Hope you liked it! Whitby is such a charming little coastal town and honestly every Brit loves just going there for a day or longer to just stroll around the charming streets, eat theist fish and chips and immerse oneself into the sea sound and the view which is indeed incredible! It's the prettiest on a nice sunny day so hope you'll be luckier than us 😍🌞

  • @NorthernWayfarer-Alice

Dracula arrived in the UK via Whitby. He took the form of a dog when the ship came into Whitby and ran up to the abbey ruins where he lay low. Later he moved down to London. Bram Stoker chose Whitby because he was staying there and it made an impression on him.
You aught to stop off at Berwick some time. Lots of nice little shops along Bridge Street and the Turkish Delight ice cream from Sugar Mountain is to die for. It is just a small town and you could probably combine a visit there with some of the nearby coastal villages. But if you are looking to do a fish 'n' chips tour of the UK then you need to come back Newcastle way and visit Seaton Sluice.

Always order scraps when I buy my F&C from the Magpie - and I usually go further along the pier to eat them - the end of the pier has a protected area, and less Seagulls.
Glad to see you showing the delights of Whitby Fish and Chips for the world to see - I grew up around here - and only realised how good they are when I had to move away for work, and discovered in my international working journey that nothing tastes as good as Whitby F&C.

Dracula came ashore in Whitby as per Bram Stoker’s novel. I grew up in Robin Hood’s Bay, brilliant place to grow up in back in the 80s into the early 90s. Sadly a lot of the old village are now second homes and holiday rentals. It was a thriving community when we were kids. Went to school in Whitby, it’s a well kept town to be fair.

@@JayandKarolina You must visit TheHoly Island of Lindisfarne, but check out the tide times as the road is covered by the sea twice a day. You can also park on the mainland near the causeway and walk barefoot across the Pilgrims way over the sands, marked by the poles. Takes a while though! Bamburgh and its Castle is also a must. If your into Harry Potter then a visit to Alnwick Castle is a must also. Enjoy!

Two Robin Hood's Bay hidden gems:
A lot of the houses on that bank running in from the slipway at Robin Hood's Bay had secret passages running between them to facilitate the import of smuggled goods up the hill.
In the 1970s, there was a local yacht-racer who liked to win bets on whether he could drive his Lotus Esprit from the pub at the top of the banks down to the bottom, around, and back up again in top gear without stalling or changing gear! Such a 1970's macho man thing to do!

I live in York and always return home with kippers from Fortunes Smokehouse. You can go inside and see the kippers suspended in pairs in the old Victorian smokehouse building.
In the north of England and Scotland, people prefer haddock with their fish and chips, whereas down south cod is favourite.

Always protect your fish n chips from seaguls. They dive bomb very craftily over your shoulder. I wasn't at all impressed by the fish n chips from the Magpie. The chips were too heavy to finish and the haddock was insipid. Two good fish restaurants in Scarborough are Wackers and Mother Hubbards. Both up in the town centre and never fail to impress.

Unfortunately, Robin Hoods bay suffers from holiday homes like so many small coastal towns and locals are being priced out of having a home in their local area. Captain James Cook sailed from Whitby to Portsmouth as he had learned his maritime training locally and was asked to do 3 explorations around the World which each lasted 3 years each time. He lost no crew to the then problem of scurvy by feeding his crews citrus to counter it. His maps he made of eastern Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania were so good they were still being used till the 1960's! Whitby fish & chips are the best in the UK.❤ You should have got 1 haddock and 1 Cod. Unfortunately this year the jet stream across the Atlantic has bent down between Britain and Ireland this year bringing fronts across the Atlantic instead over the top of Scotland so we have had more unsettled weather.

This year the Dubai government seeded clouds to drop their rain load in the city area to help the growth of vegetation and bingo our summer has been unsettled again. ( other countries in europe have been flooded too) So lets see how the French Olympics does weather wise. ( I do not know if they have seeded clouds though)

If you eat outside you are just tempting the birds to take an easy feed. When I grew up in Scarborough we never ate out of doors, but had our fish & chips inside the cafes. In the 50s-60s in was considered uncouth to eat out of doors, except for a proper picknick. The birds have become much more of a nuisance since people got so messy with food & rubbish everywhere. No it's not always windy at Whitby any more than anywhere else. Dracula is fictional. Humans have invaded the natural home of the birds, & stolen most of their fish, they just are trying to survive. You haven't seen Scarborough when it's busy. It certainly isn't relaxed. You just hit a quiet day, with kids at school etc. At weekends & high summer it is totally packed with tourists. There is no such animal as a seagull. There are birds that live near the sea , including Terns, Puffins, Gannets, Guillimots etc, & there are Gulls. These are not the same thing, & a 'seagull' is not a real thing.
