Hay Jim, a local shopshire lad here, the reason I didnt race the ebike at the malvers was due to the injury. I got second behind you last year.
I did my collar bone + plating a few years ago, didnt have it removed and did it again in April this year at Dyfi. Not having it removed made the re-break really difficult to manage surgically.
Its super important not to crash again with the plate in.
Also, I work in orthopaedics. Surgeons philosophy around plating or not plating is different. The 'modern' approach is to plate as it is a functional long bone, however, old-school guys acknowledge the complications and risks of surgery more and prefer not to.
The reason they wait 1 - 2 weeks is to allow the swelling to go down to make surgery easyer, also you are much fitter for surgery. They are also trying to juggle strikes and understaffed trauma lists at the moment which doesnt help.
My silver lining was to come back fitter than when I left, I got trainer road and a wahoo and smashed it for 3 months.
I am literally off now for my last x-ray before i hopefully have it out. Then 6 weeks to let the screw holes heal. The incisions become less painful as the nerves are cut and damaged by the way so the first surgery is always the most painful.
Rest up, stay fit and see you on the trails ASAP
Nice one, what’s the earliest you can have the plates removed?
@PinnedTV as soon as I manage it I will let you know. Trying to get an operation on the NHS atm is virtually impossible
As I’ve already posted Jim, I’ve had a plate in the past and am now dealing with another fracture (plus 8 ribs)on the other side with no plate. It’s just my experience, but I wish I’d been allowed to have a plate this time. Much slower recovery. I’m retired, but work outdoors with my horses and my own stables every day. Money’s obviously not a problem, but like you there’s heavy work for me and the wife every day that just has to be done, full stop. The plate is the way to go, defo! Loving the updates 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks dude, good to know
Get well soon
Jim, I can't stress enough how much benefit you will get from hydrotherapy. Swimming pool takes all the weight off your arm/shoulder to help get the movement back. I've ripped all the muscles in my shoulder & had a much faster recovery from spending time in the pool
Thanks mate, but told can’t get it wet for two weeks or remove dressing! 😡
Rest up Jim, loving this style of vlog.
Thankyou
Nail on the head mate (NHS)
Around 20 years ago I had a motorcycle accident & broke my collar bone & shoulder blade & was told to keep my arm in a sling for 2 weeks then every day after that take the sling off for a few hours every day & use the arm as much as possible & come back & see us in 9 weeks.
I went back & was told that the collar bone & shoulder blade has healed out of line 🤬 I was told they would not brake it again & plate it as I had left it to long🤬
Now I can not lift my right arm above my head & in the cold weather it is very painful.
Glad your go for the OP
Get well soon mate
Thanks mate
Get well soon dude all the best from the woods 💚
Edit:- you definitely did the right thing going to the hospital. Wishing you well for the next few weeks 😎
Thanks dude
Everyone loves a good rehab series. Good luck and back on the bike soon.
Thanks mate
Hope your recovery is going well Jim. Found this video great as I'm working on a shoulder injury to after my crash last weekend at FOD. Mines not as bad as yours but I'm feeling your pain mate.
Ah thanks mate
Man you saying about the horrible crunchy feeling you’re getting it’s taking me straight back to when I did mine. Heel up soon man. ❤
😬😬😬
I was always peddle striking on my Vitus eSummet had a few over the bars! I fitted 155mm long cranks 4:15 from original 175 mm made a massive difference and I’ve stopped peddling around corners completely lol
Don’t blame ya!!
Mate 100% get it plated, i let them talk me out of plate for the 'natural ' healing process. Couldn't use my arm properly for 6 months. My x-ray wss very similar to yours luckily I didn't have as much pain as you're currently in.
Get it plated and get well soon 💪
Plated up now mate
Really interesting stuff. You're doing amazingly well. Keep up the good work and a speedy recovery. Cheers
Thanks, will do!
I spent the first three months of this year on crutches and off my bike, the journey back was really tough mostly a mental one. I wish you a speedy recovery so that you back to doing what you love so much, take it easy it will come all the best D
Thanks mate
Great vlog Jim. Honest and to the point. Heal well dude.
