Friends Eric Schweig and Rolf Bouman discuss why Eric started to manufacture traditional knives

- Rolf Bouman is chatting with his friend Eric Schweig, who is teaching and exploring Indigenous arts and crafts at the Friends United International Convention Centre in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. When Eric is not working as an actor, he often carves traditional North American Indigenous wooden masks to commemorate his heritage and inspire the younger generations.
In this case, Eric repurposes car and truck leaf springs, which he picked up at a local junkyard, and creates knives as a gift for young friends. Eric also describes how he is making carving knives from steel for his fellow carvers Gerry Sheena and Darren McKenzie. This video is an inspiring learning tool for youth and teenagers as it demonstrates that even with the simplest of tools, new items can be brought back to life from recycled materials. Eric describes to Rolf that he has taken up the art of traditional knife-making as his Japanese Sensei encouraged him to explore this craft. Eric also describes his interest in Japanese culture as he is trying to honour his late Japanese girlfriend, who was the love of his life. A truly inspiring conversation between friends!

I first saw you Eric in Follow the River. I never forgot feeling the good heart I saw in your eyes. The real you. I have the gift of sight to see things like that. I'm part Cherokee. My family hid who we are as they lived white. My Grama confirmed our heritage in her 70s. I am proud of my heritage. But I really don't know much about myself. I'm learning. Ty for who you are. Ty for showing us who we can be. I'm 73 now. I quilt traditional.

I've lived and worked in Japan and have family in Tokyo. There is a TV program called "Who Wants to Come to Japan" that is very popular. I promote music and had the band Teaze make a video for the program and it was accepted but Covid kiboshed the project. The show focuses on people who love Japan and have a keen interest in something Japanese. They then make a video, send it to the producers of the program and if it is accepted, you'll be flown to Japan, filmed and made into an episode. Eric Schweig going to Japan to learn the process of sword making would be an outstanding episode and very popular with viewers. I could arrange this.
