I don’t think number 6 should be on there. It’s true that it’s disappointing but this is one of the few times Warner Bros should be praised for their actions. They easily could’ve sold the product as it was, but refused to sell something that didn’t meet their expectations. Then rightfully gave people their money back and even apologized. Heck most companies would’ve charged people for the costumes to make up for the lost costs. But not only did they give them to the people who had their orders cancelled…they gave them to the whole public! That’s really commendable so much so that it’s uncanny
It's not commendable when the decision is entirely motivated by weighing the costs of replacing ludicrously fragile statues against outright cancellation. "Sorry, it'd just be cheaper to not send the fucking things at all," is hardly a noble attitude worth praising.
@@NickW855 Or they did the hard maths, realised that the Batmobiles were going to have the Batmobile Edition selling at a loss, and cancelled it without completing the purchase from the manufacturers.

This is the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen, anything is collectible. Collectible doesn’t mean it’s valuable. Is that the message here? Because people don’t collect something to sell it, that’s the point of the collection, do give value to the person collecting it. Dumb take.

On top of the bag debacle, which gets even worse when you find out they gave legit canvas versions to influencers, the helmet itself was also contaminated with toxic mold.
It's annoying when publishers send out inflencer and press packs that have some pretty cool stuff, only for the customers to get meh quality. I recall that there was a cool puzzle box sent out for Skywalker Saga's release.
I can definitely see how that transforming Batmobile would have been unreliable. In fact I bet quality tests showed a strong risk that they would break during transit, and that was what convinced them to cancel it.
I think it might be more that the manufacturing costs of the transforming Batmobile were going to eat too much into the profit margin. Compare the high quality of that Batmobile to just how _cheap_ the gizzits are in every other Collector's Edition.
I was reminded of the F76 collectors edition on your bad pre-order bonus videos. Very glad you covered it here. It's insane that Bethesda did straight up consumer fraud and their first response was "fuck off"
I actually bought one of the Arkham Batmobile editions on eBay. I thought it would just be loose in a basic box but it came in official, premium packaging. It had everything else that was part of the collector's edition, even had the slot where the game would have been. The Batmobile was great, though I understand why they couldn't have shipped it - the transformation only worked after pressing the button a couple of times, and eventually one of the guns got stuck in the out position, so I can't transform it anymore. Looks great on the shelf still

And it probably was too expensive to make to boot.
I would've thought that Dead Island Riptide would've made the list for the bikini torso, but that thing's now apparently enough of a sought-out collectible that it goes for around $300.
That Halo helmet + stand / dvd holder actually looks pretty good to me. Obviously, it would be awesome to get a full-size, wearable helmet, but that's a pretty unrealistic expectation imo. A motorcycle helmet is like $200. A football helmet can be like $500.
I have a suggestion for a future list video. Seven video game villains who got ignored by karma. These villains never actually get punished for their crimes in the game they come from. An example is Viridi from Kid Icarus Uprising, she's responsible for causing just as much death and destruction as Hades but is never actually dealt with by Pit and Palutena. The most they do is defeat some of her soldiers and two of her commanders and destroy her reset bomb factory.
I'm surprised Duke Nukem Forever wasn't on this list. That collector's edition came with a bust, a comic, a hardcover book, and some other things, but then you're stuck owning the game Duke Nukem Forever.
I remember the days when collectors edition stuff just came with the base game as “feelies”. Like the Ultima series with its cloth maps, ankhs, coins, a moon stone, an interview tape, etc. i still have my cloth maps.
I was 16 when Halo 3 came out so I drove my cousin who was 12 to the Hastings at 11:00pm because they were opening at midnight for the release of Halo 3 so we both bought the collectors edition. He was so excited because he thought he would be able to were the helmet but I kept telling it was a scaled down version yet he kept insisting he could make it fit. The look on his face when saw it was just a cover for the stand PRICELESS and for the whole ride home he kept yelling at me to go back so he could get a refund while I could barely drive straight I was laughing so hard
The Saints Row 2 collectors edition was awful. Looked like it came with a fancy replica gun, but it was in fact just a vacuum formed bit of plastic packaging and a crap USB stick.
i don't remember how it was given out, if it was part of the pre order bonus or what, but the desktop skin (or whatever it's called when it changes everything) was pretty cool, it wasn't just a SR2 themed background image it changed everthing, icons, the mouse cursor, the start bar, and whatever else i can't remember.
I have to say I don't have much sympathy for people who bought that Dead Sapce 2 CE. The image pretty clearly showed the plasma cutter to be the size of the disc so that's what I would have expected
I remember that originally CD-Project was considering other poses for Geralt and griffin. They even published photos of them after settling down with the final project and let me tell you, the one of the discarded ones was leagues better that what we got. It basically looked like the griffin was about to get the upper hand, when stricken through the hart by Geralt putting all his mutant strength to push his sword through the beast's chest. Far more dynamic, and menacing. Displaying how hard such fight must have been and how imposing opponent griffins are. In comparison the one we ended up with, looks like a cloddish butchering of an overgrown poultry...

