    What topic should I discuss next for my SPOILER-FREE deep dive series? My next few videos will be SPOILER only videos, but remember to try to keep spoilers out of the comments on these videos! Thanks everyone!

      The Shadow probably needs to be explained properly to set up why people should care about the series, and following that the Karaethon Cycle to establish the overarching plot.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому

      Agreed. It's on my list! Should I do a separate video about the Shadow, or should I include it in a "Age of Legends" history video?

      @@UnravelingthePattern Now that I'm thinking on it, the Shadow AND the Karaethon Cycle could be done in one video: The Shadow and The Light. Bring the problem, then propose the solution. I think the Age of Legends might be better as it's own thing since it would be a deep dive into culture and history, although you'd have to at least summarize the last few years of it to explain the Shadow.

    This is a fantastic video for people getting into the Wheel of time and will surely help many people when the TV-show rolls around. If I were to make a criticism, and please note that it is a small one, it would be the term "the True Source".
    Light Spoilers up to "A Crown of Swords":
    This term is used in the books early on so you are not wrong. But I believe this term tends to cause some confusion with "The True Power" which is the Dark ones power and is wholly separate from "The One Power".
    "The Source" or "The One Power" are the most common usages and for me makes the most sense. There is no reason for people of the light in the third age channeling Saidin and Saidar to refer to the source as "The TRUE source", as a general rule 99% of them are completely unaware there are any other sources then the creators to distinguish it from as true or false whereas It makes a lot more sense for the dark one to do so thus "The True Power" and not "The One Power".
    This is I believe, though not based on any facts, a simple case of Jordan simply revising some early terms later on in the series when "The True Power" is introduced, I believe this because the phrase "The True Source" is to my recollection (and I just re read books 7-12 the past 2 months even thinking about this in the back of my mind as I was reading) not really used past the early parts of the series(if it is it is incredibly rare).
    So again, you are not wrong, but personally I would have avoided this term for the confusion it might cause later. Again, extremely minor nitpick here. The graphics, transcript and execution is great and it's a fantastic video.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you for your input! Check my references link in the description. It is confusing but it is definitely called the True Source. I'll talk about this and the True Power (totally different) in a future spoiler video!

    • @Jay-vp3kk
      @Jay-vp3kk 4 роки тому

      @@UnravelingthePattern For sure it is called that. Again you are absolutely correct. As I said I just think this is one of those things R.J hadn't completely thought out when the series started and dropped later on. That is pure speculation on my part however.
      Looking forward to that video!

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому +1

      @@Jay-vp3kk Oh, this I agree with! Actually, I think the show should change what they call the "True Power" to something that's easier to distinguish. What do you think it should be called? I'll definitely be doing a video about the True Power in the future! Thanks for watching!

    • @Jay-vp3kk
      @Jay-vp3kk 4 роки тому +2

      @@UnravelingthePattern I think if they kept it as "The Source" and "The One Power" vs the Dark ones "The True Power" it would be easy enough to keep track of.
      But if you were to change the name for the dark ones power... That's not a easy question. "The True Power" is aptly named, not because it is accurate but because of who named it. Zaithan is after all the Father of Lies. It makes a lot of sense for the Dark one to name it so, for in his mind he is the True Power and besides him the Creator is nothing. As such it's a small slap in the creators face. So if we were to keep that in mind and stick to the convention of "The 'Something' Power" I can come up with a few suggestions that fits within this theme of the dark one.
      The Only Power
      The Real Power
      The Pure Power
      The Great Power
      Non of these are of course accurate descriptors, but for me makes logical sense within the character of the Dark one and what he is trying to imply.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому

      @@Jay-vp3kk Love all of those ideas! Great comments. I like the idea of the DO trying to "one-up" and also trying to "mimic" the Creator at the same time. It's a common "Satan vs God" trope, but I like it!

    Where can I find the the graphic novel-esque comic that’s obviously based on the Wheel of Time?? I’ve seen quite a few snippets of them when browsing the WOT-Wikipedia and I especially noticed them when they were referring to events in New Spring. (in this video around the 3:55 mark is what I’m referring too)...

      There were two graphic novels that were made. The Eye of the World and New Spring. You can do a google search and find them pretty easily. If you want to know where I got them you'll have to login to my discord channel and message me directly. I have a link to a site but don't want to post it here. ;) Discord link is the in the description.

    I loved Jordan's intricate explanation of magic in the series, but felt he undercut it when he included the idea of blocking another channeler from the One Power. It made most Aes Sedai battles to be blocking contests (who could block the other first) rather than casting spells against other channelers.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting perspective. I liked the idea of blocking, but you're right that it does kind of make some of the fights seem more lame. I've never really thought of it that way before.

