So, the solution I from HC hear is to have a ceasefire and peace negotiations. Ok great. Has this been tried before (and now)? Has it worked? If not, why not? And what will happen this time to make things different from the other times? Is it in fact what each of the countries both want? Do they (Hamas and Israel) both jointly want peace? It seems be a cycle that a lot of time, money and effort has gone into internationally over decades, yet we have history on repeat. We can literally go back to the same issue when the last big conflict and reuse all this rhetoric. Nothing has changed. So, is it really the way forward, to do what has clearly not worked before, yet again? Should we try a new approach? And what would that be exactly?

I can't believe what I heard in this segment. I am going to do a full breakdown so everyone's knows how full of it Helen is. But before I go point by point I must mention that the opposing view was not even presented (it never is these days). Also I must mention that the fundamental nature of armed conflict is unchanged over the millennia. That is to say that... “Will is the central idea in any conflict. Let us postulate: to win any conflict, an opponent successfully imposes his will on an opponent.”
So lets be clear, this century alone tens of thousands of rockets have been fired at Israel. These rockets were carrying warheads not flowers. This is due to the fact that Hamas has made no secret of their desire to IMPOSE THEIR WILL ON ISRAEL. In other words Israel has been on the receiving end for decades. Now every nation has a right and a responsibility to keep their citizens safe, especially from terrorism. To this ends Israel pulled out of Gaza around 2005. They have been rewarded for their commitment to the two state solution and or peace by being constantly attacked.
This situation has escalated to the point where one or the other of these sides IS going to impose its will on the other. I must be clear, if one side doesn't impose its will then this conflict will go on forever. An indisputable fact which Helen could never understand.
Now that I have introduced a few truth bombs into the discussion lets go over Helens talking points one by one. I will mention approx. times so you can refer to her comments.
37 sec -Helen mentions that Hamas must be condemned. Ok, if Hamas is responsible for unlawful terrorist aggression at a grand scale this is a good start. However it is pointless to condemn someone for anything if you don't' follow up with a solution. Does she not realise that if Israel stops then these attacks by Hamas against Israel will just start again. It is deeply ironic that a left wing politician is taking a line that endorses perpetual war in Israel. Great contradiction Helen and thank you for having the foresight of an ant, brilliant.
1min 20 sec - Helen mentions the level of destruction. Lets be clear, during this conflict the media hasn't shown a single incident of a Israeli soldier intentionally targeting a civilian. So we can be clear that the reason there is so much destruction is because Hamas is FIGHTING, Helen makes out like Israel is invading Amish country with a population armed with pitchforks. The destruction is solely an indicator of Hamas resistance and because Hamas is responsible for causing this operation... they should get full blame for both edges of the sword. Cause and effect.
1 min 14 sec - Helen mentions civilians being "herded in" this is simply Israel telling civilians to go to safe areas, Helen needs to pick one argument, she can either accuse Israel of not trying to prevent civilians casualties or she can acknowledge their tremendous efforts to get civilians to safety. What she does here is appalling, she is actually condemning Israel's efforts to keep civilians safe and she is putting a tremendous spin on that to make them look bad for doing the right thing.
1 min 53 sec - Helen mentions "Two wrongs don't make a right", Lets be clear, when Hamas attacks Israel the overwhelming majority of their attacks are aimed at civilians, which is wrong. So she got the first part right. However there is virtually no evidence of Israel DELIBRATLY targeting civilians, if it does happen it would be very rare exceptions to the rule. So lets get real, terrorist's are evil for targeting civilians and Israel is not evil and not wrong because they are not targeting civilians. You would think someone with Helens "experience" would understand the importance of intentions as well as just actions. Any solider is doing right so long as they aim narrowly at the enemy combatant and not civilians. One of the worst things that has happened in the last few months is the distinction between targeting civilians and combatants seems to have been forgotten. Do people not realise its not just a matter of having a cause, how you conduct yourself matters. So we can conclude that what Israel is doing is not wrong, the are targeting combatants only. Her two wrongs argument reveals her ignorance and ethical failures.
3 min 30 sec - NZ might have had a reputation once for being fair and balanced. But not now, NZ is well know as an ultra woke nation, a politically correct mess, our opinion is about as valid as Trudeaus, hopefully the new government can restore our reputation, they will do so by not sticking their nose in this one.
7 min - Helen mentions what does Israel want, she doesn't seem to even be aware of how hard Israel has worked for peace, and the concessions they have been willing to make. She is of course asking the wrong question. The question is how can Israel not get attacked constantly? I have never heard a plausible answer other than what they are doing right now... imposing their will before the terrorists impose theirs (again).
Now she also mentions the two state solution, at this point Helen needs to put on a dunce hat. Israel pulled out of Gaza around 2005 to make this work. And yet they have been attacked constantly ever after. I can assure you that if Mexico fired tens of thousands of rockets into the USA that would be the end of Mexico, UNLESS they made a quick peace deal. What Israel is doing is no different that what any just country would do in response to attacks. Remove the threat and guarantee peace. To be clear Helen knows the two state failure is due to Hamas, but she is just dishonest or misleading you. Take your pick.
At the end of the day you can't have peace when Hamas is completely unwilling to negotiate or compromise, just remember that in terms of the number of civilian people deliberately targeted and killed as a percentage of population that 7 October is 13 times worse for Israel than Sept 11 was for the USA. You also need to ask yourself how wars in the past that have ended with peace actually ended?
Take for example London being bombed during the blitz, Germany and England are friends now, is it because England appeased Germany?, Did England compromise? Did England offer a two state solution in the U.K?
The answer is no... THEY TOOK THE FIGHT TO BERLIN.
Israel must take the fight to Berlin.