Katarina from Fire Emblem: New Mystery of The Emblem. Maybe it's just I have trouble connecting with the gameplay for New Mystery but it feels really awkward with a mix of some modern mechanics but not really and some issues from the very start of the series that had already been worked out in earlier games but reintroduced because its a faithful Remake of the second half of FE3. She's also just the only character with a plotline(because it's a Remake of a way older game and shes new for the remake) so I personally wasn't connecting with the main plot but I found her plotline really interesting. She's really neat and kind of a snapshot of the more modern writing style for the series.

Thank you for mentioning the Batmobile!!!! Not only did they axe the collectors edition days before the launch, they REFUNDED us the money instead of giving us the other special edition. I got lucky enough to preorder that one at least, but that was the last collectors edition I ever bought. Not only that, Project Triforce called us “butt hurt” after we started complaining on their website and the started banning us. I was SO pissed since I am a collector of batmobiles in general. Now knowing that SOME people got it, I’m even more pissed.
12:00 honestly? That's fine, provided they gave people their money back. They didn't think it was good enough, so they axed it, so they didn't send it out, it shows integrity. I'm just saying, the rest of the entries could've learned something from em
Well, the video title is "you'd definitely want a refund for", so it fits the video... But I agree, if they allowed for full refunds, they did the right thing. Sht happens, projects fail.
More likely explanation is that the corporate entity got the manufacturing costs back from Triforce, did the maths, realised that the Batmobile Edition was going to cost them too much, and just flat-out cancelled the order, leaving Triforce with a bunch of Batmobiles that they can't sell (explaining why the Batmobiles were in the possession of Triforce and not WB when Triforce went bust)
I think that one is forgivable. It's still a cool looking collectable. Now if they had falsely advertised it as human sized, and wearable; that would've been disappointing, but I don't think that was the case.
@@plehis123 Yea, for me it's not that bad as some others on the list. Also as it was mentioned/shown that it was meant to go on the stand. The funny thing is that people actually looked into how much it would've cost to have the can as bags va the nylon and found the difference in cost was very minor so there was the belief they just cut corners to make a greater profit.

