Taking a more neutral standpoint in the China/America tension is a very good & potentially powerful position. If we signed into AUKUS we would loss our right to question AUKUS actions & loss /weaken our relationship with China to talk the situation down. As a neutral voice we have the position to take a negotiationary roll in the conflict being able to talk equally to both sides in desecualtion rather than being forced to support AUKUS by agreement (remember there are always hidden strings in these agreements the public are not allowed to know). NZ is too small & can't afford to run a military as many people want & it should be run as a support/rebuilding roll, NOT a combat roll. Finally, I can't remember where I heard it but; You can't have peace talks if you keep poking guy on the other side with a stick, you can only talk peace if you offer your empty hand across the table in friendship.

You don't have to worry, N Z wont be invited. Clarke needs to realise that yes diplomatic premises may not be the best target in the world, but to say IF THAT diplomatic premises provide succor to genuine terroist orgnisations that they are NOT a genuine target is absurd.

    • @KlausBahnhof
      @KlausBahnhof Місяць тому

@HenriHattar Your comments on AUKUS are completely wrong. The US is actively attempting to coerce New Zealand to join.
You're also wrong about the Zionist bombing of Iran's consulate. Under International Law, it is never permitted to attack diplomatic premises.
I've read your other comments here, and every single one is factually incorrect.
Put bluntly: you don't know what you are talking about.

@@HenriHattar International law decrees that embassies are 'inviolable'. With terrorist exceptions & during civil wars Embassies have been free from attacks since the law was introduced in 1963. All Nations know that if they attack an embassy their own embassies can come under attack & even America has refrained from attacking embassies they suspect are holding wanted terrorists for fear their embassies & thereby their diplomates could be endangered. Embassies providing shelter to terrorist can be surrounded & effectively put under siege until the wanted person moves outside the embassies protection.

Since the end of WW2 serious strategic experts, generals, air Marshalls and heads of the defence departments in both the UK and US know that only long range aircraft and air forces can provide serious conventional defence and deterrence for NZ and Australia. That was Douglas MacArthurs advice to the Australian government.Forget buying new aircraft carriers or cruisers from the UK the only defence for Australia and New Zealand is American airpower and the RAAF. Churchill and most US and UK MOD officials regarded the Navy as a sunset industry and aircraft carriers even in 1948 or 1950 as targets. Serious US and Pacific defence plans for the defence of Australia and NZ and containment of the Russia and China has been to counter Russia and China's 9 dash line and inner and outer defence lines occupying 88 percent of the Sth China Sea has since 1950; to develop Island chain perimeter lines as static land US aircraft carriers. So Fiji, Tonga, Solomon's and the North and South Island are US static aircraft carriers and ships and armies are secondary, local and support given the small numbers NZ and Australia can provide.

Ever pragmatic, I've always liked and respected Helen Clark's worldview and leadership stance. What I heard her saying here today made common sense. We don't need to be getting involved with AUKUS. I do agree that if we do go down into that rabbit hole we might end up biting into more than we can chew. We are part of the Anglo Five-Eyes intelligence agreement. We should maintain the neutrality of a Southern Pacific Switzerland and garner a reputation for following and advising others to take the path of peace. If we used more reason over reacting too soon to our emotional drives we might actually advance farther and sooner as an emerging humanity. And no, it is not weakness to shun being a party to a bellicose polity, either via our own, or someone elses.

    • @BRUCE_the_MOOSE_

Always amuses me when some advocates NZ become the Switzerland of the South Pacific. So are we going to have full mandatory military conscription and ongoing training afterwards. Also, have those citizens armed and ready like they are in Switzerland. Switzerland also has a highly elaborate defense system constructed into it's borders, including underground tunnels and military bases. It also has highly advanced ground and air defense services, with missiles and fighter aircraft.
We have virtually none of that. That is why Switzerland can afford to have a neutral defense policy. We can't, because we never invested in an independent defense strategy.

