Ngl I’m with you bro. I hate that Nintendo does weird things with their characters like that. Toad is a main character with red spots for years. Captain Toad stars a toad with red spots. *different toad* it just don’t make sense to deliberately make things more difficult than they need to be. Same with the inconsistency with Mario & Donkey Kong/DK Jr Or replacing Toadsworth with a random toad, despite Toadsworth being a main character(he was even in the concept art). Making the kooplings related then unrelated to Bowser for some reason. Going out of their way to make Waluigi and Wario look similar and hang out all the time only to claim they’re not related. Refusing to put Daisy in any games(even the ones that star Luigi) etc etc Just weird things like that which raise more questions than answers. It’s not even fun to speculate it’s just disappointing and confusing.
@@348tacos7 Have I got news for you about Daisy. Side note, the Mario franchise has so little lore and contentenuedy that I feel like it would be alright to just ignore what the devs say sometimes and make our own headcanons and assumptions, especially considering how they can retcon themselves at anytime if they feel like it. In my eyes Captain Toad is the Toad because it just makes the most sense to me, and Wario and Waluigi are related because it would just be stupid otherwise. I also always just assumed that Bowser adopted the Koopalings, and that they just aren't blood related. I also ship Toad and Toadette, because why not, I think it's cute.
Maybe they can create a story where Toad wanted to go on an adventure outside the castle. But because he's kinda famous as the Toad who takes care of the princess, he goes under an alias, so he doesn't get special treatment.
@@magic2546I raise my eyebrows when you say Mario has little lore, but I get that delves in the question if you count spin-offs as canon or not (and just the canonicity of Mario in general), which I think spin-offs do count, as we won't have Waluigi and Toadette be more mainstream without those spin-offs to introduce them, IMO.
You missed all the other members of the Toad Brigade who have unique names and personalities, also the Blue and Yellow Toads from NSMB have names Bucken-Berry and Ala-Gold!
Weirdest thing I noticed on the SMB movie was that no female toads at all. It was like the mushroom kingdom was the Smurf village. I have no idea where all the Toadettes were.
I agree having no "girl-coded" Toads for the movie is bizzare especially now they're showing female Toads again in the Mario RPG remaster...like I get they don't want to get weird to explain how Toads reproduce, but doing a Smurf is not an answer IMO.
maybe all the girls except for toadette are in a separate tribe nobody knows about... but wait, they said toads dont actually have a gender. maybe toadette just dresses like a girl to fill everybody's void, like boys who dress like girls in all boys boarding schools
@@MegaMegajennifer Could be, I think it's some kind of religious thing. Like, in the Toadstool Tome, god says that females are not allowed outside the home and should just remain inside as they exist for sporing purposes only. lol
I love how this guy gets Mario lore right instead of making far fetched theories that Nintendo definitely weren’t thinking about when making the games or trying to put real world logic into a video game
I personally think that the playable blue toads are the same, being the one nicknamed Bucken-berry, although that name isn't confirmed. Either way, he's my favorite, next to his less-loved yellow counterpart. Edit: this theory specifically excludes SMB2US Toad, as that's the main toad.
The 4 blue Toads with glasses in the Super Mario universe are Hint Toad from Super Mario Odyssey (2017), Russ T. from Paper Mario (2001), Toad General from The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) and Toadbert from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (2005).
