- I'm very pleased with this contraption I made:
Drill Pump on Amazon: geni.us/Hs9p5
My review on Amazon: amzn.to/3NmLmlO
This pump seems to be available in loads of different countries so hopefully this video will help lots of people.
It really solved a problem since I previously couldn't entirely empty the hot tub and removing sand from it was very time consuming.
It is great to have on hand if I ever need to drain a barrel, oil tank or sump - I think I will buy another so I have one for the hot tub and one for oil / petrol or anything else.
It will easily and quickly fully empty a sump or aquarium with no mess.
The impeller sounds like it is made from soft plastic and it literally wouldn't hurt a fly as demonstrated at the end of this video.......
Thanks for watching.

Brilliant, you just reminded me of my uncle Tommy R.I.P.....Theres always a solution.great 👍
There are no problems, just solutions.
OMG!! My Python Syphon just had a major upgrade.Thank you so much for showing this Richard.
Drop the "OMG". No need for blasphemy.
IT is a great video , because you are specific , practical and clear and show exactly what is capable.. The added filter bag is also very good.. An alternative is garden pump but battery garden pumps are rather expensive... There are some drill pumps which can pump 3400 LPH... not sure what yours is doing but great video...
According to the link the pump in this video will shift 3000 lph but since the fittings are only 12mm for the hose and the hose is quite long and only 12mm diameter it will be lucky to be moving any more than 1000-1200 lph.
If I took the quick fit connectors off the main pump and added a different hose tail to take a bigger diameter pipe the flow rate would definitely be more, probably more than double due having much less flow lost to friction but it's something I haven't tried.
Very clever 👏👏
Genius!
Richard, very interesting, without mentioning that the electricity cost is very low, since yr using a battery drill.
I am gettting mine right now!!!!!
I just bought another one for use with petrol / oil. Definitely a useful item to have ready for future use.

Dear Pond Guru. I broke the filter on my biorb aquarium. I saw you had a video on that, and I really need to know what kind of ring is the silicon ring between the filter basket and the tank bottom. (It's a flow 15.)
It's not an O-ring, it's stepped. I'm sure I can find the same thing somewhere online, but I don't know what it's called. Can you help?
@@greyvr4336 (my other channel) Unfortunately I'm not familiar with any sort of O ring in a Biorb as I can't recollect ever seeing a silicone ring in the Biorbs. It may be something specific to the Flow tanks or something new (all the tanks I've had are old) - sorry, I'm not much help here but it should be listed as a spare part on either the Oase site or a site selling filter parts.
@@ThousandYardStare I've had the most unpleasant time trying to find out what it's called. I've gone through catalogues of silicon rings, dozens of pages on google,
And the tech support line just kept saying 'durrr... that's not a replaceable part....' Worse tech support ever.
It's under the filter basket in the flow15. There's a black rubber o-ring and a white/translucent silicone gasket/ring/something or two, thing tore really bad. Would be easy to fix if I just knew what it was.
@@ThousandYardStare I put a video of the ring (rings?) on my 'channel.' It's my only upload so it won't be hard to find. If you've any idea what it might be, please let me know.
@@greyvr4336 Yes that's definitely a gasket and there are results from US sites for 'replaceable biorb gasket' but I can't find anywhere in the UK selling them. Oase should have them since they are the suppliers of Biorbs.

