- San Jose Symphonic Choir and Cal Arte Ensemble in a virtual performance created during the Covid-19 pandemic with singers and instrumentalists each recording individually at home. SJSC is directed by Leroy Kromm and Cal Arte Ensemble by Tamami Honma and Julian Brown.
The Gloria, one of Vivaldi’s most uplifting works, provides a sublime musical setting to an ancient liturgical text. The text of the Gloria begins with one of the more theatrical passages of the Bible, the angel’s announcement of the Nativity to the shepherds: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will”. Vivaldi’s portrays this moment with a bold orchestral statement: resounding trumpet calls and ecstatic octave leaps invoking the heavenly host, and a wall of sound from the chorus. The following movements provide contemplation, solos both joyous and pleading, and jewel-like moments of intertwined instrumental and choral forces.
This performance began with piano tracks recorded by Maestro Leroy Kromm. Singers and instrumentalists then each recorded themselves at home while listening to these tracks. The resulting individual recordings were compiled by chief video creator Julian Brown to achieve the sound of musicians performing together, as we fervently wish we were.

Wonderful people! I enjoyed it a lot. It was fun to sit here in Spain and watch you in your homes performing. And listen! Thank you.
Congratulations to the instrumentalists and singers, and to Maestro Leroy Kromm for his vision and conducting from the back via the anchor recording. Lots there behind the scenes! There are those who opted to sing but aren't appearing in the video. Thanks to all!

Holy Sh__!!! This is fantastic. Thanks so much to Julian, Tamami and SJSC. What a blessing in trying times! Kudos to you all! Tears in the eyes and all that. Who selected the video elements? Was that you, Julian? VERY well done.
Thank you so much Bill! We discussed ideas with SJSC for video elements such as featuring Venice at the end which I think worked very well but in the end much of the selection depends on what is available and on what I thought seemed to fit the mood of the music.
Bravo! Wish I'd been singing with you!(LynnMito)
