Hey docs! This is such important information! In early September I decided to give up sugar (after seeing a rather awful picture of myself!) Three weeks later at my yearly checkup, my bloodwork had vastly improved. Three months later I have so far lost 20 pounds, and I feel and sleep better, have more energy and better moods. I am a 62 year old, post-menopausal woman who is 5'3" so that is a lot of weight for me. In giving up sugar I also, without even thinking about it, gave up other highly processed foods like chips, crackers, frozen meals, canned soup, etc. In order to make this a life-long way of eating, and not just a short-term diet, I try to focus on eating real food, instead of telling myself that I can't have something. I will indulge occasionally. The one thing I won't give up is pizza. I love pizza. Anything else I think I can live without. Thanks for the great video!

I started eating the natural human diet (meat, dairy, eggs, seafood, and fish) about a year ago. I lost 24 pounds, the doctor took me off my blood pressure medicine because it went back normal and he took me off a heart medicine I’ve been on for 15 years because the condition vanished. My blood work came back better than it has been in the last 20 years. I feel better than I have ever felt! And the really good part, I eat when I’m hungry, eat till I’m full and it works out great!

When I was working full time my diet was awful. I traveled a lot and as a matter of convenience and time-savings I often found myself eating fast food. After I retired I started cooking all of our meals at home, using a lot of whole foods and making everything from scratch. The health benefits were nothing short of miraculous. My doctor said he'd never seen anyone improve their health so much just by changing their diet. But, it is very time-consuming. There are days I spend up to four hours doing food prep and there's no way I could have done that when I was working. I think that's what gets a lot of people in trouble to begin with. Eating healthy takes a lot of time and effort and many people simply don't have that.

18.50 I live in Spain, though I am British. I have lived here for 50 years and brought up two children and one grandchild. I also worked, my husband too. Many times I have wished there had been more processed and easier and faster food available here. I have always cooked everything fresh, from scratch. Now I realise how great that has been for the family. Yes, of course we went out to eat tapas (still do!), but they are home cooked with fresh ingredients. During the last few years American fast food restaurants have become very popular with young people. They may eat that processed food at weekends, such a pity, but during the rest of the week they will certainly be eating freshly prepared food. Most students have the luck to live at home, so their mothers take good care of their diets. I wonder if there is a study about nutrition in Spain and the consequences of eating fresh food. It is not terribly time - consuming to feed a family very well on good food, nor too expensive! 18. 20.

Great message. I am so worried about my grandkids, all they will eat is processed. I’ve always read labels and tried to limit processed foods, walked and exercised but only one of my two children is following my example. They both feed their children ultra processed foods because it is so convenient and I feel their taste buds are so used to it that they will not eat anything healthy. I wish the government would take a stand against everything that is making our society sick instead of making money.

60 years old now, I eat 2 pasture raised eggs every morning over easy with organic bread toasted (frozen and defrosted)

I’m now 64 years old. Recently, to reduce pain from inflammation in my joints, I flipped my diet to whole foods ( Mediterranean diet as a guide).
I went from 185to 170 pounds in 3 months! To be honest, I thought I was in shape at 185. I exercised daily! I just didn’t realize that I was wearing a “layer of sugar”! Pain and possible knee replacements are wonderful motivators)!
That was 1 1/2 years ago and now holding steady at 168pounds.
I simply removed foods with added sugar and shifted to eating whole foods. By the way, pain from inflammation significantly decreased and I feel so much better! No more sleepless nights with knee pain!
Also enjoying my time learning how to “cook” and not just prepare my meals.

Great topic. I’ve become pretty militant about what I eat. I do find I sometimes struggle with guilt when I indulge in something I know isn’t optimal. I realize life should be about balance but it’s a struggle. I always think to myself I wouldn’t periodically smoke a cigarette because I know it’s bad for me so why do I periodically scarf down a bag of chips.

Ya i'm going thru the same thing after getting a bad blood test result. After some trial and error I think it has a lot to do with being "addicted" to sugar and carbs. If I don't eat any sugar for a few days the cravings pretty much go away. But the first time I eat anything that resembles junk food the cravings come roaring back again. I'm like you where I am actively trying to strike a balance.....albeit a delicate one. Do I really want to live the rest of my life not eating apple pie.? Probably not. But apparently that's where I am going with this. I am getting a new blood test this week after a month of eating nothing but meat and salad so that will be the answer to what I will do. But for sure it's not easy.

