    as always, great video.
    have you considered making a video about foreshadowing in the wheel of time? i reread the series and i noticed some lots of hints from sentences and sections that i can only understand on second read. things like characters we find out were dark friends (such as Ingtar, Verin, and many others), specific sentences from prophecies that gets brightens only in the end and such.
    i think it's can be a pretty cool subject for a video, especially for those who haven't reread the series.

    Overall I enjoyed this video, I found it to be a pretty clear explanation of the WoT magic system. One thing I did notice, you talked about Aes Sedai hunting men who could channel and Stilling them, but Stilling is a term used for permanently severing a woman from the source. When men are permanently severed from the source the term used is Gentled.

    • @Toliman.
      @Toliman. Рік тому

      Nope. You'd just be forced by the overnarrative or the pattern to become your 'destined' form.
      There are a number of contrived ways to do this, but they rely on stolen identity or Ta'Veren style rebirth of knowledge and ability. You also need that to happen 3 more times to make the contrivance adapt to the common circumstance of keeping you alive ... while learning to channel two or three different forms of magic without being killed or injured in the process of learning to control it.
      There are plenty of stories of hybrid users, but that comes at a significant dilemma to the purpose and role of the character in the lore. Are they there to break things. Or are they there to 'fix problems with the application of violence / hugs / pleasant words'. They undo the story by being more powerful and unable to be stopped, which is not a good character attribute. An unstoppable force is not liked unless they have some purpose or role or they start to break the reader/viewer's understanding of the world/author.
      And if you didn't have a former template character, you'd be recycled in the pattern on your untimely death to do it over again. It's a world built on the deaths of the most powerful trying to gain power. In the unlikely event of having both forms of magic, you'd be unable to discern the method of control of both systems, and either cripple one sense, or become a 'wildling', an untrained 'bomb' waiting to burn themselves out or draw in too much power to manipulate, without the sense to let go or the ability to let go, consciously or unconsciously.
      So while it's not impossible, the method to gain it would require a series of contrived interpretations of other people's memories and experiences to learn how to channel and manage two competing magic forces, and possibly the manipulation and abstraction of the synthesis of both.
      is this an interesting character ? nope. It's a contrived character that requires the story bend to make the situation work, and other characters to ignore the implications or benefits unnaturally.
      This can only work if it's under the 'fan-fiction' execution of story manipulation, since there's no positive in doing this. The person becomes a bridge to the integral character drama, nullifying the situation and creating an antithesis to the central thesis / conflict. They win by destroying the game board, not by competing or learning from the experiences.
      i.e. it's too Mary Sue.

    Great video! I still think that most of the power lies with men and Aes Sedai are considered suspicious at the start of the books (most of the rulers are male). I know that the books don't elaborate really on the weaving but I would have loved analysing more about using the source and the weaving is different between genders.

    • @jonahaguilar6606

      I Robert Jordan was careful to let us know that women had more power. Wisdoms could boss around the mayor, Cooks were threatening innkeepers and Morgase was queen of Andor, probably the most powerful kingdom in Randland (With the exclusion of the Seanchean and the Aiel). You also can't forget about the Aes Sedai.

    • @AugustiIlmari
      @AugustiIlmari 6 років тому +1

      Thank you for your comment! I think that in the life of small folk Jordan made life surprisingly well balanced for a medieval setting, like in Two Rivers the Women's circle and the Village council, but fitting to that timeline most of the rulers were male so I don't see that the power was centred on women. I think that he was really good on writing the perspective of both sides (not that I think there needs to be sides) so that both thought that the other had more power.

      The average Aes Sedai can walk into a random kingdom and start ordering the nobles around like an inquisitor, when you combine that with living for hundreds of years that's a lot of freaking power! Each Aes Sedai is basically like a Pope during the dark ages.

    Hey Daniel, good video. I was wondering how you view the Aes sedai as we see them in the WOT. You mentioned about the tension between different groups of channellers, but generally speaking I always felt most on the side of the Aes Sedai, although I found a lot of the ‘tension’ irritating to the extreme and a bit artificial tbh.
    I always felt that the Aes Sedai, while obviously flawed, got WAY too much stick from basically everyone about being ‘scheming’ or evil, when they really could’ve been a hell of a lot worse. One of the reasons Mat (and Nynaeve for most of the series) annoyed me was because of this baseless, close minded bias/prejudice. I think some people found it independent or like he was sticking up for himself but most of the time his attitude towards them was churlish and stupid.
    I also never felt that any of the other groups of channellers were dedicated to the good of the whole world in the way the Aes Sedai were. They are “Servants of all”, after all. The other channellers were too insular.
    Anyway, would be interested to see you do a video defending the Aes Sedai if you agree with my sentiments. All the best.

      @dreamer2260 6 років тому +2

      Daniel Greene absolutely, though obviously they were pretty rigid about outside groups as well, I suppose I feel they were slightly more flexible than say the Aiel wise ones. I always found the Aiel too convinced of their own superiority. Found them even more arrogant than AS tbh.
      Also, I was wondering if you’ve ever thought about reading the Dark Tower series, starting with the Gunslinger?
      From watching your videos I think you may really enjoy them; I love WOT but the DT is one of my favourite series ever, and it’s got a truly fascinating antihero, of a sort, in the protagonist, Roland.