Getting quite inventive eh? Pimpa water pump or DIY a tub cleaner. Maybe a homemade water canon. The point is it's functional. Sand doesn't go under the bathing suit. Sand-free crack. I give you an idea I mean another tip: Use the shop vac attachment up front it's better and more efficient. Plus it's faster. So Richard you reinvented the pool vacuum or the shop vac (wet & dry) OMG. You are so gentle Riichard you won't even harm a fly! Ah, so nice of you. I guess the patent is pending! 🤔👍
Great example of why bartenders will occasionally stop making your drinks!!! 🍾🍷🍸🍹🍺🍻🥂☕️🦩
Hi Richard, a quick question - if one intended to empty a hot-tub or container of water downhill, could you start with the drill and then let the gravity/syphon effect take over, with this product?
It will continue to drain as a syphon but since the pipe and restrictions inside the 'pump' are so small it will take an age to drain that way.
That is why I just use it for drawing out the gritty muck from the hot tub or for emptying dirty holes before concreting.
When I drain the hot tub I use the drain valve at the bottom of the tub and attach a 1" diameter hose to it. It drains in about 20 minutes but if it was draining through a 1/2" hose it would take hours to empty.
Hi Richard I'm setting up a 4ft tank 275 liters for fancy goldfish I have a fluval fx4 but just seen your video about not being able to do a full cycle with it any idea how to achieve this thanks
Arrrrgghh....that's a difficult one as you've already shelled out on a big filter which only holds 3kg of media. For a normally stocked 275 litre tank that would be great but for goldfish it's about half what would be needed for a full cycle working on 2kg per 100 litres.
Probably the most cost effective way to do it would be to add a second filter which is fed from a small pipe leading off from the outlet pipe of the main filter. If you can have a very slow flow through the second filter you will deoxygenate the water in the filter / container and effectively create a nitrate reactor which will allow much more of the media to support anaerobic activity. Less flow = less oxygenated water and even an old canister filter with a few kg of media in would be good if the flow was a dribble.
I hope that makes sense - it will save you buying a second filter.
Alternately you could go with bags of good porous media (e.g. Biogravel) buried under the substrate (assuming you have substrate in the tank) and that will perform the function of a deep sand bed in the very slow flow conditions - start with a kilo and see how it goes after a few months, adding another if necessary.
Regards,
Richard
Hi Richard, I'm planning on getting a 6x2x2 (600) litre tropical fish tank and wanted to know what so you think the running costs would be. My main concerns is how much electricity the heaters will consume as they will both be 300watts. I'm planning on using two 600 oase thermo biomaster for this tank. Usage for both the heater comes up to 600 watts and it seems like it will cost me a lot just to run the heaters. What would the expected watts be to run this type of tank.
That is impossible to answer since there are so many variables. The filters will be easy to work out since they are working 24/7 and you can work that out if you know how much you're paying per unit of electricity.
How often the heaters come on will be dictated by the temperature of the room so if you have a warm room the heaters will hardly every come on but then it also depends on what temperature you run the tank at. If it's 25 degreec C then that is a few degrees above normal room temperature but if you run it at 28 degrees C then the heaters will have to run more often to maintain the temperature.
Heaters aren't on all the time but there is no way to predict how often they will run - it's probably somewhere between 8-15 minutes an hour depending on how warm your house is and how high you keep the temperature in the tank.
Therefore using those two figures you can work out some sort of range to how often the heaters will be on.
Hi Richard, firstly thank you for your reply it helped a lot. The filters and lights where easy for me to figure out as it's a more straightforward compared to the heating. The temperature I plan on running the tank would be 24 degrees and the room for the most part stay room temperature apart from the winters as I live in the uk. To prevent heat escape I do plan to insulate two sides of the tank as it will be in the corner of the room and also at nights I plan to put a thermal blanket ontop of the fish tank. Going based of you saying that heater would turn on 8-15min every hour is it safe to say that I can expect to have to heater running 6 hours per day. And from this I can calculate how much wattage I would be using per day.
@@MustafaAli-tu6zl (my other channel) It sounds like with the measures you're taking to insulate the tank, the tank temperature and the room temperature your heaters will be on minimally - probably only 5-10 minutes per hour so they may only run for 4 hours a day, maybe even less.
Working out a best case scenario of 4 hours a day and an worst case scenario of 8 hours a day will give you a start point for costing the electric usage but an average of 6 hours run time per 24 hours is probably not far off over a year.
@@ThousandYardStare that's perfect thanks for the help. Feel much more comfortable knowing the heater wont be operating 24/7 as initially cost to run would have been to high for me to maintain long term. Once again thanks for the help
Clever!
I’m thinking a hoover brush adapted to fit could take this to the next level ?
For scrubbing or removing algae that would be most useful. I tried a small hand held vacuum brush taped to the end of the pipe here but it tended to move the sand out of the way instead of drawing it into the pipe so I took it off.
Hi Richard thanks for replying the filter was bought second hand I could sell it would a 307 or 407 be better thanks
The 307 would hold 2kg of media and the 407 would hold 3kg of media so you wouldn't be any further ahead if you sold the FX4 and bought one of those filters. If you're thinking of buying one filter to hold enough media for goldfish in a 275 litre then the FX6, Oase Biomaster 850, All Pond Solutions EF2000 or JBL 1902 would be a good place to start. There's a few more which will hold similar amounts of media.
Thanks I'll go for fx6
I know its not video related, but.
A few years ago you put a blagdon amphibious pump in your big pond. I am wondering how that pump is doing as i may get one to reduce my bills.
(my other channel) I used the Blagdon pump for a couple of years then took it and an Oase pump out when I got a much larger pond pump to take their place.
My new pump shifts around 60,000 litres per hour so I only need one pump on the pond.
The Blagdon pump still works fine and worked fine when it was in the pond. The Blagdon air pump has been running for 4+ years with no issues and if I had a much smaller pond than the ridiculous lake sized thing I have I'd have no problem running it with a Blagdon pump - the ability to turn the flow up or down is very handy for Summer / Winter conditions and since it is an asynchronous motor reducing the flow electronically reduces the power input accordingly - they are very efficient pumps.

