a slight trend to operating on more clavicles. Most will heal without surgery. It will likely depend on the number of pieces, their displacement and any possible shortening. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Hello Docs. I was wondering i had my clavicle broken bad, 2 cm shortening and was in a z shape under x ray, one doctor wanted to operate it rest didn't. After helling (i broke it 3 months ago in a bike acident, took of the sling abouth 2 months ago) my arm started to hurt real bad (when walking or moving my arm in a rush) . When I took of the sling it didn't hurt, but in the last week my uper chest muscle hurts bad and get some smaller pain in my lats and upper traps. Should have i gone for surgery and what can i expect. Srry for my english.
Hi Mirza. 2 cm is on the bubble. Best advice is to get into physio and work on regaining your strength and range of motion. Best of luck. Some people go for surgery later. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hey Doc.. I broke my right clavicle on jan 23rd.. my doc put me on a sling for 6 weeks and removed it.. for the next 10 days I tried to improve motion of shoulder.. and exactly on 12th day after sling removal, I tried to lift my arm side ways and felt pain.. then I noticed a slight gap between the joint of fracture.. back to sling for 2 days and visited my doc mentioned the same to him.. he examined the bone with his hand and said it’s all okay and asked me to remove sling again.. it was very very uncomfortable after I finished my bath and I started noticing the gap between again.. is it normal?? Did I do some over movement for this to happen?? Will it be healed properly if I use sling for a week or two weeks??
Hi Power House. So it is difficult to say without examining your shoulder and reviewing your films. The xray will ultimately tell the story and as long as your pain continues to go down and your motion continues to increase that is a good sign. Regular follow up will be important. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching.

Hi Andrew. We often treat with figure of 8 for comfort. Lateral 1/3 can be a little tricky and sometimes need surgery. Best to review with your surgeon. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Hi Shreex100Batoon. Yes we would typically allow patients to play basketball with hardware in place. If the hardware was painful or limited range of motion some patients would consider having it removed after 1-2 years. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

Hi Yessi. Often in younger patients with minimal displacement surgery is not indicated. The main role for surgery is in comminuted and shortened fractures. Hope that helps. Best of luck with a speedy recovery. Thanks for watching.
Hi, i am a 14 year old boy. I broke my collarbone yesterday in a sports accident. The doctor said that i did not need surgery. The bone had broken but it was in a normal spot. I am using a sling. The pain is terrible and so is the discomfort. I cant sleep. Any tips. Thanks

Hi, I've broken my collarbone last year... and every time I feel my collar. I feel something floating inside of it, but no pain. I don't have this on my other collarbone
Ideally you should be seen by your treating physician and have an xray. If the xray is inconclusive a CT scan can adequately assess whether or not the bone has healed or united. If you do not have significant pain, it may be easier to leave it alone and see how it goes rather than enduring the risks of surgery.

I broke my left clavicle, in the middle, in a bicycle accident last week, but I don't seem to have that much pain. Is that normal? Is that bad? No shoulder pain.
I'm in a figure-eight clavicle brace. Bones displaced quite a bit. Given from what I've read and heard, malunion/non-union seems likely, but maybe it will be asymptomatic, which of course is what I'm hoping.
I broke mine about 5 weeks ago and I also had little to no pain generally, surgery was required for me though
How are you doing now? Did you ever get surgery?
I’m in the same situation right now and have no idea what I should do. My bones are displaced 2.2 cm apart, what was yours?
Mine was more than that, I think. Maybe 2.5cm. Non-dominant arm, I'm middle-aged, and I don't wear suits or such things...maybe I should have got surgery. Just didn't seem worth it though. Were I younger, sure.
Well...more of a maybe, but short window on surgery. Gets a little messy if you wait too long, or so I understand.

Just watched your clavicle video.

Fell from low heart rate, landed on a cement step, snap. Waiting to see ortho who treated the fibula I broke less than two months . Yep air cast on right leg/ankle. Now a suck ass cheap sling I can't stand. Hoping for better restraint like my air cast select.
I am almost sixty.

I just broke mine 4 days ago..and i dont want any surgery..is that okay doc.?will my clavicle bone heal itself?

I just broke mines and I’m afraid it’s gonna come back to haunt me. I hope everything works out for you.
@@pktillidie my advice would be if the doctor said it's in any way your choice or maybe a good idea then I would say. Yes please get the surgery done.

