Ms Clark - there is nothing about a lack of transparency about the recent election. You should know - you are educated in political science - foreign affairs is never an election issue (only exception was the one caused by Labour in the mid-80s). AUKUS does not require us to buy any military equipment. It means that NZ is aware of the types of developments that are occurring in the great powers, and that includes China. The reality is that we are totally in a bind - yes China is our largest trading partner. Yes, our national values accord with the Western world. We are no different to any other Western country who is hedging with China and the US. Blurring ambiguity????
Policy departing from a long standing convention which has bipartisan consensus is something that should have been debated at the election. Same like Nact sneaking through the change to smoking ban (and god know what else they haven’t told us).

Overall, very good interview. Good questions and fairly diplomatic and sage answers from Helen Clark. At the end of the day, though, we have a military in crisis and not fit for purpose in a world that is looking increasingly unstable and hostile. That is the reality, and to pretend nothing is happening and not picking an alliance, I don't think is a smart decision. Alliances like NATO or AUKCUS (Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States) is a no-brainer. Without an alliance, New Zealand is incredibly vulnerable. And why should we not contribute in a more significant way for security in our region? And exactly how are we supposed to help the Pacific if we have no workable military? To think that China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are the alternative, which we do not align with in any shape or form - and these are the aggressors looking for greater expansion through takeover and weakness. All of which have sizeable militaries in the hundreds of thousands and produce weapons/ammunition in large quantities, etc. North Korea's population is approximately 16 million, with a military of around 1.4 million, while New Zealand has a population of 5 million and a military of around 8,000. What a joke we have become. The money it costs to set up a military could be offset by using the same force for disaster relief. The money can come from, instead obsessing on inflation, but by reducing interest rates from 8% to 3.5%. allowing the economy to recover. Billions of dollars could be used instead of lining commercial bankers' profits.
@@jtonline99 I think you would be dreaming if you think that New Zealand can somehow avoid getting involved. A united front has more protection than a divided one. It killed senior military of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who were key players in planning and coordinating Iran's terror proxies in Syria and Lebanon ,who have been consistently carrying out attacks against Israel since the October massacre . Even if it had been a diplomatic building , apparently if it is being used for military purposes against a country, it loses its protection and is a lawful and legitimate target for self defense .

I agree with a lot of what Helen Clark says & I've always respected her world view. She's an incredibly accomplished politician and a genuine leader. However, given New Zealands position in the world, our hard power (or lack thereof), it's imperative that New Zealand has friends who at least loosely align with our world view & ideals. New Zealand already has ANZUS and we are allied with Australia. If the soft benefit of admission to AUKUS is a further strengthening of New Zealands relationships with like-minded countries & a quiet message to those who may be potential adversaries in the future, then I think AUKUS is the way to go.
@HenriHattar US Secretary of Defence Anthony Blinken has been attempting to strike a deal with the coalition government. He met with Winston Peters on the 11th of April, and one of the subjects they discussed was AUKUS. This fact can easily be verified by reading any NZ news source. You're wrong.

