  • Alec Baldwin and production company El Dorado Pictures have filed a motion to stay proceedings in a civil lawsuit against them pending the outcome of the famed actor’s criminal case. Baldwin was indicted on one count of involuntary manslaughter in January, nine months after prosecutors dropped initial charges against him, in connection to the fatal shooting of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. Baldwin’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and faces up to 18 months behind bars.

He was not the director, Joel Souza was. He was one of six producers for Rust. He is not the sole financial bearer, two producers involved have already testified they were in charge of finding funding for the film. Where do you get these alternative facts from? Are you just making things up? Also, a jury has already found the armorer, the one actually in charge of firearms and safety checks, guilty. We know from the armorer’s trial and testimony provided by expert witnesses that it is not required/nor expected that an actor performs safety checks on firearms.

In civil cases like this one, after the complaint is filed both parties have the right to ask for documents, pictures, information about the case from the other side. There is also a right to take a deposition which means the person has to show up, they are under oath, and they have to answer questions from the other side. If there are pending criminal charges, it is not unusual at all to stay the civil litigation pending the outcome of the criminal trial. If you will recall, OJ’s criminal trial went first and then the civil lawsuit came second. Nothing unusual going on here.

There are several civil lawsuits by the production employees who witnessed the shootings and death of Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza. Many never returned to their jobs and have been so traumatized that they left their careers in the film industry. Some had severe hearing loss, too. So many people dropped the ball on this set, Alec Baldwin included. I hope he goes to prison. He pulled the trigger on his own - they were not filming anything and he was not told to do anything but sit there. I watched the Hannah Gutierrez Reed trial and I’m glad she was found guilty. However, she had only had 1 armorer job before this one on Rust. She was young and way too inexperienced imo but Alec’s production company was cheap and they had a difficult time finding anyone experienced to work for such low pay.

Actually she wasn't very experienced at all. She'd only worked on one small movie before this and it's clear when asked questions by the police that she didn't know what credentials are necessary to be an armourer, and that she is supposed to be the only person touching the gun from the time it's removed from the locked safe/box until it's handed to the actor. She's supposed to stay and have her eyes on the weapon at all times during the scene and them immediately return it to the locked safe. Many questions she was asked were answered with vague responses and lots of "teenage speak". She seemed surprisingly and spectacularly unqualified, inexperienced, unprofessional. She was hired because she was "cheap".