I am feeling ok to go without a sling as can move my arm quite well after the fracture.
Question, would this be ok or would this slow down or stop the healing process? The fracture happened 3 weeks ago

Good luck.
Grateful, thanks. At the moment, I am the very definition of "grumpy ol' man."

Hi Roman. Sorry to hear you have a fracture. Comminuted fractures often do better with surgery. If you want it, just get the PCR test. Not sure what the issue is but up to you. Hi vkahri. Sorry to hear about your injury. We are not allowed to provide formal advice to patients due to medicolegal liability.
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks doc. They gave me a prescription, a painkiller and a skeletal muscle relaxant.
It's possible to heal without any kind of surgical repair. I broke mine when I was younger and I just needed a sling.
Hi Risa. We agree. There is significant potential to heal without surgery in most cases. Thanks for the comment.
Hey boss, my clavicle broke about 4 weeks ago, in an motor accident, the clavicle broke in the middle section and rest on each other about 1 inch. I have been wondering if the bone heals and the clavicle is a bit short is it gonna affect me ? Or how strong are bones after broken. Especially the clavicle. I love powerlifting. Thanking you in advance

doc's question do you have to open a stomach to know what is wrong with it or can you do something else before sergery
Often a CT, ultrasound or MRI may help diagnose. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I just had a clavicle fracture. Result of xray says, its displaced and oblique linear fracture. Do u think I will have surgery?
Hi Krisha. It is hard to say. There is a slight trend to operating on more clavicles. Most will heal without surgery. It will likely depend on the number of pieces, their displacement and any possible shortening. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
After 9 months of my collarbone fracture... Need to know if can take out plate and screw's on my shoulder
Hi Adolfo. We usually wait 1-2 years so you are getting close. Talk to your surgeon. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs thank you for replaying dint expect it, it will get better.
Hey, hru feeling now?
can we get back the full motion ofthe shoulder works ....????
Often you can Rupa. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Sir i have been applied 8 shaped bandage .. it has been 16 days .. but bones are still little instable .. they move a bit when i lie down and move ... Do it will get better over time. . or i need to worry about this
Hi Ravi. It will typically take 4-6 weeks to heal. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