I feel _Nintendo_ wanted to create *a seperate distinct Toad Character with a set Identity* when they began making _Super Mario Sunshine_ - they introduced *Toadsworth* to have a clear *Second-in-Command to Princess Peach* _(Someone_ has to maintain the Mushroom Kingdom while the Princess is Kidnapped!), while *a Toad with a Red Vest* (likely to _identify against_ the OG Toad) acts mostly just _to carry everybody's Suitcases._ Sometime between _Sunshine_ and _Galaxy,_ this Toad has seemingly shown promise enough that Peach and Toadsworth have appointed him *Captain of the Royal Guard,* or something - thus now being named *Captain Toad!* While not _the Original, definitive Toad,_ Captain Toad is likely *Nintendo's attempt to create a Marketable Variation of Toad* (just like _Toadette and Toadsworth)_ that wouldn't cause confusion amongst Players when stood alongside the other people of the Mushroom Kingdom. _It was technically a Failure,_ as people *still* got Confused, thinking Captain Toad was meant to be _OG Toad rebooted,_ rather than *a standalone Character.* And while Toadsworth was _somewhat Hit-and-Miss_ wherever he appeared, once Captain Toad got *his distinct Individual Appearance,* he became popular with players enough that _a Minigame_ (then a *Full Game* based on it!) was given to promote him! All in all, _Toadsworth and Captain Toad_ are part of Nintendo's Innovations during *the GameCube Era,* where they tried many other Unique Game and Character Designs and _breaking New Ground in Gaming._ The same Time saw games like _Luigi's Mansion_ (and the *Introduction of Professor E. Gadd),* _Mario & Luigi_ *(AlphaDream's* Spiritual Successor to Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario), _Metroid Prime_ (the *first True 3D Metroid* Title) and many Other Titles within _and outside_ the Mario Universe - all with Characters and Gameplay *Brand-New to their respective Series'!*
13:09 didn't they actually have names? I don't remember where this information is from but the blue one is called Bucken Berry and the yellow one is named Ala Gold
To me Mario RPG has always bene the key to how Toad relates to other Toads. I always assumed that group of Toads in Mario Sunshine became that Toad Brigade in the Galax Games and thus that Red One became Captian Toad. Toad always has a Blue Vest regardless of the Color of his Spots. I used to head Canon that the Koopa you play in the Mario Kart Games was Koopa The Quick from 64, but then I realized Koopa The Quick is supposed to be a Giant.
Holy moly I remember chatting with that Kinopio kun on LINE! It was pretty janky for an AI chatbot but the fact you could ask it about Nintendo games/characters specifically made it super fun.
As a big dumb nerd who loves mario to the point where I painted and modified a bunch of miniatures for a table top war game I play (Infinity) to look like mario characters, I love these videos! They're fun, informative, and give me knew ideas for painting more minis in the future. Keep up the great work!
For clarity i'll tell differences of Toad and Captain Toad. Toad is a loyal member of the princess, he is shown to help peach prepare cakes or assist in hair make-up, his relation with Kinopio-kun is a friend, with Toadette it can be anything, they did dance together in their freetime they enjoy being together. Toad is very cheerful, has a big heart(as in feeling), hard-working, and loyal(same as his friends) Captain toad is a treasure hunting adventurer, and in his game trailer a male voice described him as " he is a bit scatterbrained" and "kind of a scaredy-pants" as the person in the trailer said, or a "reluctant hero".
Keegan Michael Key said this at the game awards: "its not a hat, it's a cap. Which is another way of saying hat." So I think Nintendo told him it's still a hat
they said toad and captain toad are not the same person, but earlier you said that they said that toad and toadette are adventure pals in the captain toad series 0.o
To answer some inconsistencies, I think the Toad Brigade is its own cast & crew. Sunshine introduced them, then Galaxy expanded upon them. Pretty sure the group is called the “Toad Brigade” in both games, meaning Red Toad is a seperate character who becomes Captain Toad (which would make sense given the Miiverse post and the fact he evolves from a Toad with a distinct red vest, then red vest and a headlamp, and finally full captain attire). We know Blue Toad from the Brigade is seperate from SM3DW Blue Toad because the Brigade one wears glasses and is playable in the Switch port. The Toads in the Brigade look and act a lot younger in Sunshine so my headcannon is after that game he had his first visit to the eye doctor. I’m surprised you didn’t talk more about the Brigade as they all have a bit of personality sprinkled in. Blue is always giving hints to the player/Mario, Green was known as Banktoad in Galaxy and fittingly opens a store in the Lost Kingdom in Odyssey, Purple was the mailman then curiously got shafted from the group, and Yellow Toad has consistently been portrayed as sleepy, even in Mario Maker 2. For this reason I doubt he’s the NSMBWii/U Yellow Toad. Toad is my favorite and I still learned a few things from this video, but I think there’s a bit more lore under the hood of the Brigade! (though I’m probably just biased)
I think the Yellow and Blue toads from Mario Sunshine could be both the Toad Brigade members and the NSMB toads. I know you said that NSMB yellow toad probably isn't the Toad Brigade yellow toad because the latter is always sleepy but the sunshine toad doesn't have sleeping problems in sunshine. Maybe Yellow Toad developed sleeping problems after Sunshine and the NSMB games.
