About Dāv Kaufman
Hey Everyone, I’m Dāv Kaufman. I’m a film producer and author and I travel around the world filming amazing reptile, fishing and animal adventures! I’m also an ardent conservationist and reptile breeder, specializing in New Caledonian geckos, bullsnakes, hognose snakes, and ball pythons, especially pied morphs. I hold a BA in History and Media Studies and graduated Summa Cum Laude. The natural looking enclosures were awesome and so was the star wars one, but they all blended together a bit... yours stood out! But I have a feeling you'll be right and the forest floor one is gonna win... but hey, then you get to come back next year! ;)

Your set up actually reminds me of the red creep from War of the Worlds, or The Color out of Space by HP Lovecraft. Takes a certain eye to notice it 👌

Dav, your idea was AWESOME. I've had a lot of success doing this with more of an armature--you want to use the wire to make a more 3D form to sit under your foam, rather than just a hump of wire, more of a coil. I loved that you stuck it through even when you felt things weren't quite working out!

On the off chance that you try making something similar in the future. You can form foil and cover it with spray foam so you use less material.

Dãv I must say I truly loved your enclosure. I wish you could've put the stalactites on the top. I think that would have looked insane. You all did a great job.
With you getting to first hand see many of these reptiles in person around the world, I think you have great insight on enclosures :)
Yours was very cool, whether it wins or not- it reminds me very much of the Frazetta Era fantasy art I used to find in my Dad's art books, and then studied in school... as well as all over fantasy novel covers! It would look really Metal with some tarantulas in it.
This looks so fun. Makes me want to buy a new enclosure just to start building one like this.
The cave idea is brilliant. I’ve screwed wood pieces hanging down from the ceiling before to give that “stalactite” feel.
Love the enclosure! Reminds me of the dinosaur fight scene when you ride the Disneyland railroad. But did you know, great stuff actually makes a black spray foam and using that would’ve saved you a step?

I've been brainstorming my enclosure for a corn snake, and one idea was a volcano theme. Those spray foam rock pillars you made would be perfect lava rock!! I've never seen anyone do that before and it looks really unique!

Honestly, this reminds me a little of H. G. Wells' classic science fiction novel 'The Time Machine'. You know, the farthest future one where the sun has become a red giant? I read that book decades ago, so I can't remember if the protagonist saw any life at this stop, but the thought of having Dubia roaches clamoring over a human skull would be so chillingly apt. I've always read that roaches would outlive humanity.

Cool enclosure Dãv. You need to incorporate your shades in the next one! Possibly auction off your 'African Pair' of shades to charity or U.S.A.R.K.
I think yours was the most unique! I really wish I could have voted for everyone on the placement i'd give instead of picking the "best" because it was so so hard to choose. My faves were yours, Adam's, Lukes & Garden State Tortoise! I think i'd love something in your enclosure like, idk, lava dripping from the roof or smthn, smthn to fill that empty space up top mainly. Still so cool!
Expanding foam is tricky. I've built enclosures given it the time to expand did what I wanted and got it perfect, only to see some parts expanded extra overnight ALso the stalactites could be placed on a fold-up door to hide the lights and stuff you need to put on top of the enclosure, The enclosure you designed belongs in a museum, but I could see it displaying cave insects or even cave geckos,
Such a challenge to vote even an enclosure that comes in last would be #1 in any museum.

Dav what you really needed was a partner that has some skill with an exacto knife because a cave build with stalagmites/stalactites would actually look really neat. A good background making the cave look like it goes farther in would have really brought that together! Come back next year and knock that idea out of the ballpark!

I liked your original idea but maybe if you come back next year try doing the stalagmite and the Stalatight again but put the silicon on the background so the background looks like for cave makes it pop out a little bit and then you can decorate the enclosure to look like a cave

Next time use balloons for caves or hide spots inside the foam….once dry pop the balloons and have your spacing! Maybe that can help you achieve your cave idea easier and use less foam

I have dubias and i live in canada. Im pritty sure u just cant import or bring them across the border, but as to owning them or having them in possesion i dont think its illegal. Dubias are in canada just gotta put need dubias on kijiji and you’ll find them