Clark is asserting way too much about our current relationships in regard to trade and security. But what's the real purpose of interviewing HER anyway ?
The truth is that the Arden government returned NZ to something close to an ANZUS strategic defence relationship with the US, Australia and Japan in going ahead with the P8 MPA purchase which provides considerable surveillance capability and is easily upgraded to provide powerful conventional anti ship and anti submarine deterence along with the security partnership signed with Japan which intergrates NZ with US Pacific wide cover. Aukus is a secondary agreement relating to filling gaps in USN manning of CVN and SSN and internal security and intelligence.
@@greggiles7309 I was always was a strong supporter of the P3 squadron and P8 acquisition. I offered myself to the RNZAF to assist in ensuring the purchase NZs most significant acquisition went ahead under the Arden Peters government. I played a role in cooperating with the RNZAF officers, journalists and Americans in making it go ahead against all odds. The P8s, their base facility and support facilities are a serious addition to ANZUS forces in the Pacific. The RNZN tanker and support ship HMNZS Aotearoa which Don McKinnon and the RNZN accepted USN advice as the most useful ship contribution NZ could make to the US and Western defence and of more than symbolic value as it equipped to refuel USN Guided missile destroyers a demanding role. I have never actually met Helen Clark deliberately missing several opportunities to meet her in the early 1980s as her left wing position would have compromised my position as a commentator and feature writer I did however discuss some issues with her on the phone and in a sense advise her and anyone else against participation in the RAN Collins sub programme which Muldoon had signed memos of understanding about. I was opposed to nuclear power not nuclear weapons at the time and it was obvious Clark was both dishonest and only interested in destroying both NZ and Australia's ANZUS relationship in 1983-84.Anzus was signed in 1951 during the Korean war by which time the US and USSR already had hundreds of nuclear weapons and the presumption of the ANZUS treaty as spelt out by Dulles in discussions about the treaty in Wellington and Canberra in 1951 was that direct physical defence provisions for NZ were not required in the age of nuclear deterrence and ANZUS and the associated and linked Radford Collins are therefore primarily about maritime surveillance zones and defence of Pacific seaplanes, airlanes and communication cables from NZ and Australia to the US and Japan and maintaining backup sea lanes south of Australia. As JF Dulles explained to the US Senate ANZUS was essentially an idealigical joint commitment to containing the 'common danger' of Russian and Chinese communism with US defence policy centred on protecting West Germany and Japan by in the Pacific developing island chain defences. ANZUS in Dulles view was the realisation of Theodore Roosevelt's plan and all US Naval planning in the first half of the twentieth century to incorporate NZ and Australia within the US Sphere of influence and under the Monroe Doctrine. And in reality in 1941,1951 and 2024 NZ and Australia are so small and defenceless we have no choice.
@@frederickmiles327 awesome. Biden needs to join TPPA for any new military alliance. NZ has been backburned for any FTA. I was in 4thG in early 1980's,
The unfortunate reality is that the only thing stopping a PRC invasion of Taiwan is the US military presence in the region. In addition, the possibility that Japanese and Australian forces could intervene as well complicates the feasibility of a military operation by the PRC. I understand Clark’s agreements against AUKUS, but military deterrence is what has kept the peace so far around Taiwan and the South China Sea. I agree that New Zealand shouldn’t join AUKUS. But at the same time it’s important to recognize that China does present legitimate security concerns.
What a surprise, a weak pacifist shares weak pacifist ideals. NZ is already seen as a joke on the world stage with regards to its 'independent foreign policy' and it is about time we started to pull our weight again. The geo-political environment in the Pacific has changed markedly and will continue to do so regardless of what NZ's desires are. But just like residential house insurance you have to be ready for the worst, so joining pillar 2 of AUKUS makes absolute sense at this point in time.

@ianfisher6561 Agree totally. Having said that, they've been on the downward track since Bretton Woods. It's gotten worse since 9/11. The Maidan Coup in 2014 was an unreported war crime in 5 eyes countries. But we knew the CIA were involved. Our mainstream media has much to answer for.
The reunification of Taiwan with China (termed, contrary to fact and principle, as "re-absorption") has always been painted as a bloody affair in western propaganda. This is so only because the west would make it bloody.
My post on US empire propaganda with regard to the reunification of Taiwan with China was swiftly censored by UT. I wonder why people shouldn't know. Freedom of speech my foot.
AUKUS will absolutely require New Zealand to buy military equipment, and it will include US designed systems intended to integrate their military into New Zealand's. That's exactly what Australia has signed up for, and at significant cost.
Thank you Helen Clark for your profound knowledge on laws and humanism

They sponsor terrorists . They have no rights .

@@TJH-111 By that logic, Iran is also entitled to retaliate against the United States, because they sponsor the country responsible for bombing Iran's consulate building.

Labour has always elevated the discourse. Nats are ignorant buffoons and always have been.
Good luck with that. All this lot is doing is following America.
Does it make us vulnerable? Or does it take us out of the crosshairs pointed at the US and UK
We're in the middle of nowhere far from rubbing up against anyone & you believe siding with the US makes us safe????
@@jtonline99 I think you would be dreaming if you think that New Zealand can somehow avoid getting involved. A united front has more protection than a divided one. How much protection do you think the Pacific Islands will have if they do not join an alliance - do you think China will just look the other way. No, it will just take by force - like how it is now doing in the South China Sea.
@@jtonline99 it’s naive to think that China only views the US and UK as their opponents, China makes deals today with the view of where they will be in 50 years, they are an old civilisation with a long term plan, NZ may wish to be neutral and if their lucky may remain so, but remaining neutral is reliant on the aggressor agreeing, if the World moves towards another Cold War, or worse, a real one, NZ may need to choose a side and that could be reliant on who will trust us, either way NZ needs to be better able to at least show a potential enemy that there will be a cost to invasion even if it’s low.
Totally naiive comment. NZcannot afford to cosy up to.the USA fights.

Does New Zealand need to be apart of the five eyes ? If so why
The data gathered by Five Eyes is unlikely to be useful to New Zealand. The point is that the US and the UK can use the data to aid with their imperialist projects.
If New Zealand attempted to leave the partnership, a "regime change" operation would be carried out by the CIA, as happened in Australia in 1975.

The Israeli strike was on a building NEXT to the embassy, not on the embassy, and it was a targeted attack .