The Sunshine Toads and Toad Brigade are different characters. Captain Toads dialague in Mario Galaxy makes it extremely obvious this is the first time we've met him.
im somewhat reminded of a youtube video ive seen where the avengers were interviewing potential new recruits and after some bad guys did the classic "order a lot of pizzas that some 1 else would have to pay for" prank, the superheroes doing the interviews were so impressed with how many pizzas the pizza guy managed to deliver to them that they decided to have him join the team
The 3 pink Toads in the Super Mario universe are Toadette from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003), Toadiko from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (2005) and Trading Event Toad from Paper Mario (2001).
14:52 HOLY FUCKING SHIT ASHITA NO JOE REFERENCE!?!?!? MY GUY IS A MAN OF CULTURE!! Ashita no Joe is a fucking masterpiece of story and was so incredibly influential and revolutionary I can't even begin to describe its impact! It's a hidden gem for sure but it's a MUST WATCH!!
The way I interpreted it is that while Toads were ORIGINALLY designed without specific genders in mind, once explicitly female Toads like Toadette and the ones in the Paper Mario series started appearing, the existing Toad design became male. They have genders, it's just male and female Toad initially looked the same.
That is the actual truth "Toads are genderless!!!" Is actually a big missconception, it is on the Mario wiki rumors and Urban legends for a good reason
The way I see it, there was never a "THE Toad." They've fallen into the same hole as characters like Nurse Joy or Officer Jenny; near-identical, like-minded, interchangeable units that we have no hope of tracking between stories unless they specifically say "I'm the one from..."
So, the named main toads are Toadstool, Captain Toad, Toadette, Kinopio-Kun, Toad (from the movie), and apparently Buckenberry who is the main blue toad. The two unnamed main toads are the playable yellow one and the main red one/ones.
Didn't mention anything about Mushbert or Toad Force V Also with voice do you prefer high pitch Toad or Screech!Toad? I personally prefer Screech!Toad, but I understand some people choose to be wrong and like the other one. That Two Carton a Day smoking habit voice adds a bit to the characterisation x3
Personally I always believed that after Galaxy, Toad decided that he enjoyed being an independent explorer and Blue Toad stepped up as the princess' advisor and ally. And Yellow Toad is there too I guess, maybe he died or just got tired after the NSMB games
I feel like I should've commented on this a year ago, but having just rewatched the video I gotta say that I have now accepted the nickname of "Little Roadie" into my Head-canon.
Toad's the heir of the Toad family; full name Toad Toad. He has brothers named Red, Yellow, Blue, etc. If you really want to tell them apart, you need to use the middle names.
I think the main toad is the one from SMB2, he's commonly playable in many projects after SMB2 as the only playable toad in spin offs like Mario Kart and Mario Party, and why else would Mario dream about a random Toad unless he knew him personally. My guess on yellow and blue toad is they're friends of the Mario brothers and the princess, because both colored toads occasionally join them on adventures or trips. (NSMB, SM3DW, & LM3.) Captain Toad is just a red vest Toad when he isn't in his gear but again, is a friend.
Love your videos! When are we gonna see your review of the new Mario Movie? (And have you ever thought of redoing your review of the 1999 Sonic OVA so it won't get flagged for some trumped up copyright reason?)
I definitely would love to revisit that review at some point. No immediate plans but a great idea nonetheless. Mario Movie should be coming up shortly, still trying to figure out the best way to edit it to avoid copyrights
The Citeleview is such a lost relic that can never truly be re-lived. Even if the games that got made for have been released and patched for SNES emulators, the full experience with the narration and voice acting and such can't be experienced, since said content only existed through the satellite broadcasts. If only Nintendo knew how much people were interested in it, and then MAYBE released restored versions with the satellite content for the games on virtual console, WITHOUT a need for a live broadcast.