Thank you. Glad it's been reliable and a good purchase. I'm currently using an evolution aqua 18000 which uses 250 watts so this using 80 watts at 12000 lph will pay gor itself in a year. Damn electricity costs grrr
@@markmmm1737 Yes, having appliances which are energy efficient has never been more important so it is definitely worth making the initial financial outlay to save money going forward.
Best of luck with the pond.
@@markmmm1737 Electric costs are murdering the economy and killing the aquarium and pond hobby. It's all by design and unless people are willing to spend tens of thousands to create their own electric generation we're going to be controlled by the powers that should not be.
I saw what was going on decades ago so have dedicated time and energy to creating infrastructure which will enable me to survive the next decade or two away from the control system but it's damned expensive hard work and not everyone wears their tin foil hat with pride like I do, lol
Hi there pondguru quick question my tank keeps getting a white film on it after a water change or water goes crystal for few days then the film comes any advice would be much appreciated.
Use a skimmer
@@EBSELPROAUDIO it's more on the glass I do have a skimmer when I do a water change literally within hours or a few days I do clean it off then it's fine just wondering how to prevent it
@@duncsfishgamingchannel8985 next water change, gas off your water by leaving it for a good few hours or better still overnight in an open topped container or water butt then use this water to slowly fill the tank. I say slower so you're not disturbing any substrate.
Use magic eraser on the glass to take sediment off glass.
Are you treating the water prior?
Depending on where you live it could be limestone, chalk, flint, sandstone causing the problem because u may live in a hard water area in the South East?
@@EBSELPROAUDIO thanks yes will try that next time I did slow it down and it didn't happen straight away, yes South east and use prime and api stress coat
@@EBSELPROAUDIO thanks for replies much appreciated
Hi new sub come from aquarium daily ❤😊
Nice one and thanks for the sub. I'm snowed under with work and house extension but will be making new videos whenever I can.
Sei pazzo 🤣🤣 ciao Richard

Those drill pumps last two seconds before the internals go tits up and they leak and spray water everywhere. A waste of money. I've been using a Hozelock pump. Pricey, but will last, is very quiet, much MUCH quicker and has a filter too. Thank me later.
(my other channel) There are so many different versions of this pump from a nation of different sellers that I'm guessing that I got lucky with the one I bought, featured in the video and linked to in the video description.
I use it regularly for the hot tub and have pumped filthy water from building foundations which I was sure would kill it and it still works fine, doesn't leak and is waiting for the next time it needs to be employed.
I've not checked out the Hozelock version and to be fair most of my irrigation is Hozelock but some of their products have let me down lately. They used to be excellent.
Seal your bricks...they want let of red sand..
I'm not sure what you mean there? The red sand was put into the tub by me since it shows up well against the white tub base.
Clever!
