  • MORE THAN JUST A HOBBY!
    This is me enjoying every winter with my Hangar 9 Carbon Cub radio controlled airplane, 2,3m, 5kg, RCG 20cc, with homemade skis.
    A longer video than average because I wanted to highlight that this can be more than a hobby, it can be a guide to a better lifestyle by teaching us to return to nature, which we have left, with all it's benefits.
    Fresh air, outside exercises, walking bearfoot on the dirt listening to the sounds of birds while the Sun gives us life and positive energy, silence and inner peace watching the landscapes, the joy and freedom that all those things gives us while doing what we love to do. That's what my video is about.
    In the second part of the video, assembly aspects of the plane are shown.
    After posting the demo video of my Cub a while back, this is the first video of a series that will includ winter and summer flying with the gas setup and electric setup, details of the flying field like the beauty of nature, setup, plane assembling, low passes, high speed passes, multiple cameras, etc.
    Cameras are:
    Sony HDR Ax53,
    Turnigy HD(SJ4000),
    cel phone full HD camera
    hand held, head mounted, onboard and ground camera.

      Thank you! I'm sure yours are as awesome as mine when shown in the right video. Why two? One gas and one electric? It's been a while now that mine is electric powered...a couple of videos with it too, including one with a nice electronic engine sound system.

    Nice!
    Back in 2010 I bought a 30cc nitro planes cub and made skis out of thin door-skinning plywood. Total blast!

    The video was a lot of fun, camera shots were real similar to the full size plane when i was flying a piper cub 50 years ago.
    later on in the 80s i flew RC on skiis. Bring back memories because i dont have the time or money any longer. Thankyou for that, very well done

      Thank you! Towards that feeling of peace please also check my other C.Cub video with electric engine during summer. It pops up at the end of this video or it can be found clicking on my name and hit videos. Glad to hear it creates the feeling I intended. A little too much high speed pases at the begining though..not very scale like but learnd my lesson.

    I fly some simple electric slow flyers for all the reasons you mentioned; disconnecting from our daily toils and distractions to reconnect with nature and our own consciousness. That's nice that you heave it close too! Mine is at about 1km from my apartment. I also feel the need and do switch to simple smaller electrics sometimes and recently made this Cub and also a Zlin from gas to electric. Regarding the field and nature, for over a year now I use my flying field also for daily running with my brother, bearfoot walks all year long including in snow and sungazing. It's a thrill! Cheers!

      Thank you! The skis didn't catch the market somehow I don't know why. When you see the plane coming on landing, and on the last flare you see the rear part of the skis touching the ground and their front coming down, as the springs that keeps them level with the fuselage, get tension, and the plane satles on them, there is nothing like that with anything else.

    How do you keep the skis from looping all the way around? Curious on the mechanism that limits the skis movement. Appreciate it if you can reply!

    • @Seneslau07
      @Seneslau07  4 роки тому +1

      The skis are made from toilet sink mask, a sort of plastic that covers the pipes in old style toilets. This plastic has the benefit of being not just one plastic sheet but a comb structure, which when, cutted in two sheets, it remain on each sheet the ribs. Those ribs are ideal to attach the reinforcements. Early on I used to cut from aluminium sheet the reinforcements, but now I find to be easier to make them from ply, which I warnish and paint to be waterprof. A spring and three pieces of 2mm steel wire (like from a bike wheel spoke, servo control wire, etc) they make the end movements of the skis and flexibility. Mentaining it paralel with the fouselage in flight, but alowing it to drop the rear when on the ground and the plane drops the rear of the fuselage too (this time the spring stretches). Maybe there are more simpe projects out there if this one seems to complicated. I love them because of that :) and always enjoy the snow. Please visit my facebook page where I've just made an album with many photos and some text about the skis. I hope they will help you imagine how they work. But if you have any questions we can discuss them. ua-cam.com/users/redirect?v=mETIrYr5NNE&redir_token=zHIcStv6ctNNs6fxCe9VYWEa2898MTU3NzMwODM2M0AxNTc3MjIxOTYz&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FFlying-Jackal-115490616487481%2F

      I'm glad you liked it. Thank you!. Well I don't think they make engines that small in 4-cylinder boxer type not even on methanol. Boxer gas engines of 20cc 2-cylinder do exist but I don't know how well they work at that size, I was thinking about that in the past. There are also 4 stroke boxer engines. Annyway I've switched to electric power after a crash due to the high voltage wire being cut and interfeared with the radio signal.

I love the fact I have not seen any videos of it's kind anywhere, or I should say with all the RC videos I have watched. Thank you! Glad to hear that. Thing is I have a style of my own that instead of filming one day and make a video out of it, I choose to film maybe one year on multiple ocasions, with different camera angles and then I wayt to get the courage to stay in front of the pc tens of hours and transform tens of videos totaling a few hours in a 15-25 min video.
      Feel free to check my channel for a few more videos like this, with the same plane, including with electric power in winter and summer, with an electronic engine sound module that I consider to be great, and other..
      I'm thankfull to have found a way of enjoying this hobby during the winter too. And the Cub is a fantastic platform for that, you can't have the same feel with an acrobat on skis that's for sure.