I find collector editions to be overall annoying because then i have to make room for all the extra junk. Then there's the cursed collector editions with no game included.
While I now realize that my Geralt statue indeed has a botched face, what was more of a disapointment was the fact, that you could not install the game straight from the DVDs. I had to rip the file from the DVDs and correct the path of the files manually to install the game. I think even if my internet would not have been down at the time, it was still faster than german internet would have allowed to install from GOG.
My band were going to release a Collector's Edition of one of our old albums that is actually shorter. Over the years a couple of the tracks haven't held up that well. We thought it would be funny, but it never happened.
Number six hit home hard, one of the very few collectors editions I actually purchased, only for it to be ripped away. I remember standing in EB Games just staring at the worker who told me that I am not getting the Batmobile that I paid $250 dollars for months in advance.
I remember the gamestop employee was so smug when the Batmobile edition was sold out and told me he would sell me one but I had to pay it off now. I was grinning as I walked in after they were all canceled. 😂
To be fair to the replica plasma cutter, most people don't even look at the scale if it's given. Fewer people would've been upset, yes, but there still would've been a backlash from those expecting one they could fool around with.
9:03 they’re talking about Master Chief being instantly recognizable, but (granted, as someone who plays neither game) I am unable to distinguish Master Chief and Doom Guy from each other without some sort of outside context. @@jacobangel9621i’m 42. The first time i saw Halo i said, “They ripped off the Doom Guy.” 20 years later, its still clear as day they just took Doom Guy and gave him a little more armor.
To be fair the dead space two plasma cutter being smaller than human hand was probably deliberate considering the toy gun laws that many countries have especially in the US where you'd have different states having their own regulations on it and a set of guidelines that would require it to look as ridiculous as possible.
I remember one of the first special editions ever released, the Lunar 1 and 2 remasters for the PS1. They came with little figurines, the soundtracks, some gorgeous hard cover manuals, and 2 had a little medallion like one the characters. I wish I still had them in my possession, but I left them in storage at my sister's house, a whole hemisphere away. 😢
Just to also point out; Dick Grayson in a Batman movie also said that chicks love the car when he stole the Batmobile at a time he and Bruce didn't see eye to eye. So must be true.
I knew about the MvC one and forgot about the Fallout 76 one. Can't believe I forgot about it, too, as the helmet had mold that could just straight-up kill you if you wore it for long enough. An honorable mention goes to Xenoblade Chronicles X. Generally a cool CE, but the USB stick that came with the OST had something on it that would mess with your drive letters, potentially messing up your entire PC. Also, shoutout to Prima's Dark Souls 3 strategy guide, which came with an awful solid piece of plastic that was kind of shaped like an estus flask.
OMG we actually got the Dead Space plasma cutter! We found it hilarious and we still have it and sometimes point it at each other (me and my husband, for context). It's so tiny and dumb, we love it. XD
I had no idea I was supposed to be disappointed by my Halo 3 Legendary Edition. 😅 Teenage me and soon to be 35 year old me still think it looks amazing.
I'm getting flashbacks to Skybound and Telltale's TWD collectors edition... it took them about 3 years, but at least they did compensate people eventually! Lee and Clem sit on my shelf as a constant reminder of the atrocities of: a) the apocalypse b) sub-par paint jobs and c) buying something expensive without first seeing it in person
Speaking as someone who works in the toy industry, that batmobile fiasco reeks of WB putting in the orders ahead of time (factories are hesitant to commit to an order unless it reaches a certain threshold which they can deem profitable for them), so I feel WB put out pre-orders before finalizing the deal with their overseas manufacturers, and then once they had samples and pricing set they must've not had enough pre-orders to justify the manufacturing costs for meeting the quality they were aiming to get - and that was most likely before distribution costs came into play. So they decided to cut their losses, eat the the investment, and most likely destroy whatever allotments they could.
I have that Geralt and it's great! The paint job is far better than that. Plus it's not made of plastic, it's made of polystone like Sideshow collectibles. It's also huge.
The collector’s edition for Mortal Kombat 2011 came with a statue in the UK which looked solid in previews but it turned out to be more like a hollow, plastic, squeaky bath toy. That put me off ever buying a collector’s edition again. To make things worse, the US version got really cool MK bookends that would have been more useful.
Tell you what wasn't disappointing, the Banishers: Ghosts Of New Eden collectors edition. You get a writing journal with pre painted pictures and a feather and some ink. Plus a ghost!..that last one may have just been a coincidence though

Witcher 3 - ...There are no words. 76 - Bethesda: Who wants some health hazards and a plastic bag instead of the promised canvas bag? Marvel vs Capcom - "Infinity Stone? Nah, have an Infinity EGG" Halo 3 - "Hey, see this helmet? Not really a helmet~" Arkham Knight - "Too expensive to make, we give up" Dead Space 2 - Plasma cutter for a child, not for someone old enough to play the game
I'm not sure about other countries, but here in Australia, EB Games actually DID give us a Batmobile for Arkham Knight. Sure, it was the Tumbler. And it was Lego. And it was palm sized......but hey, at least it wasn't a Geralt staue
Thank God I've only got one of these, the Halo 3 one and coincidentally it altered my desire to ever order another pre-order collector's edition of anything.
There wasn't really anything disappointing about the collectors edition of Spacemarines, but I remember my friend being pretty mad, when not only had his pre-ordered collectors edition not arrived at our local store in time and he had to wait an additional 3 hours, but I strolled in with him, without pre-ordering, snatched a limited edition and got some exclusive in-game gear.