Thanks 👍
Keep it up Jimbo! Feel for you man, i done my ankle badly start of the month and have been going along the same journey stuck in house/missing all the last of the good riding weather! Gotta keep the mind on track, speedy recovery from the op and keep doggos close for company - they're always good vibes ❤
100% 🙏
Best wishes for a complete and straightforward recovery. Having had my more than my own fare share of fractures and suffered the frustration of the post injury recovery 'ups and downs' I can appreciate what you are going through...but before you know it you'll be back shredding it on the bike!
Cheers
Fair play Jim, every cloud ay, good to see you using your time usefully. Like the honesty, good luck with the recovery
Thankyou
Had a bad knee injury at the end of 2019 and redundancy was also hanging over me at the same time. My head was in bits, thankfully those close to me (Mrs poetic inparticular was fantastic support) looks like youve got good supportive people around you also. All the best with your recovery 💪
Thanks mate
Hope you get better soon. I think this is really useful for all MTBers to see the recovery happening and how you manage it. Hope you're better soon jimbob! Breathing exercises and positivity exercises as well as whatever you need to do to speed up the healing! Hopefully all these healing vibes from the community will help too :) The collarbone is the one MTB injury that really gives me the fear as it would take me out of skydiving for a year. Useful to know how the insurance actually works out. So good you got many people helping out too
Ah thanks mate
There's nothing worse than being injured when your very active jim, nice to see your on the mend though. My mate had same injury about 2 months ago,had his pinned. Due to be removed soon. I wouldn't bother with glucosamine , i took it for 20 years and it's done nothing for my arthritic joints. Even my consultant says there is no concrete evidence it works. BCAA is definitely good for recovery though, more muscle than bones. Keep thi chin up and speedy recovery mate
Thanks dude
All best mate 👍
Thanks
Been there, done that! Three times! I know what you feel like. Get better soon dude.
Thanks
Broke shoulder and also AC ligament. Had it pinned and plated, semi emergency, in Bourgeois St Maurice. NHS will try to talk you out of having plate removed, but definitely persist with that.
Yeh had one removed from my ankle, just said it rubbed my boots
I did the same 4 years ago, got mine plated after 1 week,
All I can say is, it does get better!
100% keep up the calories, vitamins an antioxidants! Sleep is also massive for recovery, only time i had the tablets was at night to get some decent sleep!.
After the surgery I was x3 a day deep icing (over 10minutes) the shoulder and also doing stretches, purchase some resistance bands they help alot.
I did the same and tried to keep my fitness on a spin bike in my house.
Since then it was just gaining confidence on the bike which does eventually come back, an keeping up with the training to gain the muscle which is lost on that side.
All I have now is the odd ache every so often! I have no doubt your be back to normal in no time 💪
Great to hear thanks
Get well soon jim
Thanks
Fractured my lft collar bone v painfull speedy recovery to ya 🤙
Thanks dude
Good to see u on way. I once broke my hip take 4 months till could try ride bit
Crikey!
@@PinnedTV yer told cant ride haha yer ok doc
Heal well Jim! Eggs and meat are deffo power food. I've lost ten pounds eating similar and actually feel better riding as don't have a sugar crash.
Good to know you're awake to the medical bs also!
Oh yeh, all of it, been about 3 years now 😉
@@PinnedTV sound mate. We're fb friends. I'm Paul Clift on there and we have some mtb friends in common. I love the feeling you get when you realise other people think the same about that whole sh!t show.
I feel your pain man. I broke my collarbone at the end of June. First 2 weeks were definitely the worst for me. I started getting physio 10 days after the crash and from the 3rd week onwards the rate of improvement increased significantly . All the best with the recovery!
Not sure if you're past the stage of needing this, but I found that getting my shoulder taped by the physio really helped as felt like it provided similar stability as a sling, but allowed me to move my arm.
Thanks a lot
Took the sling off after two days
Get well soon bud, I found out last year I didn’t bounce either when I took a fall off the mx bike
Cheers
All best with your recovery. I treated a pharmacist with same once who supplemented with calcium, zinc and magnesium - he swore by it, recovered very quickly. How much that was due to supplements not possible to tell but may be worth trying
Yeh always worth a try hey!