Hey what anatomical considerations can be done during a mid humeral shaft
Hi Goldie. Not sure about the question. Can you elaborate?
What do you consider if you want to carry out a mid shaft amputation of the humerus?
Are deformities permanent? How and can they be treated/corrected?
Hi Alton. Unless you are very young yes they are. The only way would be with surgery which we would recommend against for cosmetic reasons. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs Thanks for the info/follow up. I’m certainly not young and don’t like the idea of surgery/scars. At my age, takes to long to heal/recuperate ✔️
Again thanks for the info. My deformity is near the neck/collarbone area. Hasn’t gone done since injury 2 July 2022. 90 mph fastball foul tip! Ouch!!!
Hi. Broke my right clavicle 6 days ago. Distal third. The doctor wrap me with bandage which is i think figure of 8 plus i have to wear clavicle strap with is also figure of 8. Now the discomfort of the bandage is far worst than my broken clavicle. I cant sleep at night because its too tight in my chest. Do you think figure of 8 strap is enough? I really want to remove the bandage around my chest and shoulder. I have never seen treating clavicle fracture with bandage. Please help. Thank you.
Hi Andrew. We often treat with figure of 8 for comfort. Lateral 1/3 can be a little tricky and sometimes need surgery. Best to review with your surgeon. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Is it possible to play basketball even if my clavicle has a plate?please doc I need your help🙁
Hi Shreex100Batoon. Yes we would typically allow patients to play basketball with hardware in place. If the hardware was painful or limited range of motion some patients would consider having it removed after 1-2 years. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
@@TalkingWithDocs Thank you so much doc😊😊
Doc what year to remove the plate to your recover ur clavikel .. ?
Usually 1-2 years minimum
After how many months steel plate in clavicle can be removed
Hi Syam. We recommend 1-2 years but only if necessary. We usually recommend not to remove it. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
It has been 5 years and I am quite scared about this. Should I get it removed or let it stay?
Hi Bob Rob Official. If it is not bugging you, leave it in! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
@@TalkingWithDocs there is no major effect to it but it feels weird and uncomfortable sometimes
Broke my right clavicle 13 weeks ago, it still moves in my shoulder and still can’t lift any weight. Been told I need surgery and that’s happening in 2 weeks which is fairly quick from deciding to operate and the operation here in the uk
Well good luck Mitch! Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
@@TalkingWithDocs hi guys, I had the surgery yesterday morning and I understand it’s still very early on, but how long does it take for the numbness around my deltoid and pectoral muscle take to go away. I’ve read that local anaesthesia usually takes around 4-6 hours so I’m just a bit concerned that I can’t feel anything around my shoulder. Thanks for the help
@@kenarjune7756 In most cases the bone will heal itself, up until I had the operation I could still feel the bone moving in my shoulder so I had no strength at all but after about 8 weeks I had gotten used to the pain and how to get around it. So much so I forgot about it and tried to get up by using it and I just fell back on the floor
@@mitchdavies4555 thanks bro. I put the comment in wrong section my bad. But thanks
@@mitchdavies4555 how are you feeling now?
Hi doc I have mine clavicle fracture for car accident now more than 20days I’m wearing sling should I go to surgery or no because my doctor said it’s my choice to get the surgery or no. But I’m afraid to get the surgery and now it’s ok if I’m gonna move my shoulder or no
Hi Asnifah. So many of these fractures can heal without surgery but it depends on the fracture type. Often we will keep people in a sling for 4 weeks or so depending on healing. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Hi doc,I broke my clavicle and it’s up to two months it hasn’t healed
I was told the bones were overlapped.
What do I do
Hi Chisom. Often it will still heal with time. Sometimes a CT scan can help. A bone stimulator may be able to accelerate healing. Good luck. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
hi doc,i have a question please, i broke my clavicle 6 weeks ago and i did my check up on my 3rd weeks and had xray..on my xray shown that my bone is not full attach yet by doc said.then i came back for my 2nd check up on 6 weeks but my first doctor wasnt on that time so other doctor see on me and i show him my previous xray on 3rd weeks and he says it badly wrong healed.he told me it should be done surgery from the strart. so i ask him if still continued use my figure 8 strap and he says yes and see whats the result after 3 months. i was really worried at this time but my range of mottion is great and no pain at all..should i still continue using a figure 8 for how long?? any advice doc please happy for your answer🙂
Hi ENDURO PINAS. Figure of 8 treatment is primarily for pain and comfort. If you are doing well you should be able to discontinue its use. Best of luck. Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Sir I have a clavicle surgery in my left side last September 18, 2018 and untill now I haven't remove the plate because I got pregnant after 4 months of my surgery.. and now my shoulder is painful whenever I lay down or get up and specially if I sleep on my left side accidentally. What should I do?
Hi randy. So it is best to start with an xray and try to determine if the pain you experience is related to the hardware or to something else. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Mine broke almost 2 weeks ago. My left one. Mine are displaced. It’s 11.3 mm apart. They said it needed surgery soon so I made an appointment for the next day to meet the surgeon. But He said it will heal on it’s own since I’m still young (17yrs). Out of no where surgery is not recommended. Any advice ?
Hi Yessi. Often in younger patients with minimal displacement surgery is not indicated. The main role for surgery is in comminuted and shortened fractures. Hope that helps. Best of luck with a speedy recovery. Thanks for watching.
Talking With Docs thank you so much I’m recovering slowly but surely :)
I had a doctor who was suppose to do knee surgery and he went snowboarding and broke his clavicle. Never did I never got to have my surgery.
Hi Darlene. Even doctors are not immune to these kinds of injuries.
Any tips. Thanks
It also stings a lot
Hi DJ Miguel. So it will get better each day as the bone starts to heal and move less. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Even something floating inside, can you do normal day to day activities? Thanks
hi docs im a 30 year old mixed martial arts fighter. Broke my clavicle during wrestling 4 days ago. Went to multiple doctors and most of them said the figure8 sling should be enough to fix it. One doc said i should go for surgery. I can move my arm sort of and type etc. Do you guys think ppl can return to wrestling and contact sports with just a figure 8 sling treatment? Im worried cuz i feel like the training might be too physically intense and should go for surgery
Hi Letme. The clavicle if undisplaxed can heal well with non operative treatment. But you do need to give it time. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks for replying to comments! You guys are one of a kind.
Letime hey buddy same here how it went what you decide to do