It also came with a full size a4 hardback book, steelbook, replica metal Medallion, signed alternate game case, and more. Meanwhile the Spiderman ps4 collectors edition was the same price, it came with the worse steelbook I have ever seen, didn't even have the name on the spine. And a 'mystery' statue that they didn't reveal until a few weeks before launch. It was the same size as a game case - tiny! And that's all it came with!
Duke Nukem Forever's collector edition. It came with the standard art book, statue, some poker chips and dice. BUT, get this, it came with Duke Nukem Forever.
The Fallout 76 Canvas Bag debacle wasn't the only issue of the collector's edition because Power Helmet was also not up to snuff, it looked accurate and you could wear it but it was a health hazard as mould grew inside of it

But not only did they give them to the people who had their orders cancelled…they gave them to the whole public! That’s really commendable so much so that it’s uncanny
Yeah but it was still disappointing for the people who ordered it. Just because it was the right thing to do doesn't mean someone can't be bummed.

Kiss From a Rose and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me over the end titles - if you made it to the end you got a much-deserved treat.
(Plus as we found out just two years later, it could get worse.)
There was a lot of quality on that soundtrack. The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game was a great track as well.
It also gave us Tommy Lee Jones’s hilarious line to Jim Carrey when they first met: “I hate you. I really don’t like you. I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”
TL;DR - Don't buy collectors editions when you could get any random artist online to get you 10x the quality for half the price.
Sweary Jane is even more hilarious than normal Jane 😅
Cue memory of "I can see your generous split."
I got a list for ya: 7 times that companies failed to calm things down. (ME3 original ending backlash, developer response to backlash, backlash to developer response to backlash, developer response to backlash to developer response to backlash, etc.)
76 and Arkham knight were big on that
I think I was 5 when my uncle told me "If it says collectible, it aint"
30 years later it's as true as ever.
Yep. Beenie Babies did not pay for my college education, and Funko Pops won't pay for the next generation.
Agreed. Once publishers try to make things "collectible" you just end up with A LOT of crap.
This is the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen, anything is collectible. Collectible doesn’t mean it’s valuable. Is that the message here? Because people don’t collect something to sell it, that’s the point of the collection, do give value to the person collecting it. Dumb take.
I have an actual US Army issue duffel, or C-bag. Got it from an army/navy store for $20. Its 3 times the size of that nylon abomination.
And for like $1.50 they could've spray painted the text on there with a stencil. Just shoddy execution compounded by corporate greed.
As a guy in the military, they're actually kinda shit for carrying things, too. Put anything even moderately heavy in them and they dig into your hand.
@@daviddaugherty2816for some reason we had a supervisor who insisted we do bag drags with our 72 hour bags every week until he could “treat us like adults”. Not saying it was wrong but there were definitely other ways to assess this… like you know, how good we were at our jobs? But anyway carrying those bags for about a mile to and from work during a korean typhoon was probably the worst way to start and end your day.
I'm not surprised that you'll get a better deal and quality at a military surplus store then a overpriced collector edition set.
@@iowasucks9494 Sounds about right. Treating people like adults is an alien concept in the military. God forbid one of your troops messes up of their own free will. Then it's _your_ fault.
On top of the bag debacle, which gets even worse when you find out they gave legit canvas versions to influencers, the helmet itself was also contaminated with toxic mold.
That was actually a different helmet, one to do with Gamestop.
I remember Andy talking about the bag. Can't remember if he had gotten one or was in the group of disappointed customers who got nylon though.
iirc they sent one to Markiplier for marketing and he wasn't even interested in the game.
Most likely. How many times could one transform the Batmobile before it broke? Too many tiny parts for my liking.
I bought one of the Batmobile editions on eBay and, yes, it did break after a while, so I can see why they couldn't release them officially
it might have been partly due to it being unreliable but i'd wager it was more to do with it being more expensive to produce than they had expected.
At least they were honest enough to cancel it and refund the money instead of shipping junk like the other entries.
It's insane that Bethesda did straight up consumer fraud and their first response was "fuck off"
Very surprising to learn that Bethesda's legal department missed all the classes on contract law.
This, I guarantee, is the _real_ reason it was cancelled.
At like 2:20 I thought she was gonna say "don't boo me, you wrote it!"
That would've been a really sick last-minute burn
I would've thought that Dead Island Riptide would've made the list for the bikini torso, but that thing's now apparently enough of a sought-out collectible that it goes for around $300.
That one was covered in an earlier video about most disturbing items in collector's editions. (Linked in the video description above.)
Say what you will about the thing, they promised a bikini torso and they delivered a bikini torso
See, that one isn't disappointing, it's just...tasteless. By all accounts it was exactly as advertised, for better or for worse.
That statue of Geralt makes him look like he's been on a three month drug binge, using his eyeballs as veins to inject said drugs....
Anyone else hate that trope?

