    As an American, it’s pretty simple to remember
    Star Alliance - The one with United
    Skyteam - The one with Delta
    OneWorld - The one with American

    • @ClassyWhale
      @ClassyWhale 4 роки тому +97

      It used to be so much more complicated
      Star Alliance was United AND US Airways AND Continental at one point
      Skyteam had Delta AND Northwest AND Continental before it became Star
      and for a little while OneWorld had US Airways before the AA merger
      But now it's all well and good and easy and oh my gosh what is Alaska Airlines doing now

      I don't understand appeal of US airlines to join forces with others. You guys have such specific and enormous market and only advantage is I guess miles if u fly overseas often.

    • @paulsz6194
      @paulsz6194 4 роки тому +30

      Jan Šebek That can be explainedof two words : Feeder Flights. Let’s say someone needs to get from Austin, Texas, to Stuttgart, Germany. You purchase a ticket from Austin, which gets you from Austin to Houston, then after you arrive at Frankfurt, you get a connecting flight to Stuttgart , where Lufthansa flies you from Frankfurt to Stuttgart you collect points under the United Airlines frequent flyer scheme for all the flights. Lufthansa makes a small profit on the flight as well. Also, if a US flight gets delayed or cancelled flying out of Frankfurt to Houston, you can be put on a Lufthansa flight back to the USA, but via a different route to get you back home to Austin, Texas. They will connect you to Austin via a destination that Lufthansa flies to (like Denver for example).

    • @ctx4241
      @ctx4241 4 роки тому +7

      @@paulsz6194 I guess that makes sense for US market, flights there even to smaller airports are vital. For european, you just hop onto EuroCity train from Stuttgart to Frankfurt since Europe is much more tightly packed and public transport more present. But then again, American are usually initiators of these alliances and serving domestic market mainly...makes sense, thanks.

    When I made my frequent flyer status with Air Canada - it changed how I travel!
    Then, Star Alliance made that even better by welcoming me on flights with LOT, Air New Zealand, United, Aegean, TAP, Lufthansa, and SAS as if I was one of their own!

    All the alliances have their positives and negatives. However if I could choose only one I'd pick Star Alliance as it has the best overall coverage. Oneworld is fantastic for transatlantic and trans-pacific though and Skyteam is really useful for inter Asian flights and from Europe to Africa.

    • @a21npilot91

      I wouldn't say so. It is really up to condition. For me SkyTeam wax the best for flights only within Europe but if I fly one day to America (South or North) SkyTeam will be cheapest, highest quality and I will earn miles and XPs. For my potential 2022 and 2023 trips SkyTeam is also the best (unless Low-Cost services will be more than 20% cheaper with luggage).

    One of the reasons budget airlines in southeast Asia requires separate check ins are due to differing check-in procedures. They cut cost wherever possible; some uses barcodes in app, some use pre printed boarding passes where the gate agent scribbles on your name and other info, some print their boarding pass on receipt sized thermal rolls, some shorten their luggage tag by half, some even use serialized tags like tickets(pre printed tags bearing airport code, they tear of the tab, hands it over, the luggage tag has matching serial numbers)

    Living in Canada, Star Alliance is the prevelent one here. I have been gaming the Aeroplan (Air Canada's) points system for years. It was great fun, when Lufthansa and United still had first class on their overseas routes.
    When booking one trip, an exceptionally rude and officious Aeroplan employee decided that (s)he was going to speak to me i a catty tone, and, did so. I did not complain, because (s)he was also incompetent... (s)he did not deduct the points from my account. I flew first class twice on the same points! You could say that I recycled them.

      They are always so expensive tho I’ve never flown with them and I go to Korea almost every year but you seem like you live in LA and I’m sure they have a lot of good options. My route is usually United-Air Canada where I go from Chicago (where I live) to Toronto or some other Canadian city and then to Incheon, so yeah star alliance is my favorite!

    The thing I don't like about these alliances is that you don't necessarily know which airline will actually fly you.
    If I booked a ticket with BA, an airline I've had a mediocre experience with, but was sat on a Royal Air Maroc plane, an airline I've had bad experience with - I'd be pretty annoyed.
    Especially as the prices as not necessarily aligned either. For one flight, many years ago, I had a choice between a BA and a Qantas flight, I went for BA because it was substantially cheaper (£100s). When I got to the airport, it was the same plane, heck I probably could have booked the exact same seat.

      Yes - definitely one tricky part of code shares and itineraries within an alliance. When possible, its good to read through the itinerary and look for "Operated by _____________"

      OneWorld if you’re Australian.

      British Airways/American for transatlantic and US flights.

      @6 - A4 Jai Kartik Mynepalli If you do some research, UAE is a fairly small country and there are no domestic flight services within the UAE, hence EK does not operate their widebody jets for domestic routes. Emirates never needed to join any alliance because the service they offering is having Dubai as a major transfer point. They only need to have certain partners in large countries such as the US and China to transfer their passengers to their final destination and that's exactly what they are doing.

    • @royalpillows7716

      6 - A4 Jai Kartik Mynepalli Emirates doesn’t do domestic flights..That is left to fly Dubai which is a smaller and not widely known airline which is a major partner with emirates that shares the same hub..Either way I don’t believe domestic flights are available as the UAE is a really small country

    The very First Alliance/ Partnership between different Airlines was the Partnership between Northwest Airlines( 2004 merged with Delta) an the Royal Durch Airline KLM in 1989. They do everything like actiallity Alliances. Sharing Flights, Operate under same Flightnumbers, selling Tickets für both Partners, Customer Service . They are the Starter and Shows the Benefits of an Partnership/Alliance Network.
    Other Alliances starts many Years later and Copy this System.

    As a resident in the Philippines i find a bit weird this Philippine Airlines(PAL)not yet joined any of these 3 alliances, StarAlliance, OneWorld or Skyteam. In comparison that's the case with other similar airlines in SouthEastAsia like Thai, Malaysian and Singapore AL. But i do not expect PAL is focusing that much these days about just making alliances due to the challenge of pandemic. But will the airline consider joining any alliance when some day back to the old normal?.

    • @walkrwalkr3622

      I would say Skyteam is the better fit for PAL as they already have an arrangement with Delta. One World has Cathay Pacific and Star alliance has Singapore Airlines which are strong carriers already serving the Philippines (plus United is coming in with direct flights) .. sky team is weaker in Phil

    Turkish Airlines itself flies to 121 countries and is the airline that flies to most countries. Air France is second in that list with 91 countries, while British Airways is third with 82. TK, being partly owned by the state flies to almost every African country, not making much money in the process but being very important in connecting Turkey to African market.
    I think this might explain the high number of countries Star Alliance flies to, rather than its high number of members, while Skyteam carries more passengers annually.