Toad in Japanese is kinopio and kinopio sounds like Pinocchio idk if I’m the first person to point that out but was that intentional or a coincidence if that was intentional what connection does toad have to Pinocchio Edit: so no connection miyamoto just thought the similar names were funny
I think that Toad didnt have an Identity, Red Spots, Blue Vest, everyone just called him Toad, he worked for Princess Peach, same with his twin brothers and his cousin, Blue Toads, and Yellow Toad. One day Bowser, trying to kidnap Peach, kidnapped Princess Toadette and Toad decided that him and his Brothers and Cousin should save Toadette, one Blue Toad would get knowledge of every kingdom and gave them information on where they have to go, Captain decided that the smartest and safest way to get to the Bowsers castle was to mine there, Yellow Toad and the Other Blue Toad deafeted the enimies they faced in the caves but eventualy they made it to Kameks tower they deafeted Kamek, took his wand, went to Bowsers castle, one Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad deafeted the enimies in Bowsers castle, Toad, used Kameks wand to put Bowser in some lava and save Toadette, quickly, the word spread about all the Toads heroics, but the Blue Toads and Yellow Toad told the media to thank Toad for being the real driving source in the recsue, he got the nickname Captain Toad form his heroics during the adventure. and yes, I think Toadette is the princess of the Toads, One step higher than Toadsworth in terms of Power but One step below Peach in terms of power
The five Toads in the Super Mario universe are Toad from Super Mario Bros (1985), Toadbert from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (2005), Toadette from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003), Toadiko from Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (2005) and Toadsworth from Super Mario Sunshine (2002).
Hasn't it been established that the five Toads in Super Mario Sunshine are the same Toads as the Toad Brigade in Super Mario Galaxy? Meaning that this red Toad in Sunshine is actually Captain Toad instead of THE Toad?

Toad is a main character with red spots for years. Captain Toad stars a toad with red spots. *different toad* it just don’t make sense to deliberately make things more difficult than they need to be. Same with the inconsistency with Mario & Donkey Kong/DK Jr
Or replacing Toadsworth with a random toad, despite Toadsworth being a main character(he was even in the concept art).
Making the kooplings related then unrelated to Bowser for some reason. Going out of their way to make Waluigi and Wario look similar and hang out all the time only to claim they’re not related.
Refusing to put Daisy in any games(even the ones that star Luigi) etc etc
Just weird things like that which raise more questions than answers.
Maybe she is "involved" with captain toad, and normal toad is her relative
@@magic2546I raise my eyebrows when you say Mario has little lore, but I get that delves in the question if you count spin-offs as canon or not (and just the canonicity of Mario in general), which I think spin-offs do count, as we won't have Waluigi and Toadette be more mainstream without those spin-offs to introduce them, IMO.
2:02 lol beauty impression, mate, spot on ^_^'
6:15 it was the Mama Luigi that gave you my thumbs up, excellent video my friend.
my favorite toad is the blue hint toad that is a part of captain toads brigade, hes so cute i love his little glasses :D
Like, in the Toadstool Tome, god says that females are not allowed outside the home and should just remain inside as they exist for sporing purposes only. lol
@@TheAnax oh my glob. D: but then why does toadette get to go outside? unless she doesnt actually count? ugh, im so confused
@@MegaMegajennifer Every time she leaves the house, she defies the laws of the Great Shroom, and so, she risks being stoned to death by Thwomps. lol
"Little Toadie" coming home and being like 'huh this brick looks a lot like jason' 💀💀💀
I appreciate the use of the Toad theme from Mario Strikers Charged in the intro
I love how this guy gets Mario lore right instead of making far fetched theories that Nintendo definitely weren’t thinking about when making the games or trying to put real world logic into a video game
*Cough Cough Matpat Cough Cough*
It's a shame Toadsworth, Captain Toad and Toadette were cut from the movie.
This whole "does Main Toad have red or blue spots" thing really puts into question who is assisting Peach and Daisy in Smash Ultimate...
Maybe main toad is peach’s assistant and nsmb blue toad(bucken berry) is daisy’s assistant
I'm disappointed the main Toad didn't make squeaky toy noises when he jumps in the movie.