I'm surprised Duke Nukem Forever wasn't on this list. That collector's edition came with a bust, a comic, a hardcover book, and some other things, but then you're stuck owning the game Duke Nukem Forever.
And to think, for most games releasing a collector's edition without the actual game is a sin...
Hearing Jane say "Eggs? They look like eggs, glowing eggs" in the most British accent possible is forever burned into my memory 😂😂😂
Also how big could they assume it to be for the price.
ah 5:05 the great canvas famine of 2018. dark times
Lmao
I remember that originally CD-Project was considering other poses for Geralt and griffin. They even published photos of them after settling down with the final project and let me tell you, the one of the discarded ones was leagues better that what we got. It basically looked like the griffin was about to get the upper hand, when stricken through the hart by Geralt putting all his mutant strength to push his sword through the beast's chest. Far more dynamic, and menacing. Displaying how hard such fight must have been and how imposing opponent griffins are.
In comparison the one we ended up with, looks like a cloddish butchering of an overgrown poultry...
Me at the start of the video : that Bethesda "canvas" bag is going to be on the list isn't it
Me at the end of the video: yay a Producer Jon mention, good to know he is still around with the new studio

Sometimes a game completely sucks EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE CHARACTER. I'd love to see you do a video on The 7 Characters Who Carry Their Games
Ohh… like Varric from Dragon Age 2. Granted over the years DA2 has grown to be considered a (very flawed & unfinished) masterpiece but yeah. At the time Varric was one of the few things about the game received positively.
To me it's Ciri for Witcher 3.
I worked on the Batgirl movie and ohhhh boy that joke…that hurt…
You guys actually made me give my Witcher 3 statue a closer look. In all of 9+ years I'd never noticed the bad paint job on his face; I've always just looked at his armour and swords and the griffon, which are quite detailed and look good imo 😆
Same. :D

Wow, makes me glad Triforce went out of business and honestly maybe the game dev had good reason to terminate their business arrangement with them.
As a Portuguese and therefore a cod fan, I confirm we love a cantine that you can actually use
Was always disappointed that the Halo 3 Legendary edition helmet wasn't wearable
I didn't even get that and I was disappointed.

I think that one is forgivable. It's still a cool looking collectable. Now if they had falsely advertised it as human sized, and wearable; that would've been disappointing, but I don't think that was the case.

The funny thing is that people actually looked into how much it would've cost to have the can as bags va the nylon and found the difference in cost was very minor so there was the belief they just cut corners to make a greater profit.

To be fair to the replica plasma cutter, most people don't even look at the scale if it's given. Fewer people would've been upset, yes, but there still would've been a backlash from those expecting one they could fool around with.

I knew about the MvC one and forgot about the Fallout 76 one. Can't believe I forgot about it, too, as the helmet had mold that could just straight-up kill you if you wore it for long enough.

The witcher 3 collectors edition is one of the beat sets of all time. It was only £130 and came with that huge polystone statue, which BTW not all the faces looked like that.

The Fallout 76 Canvas Bag debacle wasn't the only issue of the collector's edition because Power Helmet was also not up to snuff, it looked accurate and you could wear it but it was a health hazard as mould grew inside of it