    • @Nepthu
      @Nepthu 4 роки тому +1

      @@UnravelingthePattern It drove me crazy because without the blocking, we could have had more appealing battles. Instead, they were predictable about who would block whom first. That would determine the whole fight.

      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому +1

      @@Nepthu Makes me wonder how they'll approach that for the tv show and if they'll make it more interesting for viewers. I think I remember there's a moment in The Shadow Rising when Nynaeve is "battling" Moghedien and it is mentioned that if a non-channeler were to enter the room, it would just look like two ladies having an angry staring contest. They'll have to figure out a way to make it more fun to watch I hope!

    • @Nepthu
      @Nepthu 4 роки тому +1

      @@UnravelingthePattern That is the EXACT scene I was thinking of as well! Dude, I read the book 10 years ago and still remember certain aspects like that crystal clear. My major quip is this--Nynaeve would have been JUST as interesting if she wasn't over-powered. When she defeated a Forsaken, I felt like RJ was making things too easy for the main characters. It felt silly when 99% of the good guys happened to be such immediate talents at everything they tried. Prodigies all around! Why, with a year of training, they can defeat the Forsaken, the legendary most powerful channelers of all time! The fight would be better with a variety of spells than two women just staring at each other.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому +2

      @@Nepthu I agree, but also, RJ was trying to show that the Forsaken weren't actually as cool as the legends and myths made them seem. They were just greedy selfish idiots who got lucky by being trapped for 3000 years. They never actually worked well together and it cost them. If they had just teamed up a little bit they could've easily wiped the floor with all of the main characters of the books.

    Excellent video. I loved the rich explanation of magic in this series. However, I hated how all of the main characters simply happened to be the most powerful channelers of the current age. I was similarly pissed as a teen when the Younglings defeated the Warders in battle.
    Jordan paid lip service to "experienced channelers and warriors" but always had newbies win fights. As a martial artist, it reminded me of how new students often think they are superior to the teacher who has practiced for years. Except in the WOT series, the students always ARE better than the teachers in short order.

      This is also a really unique idea that seems so obvious when you say it, but I've never really noticed it before until you brought it up. I do think RJ built "excuses" for this right into the worldbuilding and lore though. Ta'veren and past souls or "old blood" coming through, etc... Still, the way you put it does make it seem pretty ridiculous. Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! I love your perspective!

      @@UnravelingthePattern You're welcome! I have 100% respect for your content and fandom. It's a treat to see your appreciation of Jordan's work. The only reason I'm critical is because I love the series so much and feel like some minor adjustments would have been better. His past souls or resurrection concept felt like a cheap way to make all the main characters better than everyone else in the story IMO.

    Hi, thank you for your awesome videos. I have a question regarding stilling/gentling and shielding. I know there is a description that you can still feel the source when there was somebody stilled, but also when there is shielding. However, there is the part in the book "The Shadow Rising" where a important Aes Sedai clearly feels that there is nothing there anymore - that would be a good distinction from shielding. What do you think about that?

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! When someone is "burned out" they can't even sense or feel the Source any more. I don't remember that happening in the Shadow Rising, but that's the difference. Re: Stilling/gentling; they still sense the source. I talk about this more in this very video.

      Thank you for the quick reply. Yes, I know what you mean, it says so in the TWoRJWoT non-fiction book. But then where is the perceived difference from being shielded? The Shadow Rising/Chapter 47 "The Truth of a Viewing" Point of view: Siuan Sanche. She no longer feels anything. The source is gone. Somehow there's a bit of a contradiction there with Robert Jordan.

    You know tons more than I do, this was enlightening etc. One quibble: I had thought the spark was ability access to the One Power, whether you actualize it or not. No spark no power.

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  4 роки тому

      Yeah, it can kind of mean both. But specifically "the spark" refers to those who eventually channel with or without guidance. There isn't really a term for "those who can learn to channel." Saying "the spark" is sort of like saying they're "born with it." But that's confusing too because technically those who can learn are also sort of born with it. RJ did make the distinction between them both though by calling it "the spark" when they are "wilders" or channel without guidance.

    By stating at the beginning that the True Source is outside the wheel of time explains balefire, but how can you explain the True Power? Is it a copy of the True Source or an entity of it's own? Does the creator accept the True Source as part of it or is it separate? On the other hand, is the True Power a part of the shadow or does the shadow accept it? As you stated physics as in matter vs anti-matter.

    Is the Bore creation part of the Weave? Or a work of the Dark One?

    • @UnravelingthePattern
      @UnravelingthePattern  8 місяців тому +1

      Good question. It's full series spoilers to get into it, but I can give you a more general answer. We don't know exactly how the Bore was created because most of the people involved died at the moment it happened. The Dragon in the Age of Legends tried to "seal" it but it wasnt 100% successful. That's what the Dragon Reborn has to grapple with in the 3rd Age (the main series of books).
