Root rubbing is where you place the base or ‘root’ of a dreadlock between two fingers gripped. Then while holding the dreadlock with those fingers, rubbing your palm against the scalp with the aim of aiding loose hairs to form solely at the base of the dreadlock. This is intended to tidy up the roots.