About Toadsworth, it has been stated that... Bowser ate him; "one of these Toad/Toadette creatures need to go....hmmm I do like chewy food"
I feel _Nintendo_ wanted to create *a seperate distinct Toad Character with a set Identity* when they began making _Super Mario Sunshine_ - they introduced *Toadsworth* to have a clear *Second-in-Command to Princess Peach* _(Someone_ has to maintain the Mushroom Kingdom while the Princess is Kidnapped!), while *a Toad with a Red Vest* (likely to _identify against_ the OG Toad) acts mostly just _to carry everybody's Suitcases._
Sometime between _Sunshine_ and _Galaxy,_ this Toad has seemingly shown promise enough that Peach and Toadsworth have appointed him *Captain of the Royal Guard,* or something - thus now being named *Captain Toad!*
While not _the Original, definitive Toad,_ Captain Toad is likely *Nintendo's attempt to create a Marketable Variation of Toad* (just like _Toadette and Toadsworth)_ that wouldn't cause confusion amongst Players when stood alongside the other people of the Mushroom Kingdom.
7:31 I love when you play the Death Note musicmatch it's funny as hell 😂
i thought the toad in the red vest was named kyle. "kyle, is that my vest?"
We need *Toadsworth* In the next *Super* *Mario* *Bros* *Movie*
Toad is very cheerful, has a big heart(as in feeling), hard-working, and loyal(same as his friends)
Captain toad is a treasure hunting adventurer, and in his game trailer a male voice described him as " he is a bit scatterbrained" and "kind of a scaredy-pants" as the person in the trailer said, or a "reluctant hero".
You've been killing it with these uploads
Keegan Michael Key said this at the game awards: "its not a hat, it's a cap. Which is another way of saying hat." So I think Nintendo told him it's still a hat
they said toad and captain toad are not the same person, but earlier you said that they said that toad and toadette are adventure pals in the captain toad series 0.o
I love the way he pronounces super Mario brothers.
4:10 I was trying to forget this scene 😭 and you bring it back lmaooo and yes plz do a video on the Japan only USA version
Headcanon: the Fungus Federation is to the Mushroom Kingdom what the USA is to the UK.
That's why George Washingtoad exists in the animated series.
Your commitment to pronouncing it "Supah mario brazaz" singlehandedly made me subscribe to your channel. Well, that and your videos are entertaining.
13:12 apparently they have actual names yellow is ala gold and blue is buckleberry (idk if I got this right)
To answer some inconsistencies, I think the Toad Brigade is its own cast & crew.
The 2 chef Toads from the 2 Paper Mario games are Tayce T. from Paper Mario (2001) and Zess T. from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2004).
Fantastic research, you're doing great job with all these lore videos!
There's also a Green Toad featured in Wario's Woods. Could he potentially be related to Kinopio-kun?
That Green Toad in Wario’s Woods is the Keeby of the Mario franchise: he just exists
in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder trailer it looks like the playable Toad is yellow
the world is a cruel place
No
14:52 HOLY FUCKING SHIT ASHITA NO JOE REFERENCE!?!?!?
MY GUY IS A MAN OF CULTURE!!
Ashita no Joe is a fucking masterpiece of story and was so incredibly influential and revolutionary I can't even begin to describe its impact!
It's a hidden gem for sure but it's a MUST WATCH!!
The way I interpreted it is that while Toads were ORIGINALLY designed without specific genders in mind, once explicitly female Toads like Toadette and the ones in the Paper Mario series started appearing, the existing Toad design became male.
They have genders, it's just male and female Toad initially looked the same.
That is the actual truth
"Toads are genderless!!!" Is actually a big missconception, it is on the Mario wiki rumors and Urban legends for a good reason
The fucked up part is that now Wonder uses yellow Toad as the base one lol
The way I see it, there was never a "THE Toad." They've fallen into the same hole as characters like Nurse Joy or Officer Jenny; near-identical, like-minded, interchangeable units that we have no hope of tracking between stories unless they specifically say "I'm the one from..."
So, the named main toads are Toadstool, Captain Toad, Toadette, Kinopio-Kun, Toad (from the movie), and apparently Buckenberry who is the main blue toad. The two unnamed main toads are the playable yellow one and the main red one/ones.