1 plus 2 =3! So funny! If you eat something with protein or fiber first, you will be less inclined to eat too much of the junk food. Years ago, I used to be at MacDonald's every day, sometimes twice in a day. Now, I can't remember the last time I got fast food. The unhealthy food is addictive and if you are aware of this, you can learn to live without it. I am not good with limiting myself, so I just don't eat it at all. When you start eating healthier, you can really notice a difference in how you feel and that is a great motivator. Great video!

My staple drinks are water, coffee, and tea (both unsweetened, black); we don't have any soda products. Beer and wine are for special occasions only. About Christmas and cookies: I just baked 7 different kinds of cookies from scratch. My hope is they fall only into category 3. And Santa will bring chocolate for all my family, which is of course category 4. Special occasion. Unfortunately we all have a very sweet tooth. Luckily I do the grocery shopping, and candy rarely make it in the cart other than for Christmas. A shopping list helps. You are definitely right about reading the labels also; often the ingredients read like a list of chemicals.

Very good info and I agree. I've already talked about the cheese thing, so won't go into that, but I do agree that the soupy, runny nacho stuff is not good. It is yucky. But good Wisconsin cheese is super good. (there I go again) I cook most of my own meals, but like Paul, I must have potato chips. This is a must, but I do limit the intake. There is an obscene amount of processed food in the stores. Reading labels is of the utmost importance.

I had diverticulosis 6 years ago. I read information online that papaya could help and then I also read that I should eat the papaya with the seeds, which are a little bit peppery tasting maybe a little tiny bit spicy.
But I would take a few seeds with a bite of the fruit. Anyway it CURED my diverticulosis and I've never had it come back again.🎉❤💯

There’s a fantastic book called Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us by Michael Moss. Published in 2013, this investigative work delves into how major food companies strategically use salt, sugar, and fat to make their products irresistibly appealing and even addictive.
I highly recommend reading it. This book offers eye-opening insights into the lengths the food industry goes to in order to keep you-and even your children-hooked. Their primary concern isn’t your health but maximizing profits and ensuring you remain a loyal customer from childhood through adulthood.

Great advice! I’m 5’9 and was 180 lbs. I know, I know, nothing extreme. Yet I’ve been trying to lose 5 to 10 pounds for at least 3 years. No luck! Three weeks ago I began using the 5 steps in this video and counting calories and I’m down 5 pounds to 175 lbs. I have noticed that my urge to snack or eat larger meals has waned as well. I would add a sixth item to the list….6. Think about what you are eating before you put it in your mouth. The 9% to 10% ratio you cited is a definite wake up call. Oh, one more bit of advice, be patient. Any weight loss is not going to happen in two or three days. I am on my way to 170!
BTW…..these videos are easy to watch…..good rapport between these two docs makes them enjoyable to watch.

In the UK the demands of society of on the NHS exceed the capacity of supply. I cannot believe that this will come as news to any doctor in Canada. In reality the only realistic solution for the UK population is to become healthier. A lot of people in the UK are overweight, including me. Following the death of a close friend a few weeks ago I have taken a much greater interest in what I eat. In a UK supermarket more than 50% of the products are UPF. As in Chile, in the UK we need to label food very clearly so people know how healthy it is. Especially as more than half is not. For me cutting my intake of UPF and carbs I lost a stone in a month. (I put a bit back on over Christmas). UPF is the new cigarettes. Thanks for creating this short video. Excellent tips and examples.

There are so many barriers to avoiding processed, high energy, low nutrition foods. It takes almost an inhuman amount of self control to do it.
    - time required to prepare food. Not to mention knowledge of how to do it.
    - even preparing food at home, it's easy to lean into flour, grains, salt, sugar, and food high in saturated fats like dairy, meat and chicken.
    - part of the problem is energy overdose. Preparing food at home won't avoid that unless you switch to less palatable foods like vegetables.
    - FUD surrounding pesticides on plants, and pollutants on seafood.
    - in a family where one spouse that remains addicted to high energy, low nutrition foods will continue to come into the house, sabotaging the other.