    • @twig8523
      @twig8523 6 років тому +1

      No way. I think you're too predisposed to give all respect to the magic users; as a fantasy trope. If you remember, Mat's view of Aes Sedai is how most of the world (being the common folk) view Aes Sedai. They'll use anyone they can; use them up without caring, and do what they do for their own reasons; which are seldom what they imply.
      This is a huge point to be made. when you think about it, the extreme reaction of the Seanchan was done to avoid being made puppets (even more a necessity as the Aes Sedai of old, across the ocean, were bound by no oaths iirc). All of which filtered into the dehumanization of damane over generations, but each step taken seems necessary in the moment.

    • @dreamer2260
      @dreamer2260 6 років тому +2

      It's simply illogical to not even want to learn more about their methods and their attitudes; to educate yourself when you have the opportunity. I can understand how most 'common folk' might be suspicious/automatically distrustful of the AS/magic users in general, but really Mat and Nynaeve should know better. It's lazy to continue to hold a prejudice towards an entire group of people based on ignorance and assumptions, when with a bit of clear thinking you could see into the reality of the situation (Again, i'm not claiming the AS as a whole are 'good guys' necessarily, just arguing against a blanket condemnation of them).
      It grew incredibly tiresome to see our 'heroes' (or protagonists, whatever you want to call them you're meant to sympathise with them), particularly Mat and Nynaeve, but Perrin as well and even Rand, bang on about how the AS will "use anyone they can; use them up without caring, and do what they do for their own reasons; which are seldom what they imply."
      That view, on the whole, was NOT supported by their personal experience of the way AS operate. Mainly they had contact with Moiraine, and while she was insistent, she never forcibly coerced any one of them into doing anything (persuasion is a different thing, and they all agreed to leave with her, so Nynaeve's griping about Moiraine being responsible for every ill that befell them once they left the Two Rivers, though initially understandable, grew more inane the longer she maintained it), aided people when she could, and showed basic compassion and care for the world as a a whole.
      Of course she could seem cold, or ruthless, or dismissive (some of these characteristics were definitely flaws, just not to the extent they were portrayed), and she kept a little too much to herself, and they were right to press her for details, but on the whole she treated them with all possible care under the circumstances.
      Regarding your second point. I despise any justification (even a half-hearted pseudo-justification like the one you suggest above) for the Seanchan attitude towards channellers and AS; each small step limiting the freedom of an entire group is only 'necessary in the moment' if you care nothing for civil liberty. What the Seanchan did was far worse than anything the AS came even remotely close to considering. The Seanchan were simply power hungry and recognised channellers as a useful weapon, and also recognised that there would be public support for the demonisation and scapegoating of a feared minority group. It's the same old story of oppression, subjugation and exploitation i'm afraid, and there's no justification for it; as soon as you become an apologist for even the theoretical motive behind the slavery, you bring the idea into the realm of possibility in your mind.

    If someone already mentioned this then I apologize for repeating. You forgot to mention the differences in how the power is used, such as men extinguish fire by sucking up the heat while women channel it into something else, if a woman tried to do this the mans way she gets to know the pleasure of SHC with herself as the human in that equation. A man opens a gateway by punching a hole in the pattern and stepping through, a women by making two places similar until the gateway opens, if a man tries the women's method nothing happens but if a woman tries the mans way it is mentioned that it will cause a hole to open that will suck the woman in and while no one knows where she will go they do know they will never see her again.

    I love WOT magic system. only thing I'd definitely remove from it is ability to BLOCK channeling!!!!
    OMG!!! I know it's a plot device, but things could be so much more interesting and fun if there is no blocking and channelers have to battle each time or find some other way. for a magic heavy world, characters surely don't use magic enough in my opinion.

    I would argue that saidar itself is stronger than saidin, but it is balanced by the fact that saidin must be coerced, whereas saidar cannot be, so that the strength of the effects of a saidin user is dependent on how much they can draw and how willful they are, whereas the strength of the effects of a saidar user is dependent on how much saidar they can draw and their skill in producing weaves. It is implied strongly that the strongest women are a match for the strongest men, even though the men can wield a larger amount of the power. Also, saidar is more effective in the hands of a woman than saidin is, and saidin is more effective in the hands of a man than saidar is. Having both together is still better than having each separately, of course.

    To kinda visualize the strength vs dexterity difference between men and women, let's compare it to wielding a sword.
    Men can swing their sword and fell a tree in one blow.
    Women however can cut an arrow in half mid flight.

    You could say which groups can channel:
    Aes Sedai, Asha'man, Wise Ones, The Kin, Windfinders, Damane, Dreadlords, The Forsaken, Sharan, The people from Tremalking and the True Power channeled by The Dark One, Forsaken and Rand.

    Just realized the WOT magic system is an modern gender SJW nightmare. Except ofcourse the part where men aren't allowed to use it and are literally killed if they do. They would love that part. Hilarious if you think about it.

      It's funny because I sometimes describe this magic system to people who don't know the series, and some of them reply that it was 'misandry' or 'feminist propaganda'. But a further reading proves that one of the strongest messages of the series is the complementarity between men and women and the fact that they win only when they ally. As a feminist, I love that part :D

      @Sergio Anoba wtf are you even talking about? How do you know what I've read and haven't read? You're making assumptions based on one sentence I wrote. Why would I even be looking at and commenting on WoT videos if I hadn't read the books? You sir are truly an idiot.
