See the look on Judy’s face she loved dancing with gene she was enjoying it and it made her happy which considering what she went through is no mean feat
What a great dress, cleverly designed to pull the focus. Nice to see her dancing, too; I think people forget she could cut a rug with the best of them.
I think the orange lines on the back that go in at the waist and then back out further down were an attempt to de-emphasize that Judy had gained a lot of weight at this point and was comparatively plump, for her.
Over the years, Summer Stock has grown in importance. It's a movie that entertains no matter how many times you watch it. Everyone delivers the goods, but Garland is first rate throughout.
@@susanlloyd7395 you seem to feel I wasn’t giving Gene Kelly any credit here. He’s great too but was primarily a dancer who also sang and acted. Judy was primarily a singer who learned to dance and act. They were both great to me but Judy was especially good here.
Of all the years I have seen Judy in that little film set over the rainbow, I had no idea that she was such a talented dancer. What a great sequence with two epic talents. Gene and Judy really set the stage on fire.
This dance scene is so good...Judy is the one I watch in it....she keeps up with Gene step for step! She was so very talented....singer, actress, dancer....never be anyone like her again!
I love the fact gene looks shocked at Judy dancing he knows how great she is there a perfect match they did it in for me and my gal and now summer stock, he and Charles Walters pulled Judy through this movie she was at her lowest and he did it as a favour to Judy he was marvellous
Gene Kelly said that Judy Garland was a natural dancer who could learn dances very quickly. She was not a trained dancer yet learned her steps and performed her dances as well or better than any trained dancer.
Her smile at 3:35 as they promenade down the center of the floor is so joyful! So full of heart. That dance is phenom. Wish I had an 1/8th of that ability.
I so love watching this Portland Fancy dance with Garland and Kelly. They are so magical in this number. Gets me in a great mood every time I watch it. Talent like this just doesn't exist today.
Isn’t it amazing how she keeps up with Gene Kelly in the barn dance. Both Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire said that they could show her a routine and she could do it. I have watched Summer Stock over and over again and have loved each minute of the movie and loved it more each time I watched it. I love all of Garlands movie but have my favorites. Summer Stock, In the Good Old Summertime, Lily Mars, For Me and My Gal are among my favorites; I can’t get enough of them.
This brings back many memories. When I lived in San Francisco in the late 70s the Strand or Castro theaters would show movies like this on the big screen. It was magical to see these big, colorful, fun musicals like people experienced them during the MGM years. I think Summer Stock is underrated. I love it!
Judy was underrated as a dancer. Gene Kelly was an athletic dancer, very different from the Fred Astaire romantic type dancer. Judy picked up Kelly's choreography immediately and could match him step for step. She also had a great time doing it. I have to also give credit to the costume designer, Walter Plunkett, for Judy's dress in this sequence which flowed with her turns and contrasted with Kelly's close jeans and shirt.
everytime I watch Judy there is always something else another layer, something more to be seen or heard. if you watch another other performer being and doing a dance challenge, it is simply back and forth for a number of steps, then the two performers do steps together, then a big finale. Watch Judy before she and Gene dance the same steps together, she is staring at Gene so intently as if she is looking at the steps for the first time, and when she gets to the together part she knows the audience is so caught under her magic spell of they believe she is seeing and doing these steps for the first time, that we are totally unaware that she no longer looks directly at Gene to see what the steps are. Judy was so brilliant of an actress, she knew how to create, and build an audiences suspension of belief so everything she did was 100% bought and believed by the audience.
Agree a thousand per cent. Judy was a spectacular talent...and during that dance scene you watch Judy...her talent and charisma just jump off the screen at you!
What actress singer during this time could do better than Judy in this dance sequence? No one i can honestly say. A critic called Judy "a little Mozart of song and dance" and it certainly applied❤
I'm always amused to see Judy forcefully extend her arms and glare at Gene at 1:29 in an attempt to get him back under control after he's busted loose for the first time. I also like her expression and and shoulder-shrug when she gives up and just joins in with a grin at 2:06.
I'm sure this movie was hell to make for all concerned, but boy was it worth it! You honestly cannot take your eyes off of Judy, and she was still in great voice here and looked healthy, despite all of the behind the scenes drama.
LOVE THIS!!!!!! MGM magic. Oh catch it at 02:50 and out.........!!!!!!!! Work Gene and Judy!!!!! (uh..the scuff marks from their shoes leave marks on the floor...that...disappear somehow by the end of the shot, lol.)
Great clip. The contrast in Judy Garland's appearance here versus her famous "Get Happy" clip is striking. During filming she had weight problems and other issues that really were burning her bridges in the industry. "Gat Happy" was filmed as an additional scene after the movie had wrapped up filming and she had been using the time to lose weight, get back in shape mentally and the difference was amazing. "Get Happy" probably saved her career at that point.
Judy Garland was great in this, a triple threat. She could sing, dance and act, her talent was immeasurable. But damn! She was only 27 years old when this was filmed. The drugs, the booze, and emotional distress aged her beyond her years. She could easily pass for 35/40 here. Which isn't old, but it isn't 27 either.
Kelly and Garland. It doesn't get better than that.
So dreamy seeing those two together on screen.
See the look on Judy’s face she loved dancing with gene she was enjoying it and it made her happy which considering what she went through is no mean feat
Another example of the viewers eyes being on Judy Garland and no one else. She had the greatest stage presence!
Judy Garland is dancing with one of the greatest dancers ever and the only one you watch is Judy Garland.
The Camera was in love with that woman.
😊😊
Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers but my eyes go to Judy every time.

Can't get enough,LITERALLY,these two had outstanding talent/chemistry.
So true. And their evident joy in working with one another is infectious!

Almost step for step and he choreographed it to her.
This is my absolute favorite sequence of all of her films
Almost step for step.

Back when REAL talent existed.
Look how she holds on to him she really needed him
She wasn’t a dancer but matches gene step to step it’s a incredible routine he supported her all the way

Even though Gene didn’t want to do this movie he supported her till the end they loved dancing together they are great to watch so exuberant

Nope gene is better!! But Judy did great

When Judy's hem hikes up and shows her legs here 2:12 , they actually look better- to me, anyway- than after she lost weight at the end of the film.
