You are an awesome fabricator. Great at explaining things. I like that you show your mistakes too. I have been wanting to build a custom trailer for a few years. Watching all your bed builds got me wanting to do one of them too. I bought my first welder two or three dsys ago. A 160 amp stick welder. Thanks for making your videos. You share alot of knowledge.

I was looking at a dump truck bed at my local junkyard and was thinking it would make a good trailer if I had the use for one and now here's this video in my list.

The strongest way is always shape the ends of the channel and not to but them together also remove the mill scale of the material before welding it will stop contamination into the weld.

I always wanted a yellow ford truck with a step side bed! I like the trailer build. I used to build trailers for HawkLine before they went out of business.

You most certainly are not the first person to make a mistake as I have many doing similar like projects. Like I was told many years ago “ if it can be fixed it ain’t broke”

I'm guessing 3500 invested at this point and not built yet. 1500 in axles,hangers and connecting brackets. 1000+ in steel easy. At least 500 for the dumping system ( probably more). Another 500 in wheels and tires. Still need hitch, jack, paint,lights and battery. So close figure, 3750. Not counting time, welding supplies grinding disks, act and oxy, chop saw blades and electric. I'm gonna say 8k by the time it gets its first load. I should know, I just finished building one almost exactly like this. Works great but I could have bought a like new used for half the price. Lot of fun building it though.

Yep I figured about 3500 in materials. And that's cheap for a dump trailer if you don't count labor. Heller cheap, but if you do you don't really save that much. But it is fun building one. Let me offer a little advice. When you get it done, don't put 10 ton in it, it won't dump that much. Mine ended up with around 5.5 ton max. Luckily I have a tractor and was able to dig some out with it. The bed will weigh some of the 10 ton and you lose a little through the scissor mechanism. You may get a little more than 5.5 because yours is brand new. I reclaimed mine so it may have lost a little lifting power. Keep it up, interested in seeing it finished.

I just finished my first welding project and I never would of thought to cope the channel together like you did. I just 45’d the ends and welded them up. Love UA-cam channels like yours that someone can actually learn from. Looking forward to more videos!

Good catch with the axles not being straight. It would haunt you for the next ten years if you didn't fix it now. The tire wear would have gotten expensive. Tee shirt and truck would be cool. Thanks for the great video

Always measure from the front of your frame back to your axles, Measure centre coupler to the front of the frame then double check to the axles

I never do a trailer at 60%. That makes the tongue weight way too much. I set my axles back from center no more than 6" back. I've never had an issue.

Very nice work man. Just be careful with axle placement because it can mean the difference of a lot of things. Tongue weight, pulling, handling..... Not 100 percent sure on a dump bed but I know for sure if the axles aren't in the right spot on a car hauling trailer it will go crazy when pulling it.
I agree for big big trailers
When I set my axles it's one inch per foot back. So if it's a 12 ft trailer center of axle is 12in toward the rear. Doesn't matter if it's a 16-foot 20-foot or 30-foot it always works perfect. I've never built a dump trailer so not sure on that.

Says it’s stronger to butt-weld than it is to notch and weld. Didn’t grind the mill-scale off before welding...
You get a lot more weld penetration if you clean off the mill-scale, js.

i never weld down hand on trailors up hill with 7018 only and 60% of 12 ft is 7.2 ft front to back == 7ft2in13/32 to cl of axel look like you will have a massive wt on back bumper with a 8000 lb load your front wheels will float low stearing but good breaks i see you moved to back all the way steal heavy on bumper i like to check others on building things and learn from it

measure from right front corner to left axle and measure from left front corner to right front axle and make sure the axle on right is same distance from the left front axle you probably know what I`m trying to explain good luck
