  • The Universe is expanding, increasingly so. Will this persist or will it collapse back on itself? If it does expand forever, what happens to the galaxies? What is the long-term trajectory for the ultimate in collapsed matter, black holes?
    A lecture by Katherine Blundell OBE recorded on 31 May 2023 at Barbican Centre, London
    The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:

    Thank you very much. I have greatly enjoyed all of Dr. Blundell's lectures. I am very sorry that she is leaving, but will hold out hope that she returns with a report on the work she is now setting out to do. [FWIW, I'm a retiree in the central U.S.]

    I have understood more about the universe through Dr Blundell’s lectures than ever before in my 60 odd years on this planet. I thank her and wish her the very best with her Global Jet Watch mission. Brilliant lectures. Thanks to Dr Blundell and Gresham College from Australia.

    It is true. If you pan away from planet Earth, our entire solar system becomes a speck and impossible to even see. Pan out further and our entire galaxy becomes a speck. Eventually the milkly way disappears completely. And this is only the currently observable universe.
    We can only see ~ a hundred billion light-years of diameter. This distance is unfathomable. And to think that it just goes on and on. What else truly disappears into oblivian, how big are your problems ?

      The End of the Universe 2128pm 12.6.23 making vast generalisations and assumptions may just be the issue. Maybe science, like any other trusted source of propagating information and knowledge, should desist from making those assumptions. would that mean they would have to admit they know very little as opposed to one hypothetical notion taking precedence over all other notions????

    Dark Energy: Modern science claims that energy cannot be created nor destroyed. "IF" dark energy already existed in existence, then it should have already done it's thing. "IF" dark energy came into this existence from another dimension, then from what dimension? And then also, can energy leave this dimension? "IF" modern science is wrong and energy can be created in actual reality, can energy also be destroyed in actual reality? "IF" so, what then of existence in this existence?

      The End of the Universe 2131pm 12.6.23 if energy is created from other sources interacting with one another it would suggest it is an organic aspect of the known universe...

      @@JJONNYREPP " if energy is created..."
      It would be interesting how that could actually occur, 'if' true. But then also, what if 'if energy is destroyed'??? What would occur to the universe and our existence then?

    • @acr08807
      @acr08807 Рік тому +1

      @Charles Brightman You're right that energy is not conserved in an expanding universe. "Modern science" is well aware of this, so it does not claim that energy cannot be created or destroyed. Still, the expansion of the universe is slow over short distances, so conservation of energy holds for almost all practical purposes.

    Presenter makes constant reference to previous presentations - Those references are largely a waste of time - She could make far better use of her time by actually covering the topic in earnest, and without the constant self-promotion.
