though i am vegetarian and dont agree with killing or eating animals, i have SO MUCH respect for Temple! she, like myself, grew up around animals and loves them very much, and it looks like her life's work is to make sure that people in the meat industry are educated and in turn, no animals have to suffer. she is amazing! i wish she lived in nashville i would totally be her friend :) keep up the good work Temple, we love ya! ~ Beth, Lily & Chase

Ross Rosen There's no such thing as humane killing. I've spoken to several slaughtermen, both friends and relatives, who confirm this. Industry won't even consent to CCTV monitoring of killing floors, despite shocking video footage repeatedly surfacing over the years. Grandin is a rodeo apologist, yet the best animal welfare science to date shows that rodeo animals do suffer. I've seen some shocking footage of that, too. Far too much. Grandin as a lot of explaining to do IMO.

@@mattw3340 I agree she is the best that out there, that is visible to the public anyway. Her approach seems to go beyond scientific. We live in a world that eats animals as the norm, barbaric it may be now until we can find a genuine alternative to satisfy meat eaters appetites, but until then I'm glad there are people like this lady who seem to care for the animals and make things less stressful until their lives are taken for food.

Ma'am, you are a godsend to your industry. My biggest complaint about the commercial slaughter of animals is the amount of abuse, fear, and distress the animals are subjected to before and during their deaths.
Everything you're saying makes me nod and smile in agreement because THIS is how animal slaughter needs to be. What you do is SO important, Mrs. Grandin. Because you remind people that these are LIVING things capable of experiencing fear and pain that are giving THEIR lives to feed us.

I recently read a book called The Dog by the cradle, the serpent beneath. Through that book I was introduced to your methods. You are an absolute hero and inspiration to me. I am a vegetarian but if I was guaranteed that all livestock died through your humane process, I would start eating meat again. You are my hero, thank you so much for the amazing work you have done and continue to do. I hope others can be enlightened and stop the cruel process of factory farming.

Here is a woman who has dedicated her life to animal welfare, and has found many ways treat animals humanely in both their daily living and in slaughter. With most certainty the great debate on the taking of life for food will go on for ever and the best that can be offered is compassion in the production of meat.
I have to take my hat of to you Temple, what you have achieved with such simple and long over looked methods with animal behaviour is remarkable and to see these animals going through a system and having no awareness of their fate or suffering in this industry is a credit to you. Your research is well done.

More places are adopting Temple's advice and taking greater care in handling the animals. If they'd just SLOW down a little, they'd avoid a lot of the sloppy and inhumane treatment.
These animals give us everything, they give us their lives. It is only right that we treat them with kindness and respect until they are dead. It doesn't take a lot of effort.

I've been a vegetarian for 13 years and I understand your sentiments, but as long as the demand for meat perdures (and it will continue with or without Dr. Grandin), mitigation of suffering rather than complete elimination of the institution is the only realistic goal, and Dr. Grandin has effected this to some degree. Abuse is still regnant, but before Dr. Grandin not even a whit of the mitigation thereof existed. Owing to my realistic expectations of the world, I cannot condemn her efforts.

There's nothing pretty about Slaughter and meat plants, but we are going to eat meat as long as civilization continues, I think she made so many improvements to the way animals are treated and there's nothing cruel if anything she's doing it out of compassion for the animals. Like she says she's doing it Behavioral not by force and they look like they're pretty relaxed and calm going through the slaughterhouse, it's too bad that we consume meat but it's part of life it's natural just like in the wild when predatory animals carnivores hunt and eat meat the only difference here is we are sourcing out our hunting for us, I still don't like a lot of the way animals are treated and handle but she did a pretty good job so far out changing the way meat plants kill livestock, she never said she had all the answers and before she was even around we were always eating meat so how is this her fault? And how is she evil? One person says what's the answer 2 pigs being brought to the slaughterhouse, why is that her fault that pigs being brought to the slaughterhouse are being hurt? I don't like it I don't have the answers but we as people should be thanking her 4 at least making a difference to the quality out of the way they're being handled because before her these animals were being tortured terrorized panicking and there was nothing Humane about it, one lady alone made this much of a difference and I'm sure before her time is up she will continue to see that the quality of the way they're handle and treat it will will be improved and more humane as possible. We have to eat to survive it's the way it always was since the starting of mankind.

Cheryl Miller what I said is what I believe and I think it's very true, I think it's amazing how she understands their behavior. I would have never thought about this until I seen her movie, she came along way and did a lot, and if anything she took the cruelty out of meat packing plants and made a big influence in the meat industry on all species . And then I seen all these videos on numerous meat packing plants where a cow is left out bloated in the yard and you could see the stress and all the cattle , another particular video a guy was given the boot to a turkey and his defense saying it was going to die anyways, I don't know how anybody could think that way leave the bird there in pain traumatize because we are going to consume it, pretty cruel. It's a part of life we are going to eat and it's not going to stop but the cruelty and torture is so unnecessary, I think her for what she did and her beliefs.

I totally agree here.I can not see the point in leaving an animal in agony with its throat cut open to bleed to death.Although that is still the case after stunning with a bolt or electroleathalers, exsanguination is still the cause of death, the difference is that the damage to the animals brain after stunning causes insensitivity to pain. The kicking after the stun is mearly a reaction to the lack of oxygen in the animals blood and lack of activity in the brain, muscular twitching.

It's the first I've heard of "Eternal Treblinka". My point, if I have one, is that I was not debating the morality of killing animals. We are also not debating the scale of the killing which is what people find so horrifying in both the case of killing animals for meat and in the case of genocide (Godwins law in action). So my answer to the question would still be yes, in any circumstance where killing is taking place trying to make sure it's done humanely is a good thing, in relative terms. You?

I live in Maine and me and my mom refuse to buy any hamburger meat from the store. We get it locally from a butcher shop that gets everything local and guarantees good pasture meat. We would buy it at our farmers market, including our steak, but it costs way too much for a low income family. We do get it from the store under high recommendations. The thing is with vegetarians is that you need SOME meat to live. No protein makes you weak and lowers immune systems to certain diseases. Fish works.

I know I already sent these questions to your autism website, but I wasn't sure how long it'd take for you to find and answer them there. I'm really sorry to nag you about it, but getting the answers to these questions would really give me some piece of mind.

I grew up in Russia and currently live in the US. Where are you from / live? I dont really know what the rest of the world looks like but I m really open to listen . I understand that in some parts of the world eating animals may be the only way to survive and I cant judge it . But in many other parts of the world there are options. Tell me what you meant and how the rest of the world is different.

Mackenzie Lee - Temple Grandin in world famous for her work to reduce animal suffering during this process. Animal slaughtering is necessary and if you have to do it, a system that reduces fear, stress on the animals we eat is important.

@411314 ...which will occur incidentally at a certain percentage of the time, which is significant, but also depends on many variables, such as the particular worker overseeing any given operation of the slaughter, the company itself and how much management cares, the kinds of underpaid of labor that go in to these places, usually immigrant workers who themselves are in a hard way... you basically create a mixing pot of a lot of factors for cruelty incidence to be rather common

The stupidity of your argument is refreshing. Was the murderer going to cook the victims body to feed his children so that they wont have to starve to death? I think not!
Do not compare killing animals to killing humans.

I'm a stunner.. 2000 per day. I hate having no head restraint it means some will always need to be reshot and it's illegal to make a mistake when a mistake is garrantied to happen sometimes without a head restraint.
