  • Former television news anchor and book author Nancy Regan is discussing with Indigenous carver Gerry Sheena and Friends United founder Rolf Bouman the many obstacles Indigenous artists face throughout their lives. Gerry Sheena, who is a Salish carver from the West Coast, has been sponsored by the Friends United Initiative for several years and the fruits of his work are being featured also. For Indigenous carving to happen, Friends United not only constructed a workshop, but also had logs from Nova Scotia and British Columbia trucked to the Cape Breton site. The 500+ year-old British Columbia red cedar logs were scheduled to be cut in a sawmill into boards for house construction, and they could instead through Friends United sponsoring be saved for totem pole carving. Gerry Sheena talks about the ups and downs of his life and how he has been able through Friends United support to give hope to youth and emerging artists and leave through his artwork a legacy behind for future generations. A genuinely inspiring and encouraging story, in the true spirit of reconciliation, which sends a clear message of hope and friendship.

The artist is such a humble person. Also Rolf,of course 😊
Could you guys interview more artists and indiginous peoples? I think that would be great. And if you would talk to young people more, and share their experiences and all of that. Would love that 🙏🏼
