When Authorities Drained This 200 Year Old Canal, What They Found At The Bottom Was Extraordinary

    It’s a gray January day in Paris, and a crowd has gathered along the Canal Saint-Martin. As they stare into the murky brown depths below, the waters slowly empty, uncovering secrets that have been kept hidden for many years. And as the bottom of the 200-year-old canal emerges into view, a truly bizarre underside of the city is revealed.
    The story of the famous canal began in 1802, when the French leader Napoleon I ordered its construction. At the time, around 550,000 people were living in Paris, and the population was continuing to grow. Napoleon therefore hoped that canals bringing fresh water to the city would help to prevent the spread of disease.
    As a result, over the next two decades, three canals were dug across the city, together totaling more than 80 miles in length. Arguably the most famous of the three, the Canal Saint-Martin, connects the 68-mile Canal de l’Ourcq with the long, lazy flow of the River Seine.
    Beginning in Bassin de l’Arsenal by the Seine, the canal travels underground beneath Place de la Bastille, the site of a prison that was stormed during the French Revolution. It subsequently emerges close to the Place de la République before heading north to the Bassin de la Villette. There, it joins with the Canal de l’Ourq and the River Ourcq beyond.
    In total, the Canal Saint-Martin covers some three miles of central Paris. Originally funded by a levy on wine, it historically brought trade as well as fresh water to the city. In fact, in its heyday the waterway also carried both building supplies and food to the people of Paris.

I watch videos of once gorgeous sandy island beaches & now they are garbage pits for no one to enjoy.(unusable) Everyone is capable of picking up their own rubbish. If only there was some sort of contraption designed to lift objects of considerable mass. Perhaps it could be called a "Crane".
      Or, and this is probably more likely, they simply lifted them out. A bicycle weighs less than 30lbs. The mopeds pictured are cheap, shitty death-traps designed for 16-17 year olds to ride until they get a car. They only weigh 150-200lbs. Two men could easier carry one.

    Nothing unusual found here ! I mean c'mon shopping trolleys,bikes,white goods,stolen motorbikes. Even the car was probably stolen and pushed in so no big surprise. I was hoping for something like a lost work of art or stolen bank heist 😁

      James Dixon . People are not a scourge on this earth, rather, not disposing common days objects is the scourge. I never can understand why people can't seem to donate bicycles, for instance, to Good Will or The Salvation Army. Many who cannot afford such luxuries can buy one cheap.

    If the time line can be confirmed the most fascinating and disturbing fact about this canal is that it shows the drop in water level. And we find this happening all across the globe.

    I boggles my mind how so many people have such little regards to where they put their trash ! This is not just in one place, it's all over the world ! What is wrong with people ? It takes such little effort to put trash in the containers or whatever there might be and just as little picking up trash you come across laying on the ground. They taught this kind of stuff to us while in school growing up. Maybe they ought to start teaching Environmental Science again as it seems to me the new generation doesn't give a hoot about it. Hey ! Thanks for your video ! Very informative.

    • @andrewince8824

      The vehicles depicted weren't motorcycles, they are mopeds.
      A moped is a piece of shit intended to be a cheaply-produced cash-cow. 16-17 year olds can ride them prior to getting a car. They last 2 years at best. Chances are those mopeds were stolen, joy-ridden then dumped as they are virtually worthless. Either that or someone realised that riding a moped makes one look like a twat and do discarded them.

    • @andrewince8824
      @andrewince8824 6 років тому

      I'm an Englishman. My country is plagued by mopeds. They are defined as a different vehicle and are subject to different road traffic laws due to the fact that the vast majority use 50cc and 125cc engines and the riders are usually 16-17 year olds who are riding them because they haven't got a car yet.
