The history of the Crowsnest Pass is a history of coal mining. When the community of Coleman was founded by the International Coal and Coke Company in 1903, the mining company was the local employer, landlord, and sole provider of electricity and water.
Every day up to 200 miners would walk up and down the path to the McGillivray Mine (active from 1909-1957) from Downtown Coleman. Nowadays things look a little different. Though the mining town culture of the Crowsnest Pass is still very much alive, the Coleman Miners’ Path is walked no longer by miners but by hikers. Located just a short walk down this lovely historical trail is Rainbow Falls, and along the way there are multiple signs of the former use of this path.