@@greggiles7309 I was always was a strong supporter of the P3 squadron and P8 acquisition. I offered myself to the RNZAF to assist in ensuring the purchase NZs most significant acquisition went ahead under the Arden Peters government. I played a role in cooperating with the RNZAF officers, journalists and Americans in making it go ahead against all odds. The P8s, their base facility and support facilities are a serious addition to ANZUS forces in the Pacific. The RNZN tanker and support ship HMNZS Aotearoa which Don McKinnon and the RNZN accepted USN advice as the most useful ship contribution NZ could make to the US and Western defence and of more than symbolic value as it equipped to refuel USN Guided missile destroyers a demanding role.
I have never actually met Helen Clark deliberately missing several opportunities to meet her in the early 1980s as her left wing position would have compromised my position as a commentator and feature writer I did however discuss some issues with her on the phone and in a sense advise her and anyone else against participation in the RAN Collins sub programme which Muldoon had signed memos of understanding about. I was opposed to nuclear power not nuclear weapons at the time and it was obvious Clark was both dishonest and only interested in destroying both NZ and Australia's ANZUS relationship in 1983-84.Anzus was signed in 1951 during the Korean war by which time the US and USSR already had hundreds of nuclear weapons and the presumption of the ANZUS treaty as spelt out by Dulles in discussions about the treaty in Wellington and Canberra in 1951 was that direct physical defence provisions for NZ were not required in the age of nuclear deterrence and ANZUS and the associated and linked Radford Collins are therefore primarily about maritime surveillance zones and defence of Pacific seaplanes, airlanes and communication cables from NZ and Australia to the US and Japan and maintaining backup sea lanes south of Australia. As JF Dulles explained to the US Senate ANZUS was essentially an idealigical joint commitment to containing the 'common danger' of Russian and Chinese communism with US defence policy centred on protecting West Germany and Japan by in the Pacific developing island chain defences. ANZUS in Dulles view was the realisation of Theodore Roosevelt's plan and all US Naval planning in the first half of the twentieth century to incorporate NZ and Australia within the US Sphere of influence and under the Monroe Doctrine. And in reality in 1941,1951 and 2024 NZ and Australia are so small and defenceless we have no choice.

Overall, very good interview. Good questions and fairly diplomatic and sage answers from Helen Clark. At the end of the day, though, we have a military in crisis and not fit for purpose in a world that is looking increasingly unstable and hostile. That is the reality, and to pretend nothing is happening and not picking an alliance, I don't think is a smart decision. Alliances like NATO or AUKCUS (Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States) is a no-brainer. Without an alliance, New Zealand is incredibly vulnerable. And why should we not contribute in a more significant way for security in our region? And exactly how are we supposed to help the Pacific if we have no workable military? To think that China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are the alternative, which we do not align with in any shape or form - and these are the aggressors looking for greater expansion through takeover and weakness. All of which have sizeable militaries in the hundreds of thousands and produce weapons/ammunition in large quantities, etc. North Korea's population is approximately 16 million, with a military of around 1.4 million, while New Zealand has a population of 5 million and a military of around 8,000. What a joke we have become. The money it costs to set up a military could be offset by using the same force for disaster relief. The money can come from, instead obsessing on inflation, but by reducing interest rates from 8% to 3.5%. allowing the economy to recover. Billions of dollars could be used instead of lining commercial bankers' profits.

Digging up Aunty Helen again 🤔 surely her views are counter productive to our needs in 2024.The Chinese are sneaking around the Pacific in nuclear subs, the aussies need our help and the 2nd pillar is New Zealands contribution.🇳🇿👍

She's not whinging, she talking common sense. She is a very intelligent and probably one of NZ's best PMs. She looked after NZ and didn't bow down to the warmonger states of America.

The unfortunate reality is that the only thing stopping a PRC invasion of Taiwan is the US military presence in the region. In addition, the possibility that Japanese and Australian forces could intervene as well complicates the feasibility of a military operation by the PRC.
I understand Clark’s agreements against AUKUS, but military deterrence is what has kept the peace so far around Taiwan and the South China Sea.
I agree that New Zealand shouldn’t join AUKUS. But at the same time it’s important to recognize that China does present legitimate security concerns.

What a surprise, a weak pacifist shares weak pacifist ideals. NZ is already seen as a joke on the world stage with regards to its 'independent foreign policy' and it is about time we started to pull our weight again. The geo-political environment in the Pacific has changed markedly and will continue to do so regardless of what NZ's desires are. But just like residential house insurance you have to be ready for the worst, so joining pillar 2 of AUKUS makes absolute sense at this point in time.
