I first heard your playing on the Fretboard Journal some years ago and every now and then (when I feel the need to hear some pure, awesome music) I go to your channel and listen to your magnificent playing. Thank you Mr Lawlor for making this world a little better place with your music! Greetings from germany!
What a beautiful tenor guitar rendition of this song. Probably the very best tenor guitar arrangment of this song ever, by one of the living legends of the tenor guitar, the musician who first sparked my interest in the instrument over 40 years ago, Mr. John Lawlor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
I listen over and over and I still love it John! It was a pleasure hanging with you at the Tenor Guitar Gathering last year. I'd love to see you out there again my friend.
I was given a '20's regal guitar by a family friend the other day, and had intended to play Irish trad on it. Not anymore. This is so beautiful, heart-wrenching and soothing at the same time, and silky smooth. Incredible, thank you :)
Sublime. If the direction ('s) of my life brought me to this, then something went right. This very attractive melody is best played without the lyrics in this day and age, I imagine. Mr. Lawlor makes the world all come together with this. I've sent this to a couple of UA-cam teachers, (six string) in the hopes that they'll come up with something for the rest of us. But look at the spread John gets with those fingers..
Awwwwww, you guys!!!! We just watched this yesterday and were singing this tune! "If you want to view paradise, simply look around..." even better out of context. I miss you two. More please!love, stefanie
Great stuff my friend! I just got my new custom made Dell Arte' Tenor! I can't put it down. It looks like you are using Fifths tuning CGDA is that correct?
Thanks! Yes. In fifths but dropped down a whole step to Bb F C G.The neck is a regular guitar neck cut in on each side to a four string width. It's a little too long to bring it up to C G D A.
Great arrangement. I inherited a 1963 gibson tenor guitar from my great grandfather. Are there any websites/tutorials online you would recommend? Thanks.
I inherited my grandfather's 59 Harmony Monterey (not in the same league as your Gibson) and haven't found much in the way of how-to specifically for tenor, but if you learn mandolin techniques much of that will apply. I also keep a link to this website handy: massive collection of tenor guitar/banjo chords chordlist.brian-amberg.de/en/tenor-banjo/jazz/ I used to tune GDAE to use my mandolin skills, but when I got my Blueridge I left it CGDA and discovered a whole new instrument. After decades of struggling with the 6-string, tenor in standard tuning is a playground. Find a song you love, learn the basic chords from Brian's site, and goof around. Tenor's the perfect instrument to learn on.
I sure hope what you do gets past on to the next generation. This form of art is sadly disappearing and getting harder and harder to find. Ever consider doing a educational on some of these wonderful chords? Bet you'd be a great teacher!
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I used to hum this as a kid. Such fond memories! Excellent rendition. Thank you!
This is a beautiful hidden gem!

Wonderful...rarely see anyone cover this and to do it with those jazz chords and on an electric tenor? Very rare indeed. Thank you.

Uncle Johnny! Awesome stuff! Oompa Loompas rejoice!
Outstanding! Have you issued a CD?
This one video inspired me to buy and learn Tenor guitar. Still learning and still inspired by your playing. Thanks so much for your gift.
What a fluent style you have. Superb arrangement too. Amazing what you can get out of 4 strings, more than most get out of 6 - or more.
A man of Dao
This is so lush! It reminds me of some of Johnny Smith's solo arrangements on 6-string guitar.
I hope you find time to post more videos. I play chord melodies on mandolin but this is on another level I could only hope to achieve.
Incredible.
Thankyou
Amazing stuff!
Wow! It's not very often I come across something on UA-cam that I would consider a real 'gem' ... This is a gem! Nicely done
I'd call this REAL jazz - spontaneous composition!
Lovely!
somebody send this guy a Zoom recorder or put him in a studio please. That is a compliment, I mean document this in HD ASAP!
This is beautiful man! Thanks for posting this.

Look up his Wives and Lovers under his name on youtube. That's it for me.
Oh yea

What make of string do you use? I just had a d'Addario A string snap as I was putting it on, and I never liked nylon d'Addarios on my CG.
Mr Lawlor, What brand instrument is that? It sounds amazing... Looks difficult to find a good tenor guitar, any help would be greatly appreciated!

This video will be on youtube for a long time- as long as it gets occasional hits.
