Hey just wanted to let you know I bought you front hatch mounting plate and the Hobie store did the rigging. It sat on the floor for a week when I was out of town and 3 people came in and wanted one - it was a very big hit!! Thanks!
Sweet motor! Iv been looking at getting a torqeedo for my 360 end of the season but this Newport is definitely on my radar now. Looking forward to on water review to make my decision. Thanks tim
Thanks Tim! Looking forward to your water Vid. I have been trying this with fixed position (with my Torqeedo, we chatted about this at Summit booth before I got my Hobie when moving it from my Atak) and I feel like it's not steering great. Interested to see if you run into the same thing and if you have a solution.
Nice set up, I added the NK-180 to my PA 12 / 180 this winter and am in the process of getting my 2 batteries (same as yours) rigged up. I even got the same box your using. I bought the 24V wiring kit with onboard charging but I'm stumped on how to rig up the onboard charging. When you charge your batteries do you just attach the charger clips to the battery terminals without disconnecting anything and then plug in both chargers? Also, did you add a circuit breaker to yours?
I dont use a circuit breaker...I haven't found a need for it. I take the batteries off the kayak and charge them on the bench in my garage. I charge each battery separate...12V
This may be a dumb question, but how come you have 2 charging ports when wired in series. Shouldn't you just have 1 port to charge both batteries at same time.
How do two 50ah batteries get you to 1250ah's? Did I misunderstand your narrative? ... Also, how long would you expect that battery setup to run at 50% throttle?...TIA.
Tim, cant wait for on the water video! Why don't you use the dakota lithium batteries anymore? You was one of the first people to use them batteries. I ready to pull the plug on this motor if it works out. Thx for all your videos, I learned some much from you over the years!!
Nothing against DL, they have great batteries. I have a relationship with FPV-POWER after designing the dual battery hatch mount with BerleyPro, so I like to try and keep everything in the same 'family'. I just need to do some more editing on the video, but I'm happy with the Newport Vessels NK-180S. Top speed is 5mph...I'm finding its good value for the price.
Sorry, it's been on my 'to-do' list. My garage/shop/studio has been taken over with cnc machines and with it being winter up here, I haven't been able to do anything outside.
Looks very nice. Maybe I missed it, how to do you plan to steer it? Also curious on your thoughts on the torqueedo evolve system, would you go with that again? I know it's not designed for the 360 drive well ( would be interesting if they adapted it). Thanks
I have the NK-180S 'fixed' so it doesn't move. I steer with the PA's rudder...just like you do without a motor. I like the Evolve to get place to place, but I like to use the Mirage Drive while I'm fishing...it can be a PITA to switch back and forth between the two. I don't believe there are any plans to adapt an Evolve style motor to the 360.
You connect the positive from one battery to the negative of the other battery. Then you use the remaining positive and negative from each battery to power your motor.
@@TimPercyKayakFishing Thanks, I did know that but wasn't sure what connectors you used and how the 12volt sides worked. I assumed they were separate wires.
I hope to have my review video cometed this week, but yes, I'm very happy with the motor. I'm a bigger guy (265 lbs) and it pushes me in the PA14 up 5mph.
I like your use of the Hobie through hull on your pelican case. Suggested mods especially for saltwater use. 1. Leave charge cable and plugs internal to the case to protect charge plugs from the elements. 2. The Hobie through hull is not water proof. You can further mitigate water intrusion through the penetration by employing a drip loop, just make a 360 in your wire outside of your battery box and fix it to itself or make a U and fix to battery box, this utilizes gravity to help move water away from the penetration. LIPO batteries are a significant fire hazard afire in your cat trunk or garage could be devastating. LIPOs burn extremely intensely and the plastic pelican adds fuel. You need to store, charge, and transport LIPOs in fireproof containers. A far safer alternative to Lipo’s is LIFEPO4 batteries they are much less likely to burn and the difference in weight is only about 15% for similar watt hour capacity.
The charge cords have water proof caps that I screw on, when they're not on the charger. I have a LiFePO4 setup as well. So far I've had no issue with water getting into the Pelican case.

Hey Tim. Dave in the lumber yard found your channel. Take it easy happy fishing!
Thanks Dave. Hopefully catch you on the water at some point
And their customer service is unmatched
So true..
I'll be waiting for the water vid!!

I think the turning radius does suffer a bit, but the 360 drive can make up for that. The motor is more for straight line, point A to B

If you have the FPV-POWER batteries, you have to charge them separately as 12V, not as 24V. I plug the chargers into those two smaller plugs
This may be a dumb question, but how come you have 2 charging ports when wired in series. Shouldn't you just have 1 port to charge both batteries at same time.
When wired in series, they have to be charged separately, they are still 12V on their own. They cannot be charges as a 24V.

1250wh. I would hope 5 hours or more
Hey Tim,
I really like your throttle Mount combination. Would you care to share the exact Ram mount and Hobie H rail attachment you used? Thanks.

@@TimPercyKayakFishing Great. Thank you!
Hey Tim,
Would you care to share with me the cleat you used for locking the motor in place?

Even with the 2 batteries, you only need a 50amp Breaker?
Actually, I don't even use a breaker

Tim, I’m thinking real hard here keeping talking I’m almost sold. I want to get your on the water opinion.
How much more difficult is it load/unload (truck bed no trailer) does the motor get in your way lifting?
I take the motor off for transport. I designed my mount so you can still lift the kayak easily from the rear handle
Great video! Do you leave the motor up or down when you transport?
I take it off to transport

@@TimPercyKayakFishing I added a spoiler on mine, have a HO but was able to hit 6.1 mph on it, great motor.

What’s the speed and battery life like ?
The speed is 4.9-5mph with me. The longest I've been out is about 6 hours and still had battery. I haven't run the battery down yet out on the water.