Think your definitely right about getting it plated just a shame the whole waiting two weeks process when your coild be actually healing.
Yeh totally
Best of luck with recovery Jim. You are inspiring dude. Nothing like a positive attitude! I would look into taking NAC too, An amazing amino acid. On point with your views about Western medicine too! Its a scam.
Totally
Vaska is mint Jim me and my mates use her more now we are getting older 😂 I’m the bloke you almost borrowed my Hightower for the lake run and live up the hill from Vaska, give us a shout next time you’re up if you need a wee rest before heading back to Shropshire 😉
Ah nice one dude, there this eve!
@@PinnedTV I’m in Brussels all this week with work 🙄 But should be around after that .
@jumbleross picking sprouts?😃
@@PinnedTV close 😂 Selling cameras to go in cars
Did my wrist in march and my collar bone in june. The collar bone is such a shit break as its impossible to fully isolate it, when you live in your own you just have to muddle through ans carry on with normal jobs as much as possible. I mentioned to the hospital about plating mine but they said they try avoid plating if possible 🤷🏻♂️
Ended up having 5 weeks off of work and 8 weeks off of the bike. Thankfully I'm with totally sports insurance and got paid out £1600 for both my wrist and my collar bone
Well done getting through that
Gcn have spin classes on UA-cam which I've been using, they are just enough for motivation, also what do you use for your ice bath.
Thanks I have an XL whiskey barrel I converted cost £150
Heal fast buddy keep it pinned
Will do
Jim can yu tell us why the ice bath is more beneficial than just ice packing the injury area??
Probably isn’t better for just the injury, but for mental health it is. Also whilst recovering weight would pile back on, due to less exercise and the plunge keeps that at bay, by shocking the body to burn brown fats way more than if you didn’t do it. Since the plating I haven’t been able to do it, as I can’t get it wet😞
No more Stanton's?
You haven’t watched for a while hey? 😂
Hi Jim
Sorry to hear you had a off
Good luck on the recovery
Keep it pinned bro ( no Pun intended )
Lol
All the best the bloke with one leg you meet at Ardmore 23
Chris aka Ken - evo
Nice one dude
Get well soon. I wouldn't be too concerned about healthy eating/supplements etc etc it takes up a lot of time and get's you paranoid, plus everyone wants to sell you something that will 'improve' you. Best advice I can give....My dads 83, fit and healthy, Shredded Wheat every morning and lots of veg not one supplemented vitamin in his life, that's about the best you can do, a lot of it is down to DNA/Genes which you can't do anything about. Although, never ever smoke or drink too much booze, alcohol causes lots of cancer. :) Anywas heal fast.
Disagree on the supplements and healthy eating, but totally agree on the rest
@@PinnedTV yea fair enough whatever works! hope the recovery goes well.
Best of luck with your surgery and recovery Jim.
It’s a shit show but you got this. 👍
Great positive mental attitude.
Everyone take note.
Thanks dude
Keep it plated? ...hope it goes/went well, just dont bend the plates while they are on ya bones in another crash...the docs get proper shirty with you then!
Yeh sod that!
That lean greens gave me the shits like you wouldn't believe
😮
😂😂
Really??? You sure that wasn’t something else and just a coincidence or did you eat the whole tub? 😂😂😂
@PinnedTV
Yeah after about a month I had proper shits ,didn't link it at first, as soon as I stopped taking it back to normal, definitely didn't agree with me
Did dizzee rascal do your xray? 😂
F##k me! 😂😂😂😂😂
At our age te main thing the hospital wants is for us to sign a DNR......
Haha yeh
Fasting doesnt heal bones.
Fasting heals the guts.
Stops ya getting fat though!!
@PinnedTV absolutely 💯. Also helps metabolism and insulin resistance
Getting your confidence back on the bike will be a bit of a struggle,I think whoever told you to l let an injury like that heal by itself should be struck off.
Yeh it’s all about saving money for the NHS! FFS