15:32 Actually, in the Game Awards, Keegan-Michael Key said that Toad wears a cap.
To clarify todas are Sexless not genderless. Sex is a body thing. Gender is social thing.
My favorite Toad is Toad himself.
I love your commitment to the pronunciation. Your pettiness is showing.
The way you got me so attached to Kinopio-Kun and then revealed he was MURDERED 😢
Didn't mention anything about Mushbert or Toad Force V
Also with voice do you prefer high pitch Toad or Screech!Toad? I personally prefer Screech!Toad, but I understand some people choose to be wrong and like the other one. That Two Carton a Day smoking habit voice adds a bit to the characterisation x3
I’d go with Screech voice. It seems to be what everyone remembers most 😂
Personally I always believed that after Galaxy, Toad decided that he enjoyed being an independent explorer and Blue Toad stepped up as the princess' advisor and ally. And Yellow Toad is there too I guess, maybe he died or just got tired after the NSMB games
I feel like I should've commented on this a year ago, but having just rewatched the video I gotta say that I have now accepted the nickname of "Little Roadie" into my Head-canon.
When he says super Mario brothers, I hear super Mario Brazzers....
He says it that way on purpose, to add flair and humor.
Although not canon, I always refer to the yellow playable Toad as Alah-Gold and the blue playable Toad as Buckenberry
When Toad is introduced in the Mario movie, Captain Toad’s theme played for a bit
We need an origin oracle for the baby version of the Mario characters, those things are confusing as hell
Not really
Paper Mario Fans: Still Have Nightmares Of That Name of that little human with mushroom cap
THE Toad, to me, is Captain Toad, he's the only one consistently seen with Toadette
Youre gonna do the Zelda lore? If you can get me to fully understand it despite me never having played a Zelda game, that will be incredible
I’ll try my best 😂 Probably why I’m stalling with these last few Mario characters
I like that captain toae d has become a mythical, larger than life character in origami king.
Every and all toads are my favorite toad!
Justice for Toadworth! He’s worth it!
Toad in Japanese is kinopio and kinopio sounds like Pinocchio idk if I’m the first person to point that out but was that intentional or a coincidence if that was intentional what connection does toad have to Pinocchio
Edit: so no connection miyamoto just thought the similar names were funny
I think that Toad didnt have an Identity, Red Spots, Blue Vest, everyone just called him Toad, he worked for Princess Peach, same with his twin brothers and his cousin, Blue Toads, and Yellow Toad. One day Bowser, trying to kidnap Peach, kidnapped Princess Toadette and Toad decided that him and his Brothers and Cousin should save Toadette, one Blue Toad would get knowledge of every kingdom and gave them information on where they have to go, Captain decided that the smartest and safest way to get to the Bowsers castle was to mine there, Yellow Toad and the Other Blue Toad deafeted the enimies they faced in the caves but eventualy they made it to Kameks tower they deafeted Kamek, took his wand, went to Bowsers castle, one Blue Toad, and Yellow Toad deafeted the enimies in Bowsers castle, Toad, used Kameks wand to put Bowser in some lava and save Toadette, quickly, the word spread about all the Toads heroics, but the Blue Toads and Yellow Toad told the media to thank Toad for being the real driving source in the recsue, he got the nickname Captain Toad form his heroics during the adventure. and yes, I think Toadette is the princess of the Toads, One step higher than Toadsworth in terms of Power but One step below Peach in terms of power
what if the og toad just dyed his cap and changed his outfit
Shout out to that toad who's wife left him.
I've always assumed that 3D world Blue Toad and NSMB Blue Toad were the same character. Are they confirmed to be different characters?
Hasn't it been established that the five Toads in Super Mario Sunshine are the same Toads as the Toad Brigade in Super Mario Galaxy? Meaning that this red Toad in Sunshine is actually Captain Toad instead of THE Toad?
I’ve been playing through treasure tracker with my gf and it’s a great game! A bit easy to just get through the levels but very fun and creative with Some absolutely gorgeous levels. Also the challenge times are actually challenging some of them you have to hold perfect lines and know how to find little time saves.