    I would suggest putting a remote starter and a remote choke on that playing it makes things a lot easier. I have it on two of my gas models and it's fantastic. While flying you can cut the engine and then restart it when you're in the air people will think it's a dead stick haha. It's very inexpensive approximately 110 dollars. It takes about 25 minutes to put in. Just a suggestion you'll have a lot of fun with it, and save your fingers or hand. When people see it at the field they going to want to know where did you get that looks great it's so cool.

      I've thought about that since I've saw on youtube a DLE 30cc with electric starter. I don't know if there is much room left in the small cowl of the Cub for that starter kit which for me doesn't matter anymore because I've made it electric powered now for a wile and love it. Thanks for the tip!

    At 2:16 he looks at a sheet of paper. I am just getting into the hobby of gas planes and was wondering if that was a fuel mixture chart or a temperature and mixture chart or what it was? My follow up would be where can I find one online and how should I change my mixture for different climates? The problem with the planes I’m working on is that they are. Both 30 years old and have no registration numbers I can see on the engine or the glow plug. I use 20% nitro fuel currently and run relatively lean although I have been told it’s better to run a bit rich. If anyone can enlighten me that would be great. I have to say warming up and hand propping an engine for 30 mins after fully taking it apart and cleaning it is so worth the feeling you get when the engine catches and spools to action for the first time since the late 80s. Love the hobby and hope to continue. I am still fixing up the plane and am yet to fly but I will probably make a maiden voyage sometime next week.

      Hi, yes I have to check my homemade mixture cardboard because I don't want to leave much mixed fuel at the end of the day and need to know how much oil do I need to the amont of gas that I add to the one already in the bottle. I can't say about methanol because I don't use it. As for gas I use 25:1 mineral for break in and later 40:1 synthetic.

      Congrats on reviving such old engines! I'm sure that putting them back together gives a great feeling of being part of a nice machine. The mixture list is nothing more than the mixtures I mentioned, at different gas quantities so I don't have to do the math at the field each time.

    Does the engine charge the batteries while running so you don’t lose servo control if the battery drains fast in cold weather?

    • @Seneslau07
      @Seneslau07  Рік тому +1

      No it doesn't charge them. The batteries were two life of 1100mA wrapped in a few mm of foam to isolate them.

      Thank you! The engine is a RCG 20cc. The carb being in the back, very close to the firewall, required some interesting shape wires around the fuel tank to the gas and choke servos but they worked fine. The power was enough.

    Great video, is the throttle servo in the suggested position and where did you put your choke servo? Thanks

    • @Seneslau07
      @Seneslau07  3 роки тому

      Thank you! That was a pain in the ass to do..took me a couple of days. I've mounted the throttle and choke servos one side and the other of the fuel tank at the back of it, in front of the first seat. The hard part was to route the pushrods so that they will go besides the tank and then in front of the firewall being bend at about 90 degrees towards the middle of the firewall, then again 90 so they will pass through the holes in the firewall to the arms of the carb. the thing was...when they were pushing the carb arms, the bend part of the pushrods that was paralel to the firewal no to touch and push against the firewall...like I said, wasn't easy but it worked. More space would have been great, in the engine compartment too. I can't think of other solution. I've searched the forums for pictures of 90 degrees arms mounted on the carb so that the throttle and choke can be activated from totaly different angles so that I could mount the servos on the firewall but couldn't find a better solution in my case, maybe others did. Good luck though! Now that I have it on electric power is a blessing. When I took all the electrics, mechanics and adapters from the plane to switch it to electric, I've filled a big house table to my surprise and undestood why I've worked so much on it.. I also have pictures of it on my fb page, album Carbon Cub..take a look. facebook.com/Jackal.Astro.Pilot/

    Oh goodness, such an awesome vid! 😊
    I used to have a RCG 20. Starting was no problem but I could hardly tolerate the amount of vibration coming from the single cylinder.
    It was very much of a bone shaker especially on higher throttle. Tried ignition timing in the range of 22° to 30° BTDC; set too low, rpm begun to drop and exhaust noise went up.
    How is the level of vibration of your engine?

    • @Seneslau07
      @Seneslau07  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Mine RCG 20 also has high level of vibrations. I also worked with the timing, around the levels you wrote. At some rpm the wing struts resonate making an annoying sound, I had to put some glue around the bolts that come out of them. I loved the full flaps low speed passes at idle...the sound was like the real deal. I had the same engine on an Seagul Zlin 50, 1,72m, 5kg. The Zlin has some horizontal stab reinforcements, and man..those things droved me crazy. They were plywood and CA hinges at the ends, one end going through the fouselage and the other side to the stab. I think that two out of thre flying days at the field, one of them broke from engine vibrations. I've changed the material, same thing. Now I've made the Zlin and also the Cub electric powered and I like them. I've made the Cub electric after one sever crash, a vertical dive from about 6m after loss of control becase of the EIS high voltage cable being cut from the cowl edges. Well, we have to see the positive side in everything so I don't regret it happend. Although I needed some days to belive that the Cub might fly again, this gave me the oportunity to know it better by putting it back togeter. I always wondered how stable would be the onboard images if it would be electric. I guess the Univers wanted to sow me...and boy they are awesome.