Hitler was from Linz, Austria, and his party was eventually funded by the likes of Henry Ford and other powerful corporates at the time. There was a massive fear of serious threat of communism/ Stalinism. So you can understand the sentiment of the time He also gained finance from property stolen from Jewish business and capital, which was based on a lie that all Jewish people were part of the communist threat.

    • @skog44

NZ worries me, because many people only swallow mainstream media reports and don't look deeper. Israel was a project created by Britain to secure its influence over the Levant and Suez Canal access to oil. That project was taken over by the US after WW2. The slogan at the time was "A land for a people, for a people without a land", but most sources tell us that 750000 Palestinians were kicked off their land in the so called Nakbar. It was ethnic cleansing back then and it is ethnic cleansing in 2023. The steady influx of settlers to the West Bank and Gasa over the years since 47 has accentuated the problem, and Israel likes to 'mow the lawn' from time to time, to keep the Palestinian population at their desired level. They do that of course by bombing the cities, a practice that helps them and the US develop their new weaponry, drones and whatever else comes to mind.
US supplies weapons and money to do this and is complicit in the current bombardment. The UN has finally invoked article 99 which has been vetoed by only one country, USA.
The longer the US does this the more enemies it will make in the world and the closer we come to a very serious war, something that Christian Zionists in the US are praying for because they believe in the Book of Revelations and that Jesus will come and save all Christians (not Jews!).
It is incredible how a very small number of people can influence such a powerful country and bring us all to the brink of Armageddon. We need an immediate ceasefire and some serious backpedalling to be done asap!

In a comment above I said Clarke was being disingenuous by calling for a cease fire and a 2 state solution when as an ex PM she should know that these have failed in the past not because of israel, but because of the palestinians.
You refrained from mentioning the casualties are ( allegedly) so high in Gaza because hamas uses their population as human shields. I heard a good quote the other day.
"Israel protects its people with weapons
Palestine protects weapons with its people."

@@anakei160 I don't think anyone know much about Hamas, except, yes, they are a terrorist group, but they were elected into power in Gaza by overwhelming majority. They did try to provide some sort of social support for people in Gaza, and I think they did want to negotiate with Israel and the West, but Israel doesn't want negotiations, the same way that the West doesn't want to parler with Russia.
Looking around different websites and podcasts, the Western narrative in weakening, just like the US economy. No war, no economy in the US. Most of the world is fed up with all the destruction and threats of nuclear war . The West can't blame anyone except itself. It has been waging wars and overthrowing democratically elected government ever since the end of WW 2. The chickens might be coming home to roost soon, and I think there will be a tectonic shift in Global power quite soon.
NZrs love programs like TalkBack and the 1 &3 News programs, but those stories are all coming from one source ...government! There are so many alternative News programs on the net with highly qualified, renouned and experiences figures.
On the military side, there are commentators such as Col. Larry Wilkerson and Scott Ritter.

To condemn Israel for boldly addressing the Hamas terrorists means that terrorism is tolerated if not supported - with the result that it will be allowed to spread, as per the Hamas mandate. They use ceasefires to regroup, and then they attack Israel again. And they don't care in the least how many of their 'own' people die.

In this case I agree with Helen Clark whole heartedly. New Zealand needs to step up and show support for the Paiestine people. If a ceasefire doesn't happen soon, there'll be no Palestinians left as the Israeli captors are stepping up their crimes against humanity.

Hamas was voted into power by 90% of the Palestinians
Hamas used all the money they received to build tunnels bombs and rockets
Hamas wanted and still wants the war with Israel
They dress up as civilians and shoot bombs and guns at Israel soldiers and when they die Hamas claims that they are civilians
Hamas can stop the war if they give up the hostages and give up but they want war and will put their civilians (children) in harm’s way to gain support from world opinion
Wake up Hamas is a terror organisation that has to be stopped

Why? So hamas can mount another murderous attack. NO THANKS. We stand with Israel. Only a fool thinks that Israel is the enemy here. Only a fool is taken in by the hamas propaganda.
The people of Gaza are occupying Israeli land. Time for Israel to take it back. Time for them to deal with those that constantly attack them.
      Do some research.
Have to laugh at you people who think Israel should have a ceasefire. WHY? So hamas can regroup and attack again. They are the ones that ALWAYS break the ceasefires or the peace treaties. NOT Israel.
And while you're busy interfering in Israels rights to defend herself against demons, (hey - when you start a war as hamas did - then be prepared to suffer the consequences), are you also telling the WHO and WEF to butt out of NZ business.
      Hypocrite.

Our country has been historically bold when it comes to speaking out about global issues. Calling for a ceasefire is 100% necessary! We also need to expel the Israeli ambassador.

Expel the ambassador to the only democracy in the Middle East, to support a terrorist organisation which is using its children as human shields. Not thinking this through are you.

I wholeheartedly agree with Helen Clark.
Shame on the new coalition for not calling for a ceasefire.
New Zealand should and wants to be on the right side of history. We're no better than the US and UK right now.
